About UsAt Safespaces we supply custom-made safe rooms and sleep areas for use at home, in schools, and for respite care or holidays. Typically we supply products for people with special, sometimes very complex needs including autism, epilepsy and challenging behaviours.

We work closely with parents, carers, occupational therapists and other health professionals, as well as architects and design engineers to develop our products to ensure they are right for the person using them. Our dedicated team will support you through every stage of the process, from initial enquiry to supply, installation and aftercare of your equipment.

The chart opposite provides a traffic light guide to Uses and Features of our products in their standard form. The amber selections mean that the product may be suitable depending on the nature of the person using it, and/or product customisation, such as sizes and use of accessories.

Product ColoursWe recommend calming light blue walls with a contrasting colour for floor and detailing – usually Dark Blue, Purple or Green. Our customers have told us that light blue walls have the most calming effect but we can supply our products in Green, Pink, Lilac, Grey and Sand or other colours on request.

“Sarah absolutely loves it and wants to go straight in it when she gets home from school. She plays in it with her able bodied sibling and this has provided them with a forum in which they can safely play together, which is otherwise very difficult. In addition she is now happy to go to bed, it has regulated her sleeping patterns and on those nights when sleep doesn’t happen for her we can rest assured that she can come to no harm. “

Sarah Trevitt, North Somerset

“Our little lady can’t and doesn’t say much and you don’t often get a reaction from her, but the Safespace got a huge clear ‘Oooh wow!’ when you delivered it. She loves it. She likes her own space sometimes, and now she can retreat to her new room and play safely. She’s sleeping better through the night too and we all (her 3 siblings too) feel more relaxed. It puts our minds at rest knowing she is safe and happy when she wakes in the night, and when she’s trying to bang her head in frustration she can’t hurt herself. So a big thank you from us all. It really is a genius idea and a solution to many safety problems.”

a versatile, durable and soft, sleep and recreation space for anyone who may be unsafe in an ordinary room

“Connor has settled in his Safespace quite quickly and seems to really enjoy his own space. For the first time in 10 years he has slept soundly all night long for 4 nights in a row this week. The Safespace is worth every single penny and thank you so much for making our lives so much better.”

Kate, Tracey and Connor Hitchings, Andover

Who it’s forThe Safespace is designed for those with autism, epilepsy, challenging behaviour and profound multiple learning difficulties, including those with full mobility. It provides an extremely robust space that can be kicked, punched and head-butted. It can withstand the roughest treatment by both children and adults. It provides a space in which someone can sleep, move, roll or play freely, reducing the risk of injury by eliminating hard surfaces.

Visit www.safespaces.co.uk/safespaces-films to see films of Safespaces being used in the home and in schools.

UsesA safe bedroom, playroom or chill-out spaceA Safespace can make a huge difference when a person has safety issues, poor sleep patterns or behavioural difficulties. It can provide a safe play space, sleeping space or a calm area. Families often report a big improvement in the life and well-being of the user and a positive impact on the whole family.

SleepA Safespace creates a low stimulation environment which can help with settling at bedtime and improve sleep patterns. It can also provide a safer environment for those who continue to wake at night.

Sensory roomWith the option of a white wall and lighting effects, such as our fibre optics kit or special effects projector (see Accessories), the Safespace makes an ideal sensory room.

Independence & privacyA separate space to be on your own, to express feelings, especially when upset or agitated, can often be denied to those who need high levels of supervision. A Safespace provides a safe private space, particularly important during the teenage years. This personal space can support the development of behaviour self-management.

Family lifeHaving a member of the family with challenging behaviour can be difficult for everyone. Siblings, as well as carers, may have their sleep disturbed or be at risk of injury. The Safespace can enable a family to have a more balanced everyday life. It has been described by parents as bringing ‘peace of mind’ into the family home.

Free 3D design service available to see what a Safespace would look like in your home.

“For the second time since the Safespace was installed Daniel is now in the process of having his medication reduced. This medication has previously kept our son on the island where the only other alternative for him was a mainland placement at huge emotional and financial cost. We would not have thought this reduction possible without the Safespace.”

