ATW Rhode Island facility to open in October
H C Stark fuel cell partnershipH C Starck Ceramics and Kerafol, a Germany-based manufacturer of ceramic tapes, have partnered to manu-facture, sell, and distribute high-tem-perature SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells) doped with scandium.
In the partnership, Kerafol will con-tribute its specialized knowledge of scandium-doped electrolytes and H C Starck will supply its expertise in elec-trode manufacturing to the partnership.
The scandium-doped zirconia used in these fuel cells is highly conductive, and scandium-doped solid oxide fuel cells have the highest output potential of all electrolyte-supported fuel cells (ESC). The new cells make it possible to manufacture SOFC stacks and systems with improved performance and a long service life. Scandium-doped cells are particularly suited for use with interconnectors which contain a high percentage of chromium (CrFe5Y). The cells will be marketed under the product name ESC 10.
“I am extremely pleased that thanks to H C Starck and Kerafol bundling their fuel cell expertise, we were able to develop this new, promising fuel cell product in such a short period of time,” said Dr Andreas Sieverdingbeck, presi-dent of H C Starck.

SCM supports growing Asian copper marketCopper and bronze specialist SCM Metal Products, Inc, based in North Carolina, USA, plans to expand its cop-per powder plant production capacity in Suzhou, China, to support the growing market in Asia.
Construction of the plant will be com-pleted during the summer of 2011.
“The success of our plant in China has gone beyond our expectations,” said Barton White, SCM president. “[...] We have successfully implemented the same quality, efficiency, and safety standards that we have in the US and we continue to have a strong emphasis on research and development.”

ATW Companies has scheduled the opening of Parmatech-Proform Corp’s new manufacturing facility in Rhode Island, USA, as reported in January.
The new facility, which will serve as Proform’s headquarters will focus on metal injection moulding (MIM) produc-tion and secondary operations for the medical, telecommunications, firearms, hand-tools, semiconductor, and elec-tronic packaging markets. It will open in October.
“We are very excited to be opening Proform’s new East Providence facility,
where we will showcase our technical MIM expertise,” said Peter C. Frost, president of ATW Companies. “MIM has established itself as a mainstream metal fabrication technique, and the existence of two separate facilities offers signifi-cantly enhanced logistical, security, and redundancy benefits. It also places us closer to customers and markets.”
Proform is a wholly owned sub-sidiary of ATW Companies, acquired by ATW in 2009 to augment Parmatech’s California-based MIM operation.
