Climb aboard the heritage vessel fl eet and sail the sparkling Waitemata harbour. Covering 93 square kilometres, Waiheke is the second-

largest island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, and is a stunning

place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Waiheke’s laidback holiday feel will have you hooked from the moment

you land and you’ll soon be bowled over by its sandy beaches, warm

climate, more than 30 boutique vineyards, bustling cafés and markets.

Fullers and SeaLink Ferries run regular ferry services from Auckland

(just 35 minutes), which make it a popular holiday and day trip

destination. The beautiful bush and sea views have also attracted many

well known authors, sculptors, artists and potters, and there is a lively

arts scene.

Waiheke Island’s largest township is Oneroa, at the western end of

the island. The long, sandy ocean beach is just a short walk from the

township’s bustling cafés, craft outlets and restaurants. Palm Beach

occupies a pretty, sheltered cove, and at Onetangi there is a long sandy

beach popular for swimming, surfi ng and

other water-based activities.

Walking is an excellent way to see the

island – there are many designated

walkways including a coastal track

from Oneroa Bay to Palm Beach.

Sea kayaking

around the island’s

bays is another

option to explore

the stunning

coastline. Cycle

available. Local

Auckland has plenty of great beauty salons and spas

where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself

thoroughly pampered. So make the most of the many

options available and take the time to spend on yourself.

Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many treatments

available; enjoy a relaxing facial or invigorating massage, or why not

give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a

pedicure.

For some real indulgence, lie back and relax and enjoy an aromatic full

body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples

treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering

together.

Top up your tan in safety at one of Auckland solariums, or give yourself

the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup

session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliation.

If you fi nd yourself short of time to get to a salon, consider a mobile

beauty clinic that will come to you – so you can enjoy a pampering in

the comfort of your own room.

Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure

you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

Relax and enjoy

a blissful hot

stone massage,

an aromatic full

body polish or

body wrap.

accommodation

on Jasons.co.nz

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments

to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city

centre to green and charming suburbs, or meeting rooms

conveniently close to the airport, Auckland has room for you.

Look for the Qualmark star rating system to

ascertain how an accommodation property has been

independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates

various categories of accommodation in New Zealand

and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities.

You can also ask to see the room – inspection should

be welcome.

Hotels generally off er tea/coff ee making facilities, a bathroom and

an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal

for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually off er

self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fi xed budget, try some of the

backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities.

The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping

in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there

are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To fi nd out

Driving in NZThe offi cial New Zealand Road Code guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations.

Road Rules

New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left

and give way to all traffi c on your right. All traffi c turning right

should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction

and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections

where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law

requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle car to wear a

seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s

‘hands-free’. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and

50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New

Zealand Police enforce all traffi c laws, including the speed limit and

dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police

within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency

accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle

registration number.

Tips for Safe Driving

• Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fi nes can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor.

• Winding roads, diffi cult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200–300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions.

• Ringing bells and fl ashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care especially at crossings not controlled by barrier arms.

West Auckland

Head west and explore Waitakere’s lush native bush, enjoy a

stroll on the wild black sand beaches or relax in one of the

wineries.

Shuttle services run daily from central Auckland to the West Coast beaches.

If you have your own transport, make a pit-stop in Titirangi village for a

coff ee, and perhaps even catch the Titirangi Village Market (last Sunday of

the month) at Titirangi War Memorial Hall from 10am until 2pm.

Continue west along Scenic Drive to Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway

to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which covers more than 16,000

hectares of native rainforest and coastline. Packed with fascinating

exhibits, the visitor centre alone could keep you entertained for hours,

but if you’re keen to stretch your legs there’s over 250km of walking

trails to choose from. Tracks start directly from the centre, with a

wide range of others just a short drive away. Try Fair Falls track, or

explore Cascade Kauri Park, located in the heart of the Ark in the Park

conservation project.

Head further west for a bracing stroll on the black sand beaches of

Karekare or Piha, their dark colour a product of high volumes of volcanic

iron rich sand. The Kitekite Falls trail can also be accessed from Piha, or

enjoy the views after climbing half-way up imposing Lion Rock (walk

down to the waters edge to see the Lion). Venture further afi eld and you

can hit the waves with Muriwai surf school, or for some fun with the kids

slide down the massive sand dunes at Lake Wainamu at Bethells – don’t

miss the delicious Kumara chips at the Bethells Beach Café.

city but feel like a world away. Enjoy a bushwalk, listen for

native birds and explore the sandy beaches which are all

right on the city’s doorstep.

Waiheke Island is a day-trippers’ dream and a fantastic place to take

a retreat from city life. It takes just half an hour to get to Waiheke

and you’ll soon ease into the easy-going island lifestyle. There is a

vibrant arts and crafts scene and many vineyards dotted around the

island, so make sure you sample some of the local drops. Fullers

and SeaLink Ferries run a regular service to Waiheke.

Rangitoto Island is one of Auckland’s most iconic landmarks. Its

600 year-old volcanic cone is clearly visible from many parts of the

city and you’ll be rewarded with 360 degree views if you hike to the

summit (259 metres high). For those who prefer a more leisurely

stroll, try the easier tracks which skirt the coastline. Don’t forget

your lunch as there aren’t any shops on Rangitoto. Fullers Ferries

operate to Rangitoto.

Tiritiri Matangi is a nature lover’s paradise and a haven for wildlife.

Unwanted predators have been eradicated, and more than 300,000

native trees planted, to make Tiritiri an open bird sanctuary for
