Element

• Pure Substances that Can not be broken down by physical or chemical means

• Composed of only 1 type of atom• Found on the periodic table• Has a symbol with one capital letter (If more

than 1 letter second letter is lower case)• Example: Gold --Au, Carbon --C

Page 3: Atom—All matter is made of atoms. Smallest part of matter (NOT LIVING)

Compounds

• Matter that is composed of 2 or more elements CHEMICALLY COMBINED

• Have a formula that has 2 or more capital letters

• PURE SUBSTANCE—All the molecules are alike in a compound

• Elements are have a specific ratio in compounds• Example: Calcium Chloride CaCl, Water H2O

Page 4: Atom—All matter is made of atoms. Smallest part of matter (NOT LIVING)

Mixture

• Not pure substance• Matter put together with physical changes• Easily separated• No set ratio• 2 types of mixtures

Page 5: Atom—All matter is made of atoms. Smallest part of matter (NOT LIVING)

2 types of mixtures

• Homogeneous mixture—looks the same throughout (salt water)

• Heterogenous mixture—you can see the different parts of the mixture

• (fruit loops)
