Labour warns of fake social media accounts

BONUS – RUSTENBURG – The Department of Labour has warned members of the public about faked social media accounts opened fraudulently using the Labour Minister’s name.

The accounts are on Facebook, LinkedIn and on Twitter.

One of these accounts, LinkedIn, has asked people to make donations to an International Funding organization.

“The Minister wishes to categorically indicate that this is nothing more than a

scam,” the department said in a statement. “The Minister does not subscribe to any

social media platform currently. All South Africans should desist from interacting with these social media pages as they will be conned to pop out money for all the wrong reasons.”

Hotel robbery leads to arrestsBONUS – RUSTENBURG – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Phokeng managed to arrest suspects at around 13:50 on Tuesday, 8 July, at a local hotel on the R565 to Sun City. The arrest was made in conjunction with the Technical Response Team and the Royal Bafokeng Security.

According to Captain Paul Ramaloko, spokesman for the North West SAPS, police reacted swiftly, intercepting seven suspects who were in the process of robbing two Bangladeshi nationals residing in the chalets of the hotel.

Four of the suspects managed to flee the scene. “Victims report that the men held them at gun point, demanded cash and the keys to

their VW Polo,” Capt Ramaloko explained. The three remaining suspects were arrested

and appeared in the Bafokeng Magistrate Court in Thlabane on Friday, 10 July 2015.

A search for their accomplices is under way. The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Jacob Tsumane applauded the two security forces for joining hands with the police to apprehend the suspects.

Still no clarity around tariffsBONUS – RUSTENBURG – Following the publication of a reader’s shock at the prepaid electricity station in last week’s issue of the Rustenburg Herald (10 July), the Rustenburg Herald continues to receive enquiries from readers who have witnessed the same inconsistency regarding electricity tariffs.

One reader writes of spending R500 on 22 June and receiving 343.3 units but receiving only 179.8 units of power for the same amount on 6 July. Another reader received a mere 376.5 units for R1 000 spent on 2 July direct from the Rustenburg Local Municipality.

“There must be a snake in the grass,” one reader told the Rustenburg Herald.

Upon enquiring from the municipal workers as to why the amounts are so different, readers are allegedly just told that tariffs have risen and “that is that”. For more see this week’s issue of the Rustenburg Herald.

Fuel cell technology to save platinum sector?BONUS – RUSTENBURG – If reports in the national media are to be believed, the platinum sector will need to increase its concentration on fuel cell technology if it hopes to increase demand for the metal.

In the past year since 14 July 2014 the price of platinum has dropped from $USD 1 494 per ounce to $USD 1 023 per ounce (as at 09:15 on Monday, 13 July). The sharp drop has led in the plunge of share prices on all the platinum producers with Impala Platinum reaching an 11-year low in June.

Fuel cell technology involves the use of platinum catalysts to convert hydrogen

to water, creating both electricity and hot water. The form of power supply is favourable as conventional methods have proved more unreliable.

Analysts believe that as demand for platinum used in diesel-powered cars is dropping due to increased use of fuel-saving and electric technology, the production of fuel cells using platinum could give the sector a much-needed turnaround.

What’s “cooking” at your fireplace? As most of you will probably know, our cooking team is now in the final week

Prevent the petrol station

bluesBONUS - RUSTENBURG - The sharp petrol price rise will make it more difficult for South African households trying to make ends meet.

On 1 July, the petrol price rose by as much as 44 cents a litre. Motorists refuelling with 93-octane will pay the full 44 cents. The increase for those using 95-octane or unleaded is 41 cents a litre. This is on top of the 47 cent increase for all grades of petrol in June.

The price at the pump for filling a 50-litre tank with 93 octane is now R676, R45.50 higher than two months ago. A motorist filling up four times a month will now pay up to R2704.

On its own, just over R45 per tank may not sound like a lot, but bear in mind that this is the second significant increase in two months and a rising petrol price tends to have a knock-on effect across the economy.

Higher transport prices mean goods and services cost more, adding inflationary pressure.

This will worry the Reserve Bank, leaving it with little option but to raise interest rates.

“Faced with the reality of higher petrol prices, rising electricity costs, the possibility of further price increases for both and an uptick in interest rates, saving some money on petrol suddenly starts sounding like a sensible idea,” says Gavin Moir, head of marketing at Direct Axis.

Some immediate things that motorists can do to save costs include:

Car pool: If you are using your car to commute, see if you can offer lifts to two or three colleagues and share the costs. Better still if they own cars and you can take turns to drive, you’ll also save on maintenance.

Drive sensibly: Harsh acceleration and braking will not only add to the wear and tear on your car, but also wastes fuel. Accelerate gently and change up smoothly through the gears. Don’t be tempted to change up too soon, though, as a labouring engine also wastes fuel. In areas where the traffic lights are properly synchronised, you should find that you’ll be rewarded with green lights for

sticking to the speed limit.

Don’t be lazy: The convenience of cars mean that many of us jump in and start up even if we’re only going a short distance. If you’re just popping to the nearby shops to pick up something you’ve forgotten think about walking or taking a bicycle.

It’ll save you fuel and make you healthier.