John, Shona, Mark and Daniel, Isle of Lewis, Scotland

FeaturesEach Safespace is custom-made, with a door and window, aligned with the door and window of your own room. This allows for the continued use of curtains, light fittings, radiators and electric sockets, television, music and sensory equipment. This helps to create a light, airy, comfortable space, which is much more attractive and versatile than conventional room padding.

Room sizes need to be at least 50cms (20”) wider than the Safespace to allow the walls to flex out safely.

OptionsRoll up wall – this can be added if access is required through the Safespace to reach fitted wardrobes.

Viewing panels – these can be added to enable the person using the Safespace to watch television or enjoy sensory equipment situated outside the Safespace. These can vary in size as appropriate. If a very low stimulation environment is required, we would not recommend the addition of viewing panels.

Projection screen - an internal white wall can be included in the design of the Safespace. This can be used as a projection screen. (see Accessories on Page 18)

in schoolsSafespaces have proved invaluable in special and mainstream schools all over the country. They provide a calm, low stimulation environment much needed in busy classrooms. Safespaces can help where there is a demand on space and a wide range in the needs of students. See the Film on our website of a Safespace being used in a School in Burnley. www.safespaces.co.uk/safespaces-films

Uses‘Chill out’ spaceA Safespace provides a low stimulation area for pupils to calm down, or have quiet time in a hectic classroom. Pupils can use the Safespace as a means of managing their own behaviour, by requesting time in it when they recognise their stress levels are rising. This can dramatically reduce the incidence of crisis situations.

Crisis managementWhen a crisis situation occurs, the Safespace can reduce the extent and frequency of physical intervention, and reduce the risk of injury to all. It can mean that relationships with staff members are less likely to be damaged by more restrictive practices.

In a classroom, a Safespace can facilitate a rapid response to incidents, and can remove the chaos and disruption involved in evacuating the classroom. Many schools are offering parents the option to include the use of a Safespace in their child’s Individual Behaviour Support Plan.

“We are a large open-plan mainstream school. Our Safespace is used for both a chill out area for sensory breaks with lights and toys and as a calming down area. It is primarily used for one individual with severe autism. It is detailed in the behaviour protocol as the most suitable place for the child to go when they are getting physical and needing a safe soft area to calm down. It has helped to keep both the child and staff safe. The child understands that it is their place to work out frustration. This also ensures that the other youngsters are not disturbed while working in class. It has been a real asset to our school.”

Duncan Mackay, Head of Craighill Primary School, Inverness

Safespaces have been working with the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) and offer an Advisory Policy, a model Individual Behaviour Support Plan and a brief training presentation on the use of Safespaces within best practice guidelines. Please contact us for more information.

Therapy and sensory spaceSafespaces are used as one to one therapy spaces and as safe areas in which to enjoy sensory equipment. Time in a Sensory Safespace can be offered as part of a reward system. The netting roof, viewing panels and optional white wall allow for the use of projectors and sensory lighting. We can provide sensory lighting, soft play shapes and furniture, in order to create a beautiful and safe, sensory environment.

VersatilityA Safespace can be dismantled and moved to where it is most needed, for example, when a pupil or class moves to a new classroom. This is a key reason why many schools have chosen a Safespace instead of room padding. Training in installation is available upon request.

PracticalityA Safespace can be installed with minimal disruption to the classroom. It avoids the need for structural building work and so, reduces costs.

A Safespace can be made to measure to fit a small classroom, or placed in the corner of a larger classroom or hall.

Most schools choose a 200cm x 200cm (79” x 79”) Safespace in the classroom as they find this adequate for their needs, however, a Safespace can be made up to 300cm x 300cm (118” x 118”) if required. Window blinds can be supplied to provide privacy or to create a low stimulation environment.

We can provide a design and quote based on some basic information about your classroom. A quote request form is available to download from our website.

Safespaces Films

“We use the Safespaces for a number of purposes, it very much depends on the needs of the children. Some children have used them for child initiated time out which helps them to regulate their own behaviours, some for a sensory experience with resources added to meet needs, some as a calming space which can offer a private space if upset/cooling down and some as a space to undertake one to one work.

