Mike Buttram has been working hardto meet his goal of losing 20 poundsduring the 13-week Lighten Up!competition. And he is on track toexceed his goal!

A few weeks ago I had lost 20pounds, and Ive been working out sincethen. Im excited to do my last weigh-inand find out how much Ive lost,Mike said.

The results of Mikes transformationare striking. His friends and family haveall noticed, along with acquaintances

who dont know about his participation

in the competition. Getting that positive response hasreally helped Mike put his changes in perspective.The past couple weeks Ive heard a lot of people

just randomly saying, Mike you look really good.People who dont know anything about theprogram.

A classmate who was unaware of Mikes battle tolose weight complimented Mike on his physique theother day. This kind of unprompted complimentfuels Mikes desire to keep working hard.

That one little comment made my day, Mikesaid. Getting compliments has really helped mekeep that drive. Ive had a lot of support.

But beyond the compliments, Mike is actually

starting to see a real change in himself. Whenthe mirror is often your harshest critic, it is mostrewarding to be able to recognize those positivechanges yourself.

Its really hard to see results in yourself,Mike said. Losing weight, you get a lot offeedback from outside, but its difficult to see itfor yourself. Im starting to actually see myselfchange, which is awesome.

Mike and his personal trainer, Rich Smith ofCourthouse Athletic Club, attribute much of Mikessuccess to the customized medicine-ball workout routinethey put together. Mike squats holding a medicine ball,military presses the medicine ball, then rolls it to Rich.

Rich rolls the ball back, and they repeat the cycle.Mike started this routine a couple weeks into theprogram, using a 6 pound medicine ball and completingone set of 20 reps. Now hes worked up to a 12 pound balland completes three sets of 25 reps.

Hes lost a good thirty pounds with just that routine,Rich said.

They also increased the intensity of the workout byadding a lateral movement.

Now I have to side-step to get the ball. It makes theworkout a whole new level, Mike said. It kicks my buttmore than any of the weight machines. I know its

working.Rich is encouraged by the results he sees in Mike, one of

the best being his level of confidence.Mike does swing dancing now, he has confidence. He

walks in here with his head held up high. Its prettyawesome to see.

For Mike, these changes are better than winning a prize.I dont have to win first place. I just wanted to kick

myself into gear with a new lifestyle, and Ive definitelydone that. Im happy, Mike said.

Becky Dittemore-Escalante is also making great strideswith her weight loss program. Her workouts with personaltrainer Kathy Kaplan at Anytime Fitness have stepped upin intensity, and she is seeing dramatic results.

Things are going well, Becky said. Im droppingweight and clothing sizes.

Kathy recently noticed a lot of changes in Beckys bodycomposition.

Last time we met, I noticed a big change in her, such adifference. I told her shes got to start wearing some sexierclothes instead of these baggy shirts, Kathy said with a smile.

Like Mike, Becky gets lots of compliments from friends aswell, which boost morale and encourage her to keep working.But now, after over twelve weeks, Becky is also seeing resultsherself. Her toughest critic-herself-can no longer deny thechanges shes experienced.

As Kathy suggested, Becky has even changed the way shedresses to accommodate her new figure. Its a great reward for allher hard work.

I am proud to be wearing a skirt during this warm weather,and even have a waistline, which was hidden under my fat,Becky said.

The key to Beckys success has been a consistent routine of cardioand strength training, and adjusting her diet.Ive been pretty good about staying on track with

my diet. The most difficult time is while Im at homein front of the television an M &M now and thensure tastes good! Becky said.

Aside from the occasional chocolate indulgence,Becky keeps on track by limiting her portion sizes andmaking healthy choices, which she tracks online atAnytime Fitness website. Inputting her cardio andfood log allows Kathy to check up on her anytime, soshe can provide some encouragement or constructive

criticism where needed.Kathy keeps Beckys workouts varied every

week, and that variety really helps keep hermetabolism pumping.We change our workouts weekly, and were

seeing good results. I like to give her a lot ofdifferent exercises she can take home with her,even after the program ends, Kathy said.

With Kathys help, Becky has made a truetransformation of her body, her habits and herattitude. And seeing those results for herselfmakes it worth all the hard work she put in.

I am extremely grateful for the Trader and Anytime Fitness forthis awesome opportunity, Becky said. Ive been given back aportion of my life.

Buying local products will reduce greenhouse gas emis-sions (GHGs) caused by the transport of merchandise.

Choosing products with a minimum of packaging willprevent creating more garbage, which will in turnreduce GHGs, the overexploitation of natural resources,and waste disposal sites.

Reducing your water consumption will protect thisimportant natural resource and will also help reduce thepollution produced by its treatment.

Avoiding the consumption of meat from endangered

species, such as red tuna, will help them in their fightfor survival.

ON THE ROAD: Opting for public and eco-friendly forms of transpor-

tation will reduce the number of cars on our roads aswell as the GHGs produced by them.
