Most Influential Paper Idea

•This was proposed by John Valasek• Find the most influential paper from past years

• Make a special presentation to the author at a future conference

•There seemed to be a lot of interest at the start

•No one has stepped up to lead the effort

•Should we pursue it or drop it?

Page 12: Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Technical Committee AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference Honolulu, HI 17 August 2008 The Worlds Forum for Aerospace

April 10, 2023 Atmospheric Flight Mechanics TC 12

Request from Applied Aerodynamics TC

• Applied Aerodynamics (APA) TC has interests closely related to ours

• APA has met with AFM/GNC in the summer every fourth year

• They have voted to stop meeting with us

• Jim Keenan, APA TC Chair, contacted me to invite us to

• Meet with APA every fourth year

• Co-locate with Fluids, Thermophysics, etc., not with GNC (and now MST)

• Meet in June instead of August those years

• We voted “NO” (by email) early this year

New Business

• How Do We Make the AFM TC Thrive?

• We’re at a Comfortable Membership Level (34)

• We’re Due to Lose Half our Members in 2009

• Supposed to be a 3-year (maximum) commitment

• Several members with less than 3 years have not been renewed

• We Need to Replace Subcommittee Chairs Tonight and in January

• There are a Couple of Options for this TC

Page 15: Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Technical Committee AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference Honolulu, HI 17 August 2008 The Worlds Forum for Aerospace

April 10, 2023 Atmospheric Flight Mechanics TC 15

New BusinessTC Member Emeritus

• This is an idea that is being pursued by other TCs

• Not an official position recognized within AIAA

• Establish active outgoing members as “Emeritus” members

• Invited to attend TC meetings

• No voting rights or positions as subcommittee chairs

• Encouraged to help with regular subcommittee tasks

• What do you think?

Page 16: Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Technical Committee AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference Honolulu, HI 17 August 2008 The Worlds Forum for Aerospace

April 10, 2023 Atmospheric Flight Mechanics TC 16

New BusinessA Four-Year Commitment?

• Commitment to the TC is for three years

• Actually, it’s for one year

• There are up to two years’ options based on participation

• We hold two meetings a year, some TCs hold three

• We could extend commitment to four years

• This would not be an official AIAA stance!

• We would notify applicants when they are accepted

• They would not be required to remain for the fourth year

Page 17: Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Technical Committee AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference Honolulu, HI 17 August 2008 The Worlds Forum for Aerospace

April 10, 2023 Atmospheric Flight Mechanics TC 17

New BusinessTechnical Session Co-Chair Options

• Currently, we designate two co-chairs for all technical sessions

• Provides back-up

• May provide a reason for a non-TC member to attend a conference

• Is this working?

• Should we make an effort to go outside the TC for co-chairs?

Page 18: Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Technical Committee AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference Honolulu, HI 17 August 2008 The Worlds Forum for Aerospace

April 10, 2023 Atmospheric Flight Mechanics TC 18

New BusinessIdeas for Invited and Special Sessions

•Not really new business…

•There were lots of good ideas back in January

•PLEASE provide your ideas to the Chairs of the Technical Subcommittees by tonight

•Subcommittee Chairs, PLEASE forward those ideas to Ag, Bandu, or Atilla

• Invited and special sessions are always a big hit

And the Winner Is … Ping Lu

• Citation: For contributions in advanced guidance algorithms for entry and

ascent flight.

• Specifically, Prof. Lu is an internationally recognized leading researcher in

advanced entry guidance for reusable launch vehicles and spacecraft and

ascent guidance of launch vehicles. An on-board trajectory planning and

guidance algorithm devised by Prof. Lu was selected by NASA Marshall as

the winner of a Reusable Launch Vehicle Guidance and Control competition.

It had performance that far exceeded that of the Shuttle guidance algorithm,

and handled a much larger number of severely off-nominal test scenarios.

Prof. Lu's work on advanced entry guidance and ascent guidance, published

mostly in AIAA journals and conferences, is among the most commonly cited

references of recent years in these fields.
