    City Boards and Commissions (210) 619-1030The City Council appoints citizens to a wide range of advisory commissions and boards. To learn more, contact the City Secretarys office or visit schertz.com. All commission agendas are posted 72 hours before each regular meeting, and all meet-ings are open to the public.     Library Advisory BoardThe Library Advisory Board provides advice to the City Council for continued development and improvement of the Schertz Public Library.

    Parks and Recreation Advisory BoardThe Parks and Recreation Advisory Board provides guidance and advice to the city regarding parks and open spaces.

    Planning and Zoning CommissionThe Planning and Zoning Commission reviews and considers master plans and makes recommendations to City Council on comprehensive plan amendments, Unified Development Code amendments, specific use permits and zoning requests.

    Board of AdjustmentThe Board of Adjustment hears appeals and variances from the zoning regulations and construction violations.

    Economic Development CorporationThe Economic Development Board promotes the city to attract business and industry, bring jobs to our community and expand the citys tax base.

    Historical Preservation CommitteeThe Historical Preservation Com-mittee is a group of volunteers com-mitted to promoting tourism and preserving the historic remnants of our citys rich past.

    Transportation Safety Advisory Commission (TSAC)TSAC investigates safety issues and makes recom-mendations with respect to City roadways, walks, paths and other matters related to transportation safety.

    Boats, Motor Homes and Trailer Storage

    Boats, motor homes and trailers are allowed in front of homes only long enough to load and unload. Viola-tions are enforced by the Schertz Police Department.

    (210) 566-5454 Schertz residents have the opportunity to help keep Schertz clean. Annual clean-ups are scheduled in the spring and fall: generally in April and October. During the two-week clean up, Bexar Waste will pick up household waste not covered under their normal collection service, such as lumber and general trash as well as major appliances and furniture for a fee. (Prices start at $25 per load and are determined by Bexar Waste.)

    Trail Rider Lunch in Schertz(210) 945-7400Be on the lookout in early February as local residents and community leaders turn the Pickrell Park pavilion in Schertz into a makeshift chuck wagon for the hungry and weary trail riders as they pass through town on their way to the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Schertz Bank and Trust employees and volun-teers prepare plenty of stew to feed dozens of hungry mem-bers of the trail riders.

    Doggie DashThe Homes for Pets Wilen-chik Memorial Doggie Dash at Schertz is held each year in Pickrell Park.     Steve Simonson Community Service Award(210) 566-9000Organized each year by the Schertz Chamber of Commerce, the Steve Simonson Community Service Award is presented an-nually to the Schertz citizen who during the eligibility year exhib-ited selfless commitment to his or her community via volunteer efforts that made a difference in others lives.

    Hal Baldwin Scholarship and Golf Tournament(210) 619-1600The Hal Baldwin Scholarship and Golf Tournament is an annual event that raises funds for scholar-ships encouraging high school seniors (public, private or home-schooled) who are residents of Schertz to consider public service as a career path. The scholarship winners are announced in late May. Individual players, teams, volunteers and sponsors are wel-come. Donations accepted.

    Police Memorial Day(210) 619-1200Each May, Schertz-area law enforcement personnel observe Police Memorial Day as part of Police Memorial Week. The noon ceremony at the Schertz Police Department is open to the public.

    Sweetheart Coronation(210) 619-1600The name Sweetheart has become recognizable over the past 20 years not only within Schertz but in dozens of surrounding communities. Members of the Sweetheart Court serve as ambassadors at local community events and of course at parades and festivals. They also participate in various community service projects in and around the Schertz area. Applicants, volunteers and sponsors are welcome. Contact the Schertz Event Coordinator to request an appearance or for informa-tion. Donations accepted.

    Jubilee(210) 619-1600While most folks waited to cel-ebrate the 200th Anniversary of American Independence in Schertz, we love our freedom so much we started the party a year early. In 1975, a handful of volunteers organized the first Jubilee. Now, nearly 40 years later, Schertz Jubi-lee celebration has become one of South Texas largest tributes to freedom and the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces. Complete with music, entertainment, food and fun, this Schertz celebration of-fers something for the whole family. Vendors, volunteers, entertainers and sponsors are needed. Donations accepted.

