LUNCH & LAUGHTER Wednesday, March 7 at 12:30 pm following Noon worship

Yes, it is Lent. But this is also the month we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and all things Irish & Irish-American. What are your St. Patrick’s Day traditions? Drowning the shamrock? Wearing green? Pinching? Learn more about these traditions and more as we gather for our potluck lunch. Bring a dish to pass…maybe an Irish-inspired main, side/salad or dessert…and join us for a time of friendship and good conversation. We’ll provide beverages, hot and cold. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex, but if you forget to sign up, come anyway. There is always room for YOU at our table.

Set-up or clean-up help is always appreciated. If you need transportation, call the office at 442-1018 and we will help secure you a ride.

REFUGEE WELCOME FELLOWSHIP DINNER The concept is simple: Welcome refugee families new to Rochester and get to know each other. Share food and fellowship. Welcome the neighbor. Isn’t that what Jesus calls us to do? On January 28 we co-hosted an intergenerational pot luck supper for around 130 people…an evening of food, fellowship and music with refugee families. Held in the 12 Corners Presbyterian Church fellowship hall, it is a collaborative welcoming ministry of Atonement, 12 Corners and South Presbyterian Churches, along with Catholic Family Center, the agency responsible for settling refugees in our community. Our guests from Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria and Burma/Myanmar, along with members from all of the participating congregations, streamed in with an amazing selection of dishes to share, including traditional foods from lands far away. Many arrived wearing colorful traditional clothing and the room was filled with the sounds of many languages and lots of laughter. Children enjoyed an arts and crafts time and later sang and danced to fun songs like the Hokey Pokey and Heads Shoulders Knees & Toes, energetically led by Josh & Elizabeth Dollhopf-Brown. Feedback has been extraordinary and everyone wants to make these gatherings an ongoing outreach ministry. So mark your calendars for Sunday, April 29 at 4:00 pm for our next International Fellowship Potluck Dinner. (New name!) Reservations are requested and space is limited for each congregation. Volunteers are needed! Watch for details in Tidings, the Sunday bulletin, and the narthex bulletin board. Come and sit at our table, share a meal, be a welcoming and healing presence for people who have suffered and given up so much….come and love our new neighbors.

For more information, contact Avis Hooper, Pastor Gail, or Margy Peet.

EASTER FLOWERS

Stronger Than Death

Gonna lay down my sword and shield, down by the riverside…

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives…

Goodness is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death….

They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks…neither shall they learn war anymore…

It happened two weeks ago and I am still heartsick. More school shooting deaths…more children gunned down…more lives torn apart and now, so is our country. Less guns? More guns? No guns?

Morally, ethically and theologically speaking, we should not be killing anyone. Let me say that again: we should not be killing anyone. And it is this current generation of young people who have drawn a line in the sand and said; “Enough. We aren’t going to stand for being shot at any longer.” Young people who can command a stage and taken the lead. Students who have become the drivers of their own story with raw honesty and emotion. An unbelievably powerful movement has begun, laser focused on changing our culture and demanding an end to gun violence. Enough.

Please note, there is a spiritual component here that must not be overlooked. Lutherans have an “arms wide open” approach to the world. We engage the world and embrace it on behalf of Christ. So that as we listen and act in response to the cries of “Enough” - we are compelled to show God’s love even more to others. Are you ready?

Join me in support of students, parents and all who look with hope towards the end of gun violence, as we gather at a Candlelight Vigil here at Atonement. We will come together to stand for change and to pray for peace in our schools, in our homes and in our communities, believing that light is always stronger than darkness; love is always stronger than death.

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

This year Good Friday Service on March 30 at 7:00 will employ a devotional service crafted by theologian, hymnist and writer Susan Palo Cherwien. The 9 part Way of the Cross service features reading, prayers and hymns focused on Jesus’ final hours on earth. David Cherwien, Cantor at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis MN, director of the National Lutheran Choir and Palo Cherwien’s husband has written brief organ improvisations reflecting on each of the service’s stations. Together they have created a musically and devotionally rich Way of the Cross service for the remembrance of Christ’s darkest hours.

Dear Atonement Family, What a powerful and wonderful demonstration of your love! Thank you for keeping me daily company on some of the darkest, coldest winter days. From Advent through Epiphany, I waited with anticipation for your daily notes and verses, and none of them disappointed. I will treasure my advent “Calendar” for years to come. Than you for all of the time and thoughtfulness you gave to make it happen. Thanks to each and everyone of you for sending me the light of the Christ Child.

Wishing you all a continued, blessed new year, and hoping our paths cross soon. Love, Barb Macholz Grimaldi and Family
