W hen preparing for Windows 2000 Server installation, it is important that you conduct a study of your requirements to find out the best method of installation. This exam will test your knowledge of installation requirements and your ability to decide on an

installation method for a given scenario. You must have a solid background of installation prerequisitesand different installation procedures.

Some of the important aspects of installation are: knowing the minimum hardwarerequirements needed; checking the server hardware against the Hardware CompatibilityList (HCL); disk partitioning; choosing a file system for installation; and decidingwhether or not to join a domain during installation. Deciding on which file system touse depends on whether the system is a single-boot or multi-boot system runningWindows 9x or Windows NT. When installing the Windows 2000 Server using aCD-ROM or over the network, you must have every piece of information available to answer the setup queries.

TEST YOURSELF OBJECTIVE 1.01

Preparing for InstallationThe first thing you need for the successful installation of Windows 2000 Server is thehardware requirements and a study of the given scenario. The minimum hardwarerequirements are a Pentium 166MHz or higher processor with up to a maximum offour processors per server, a minimum of 128MB of RAM that can be up to 4GB, and 1GB of free hard disk space (2GB recommended). More hard drive space isrequired if the installation is to be done from a shared network. You must also have akeyboard, mouse, and VGA monitor attached to the system.

Before starting Windows 2000 Server installation, you must check theminimum hardware requirements.

You should check your existing hardware against the Hardware CompatibilityList. The HCL is provided by Microsoft for all hardware supported byWindows 2000.

The hard disk can be partitioned before, during, or after installation, but it isrecommended that you prepare one partition before installation.

Windows 2000 can be installed on a FAT, FAT32, or NTFS partition. Forsingle-boot configurations, NTFS is recommended. For dual-booting withWindows 95/98, you may choose the FAT or FAT32 file system.

NTFS provides enhancements over FAT and FAT32, such as file-level security, encryption, compression, disk quotas, and installation of Active Directory.

When preparing for Windows 2000 Server installation, it is recommended thatyou keep in mind the minimum hardware requirements, supported upgradepaths, partitions, compressed drives, and file system needed to meet the givenrequirements. You are expected to know the features of the FAT, FAT32, andNTFS file systems, advantages and disadvantages of each, and how to decidewhich file system to use. Be careful: the Microsoft recommendation is alwaysthe best answer when more than one answer seems to be correct.

TEST YOURSELF OBJECTIVE 1.02

Four-Step Process from CD-ROMOnce the initial preparations for Windows 2000 Server installation are complete, you can start the installation either from a bootable CD-ROM drive or from thenetwork. You must be careful that all third-party device drivers are readily availableduring the installation, specifically the SCSI controller drivers. If you do not have SCSIcontroller drivers, the setup will not recognize the hard drives and the installation willfail. Installation using the CD-ROM method can be used for a clean install or for anupgrade install.

You can perform an attended installation of Windows 2000 Server from aCD-ROM or across the network.

You can upgrade existing Windows operating systems to Windows 2000, orinstall it separately for single- or multi-boot configurations.

Microsoft recommends a single-boot configuration for Windows 2000 Server.

There are many command-line switches available to customize the setupprogram.

To create the setup floppy disks, you must use the Makeboot.exe program.

The Windows 2000 setup can be done using the CD-ROM process if yourcomputer supports booting from a CD-ROM. Otherwise, you may have to use four setup disks that can be prepared using the Makeboot.exe (16-bit) orMakebt32.exe (32-bit) programs. You may have more than one operatingsystem on a computer making it a dual-boot or multi-boot system, but it isrecommended that, in the case of servers, the system have only a singleoperating system to ensure stability and reliability. In case you need to dual-boot between Windows 98 and Windows 2000 and need to access theWindows 2000 partitions when running Windows 98, you must choose theFAT32 file system.

TEST YOURSELF OBJECTIVE 1.03

Installing Over the NetworkThe installation of Windows 2000 Server on a large number of computers is usuallyaccomplished by setting up a distribution server that is easily accessible on the network. The new computers connect to the distribution server by using the network clientsoftware, while others that are already running an operating system can connect to thenetwork share to start the installation process. Building more than one distribution serverensures that the installation load is distributed across the network and simultaneous

installations can be carried out on many computers. Up to eight locations of source filescan be specified with the /s switch of the Winnt.exe or Winnt32.exe Setup command.

When a large number of installations are required, you may choose to installWindows 2000 over the network.

