From the Deputy Principal
Happy Monday!
A huge thank you to all our families that participated in last week’s fabulous book
week parade! It was so much fun. I hope you enjoy the photos over the page!
At Fernvale State School we use a problem solving strategy called the ‘High 5’ to
help develop our independence in
solving our social issues. The
strategy can be used in the
classroom or the playground or at
home with brothers and sisters.
We practice the strategy and the
words to use at school and in the
playground with role plays,
modelling and coaching however
you may also like to practice this
strategy at home.
Ignore
Pretend you didn't hear it
Take deep breaths
Do not make eye contact.
Count to five in your head
Think positive self-esteem statements.
Practice - Use role play to show what ignore - looks like, feels like and sounds like.
Friendly Talk
Use a calm voice.
Redirect to the game, a positive activity/behaviour
Maintain eye contact.
Use confident body language.
Use "I" statements – I feel . . . . when you . . . . . because….
Walk Away
Do not look back. Walk confidently, do not run.
Look confident - stand tall, head up high.
Do not make eye contact.
Walk away to a busy area or towards a staff member.
Firm Talk
Use an assertive, loud voice.
Re-state your “I” statement. e.g. I said I feel . . . . when you . . . . . because….
Tell them to stop.
Look confident - stand tall, head up high.
Walk away to a busy area or to a staff member.
Report
Walk away and tell a staff member.
Bystanders also need to support and report.
Report, report, report until somebody listens.
Reporting is helping/getting yourself out of trouble.
Dobbing is trying to get someone in trouble.

‘Find your Treasure’ Book Week 2018
Other School Matters
MAD P-3 This fortnight in MAD, the Preps to year 3 students are discussing ‘Being a Good Friend’. We have to think about what qualities make someone a good friend. Good friends are fun to be with, they listen, co-operate and help, they are honest and can be trusted, and they join in and play safely. You can help your child to be a good friend, by also being a good friend to them.
Student Absences Please inform the school office of any absences and reason or call the Student
Absence Line, see details below.
Telephone Numbers Student Absences: 5427 1360
The student absence line is available if you wish to leave a message that your child will be
away. Please include reason why and what class your child is in without waiting for your
call to be answered which may be more convenient to you.
Calendar Art Fundraising Event
Your child’s beautiful artwork can be made into a calendar, diary or greeting cards.
They make wonderful gifts for family and friends and are perfect for posting
overseas.
Your child will complete their artwork at school in class and you can view it before
you order. You may order as many items as you wish from the same piece of
artwork.
Simply fill in the order form and return it and the payment to the office by
Wednesday 19th September. (Cheques payable to Fernvale State School)
Parents/Carers are requested to advise Fernvale State School if your child’s Asthma diagnosis is current. If your child’s Asthma diagnosis is current, please provide the school with an updated Asthma Action Plan if they require assistance to administer their medication and/or if their emergency response is complex. It is important Asthma Action Plans are updated annually. Requirements for students at risk of asthma If your child has asthma and requires assistance to administer their medication, it is important for you to provide the school with your child’s emergency medication and their Asthma Action Plan, completed by your doctor. An Asthma Action Plan provides specific instructions for the school to administer your child’s medication. We recognise that some students are capable of managing their asthma without adult assistance. If you are confident that your child can confidently, competently and safely self-administer their asthma medication, let the school administration know. The school will record your decision and will not require your child’s Asthma Action Plan. Please note that if your child requires assistance in an asthma emergency, staff will provide Asthma First Aid. Thank you for assisting Fernvale State School in supporting your child’s health needs.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
If your child requires staff to administer medication to your child at school, please contact the school office in the first instance to discuss your child’s requirements. Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:
has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist)
is in its original container
has an attached pharmacy label
The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter. Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct supervision for the course of the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is having adverse effects and requires immediate medical attention. The student’s prescribing health practitioner also has the knowledge of the child’s medical history to determine the appropriate OTC medication to administer and is therefore able to determine dosage and provide advice regarding potential side effects or interactions with other medications. For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation has been received. A letter from a parent to administer medication will not suffice if medical authorisation cannot be
confirmed. Please be advised that until medical authorisation can be confirmed, if you wish your child to
receive medication during school hours, you will have to attend the school to take the responsibility for its
administration.
School staff are bound by these regulations and we hope that all parents will acknowledge and cooperate
with these rules.
