Bringing in the visitors

Every New Zealander knows we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and over the past year, we’ve welcomed a record three million visitors, which is fantastic news. This milestone is a great testament to New Zealand’s tourism industry and to the hard work of all those involved in the sector. Not only are record numbers of visitors coming to New Zealand, they’re also staying for longer and spending more than ever before.

In the year to July, those three million visitors spent a total of $8.7 billion during their stay – up 28 percent on the previous 12 months. This is helping to boost our economy, not only in our main cities, but also in the regions and creating more jobs and opportunities for New Zealanders.

Tourism was directly responsible for over 94,100 jobs in the industry and supported a further 72,700 in the year to March 2014. It’s a significant part of New Zealand’s economy – our second biggest export earner – contributing around seven percent to our GDP.

This is why the National-led Government has invested an unprecedented $600 million in tourism and tourism promotion. Our approach is working. Campaigns promoting New Zealand as an outstanding visitor destination reached a global audience of more than 1.2 billion people last year.

New Zealand benefits strongly from tourism growth. That’s why the Government has invested in hosting major events like the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup and the FIFA U20 World Cup, and projects like the New Zealand Cycle Trail.

The Cricket World Cup boosted our GDP by $110 million, created over 2,000 new jobs and showcased New Zealand to an international television audience of more than 1.5 billion.

The New Zealand Cycle Trail consists of 23 great rides across the country and is helping us attract more tourists, both local and international and its popularity continues to grow.

In September, the Government also authorised a strategic alliance between Air New Zealand and Air China, which will see travellers able to access more flights and lower fares between New Zealand and China. China is our second largest tourist market behind Australia, with visitor arrivals due to double in the next five years.

A raft of urban cycleway projects in Auckland are also underway as part of the Government’s Urban Cycleways Programme. These projects will improve the cycle network in the central city, and the eastern and western connections to the city, as well as links to public transport hubs.

Tourism makes a sizeable contribution to New Zealand’s diverse and resilient economy and I look forward to reaching our next tourism milestone.

Aligning return expectations with reality

Advisory groups are a great addition to any small and medium enterprise, adding capability to the company in areas such as leadership and management, team development, sales and marketing, HRM, internal processes and operations. Businesses of all sizes can benefit from having their own team of external advisors.

An advisory group is a team of people selected by the owners of the business (or a Board if the business is large enough) to guide, counsel and advise a company’s CEO and management on any number of issues in a flexible open and consultative manner.

Advisors from different disciplines complement the strengths and expertise of the company’s management. Typically they may include a business coach, the company accountant, or a specialist in any other discipline as required. Advisory groups can be standing (ongoing) or ad hoc (one time) in nature.

The advisory group members will have a range of skill sets that will add to and therefore assist the company. An advisory group is particularly useful in start-up and small companies, providing fresh ideas and unique perspectives.

Support and guidance from your advisory group may give you a greater chance to accelerate growth, improve financial performance, manage risk and enhance operational performance. The whole point of having an advisory group is to improve the company performance by tapping in to the skills of the members.

Companies considering setting up an advisory group must answer a key question: “Why we are establishing an advisory group and what do we want out of it?”

Thinking carefully about an advisory board’s purpose will ensure that it will be structured to maximise its contribution to an organisation’s success.

An advisory group should consist of the owner and people with skills and or experience who can add value to the business. Group members must have the background experience and skill sets to add value through their capabilities matching the company needs.

The nature of what is sought should determine the type of people who will comprise the board. The group must clearly define its purpose and desired outcomes. Membership should represent a good balance and have the right chemistry to work their way through various issues that may arise. Compatibility is very important.

They are mechanisms to improve your company performance through the addition of different skills sets, fresh ideas and all in a non-threatening open, collaborative, consultative, user friendly environment. In effect, they are a safe harbour for discussing ideas and initiatives.

In August the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) and the Commission for Financial Capability (CFFC) released a survey of more than 1,000 people who were over 50 years of age about their expectations for retirement. Nearly half have yet to do any retirement planning, a quarter have never completed an investment risk profile questionnaire and, of most concern, all respondents on average believed that an investment return starts to become ‘fairly high’ only when it hits a whopping 15 percent.

I took three main points from my reading of the results.

First, it is clear that many people need to do more planning. The survey found that 46 percent of respondents hadn’t done any planning about their retirement. This is a concern given how important it is to set investment objectives and plan retirement goals.

Secondly, most people are risk averse when it comes to investing. Of those surveyed, 83 percent believe high risk investments are to be avoided.

Lastly, the survey shows that many people have unrealistic return expectations. Following ongoing falls in interest rates, a softer growth outlook and lower dividend yields on shares, our research team have recently further reduced their long-term return forecasts for a balanced portfolio to around five percent to six percent, depending on the mix of assets.

Compare that with the results of the survey which showed that respondents on average thought a five percent return to be fairly low, nine percent to be a medium return, and 15 percent to be fairly high. In my view, the ‘medium’ and ‘fairly high’ returns would require an investor to take extraordinarily high risks to achieve.