The Safespaces have been extremely helpful in supporting individual needs in a private way and help meet all of the needs highlighted above. The children enjoy the spaces, view them positively and will frequently use our Safespace symbol to indicate that they would like to access one of the spaces.

They are extremely flexible spaces and will always be well used as they can be so many different things to different children.”

Eleanor Sheppard, Head of Mile End Primary School, Aberdeen

Who it’s forThe Siesta is designed for those who may have a lot of movement and strength, but are unable or disinclined to pull up or climb over the high sides. The customisable design makes it suitable for those with complex or varying nursing needs and those requiring a hoist. Its robust ‘flex-out’ sides can be kicked, punched, head-butted or rocked against, and help keep a person safe from injuries and from falling against hard surfaces during seizures.

UsesThe Siesta creates a safe, low stimulation environment that promotes easier settling at bedtime and improves sleep patterns, providing a safer environment for those who continue to wake at night.

The Siesta’s versatility and easy clean design make it particularly suitable for hospital settings or other situations where a wide range of clients’ needs can be accommodated by one extremely tough and versatile piece of equipment.

Opening panels on up to all four sides, allow access for nursing and care, including head end for emergency resuscitation.

a versatile, strong and comfortable high-sided sleep area, suitable for those with limited mobility

“Choosing the appropriate bed for our service was a lengthy process. Having finally chosen the Siesta, we feel that it can provide a safe environment and ensure that the children get a good nights sleep.”

Sies

taFeaturesThe Siesta is made with the same heavy duty PVC fabric as all our products, supported on a strong frame and base. The walls flex out to absorb impact and so require a clearance of 30cm (12”) from any hard surface.

The Siesta can be jet washed, or the fabric can be easily removed for steam-cleaning, to support infection control.

Opening panels can be zipped open and clipped back, or rolled up for ease of access.

Viewing panels allow in light, create a sense of space, and facilitate observation and communication between client and carer, which can be restricted by other designs of high sided beds. A viewing panel at the foot end can allow the client to watch television or enjoy sensory products.

The Siesta has a raised platform to accommodate mobile hoisting and an open top to accommodate ceiling track hoisting. The Siesta comes with a 15cm (6”) mattress as standard. The feet have holes to enable the Siesta to be secured to the floor, for both additional stability and to prevent movement on slippery floors.

OptionsRoll-up opening sides and viewing panels – The Siesta comes with 1 roll-up opening side, with an inbuilt viewing panel as standard. Extra roll up opening sides, with or without viewing panels, can be added. A non opening side with an extra viewing panel is also an option. However, adding more openings/viewing panels can work against the spirit of creating a low stimulation environment.

Closed cell padded side – allows the Siesta to be situated closer to a wall.

Access holes - can be provided to your specifications for gastrostomy, oxygen or other tubes.

a robust high-sided sleep area, which can be easily dismantled and stored

“The young man’s parents were sceptical when I first suggested one, but as we had one in our stores, I persuaded them to at least trial it. After all, they had not slept properly for 13 years. I phoned to see how it was going after approximately 6 weeks.

His father was raving about it. ‘It is unbelievable!’ he said. His son sleeps all night, every night since he’s had it. They are so happy, as they have never had so much sleep. Their son shows his new bed to everyone who visits the house.”

Gordon Heath, Senior Occupational Therapist, Cannock and Lichfield Children’s Disability Service

Who it’s forThe Cosyfit is designed for individuals with limited mobility and is robust enough for adults and children who may rock, thrash about, push or kick. For those with the ability to stand, walk, pull to standing or climb, we usually recommend the Safespace. The Cosyfit also creates a safe environment for those who may otherwise be restricted to a wheelchair.

Visit www.safespaces.co.uk/safespaces-films to see a film of the Cosyfit in use.

UsesIt is used mainly as a safe bed for those at risk of falling or hurting themselves on metal or wooden bed surrounds. Its soft, high sides, open top and large viewing panel create a comfortable sleep area.

