Two weeks into Auburns fitness competition, Lighten Up!, our contestants

are already making headway toward their goals. At Courthouse Athletic Club, Sue

Metcalf is enthusiastic about her workouts with personal trainer Mo Merritt.

Sue, a 53 year old caregiver for seniors, wants to shed pounds and build

muscle. In the past, Sue lost 30 pounds, but she did it the wrong way. She ate a

very minimal amount of food, depriving her body of nutrients and not working

out. Now, with Mos guidance, Sue is working on eating a balanced diet and

building a lean, strong body.

Sue is working through Courthouses Fitness Express room,a circuit that

works on the three major areas of fitness at once: cardio, strength and flexibility.

Mo also encourages Sue to try different group fitness classes offered at the gym,

like Zumba, Yoga and FitStix, a tip anyone can use to jump-start their fitness

program. Variety is great for inspiration.

Mix it up. It motivates you to keep working out, Mo said.

Sue is also working on stretching and muscle toning with free weights and a balance ball. Mo reminds her to

focus carefully on her form. At home or at the gym, she recommends looking in the mirror to keep on track.

Form is key, Mo said. You never want to sacrifice form to do more reps.

On this new regimen, Sue has actually gained five pounds during the first week. This is typical for many who

make positive lifestyle changes. It seems alarming, but dont worry if the scale goes up a little when you start

working out. According to Mo, the temporary increase in weight is good in the long run.

Muscle weighs more and fat takes up more space. Muscle burns more calories, which is why we need to eatprotein consistently. Otherwise as youre working out, your body eats itself, eats the muscle, Mo s aid.

Sue can see that the weight gain is balanced by her shrinking waistline.

I do feel like Ive lost inches. I have to pull up my pants, she said.

Mo has enjoyed working with Sue because she is so enthusiastic and motivated. Sue comes every day to work

out on her own, and during her sessions with Mo, she remains positive.

Let me tell you, shes a little ball of gumption and very enthusiastic. Its

inspiring, Mo said. Shes always smiling. I love it because I love to work with

people who are excited to work out. It makes my job easier.

Another enthusiastic competitor working with Mo is Christy Green, a 36 year

old housewife from Auburn. Christys major challenge is making time forherself. With a new one-year old baby, Christys first priority is her family, so

her health has taken a backseat.

Like Sue, Christy has lost weight in the past. She used Weight Watchers to

slim down, but she put the weight back on after having her baby.

Because of her background with dieting, Christy understands a lot of the

nutrition principals that comprise good health.

I know it all. I just didnt care anymore. It was hard to count and track everything, Christy said .

Now, with Mos supervision, Christy is watching her portions again and aiming to eat more fresh, perishable

foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meat and whole grains.

While at the gym working out with Mo, Christy is focusing on breathing for a more centered workout.

I use a lot of breathing because I teach pilates, Mo said. Remember, oxygen burns body fat. That s whyyou want to have rhythmic breathing with exercise.

Mo helps Christy find a rhythm to her breathing by giving her tips she can remember.

In through your nose and out through your mouth, Mo said. I worked with a lady who always said, inhale

to smell the roses and exhale to blow out the candles. It helps you remember how to do it properly.

Christy works hard in the gym, breaking a sweat with a rueful smile. And Mo likes to see her clients sweat.

Sweating is good. It means youre burning calories. Youre releasing toxins, Mo said.

With Mo by their side to motivate them, Christy and Sue will keep on sweating and whittling their waists.
