Did You Know?> There are approximately 50 extinct or dormant
volcanoes in the greater Auckland area.
> Aucklands Hauraki Gulf has more than 30 islands.
> The Civic Theatre in central Auckland, which openedin 1929, is one of just seven surviving atmospherictheatres in the world.
Aucklands landscape is dotted with the cones of volcanoesthat erupted comparatively recently in geological time, withthe oldest (Auckland Domains Pukekawa) having erupted140,000-150,000 years ago.
As there are about 50 extinct or dormant volcanoes in theAuckland Volcanic Field, all within about 20km of the citycentre, theres no excuse not to go exploring. In fact, novisit to Auckland is complete without visiting at least one ofthese volcanoes and among the most popular are RangitotoIsland, Mt Eden, One Tree Hill and Mt Victoria. The volcaniccones were fortified in pre-European times.

Auckland is home to a third of New Zealands population, andits easy to see the attraction. Its cosmopolitan central businessdistrict boasts everything from modern fine dining andboutique shopping to beautiful heritage buildings and gardens, andits all framed by picture-perfect harbours, beautiful beaches andimpressive volcanoes.
But the main feature dominating Aucklands landscape is the SkyTower, the tallest tower in the southern hemisphere. Inside the toweryoull find first-class restaurants and bars, a lively casino and atheatre. This 328m-high structure gives the best views in Auckland;go up to the Sky Deck for a head-turning 360-degree look atAuckland that, on a clear day, reaches the 80km mark.
Nearby Queen St is the commercial hub of the city, and stretches from thewaterfront up to Karangahape Rd (K Rd). In this precinct youll be treated to great shopping (browse around the stores of renowned NewZealand designers), contemporary cafs, beautiful parks and photo-worthy buildings.
Afterwards, head to the stylish inner-city suburbs of Parnell, Newmarket and Ponsonby todelight in the caf culture and sip an obligatory Auckland latte.
But to complete your trip to the City of Sails, getting out and about on the harbour is amust; learn to sail, take in the scenery on a dinner cruise or catch a ferry to Devonport orWaiheke Island.

Popular Home Auckland is New Zealands largest metropolitan area and also the largestPolynesian city in the world. Maori and Pacific influences are obvious inAuckland, but there is a great mix of cultures in this city as evidenced bythe wide choice of cuisine. Auckland regularly appears on the list of theworlds best places to live. In fact, in a 2010 worldwide quality of livingsurvey, Auckland retained its rating as the equal fourth-best city. Thecombination of vibrant cosmopolitan living and countless outdoorrecreation options is hugely appealing.

Desirable Auckland> There are several versions of what Aucklands traditional
name, Tamaki Makau Rau, translates as. One widely heldversion suggests it means desired by many and as NewZealands biggest city, it appears this still holds true forAuckland.
> After the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840,Auckland became New Zealands capital but thisdistinction was short-lived. Owing to its central locationbetween the two main islands, among other reasons,Wellington snatched the honour from Auckland in 1865and remains the countrys capital today.
Aucklands most southern ward is Franklin with its undulatinggreen hills and the mouth of New Zealands largest river, theWaikato. Franklin also encompasses the Hunua Ranges, which areentwined with fantastic walking tracks.
North of Auckland is the Rodney Ward taking in thenorthernmost suburbs of Auckland. Rodney is mainly farmland, with a large number of lifestyle blocks in places like Kumeu,Helensville and Coatesville. These places are popular with thosewho enjoy city life from a distance.

On the Lookout
The Auckland region is blessed with a bewildering number ofbreathtaking vantage points. Mt Eden would have to rankamongst the best; its full-circle views are purely sensational, giving a contrasting glimpse whichever direction you turn. Fromhere you can take a fresh peek at Aucklands central businessdistrict and suburbs, both the citys harbours, the manysurrounding islands and volcanoes, the airport and much more.
Nearby One Tree Hill and Mt Wellington are impressive viewingspots too, while Rangitoto Island is worth climbing. Devonporthas two worthy choices Mt Victoria and North Head and theArataki Visitor Centre and Piha Hill also provide magicalviewing opportunities.
