    Atopic Disease

(Memo) by Elisabeth Rieping, last update 2008/05/04

progesterone and disease Atopic disease prefers females especially during times of high progesterone (Jensen-Jarolim E 2008).

The cytokine milieu of atopic dermatitis, as compared to that of psoriasis, seems to prevent induction ofinnate immune response genes to microbial infection. The expressionof innate immune response genes,

human beta defensin-2, IL-8,and inducible NO synthetase was found to be decreased in skin of atopic

disease patients, as compared with those of persons with psoriasis. Because HBD-2, IL-8, and iNOS are

known to be inhibited by Th2 cytokines, the effects of IL-4 and IL-13 on HBD-3 expressionin

    keratinocyte culture was examined.

IL-13 and IL-4 were found to inhibit TNF-alpha- and IFN-gamma-induced HBD-3 production. Thesestudiesindicate that decreased expression of a constellation of antimicrobialgenes occurs as the result of

    local up-regulation of Th2 cytokines

and the lack of elevated amounts of TNF-alpha and IFN-gammaunder inflammatoryconditions in AD skin. These observations could explain theincreased susceptibility

of AD skin to microorganisms, and suggesta new fundamental rule that may explain the mechanism for

    frequentinfection in other Th2 cytokine-mediated diseases (Nomura I 2003).

One important disease of atopic persons ist asthma. The influence of progesterone on artificial asthma ofrats has been evaluated . In rats allergized by ovalbumin the cytokine levels could become changed by

progesterone and estrogen (de Oliveira AP 2007).