There are two licensing modes: Per Seat and Per Server. Per Seat mode requiresthe client to have a license. Per Server mode holds the licenses, but there is amaximum number of simultaneous connections allowed to the server.

A Windows 2000 server must join either a workgroup or a domain if it is notbeing installed as a standalone server. This requires you to have administrativeprivileges in the domain.

You must have a 25-digit valid product key in order to install Windows 2000Server.

During setup, you must provide a unique name for the computer. Thecomputer account can be created prior to or during the installation.

To install Windows 2000 Server over the network, you need to set up adistribution server. To set up a distribution server, copy the /i386 folder fromthe CD-ROM to the shared folder on the distribution server for Intel-basedinstallations.

In Windows 2000, you can perform a network installation to a client with aFAT or NTFS partition.

The client you are installing to across the network must have network clientsoftware that allows it to connect to the distribution server. If using thenetwork client software on new computers, you must ensure that device driversare loaded high and the Smartdrv.exe file is running.

You can customize the network installation process by using the command-lineswitches for Winnt.exe and Winnt32.exe.

Windows 2000 Server installations over the network require you to set up adistribution server and copy the contents of the \i386 folder to a shared folderon this server. The network clients that do not have any operating system canaccess this server using the Microsoft Network Client software and connect to thedistribution server for starting the installation process. Usually, the Winnt.exeSetup command with appropriate switches is used to initiate installation.

AIN-DEPTH ANSWERS

1.01: Preparing for Installation1. B. Upgrade the previous operating system without formatting the

hard drive. In order to retain the data on the hard drive, it must not beformatted under any circumstances. This option also enables you to keep the Windows 2000 Server as the only operating system.

A is incorrect because it suggests formatting the hard drive, which woulddestroy the existing data on the system. C is inappropriate because a dual-bootsystem is not desired. D is incorrect because repartitioning the hard drive willalso cause loss of existing data.

2. A. Leave the disk mirroring unchanged. If the disk mirroring is done usingthe Windows NT Disk Administrator, or if it is hardware-based mirroring, youdo not need to break the mirror to successfully upgrade Windows NT 4.0 toWindows 2000. Breaking the mirror is only necessary if you want to perform aclean install.

B is incorrect because there is no need to break the mirror set when you wantto upgrade an existing Windows NT operating system. C is inappropriate, as youdo not need to break the mirror or reformat the hard drives. Reformatting thehard drives will cause loss of data. D is incorrect because you cannot break themirror set during installation.

3. B. The proposed solution produces the required result and one of theoptional results. The proposed solution produces a clean installation of theWindows 2000 Server on a separate partition that will make the system dual-boot between the Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Servers. The first desiredresult is not produced because you will not be able to access drive D whenrunning Windows 98, which has been converted to NTFS. The second desiredresult is produced as the sensitive data gets secured using the Windows 2000file encryption.

B is incorrect because if you choose to install a Windows 2000 server on the existing Winnt folder on drive C, the previous operating system will be overwritten. C is incorrectbecause selecting the upgrade option when starting installation will not enableyou to make a dual-boot system.

5. C. You will not be able to join the computer to the domain duringinstallation. During the installation of a Windows 2000 server as a memberserver, the domain controller and the DNS server must be online and accessibleon the network. If this is not ensured, the new server will not be able to join thedomain as a member server. The server will be installed as a standalone server. You can join the domain later using the Network Identification tab in SystemProperties.

A is incorrect, as there will not be any problem starting the Windows 2000Server installation. B is incorrect because the Windows 2000 installation willnot fail. D is incorrect because you can join the computer to the domain at alater time, when the domain controller and the DNS server are available on thenetwork.

1.02: Four-Step Process from CD-ROM6. C. e:\Bootdisk\Makebt32.exe. The Makebt32.exe is a 32-bit program in

the \Bootdisk folder of the Windows 2000 setup CD-ROM that is used tocreate four setup boot disks. This command is used on Windows 2000 andWindows NT computers.

A is incorrect because the Makeboot.exe is a 16-bit program used to createWindows 2000 setup boot disks from computers running Windows for

Workgroups 3.11 and Windows 9x. B is incorrect because the Makeboot.exe isnot located in the \i386 folder and is not used to create setup boot disks from32-bit operating systems such as Windows NT and Windows 2000. D is anincorrect choice because the Winnt32 /ox command is used in Windows NTfor creating setup boot disks and is not a valid command for Windows 2000.