The large soft window on one or both sides allows light in and creates a sense of space whilst allowing the user to watch television or enjoy sensory equipment. This also helps with communication and reduces the feeling of isolation or containment experienced by those in beds with very high sides.

Users will often seek it out at other times too, to relax or play - a place to feel safe in. The Cosyfit provides much needed peace of mind for carers and parents, reducing anxieties about injuries from falls, rolling and seizures. Noise levels are reduced as there are no hard surfaces to bang on.

The Cosyfit can be quickly and easily dismantled for storage, making it ideal for respite centres and care homes.

“Even though it has only been a short time since it arrived Joseph’s sleeping pattern has shown improvements and this has been of great benefit to all the family. For the first time in nearly seven years we overslept due to Joseph’s improved sleep! I can usually rely on him to wake the entire household anywhere between 3am and 6am. Last Monday I was horrified and yet delighted to find that it was 7.30am and no one else was awake! It’s the best thing we’ve ever got for him.”

a high-sided, height adjustable bed with Trendelenburg option

Who it’s forDesigned for those who cannot stand, but who have the strength or capacity to rock, thrash, push or kick, and so need safer bed sides. It is used both in the home as well as in residential and care settings.

UsesThe robust, yet soft, padded high sides provide protection for those at risk of falling out of bed or hurting themselves on hard bed surrounds and other hard surfaces. They are strong enough to withstand the pushing and kicking of most adults, as well as children.

The large soft window on one or both sides allows light in and creates a sense of space, whilst allowing the user to watch television or enjoy sensory equipment. This also helps with communication and reduces the feeling of isolation or containment experienced by those in beds with very high sides.

The Cosyfit Hi-Lo can improve the quality of life for those who may spend long periods in bed but who need high sides for their own safety. The corded handset allows height and Trendelenburg adjustment.

“We are a short break unit and therefore need to cater for all manner of disabilities. The Cosyfit Hi-Lo is ideal for our purposes, it has resolved several issues that we had. We use it instead of a hospital bed with cot sides and it is much safer. We now have children able to watch TV in bed through the window. We have always had excellent, quick service from your company.”

For more details see Accessories on page 18.Cosyfit Hi-Lo® (Electric Profiling)For those with extremely limited mobility who need support with sitting up and raising themselves, we offer the Cosyfit Hi-Lo (Profiling) option. The back rest and knee break functions, as well as tilting, reverse tilting and height-adjustability, provide support with many aspects of nursing care.

It can be provided with sides up to a maximum height of 76cm (30”) and, as with all profiling beds, is suitable only for those who cannot climb over the raised back rest and knee break.

For more mobile clients we would recommend the Cosyfit Hi-Lo which can have higher sides, with the optional Manual Profiling Set. This consists of a foam wedge for 2-position back support and a cylinder roll to act as a knee break.

“We purchased the Hi-lo bed for a 75 year old lady who had significant behavioural problems and was at high risk of self harm using standard equipment. Having researched the market, and on advice from an occupational therapist, this bed fits the bill. It has proved successful in allowing us to care for her in a safe environment and prevent any injuries to herself.”

“I have just had a fantastic few days in Devon and tried out the Voyager for the first time. It was a great success as Ben accepted it (it has the same feel/smell as his original Safespace) and although he didn’t sleep any more than normal he was safe and less noisy!”

“We have just returned from holiday in Florida and used the Voyager for the first time. “Safespaces cut out many sensory impressions that otherwise overwhelm and arouse our pupils. Being in a Safespace helps the child to relax, reduce their anxiety and promotes a feeling of safety.

For one of our pupils the Safespace is one of the few places he is actually safe at night. The Safespace means that he is unable to access any plugs, radiators or other objects that he might use inappropriately. This has meant that he now sleeps between 8 to 9 hours a night and no longer engages in risky daytime behaviour.

For some of our pupils who engage in self injurious behaviour the Safespace provides a truly safe space. The Safespace limits any sensory feedback as well as preventing any harm to the pupil so this quickly promotes a de-escalation, and keeps both the pupil and staff safe.

We have had our staff as well as members of my family sleep in Safespaces and all have enjoyed it saying that it provides a lovely cosy sleeping environment.”
