ATO over ETCS
Background
ETCS provides safety & worldwide interoperability BUT major challenges for Main Line Operators are:
to improve the performance and capacity of lines
to reduce operating cost
Automatic Train Operation (ATO) is proven in Urban application
There is a great variety of train and infrastructure fitment
Main Line application is more complex
An interoperable ATO over ETCS has only recently been requested (MoU 37b).

What is ATO over ETCS?
Automatic driving of the train to meet the timetable in the
most energy efficient way.
ATO is an add-on which complements ETCS
There is no safety in ATO (Protection is done by ETCS)
ATO is only available in ETCS Full Supervision mode

ATO Impact on ETCS Specs
Additional messages required for the track/train (ETCS as
postman)
ATO traction cut-off when ETCS is not in FS
Additional icons and text indications on the DMI
Suppression of warning indication when ATO is engaged
This will require a compatible update to ERTMS Baseline 3
(M_Version 2.y)
Non fitted ATO trains can ignore ATO messages