7. B. The proposed solution produces the required result and only one of the optional results. You will be able to upgrade the current Windows NT3.51 operating system to Windows 2000. The first of the optional results isproduced because the setup will automatically place the temporary installationfiles on drive C. The second and third optional results are not produced, because the Setup Wizard will neither allow you to specify the additional folderto install during the setup, nor will you be able to remove the CD-ROM afterthe file copy phase. In order to achieve these two results, you must use theWinnt32.exe Setup command with additional switches. The optional switch/copydir:SpecialDocs with Winnt32.exe command allows you to install theadditional folder. The /makelocalsource switch will allow you to copy the setupfiles to the hard drive so that you can remove the CD-ROM drive after the filecopy phase. You need not specify the temporary folder location with theWinnt32.exe command, as it will automatically be created in the C drive.

A is incorrect because the proposed solution produces the required result butdoes not produce all of the optional results. C is incorrect because the proposedsolution does not produce two optional results. D is also inappropriate becausethe proposed solution does produce the required result.

8. B. Use the /cmdcons option with the Winnt32.exe Setup command. TheRecovery console is installed during Windows 2000 setup using the /cmdconsoptional switch with the Winnt32.exe command. When you use the Winnt32.exeSetup command from the Windows NT 4.0 operating system, you can upgradethe server to Windows 2000. Once installed, the Recovery console can bestarted from the initial boot Options menu when the computer starts up.

A is incorrect because the given solution does not allow you to install theRecovery console during the operating system installation. The given commandhowever, is correct. C is incorrect because the /cmd: command switch is usedto run an additional command before the final phase of setup, and cannot beused to install the Recovery console. D is incorrect because the Recoveryconsole is not installed by default.

9. B. \Winnt\Winnt32.log. The /debug option records the debug informationin the log file that is named Winnt32.log by default. This file is located in the\Systemroot folder, which is \Winnt. Hence, the debug log file is \Winnt\Winnt32.log.

A is incorrect because the default name of the debug log file is notWinnt.log. C is incorrect because the name of the Systemroot folder isincorrectly given as Windows. D is also an invalid choice because it gives thename of the debug log file as Win2000.log, which is incorrect. If no name isspecified for the debug log file, the name defaults to Winnt32.log.

10. B. The /Checkupgradeonly switch with the Winnt32.exe Setup commandruns a compatibility check on the existing hardware and all installed applicationson a running server. This command generates a log file named Winnt32.log(located in the installation folder) that explains the compatibility details.

A is incorrect because the Winnt.exe command cannot be run on a serverrunning Windows NT 4.0. Moreover, there is no such switch as /Checkupgrade.C is incorrect because the given switch /Checkupgrade is incorrect. It should be/Checkupgradeonly. D is an inappropriate answer because running a completesetup on one of the servers is a risky process, as the server will be upgraded toWindows 2000. Even if the upgrade is fully successful on this server, it is notdefinite that the upgrade process on all servers will be successful, because eachserver does not have a identical set of installed applications.

1.03: Installing Over the Network11. C. E:\i386\winnt.exe. This is the correct syntax for starting the

Windows 2000 Server setup from a network share on a new server that does not contain any operating system. We have to use the Winnt.exe program because the network client software emulates the 16-bit MS-DOSoperating system.

A is incorrect because the Setup.exe command is not used to start theWindows 2000 setup. This file is called by the Autorun.bat program. Moreover, this file is not located in the \i386 folder. B is incorrect because the Winnt32.execommand is used from a running 32-bit operating system to start the installation.D is also incorrect because the Autorun.bat file is not located in the i/386

folder. This file is automatically started when the Windows 2000 Server setupCD-ROM is inserted in a running 32-bit operating system such as Windows 98and Windows NT.

12. A. Select the Per Server mode. When you are not sure about the licensingmode, you should select the Per Server mode. This enables you to change thelicensing mode to Per Seat mode at a later time.

B is incorrect as there is no Per Client licensing mode. The only twooptions are Per Server and Per Seat. C is incorrect because the Per Seat mode is not a better option when you are not sure about the correct licensing mode. This option does not allow you to change to Per Server mode at a later time. D is an invalid choice because you cannot skip the Licensing question duringsetup. If you do, the setup program will terminate.

