We are very fortunate to have spacious and attractive school grounds, including two playing fields, basketball courts and quiet garden areas. Students may not take food to the oval areas.

Downball, basketball and soccer are very popular at recess and lunch. Students are encouraged to bring a ball and get some exercise during break times, but are reminded that they must finish up and make their way back into the buildings at the first bell to ensure they are punctual to class.

Supervised access to the gym occurs on a rotating basis. Check the Newsfeed to see when your year level is scheduled. The Library is open at lunch time as well as before from 8.15am and after school until 4pm.

Keep an eye on the Compass Newsfeed to see when lunchtime activities such as Chess Club are running. If you’d like to start a new lunchtime activity, suggestions are welcome!

If sports shoes are worn to play during break times, students must leave time to change back into correct shoes before going to class.

There are many quiet spots around the school to sit and chat with friends or read a book.

One of the most important skills to develop during the transition to high school is organisation and good time management.

The Homework Planner is a vital tool for organising homework, due dates, keeping track of excursions and other special events. It is also an important means of communication between home and school. Planners will be distributed on the first day of Term 1 and should go home each night and come back to school each morning.

Students should check their timetable each evening and ensure they are prepared for the next day’s classes. Pack any books, equipment, sports uniform, homework in your school bag the night before so you are all set for the next day.

There is a canteen on site, offering a range of hot and cold food and drinks for purchase before school and at recess and lunch times.

It is very important that any medical conditions or allergies are recorded and a management plan provided to the school. See Office staff for the necessary forms.

Students are asked to remember they are representatives of Auburn High School and should conduct themselves accordingly at all times, including during the journey to and from

school. This includes correctly wearing the full school uniform and behaving in a respectful and considerate manner.

If you are planning to travel to or from school using public transport, there are trams, trains and buses nearby. It is recommended students undergo a ‘trial run’ before the start of the school year. We remind all students to take care when crossing roads and train tracks. Use pedestrian crossings and unplug your earphones before crossing.

All Auburn High School students and teachers are actively involved in the school House system. House names were chosen by students to reflect diversity of endeavour and achievement by outstanding Australians to whom we can all aspire. (Cathy) , (Fred) Hollows(Dame Elizabeth) Murdoch and (Tim) represent achievement in Sports, Science, Philanthropy and the Arts.

Students will be allocated their houses and will contribute to team building activities that reflect the diversity of talents across our student body and which reflect the AHS DARE values of Diversity, Aspiration, Respect and Excellence. This may be through participation in school events such as Arts Week and Science Week, participation in academic competitions, involvement in sporting events and contribution to community projects.

At Auburn, we place a significant emphasis on developing a strong student voice and our student leadership model is based on a vertical house system. International student also get the opportunity to take part in the school leadership program.

Formal Student Leadership positions are available at each level to represent each House. Senior and Middle School vacancies are advertised in Term 4 for the subsequent year and Junior School positions early in Term 1. To be considered for these roles, students must submit a written application and attend an interview. Year 7 students are encouraged to apply.

International undergraduate students can save 50 per cent on an annual myki with an international Undergraduate Student Education pass (iUSEpass) myki card. You can save even more if you usually top up with myki Money. Find out if you're eligible and how to apply. An iUSEpass can save you money even if you’re not in Melbourne all year. You only need to travel in Zone 1+2 for 98 days of the year to make your money back.

Here’s an example…

Zhang Li is an international undergraduate student from China. She travels to classes three days a week, works at a cafe two days a week and goes into the city with friends on weekends. She also goes back to China for three months every year. If Zhang Li travels in Zone 1+2 six days a week, 40 weeks a year, topping up with myki Money costs her $2016. An iUSEpass costs $861.25. She saves $1154.75.

iUSEpass covers all your travel in Melbourne

Your iUSEpass gives you unlimited travel on trains, trams and buses in your institute’s zone. Most institutes are in Zone 1+2, which covers all of metropolitan Melbourne. You can use your iUSEpass for all your travel in Melbourne, even if you’re just going out with friends. It also gives you access to all-night weekend travel on Night Network. Just top up with myki Money if you want to travel outside Zone 1+2.

Eligibility

To be eligible for an iUSEpass, you need to be:

a full-time international student enrolled in a bachelor or associate degree, diploma or advanced diploma studying at an educational institute that’s signed up to the iUSEpass program.

Please note: International exchange students, students with refugee status and recipients of Australian Award Scholarships are already eligible for discounted travel. The iUSEpass doesn’t apply to these students. New Zealand students are eligible for the iUSEpass scheme. Mobile myki is not available for iUSEpass.

For further information please go to https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/concessions-and-free-travel/children-and-students/international-students/

While living and studying abroad may be an exciting adventure, it can also present a range of challenges. Having decided to study and live in Australia you will be undertaking adjustments in many areas of your life including cultural, social and academic. It is also important to remember that while these changes are occurring you will be embarking upon a new semester of study (for many of you in a different language) and be away from your usual supports, networks and resources. Adjustment to a new country and culture is a process that occurs gradually and takes time. The values, beliefs, traditions and customs of your home country may vary greatly from those in Australia and adapting to the Australian way of life may take some time. This advice may help:

Listen, observe and ask questions Become familiar with your neighbourhood Become involved Use English in and out of class Ask for help Join extra-curriculum activities Maintain some of the routines and rituals you may have had in your home country. Sense of humour Finally, relax and enjoy the journey!
