Their last overtime or shootout win was Nov. 28 vs. Carolina in a shootout. SERIES NOTES * Washington leads, 36-21-5-5, entering the 68th meeting (14-13-2-4 on the road)* This is the sixth and final meeting this season; the home team won the first four before Atlanta beat Washington, 3-1, on Dec. 4 inD.C.* Washington had won the season series each of the last three years but the best it can do is tie this season* The Capitals had won nine straight at Verizon Center before the last meeting* Washington won all six meetings last season and had an eight-game winning streak snapped by the Thrashers in the season opener MORE CAPITALS NOTES Heating up –Alex Ovechkin’s hat trick Saturday night –the 10th of his career and first this season –marked his third straight game witha point (4g-2a) and second consecutive multiple-point game (3g-2a). It was the first time since Nov. 24-26 that Ovechkin has postedtwo or more points in consecutive games. He was held off the scoresheet Monday but had a team-high six shots on goal and wasnamed the game’s third star. Winning’s the thing –Alex Ovechkin has scored six game-winning goals, tied for the league lead, and has assisted on five more. Hehas points in 24 of the Capitals’ 27 victories this season. 800 level –Defenseman Scott Hannan –who is +5 in his last 16 outings with only one minus game –is slated to play in his 800th careergame tonight. Hannanhad an assist Monday night, his first point as a member of the Capitals. Gold In Goal –Washington is the first team in NHL history with four or more wins from three different goaltenders aged 22 or younger.  20 vision? –Alex Ovechkin’s hat trick Saturday gave him the team lead in goals and put him one goal shy of his sixth consecutive 20-goal season. Only three Capitals –Peter Bondra (13), Mike Gartner (10) and Mike Ridley (7) –have had more than six straight 20-goalseasons. 20 vision, part 2? –Mike Knuble, who had three goals entering December, is now more than halfway to his eighth consecutive 20-goalseason. He has five tallies in his last 11 games and has a little less than half a season to reach 20 again. Only nine players have scored20 goals in each of the last seven seasons.  Spirit of 74 –Defenseman John Carlson third among NHL rookies (and leads the Caps) at +13 and leads all rookies in blocked shots. All five of his goals and 15 of his 21 points have come at Verizon Center.  Spare a dime –Nicklas Backstrom has at least an assist in 10 of the last 14 games (1g-11a)and reached the 300-career-pointmilestone in his 293rd game, the seventh fastest active player and third fastest Capital all-time to reach 300 points. Stingy –The Capitals have allowed just 34 goals in their past 18 games, with the team’s three goaltenders combining for a 1.76 goals-against average and a .941 save percentage in that time. The team ranks seventh in the league in goals against (2.48); Washingtonhasn’t been in the top 12 in the league in goals against since finishing fourth in 1999-00.

That’s two more shutouts than the teamendured in the past two seasons combined and matches the most times the Capitals have been shut out in a season since 1998-99(11).  A star –Semyon Varlamov has allowed just 14 goals in the last eight games combined and been one of the three stars in five of them(4-2-2 record, 1.81 GAA, .944 save percentage). He has been one of the three stars in nine of the 18 games he has played this year, more than any of his teammates (several of whom have played 46 games). Entering Tuesday’s games Varlamov ranks fifth in the NHLin goals-against average and in save percentage. Finish strong –Washington has outscored opponents 33-18 after the first intermission of the last 17 games and 107-82 after the firstintermission for the season. Face it –Washington has won at least 50% of its faceoffs in 30 of the last 37 games and ranks third in the league at 52.6% on theseason. David Steckel leads NHL centers with a 64.2% success rate on faceoffs. Good omens –Washington is 17-2-3 when it scores a power-play goal (10-0-1 when it scores one but does not allow one) …it is 19-0-2when leading after two periods and 5-0-3 when tied …it is 25-0-3 when it scores at least three goals …it is 13-3-5 when being outshotby its opponent. ONE-TIMERS * Capitals prospects won gold (Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitri Orlov), silver (Cody Eakin) and bronze (Patrick Wey) at the World JuniorChampionship. Kuznetsov and Orlov were named to the all-tournament team while Eakin was named Canada’s best player in the gold-medal game* Prior to Saturday night the previous five Capitals hat tricks had all been scored by players other than Alex Ovechkin (four forAlexander Semin, one for Brooks Laich)* December (5-6-3) was Washington’s first sub-.500 month since November 2008* Brooks Laich (4) and Alex Ovechkin (2) have combined for 6 of the Caps’ 11 power-play goals on the road, but have none at home* Bruce Boudreau’s .678 career winning percentage is the best of any coach in NHL history with at least 250 games of experience UPCOMING CAREER MILESTONES Nicklas Backstrom –4 games shy of 300Matt Bradley –2 games shy of 600Eric Fehr –10 points shy of 100Scott Hannan –1 game shy of 800Brooks Laich –7 goals shy of 100Alex Ovechkin –8 assists shy of 300