13. B. Run Smartdrv.exe before running Winnt.exe. When you run theWindows 2000 Server setup over the network, you must ensure that at least500KB of conventional memory is free. If this is not ensured, the setup takesnearly 8 to10 hours, or sometimes longer, to complete. To overcome thisproblem, run the Smartdrv.exe command. You may also want to run LoadHighWinnt.exe and Emm386.exe to ensure that all device drivers are loaded high.

A is incorrect because the /Makelocalsource will not make any difference if the Smartdrv.exe is not running before you start the setup. C is incorrectbecause increasing the RAM to 512MB will not resolve the problem, as thepre-copy and text-mode portions of the setup run in MS-DOS mode. D isincorrect because it is not possible to increase the conventional memory of acomputer. You can only increase the expanded memory (RAM).

14. B. Internet Authentication Service. The Internet Authentication Service isa part of the Windows 2000 Server networking component that enables remoteusers to dial in to the Remote Access Server on the network.

A is incorrect because Terminal Services are not required for the desiredpurpose. C is incorrect because you do not need to install another DHCPserver when one is already active on the network. D is incorrect because theRemote Installation Services is meant for deployment of the Windows 2000Professional operating system on clients, and is not meant for Remote Access.

15. B. All servers that do not have software mirroring. You must first break themirror sets in all the existing servers that have Windows NT 4.0 mirroringenabled. An upgrade install is not possible when software mirroring is enabled. The mirror can be reestablished after the setup is complete. This is not required, however, when you are performing a clean install.

A is incorrect because not all, but most, of the servers do not havemirroring enabled and can be upgraded to a Windows 2000 operating systemwithout disturbing the existing disk configurations. C is incorrect because theservers that have hardware RAID5 can be upgraded to Windows 2000 withoutdisturbing the disk configuration. D is incorrect because many of the existingservers can be upgraded to Windows 2000.

16. A. Configure RAID5 and partition the hard disk before setup, and runsetup from the network share simultaneously. This option is the best answer for running attended Windows 2000 Server installations simultaneously on all new servers. The hardware RAID5 must be configured and all partitionscreated before running the setup. Running setup from the network shareensures that the installations are carried out simultaneously.

B is not the best choice because you do not have 20 copies of theWindows 2000 Server CD-ROM. C is incorrect because it is not possible topartition the hard disk during installation when RAID5 is hardware-based. D isincorrect for two reasons: First, the installations cannot be run simultaneouslyfrom a single copy of the setup CD-ROM, and second, a hard disk cannot bepartitioned during setup in the case of hardware-based RAID5.

17. C. All Windows NT 4.0 servers that are running Enterprise Edition. The Windows NT 4.0 servers with Enterprise Edition cannot be upgraded tothe Windows 2000 Server operating system. The only upgrade path for these isto the Windows 2000 Advance Server. All other servers with either Windows NT4.0 OS or Windows NT 3.51 can be upgraded to Windows 2000.

A is incorrect because the servers without CD-ROM drives can use thenetwork share for the upgrade installations. B is incorrect because Service Pack5 for the Windows NT 4.0 server is not a constraint in upgrading these serversto Windows 2000. D is an inappropriate choice because most of the servers canbe upgraded to the Windows 2000 Server operating system.

ALAB ANSWER

Objectives 1.01–1.03The suggested steps look good but there are many steps either missing or incorrect. Some of the steps are unnecessary and can be avoided. Let us have a look at all ofthem:

1. The first missing step is that before you start the actual installation, you mustrun the Winnt32.exe /Checkupgradeonly command on the server that hasapplications running to ensure that there are no compatibility issues. Installationshould only be carried out if all the applications are compatible.

2. The statement indicates that some users have active connections to the server. These users must be asked to disconnect from the server before starting theinstallation, or they might loose unsaved data.

3. Once the above two items are taken care of, you may start the installationdirectly from the Setup Wizard that appears when the Windows 2000 AdvancedServer CD-ROM is inserted. You do not need to cancel this wizard and browsethe CD-ROM contents to find out the setup file. The given steps also suggestthat you run the Winnt.exe file, which is incorrect. Even when you decide torun the setup manually, you should run the Winnt32.exe file.

4. Next, you leave the Administrator Password blank. This is an unwise step since the server is hosting confidential data. It is also suggested that you giveaccess to users for testing the application when the installation is over. Leavinga blank Administrator Password is the most insecure method of providingaccess. The Administrator Password must not be left blank in any case.