    ArtzWhen Money Magazine twice named Schertz one of the top places to live in Texas and the United States, the financial magazine said quality of life was an important factor. As one of Americas best small towns, Schertz is always looking to im-prove that quality, and one way is cultivation of the arts, especially local talent.     Schertz Fest(210) 619-1600What would a birthday be without a party? Join the City of Schertz at Schertz Fest each September in Pickrell Park. Enjoy a weekend soaking up live entertainment while sampling all kinds of festival food from the many food vendors that will be on hand for the occasion. Chil-dren will be more than happy to join in on the fun and games at the carnival. Included in the annual event is the BBQ cook-off sanctioned by the Texas Gulf Coast BBQ Cookers Association. For those wishing to compete, stay tuned to visitschertz.com. Vendors, volunteers, entertainers and sponsors are needed. Dona-tions accepted.

    OCTOBER

    National Night Out(210) 619-1253Organized each year by the Schertz Police Department, the National Night Out is an anti-crime, get-to-know-your-neigh-bor event. For more information, contact the Special Projects Officer. Donations accepted.

    Fire Prevention Week(210) 619-1300October brings fall colors, cool-ing temperatures, ghosts and goblins, but it also brings us a message of prevention as we recognize Fire Prevention Week across the nation. The Schertz Firefighters will be visiting schools in the service area and bringing instructional materi-als, toys and reminders of how to avoid fires in the home and to stay safe if a fire does occur. Donations accepted.

    Trunk or Treat(210) 619-1300The Annual Emergency Services Schertz Trunk or Treat celebra-tion returns Halloween night at the large pavilion in Pickrell Park. Organized every year by the Schertz Fire Department, more than 900 local children converge on the park for family-friendly fun. Local law enforce-ment, fire and EMS personnel as well as civic organizations and businesses are welcome to par-ticipate. The program provides a safe, enjoyable environment for children as an alternative to tra-

    ditional trick-or-treating. Mark your calendars to join us for a ghoulishly good time. Donations accepted.

    NOVEMBER

    Holiday Lock-up(210) 619-1253Join the Schertz Police Depart-ment at the annual Holiday Lock-Up benefiting Blue Santa, which helps local area families by purchasing gifts for Christmas. Have a fellow co-worker, boss, friend, etc., locked up because of a warrant issued by Santa. Once a person is arrested, they will be taken to the jail until they are bailed out. Donations accepted.

    DECEMBER

    Festival of Angels(210) 619-1600There is no place better to come home to for the holidays than Schertz! Join the City of Schertz for South Texas official holiday kick-off celebration when Santas Sweetheart Court flips the switch, lights the tree and wishes for a white Christmas. Held the first weekend in December, the Festival of Angels features a lighted night parade, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, tasty treats and wonderful music from local schools and choirs. Join us as we Ski Schertz and ring in the holidays. The fun lasts from the tree-lighting ceremony until the last bit of snow melts in the park. Its great family fun, and there is something for everyone. Dona-tions accepted.

    a licensed fire equipment company; fees will apply. These companies are listed in the phone book under Fire Equipment.

    Fireworks Fireworks are prohibited in Schertz. Novelty items such as snappers, party poppers and toy caps are permitted. These items may be sold at novelty stores but not usu-ally at fireworks providers. In general, if you buy the product from a fireworks stand, it is not allowed to be possessed or used within the city limits of Schertz.

A Bexar Waste crew will normally deliver a new recycling bin within one to two weeks, but in some cases, it could be longer. Additional bins may be purchased by call-ing Bexar Waste. Newspapers, including slick, glossy inserts, can be recycled if they are not wet or discolored by the sun. Newspaper put out for curbside recycling pick-up should be protected from the weather. Corrugated board and box board are recyclable materials. Glass containers with no lids should be rinsed before being put out for curbside recycling pick-up. Plastic containers with no lids should be rinsed be-fore being put out for pick-up. Aluminum, tin and bi-metal cans, such as beverage or juice cans, will be picked up for recycling.

    in Northcliffe. Pool admission is $1.50. Children under 2 years of age get in free. Season passes also are available. Children 12 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older.

    ing is prohibited between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Hand-held watering devises or drip-irrigation systems may be used at any time.Here are some water conservation tips: Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle,

    regardless of how many dishes are loaded. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food

    coloring in the tank. Watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from an invisible toilet leak. Fix it, and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year.

    Use your water meter to detect hidden leaks. Simply turn off all taps and water-using appliances, and then check the meter after 15 minutes. If it moved, you have a leak.
