GEC 2007: Sabine Minninger, atmosfair - atmosfair: Setting standards for voluntary carbon offset
Citation preview
atmosfair:
setting standards for
voluntary carbon offset
Sabine Minninger, atmosfair
Content
I Air traffic and climate change
II Carbon offsetting with atmosfair
III atmosfair‘s projects
IV Opinion of customers
Warum ist Fliegen so klimaschädlich?
• Long distances > much fuel consumed
Frankfurt – Los Angeles - Frankfurt:
~750l kerosene/passenger
• High impact of GHG in travel height
Burning 1l kerosene in height of 10km
is like burning 3l on the ground
Why does air travel
damage climate so much?
• Mobility of Germans: Air traffic equals impact of all car driving
• Contribution of air traffic to global warming: 4 - 9%
BUT: 90% of the world‘s population hardly ever flies
80% of all flights are for tourism
• Since 1970: Air traffic increased 500%, keeps growing
>> Tourism is a mayor problem
However, political measures hardly exist
atmosfair
• Born from NGO Germanwatch and eco-travel
association „forum anders reisen“
• since May 2005: non profit company
• patron: Klaus Töpfer, former executive director
of UNEP
• Idea: Flight emissions (impact on climate) are
reduced elsewhere by offset projects
atmosfair: clients and official partners

• independent
• differentiated
• transparent & documented
•approved by German Federal Environment Agency
 Accurate
Emissions calculator
Cost
• inside EU: 10-20 EUR
• overseas: 40 – 150 EUR
Online-Booking via travel agents
• At least 80% of funds into projects
• Message: „If I fly, I do it atmosfair.“
• Promotion of flight avoidance (Video conferences, „Holidays in touch with the earth“…)
• Only CDM Gold Standard projects: Resulting CERs areretired from the market on atmosfair‘s account at theofficial German registry
Many providers of „carbon neutrality“ do marketing ratherthan climate protection
atmosfair standards
atmosfair: award winning
more to come soon ...
1. Official Kyoto process leads to Certified Emission Reductions (CERs)
2. Independent and liable, UN-accredited revisors
3. Only renewable energy and energy efficiency projects
4. Additionality strictly assessed (Projects are NOT bussines as usual)
5. Contribution to local wellfare and sustainable development (jobs for
locales, local environment, capacity building…)
CDM Gold Standard:
Project India: Solar cooking
Partners:
Gadhia Solar (Indian Solar-Company, GTZ)
Beneficiaries:
18 kitchens of hospitals, schools and religous centers
Technology:
Solar steam cooking devices with steam storage
CO2-Reduction:
500 tCO2/a by avoiding diesel
Local benefits:
Improved air quality, lower dependence from diesel
Since August 2006 officially registered at UNFCCC
Partners:
GTZ, Chumporn Palm Oil Industry (CPI)
Beneficiaries:
Palm oil factory and nearby farmers
Technology:
Biogas from sewage water, avoidance of methane and replacement of fossil fuels
CO2-Reduktion:
20.000t CO2/a
Local benefits:
Clean water, reduction of bad smell. NO rain forest put at risk!
Current state:
Project is running, but formal approval of Thai government still missing (political crisis)
Project Thailand: Biogas from sewage water
Partner:
BORDA (Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association)
Beneficiaries:
Peasants in about 100 chinese villages
Technology:
Hydraulic rams replace diesel pumps
Local benefits:
Improved yields, lower dependence from diesel

about 2000tCO2/a
In preparation:
Irrigation in rural China
Partner:
Mongolian NGO, DED
Beneficiaries:
Inhabitants of 3000 small houses in Ulaanbataar
Technology:
Insulation with simple, locally available materials
Local benefits:
Better living conditions, coal saving
CO2-Reduction:
