ATLANTIC CITY/BRIGANTINE COMMUNITY RELIABILITY PROJECT

Atlantic City Electric is committed to providing our customers and communities with safer and more reliable energy service. Given the growing threats from extreme weather and powerful storms, we are making strategic upgrades to modernize our energy infrastructure across South Jersey.

As part of this effort, we are planning the Atlantic City/ Brigantine Community Reliability Project to replace an existing substation in Brigantine and rebuild two critical transmission lines between Atlantic City and Brigantine. We conducted a comprehensive review of potential options and identified these upgrades as the most cost-effective and least impactful option to enhance service for our customers.

Why It’s Important

Improves reliability for customers by reducing the frequency and duration of outages.

Strengthens local energy infrastructure against more extreme weather, like major storms and hurricanes.

Modernizes critical infrastructure in Atlantic City and Brigantine, increasing its resiliency and longevity.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

n Safety for our customers, communities and employees is our top priority.

n Work includes replacing an existing substation in Brigantine and rebuilding transmission lines in Atlantic City and Brigantine.

n Project construction is expected to begin Fall 2020 and be completed by May 2022.

n To minimize impacts to the community, transmission line construction will only occur during the “off-season.”

n We will work closely with you to incorporate your feedback and minimize any impact to the community.

n We have a dedicated project phone number 609-625-8888 and email address [email protected] to ensure we can respond quickly to your questions.

Project map

Substation Details We will replace the existing substation on Bayshore Ave. in Brigantine with a new, larger substation built on our expanded 1.5-acre property at the same location. The new, state-of-the-art facility, which helps deliver energy to customers in the area, will be equipped to handle more extreme weather and have a higher capacity to support the community’s continued growth. To help screen the substation from the public, the facility will be surrounded by a perimeter fence and much of the equipment will be enclosed within a new building. The substation will meet the highest established standards for critical infrastructure protection and safety.

Transmission Line Details To strengthen the substation’s connection to the regional energy grid, 3.4 miles of transmission line will be rebuilt with more modern equipment. This will include replacing wood poles, which are more vulnerable to storm damage, with stronger steel poles along parts of Rt. 30 and Rt. 187, and along Brigantine Blvd., from the Brigantine Bridge to 38th St.

Committed to Working With You We are committed to working closely with our customers and communities to address questions and minimize potential impacts throughout the project. We value your input and will work with you to incorporate your feedback and address your concerns, wherever possible, and will continue to keep you informed throughout the entire project.

REDUCING THE IMPACTS OF STORMS AND HURRICANES

n Stronger Poles: Installing new poles that can withstand hurricane-force winds of 120 mph.

n Elevated Substation: Raising the facility several feet above flood zone to prevent power outages.

n Remote Operation Capabilities: Adding modern substation controls that can be remotely operated if island is cut off from the mainland during a storm.

n Greater System Redundancy: Creating additional redundancy to improve reliability for customers.

Enhancing Reliability Across South Jersey The Atlantic City/Brigantine Community Reliability Project is part of our broader strategic effort to strengthen and modernize the energy grid serving South Jersey. This effort includes dozens of targeted projects in communities across South Jersey to harden our critical energy infrastructure and build a more resilient grid to prevent those outages that can be prevented.