Remember, the people who expect these returns are the same people who, a few questions earlier, also said that high risk investments are to be avoided. Something clearly doesn’t add up. This is the key takeaway from the survey for me - most investors have a chronic misalignment in expectations between risk and return.

Advisers face this every day, which is why educating investors about risk and return is such a key part of their role. They also have to ensure that retirement planning is based on realistic returns to avoid people either not saving enough for retirement or, when retired, taking unsustainable drawings from their capital.

The resources boom in Australia during the last 10 years and subsequent construction activity has seen employee wages skyrocket and many businesses become unsustainable.

Now, companies scrambling to remain competitive are making significant redundancies with some sectors seeing as many as 20,000 jobs disappear in one state.

From 2006, wages in the resource and resource-related construction sectors increased by as much as 100 percent. In many cases, companies paid workers above market salaries to simply attract and retain them - in some cases at the sacrifice of hiring for competency, experience, cultural fit and attitude.

Ultimately, businesses and companies performed poorly due to high wage costs, poor employee engagement, lack of leadership and high staff turnover.

Like the Australia resource boom, New Zealand, and especially the Canterbury earthquake rebuild, has entered an unprecedented growth period similar to the one we noticed in our Brisbane office in the 2006 boom. Companies that continue to focus on hiring staff with the right cultural fit, attitude, level of competency for the position, and ultimately keep a conservative approach to salaries, will build a workforce that is sustainable, engaged and will ultimately deliver high productivity.

The key to growing staff numbers sustainably in any business is having competent leadership, as staff generally leave their leader and not the business. A salary increase is a short term motivator. If businesses focus on strong leadership, especially in middle management, promote career development opportunities, drive a high performance culture in a fun environment, and give staff challenging work, pay will be well down the scale as to why staff will leave your business.

Like Australia, some sectors in New Zealand could experience a changing market at some stage in the future.

However, this may not be to the same extent as the impact of the resources downturn in Australia, so businesses who kept their cost base competitive or had flexibility to handle cost pressures, would remain sustainable into the future.

More importantly, businesses that place emphasis on attracting and nurturing ‘A-players’ through driving an engaged and productive workforce will not only prosper, they will flourish.

People are the foundation of any business and if hiring standards drop to meet the growth demand, learning and development ceases and middle management are promoted beyond their competency, long term business sustainability will be hard to achieve.

Robbie McIlraith is the New Zealand general manager of Stellar Recruitment. [email protected]

The importance of hiring standards

Martz Witty, head of the Martz Group, aligning chartered accountancy with the creativity of business development. www.martz.co.nz

It’s topical… should your accounting solutions be “in the cloud?” We’re going to answer that with a… maybe.

No, that doesn’t mean we are not prepared to commit – instead we are making a stand that one size does not fit all.

Imagine for a moment you’re wearing a business “onesie”. Yes it might look cute, yes, it might be functional – but is it right for you long term? Maybe!

A study from the Ministry of Economic Development in September 2011 showed 68.9 percent of New Zealand enterprises had zero employees, a further 20.8 percent had five or less employees… so 89.7 percent cumulatively have five or less employees.

Compliance costs can be out of hand. For the small business owner cloud accounting solutions can be just the ticket for you – especially with so many add-ons for the little idiosyncrasies that your business may have - from costings, quoting, job costing, payroll and the list goes on.

On the whole, small business owners underestimate how much cloud solutions can offer, especially when the very solution enables your outside advisers to login and work with you on a joint project; be that more clients, getting them back more often and thus increasing the transaction frequency, increasing prices and margins, or being better at your business processes. They all accumulate to building a better business.

There are a number of online solutions available and it is all a matter of finding your needs and placing the perfect solution over the top.

Herein lies part of the magic solution - you see you may not know the needs you have because it’s not uncommon to not know what you don’t know… so find someone who can help you with the basics, help you through the intermediate steps and then on to the big wide world that is self employment.

Okay, so here you are in your onesie and maybe it’s a bit tight around the middle? Are the legs a bit short? Is the collar tight? Yes it is functional – but it’s not going to get you where you need to go.

Your business adviser is just the same. Regrettably one size does not fit all. It might for a short while, but ultimately you’re going to outgrow it.

So find someone who can grow with you, as personality and ability are part of the equation. So are ability and expertise. Above all let’s remember the purpose of a business is to ‘fund’ your lifestyle and create some fun on the way. If you’re not having fun, then maybe there’s a change afoot.

Perspiration matters more than inspiration

Thomas Edison was quoted as saying “Genius is one percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration”. I am reminded of this quote as I observe elements of our tall-poppy syndrome manifesting itself again in the under performing NZ business world.

An award winning business I know quite well has started to attract some derogatory attention. These disrespectful (and sometimes vitriolic attacks) come from a place that perfectly fits the Wikipedia definition of the tall-poppy syndrome; ‘a social phenomenon in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers’.

But I can tell you the reality is somewhat different. This company started out like many other NZ SMEs; a part-time venture, operated out of the back garden by a young set of parents. As the years have rolled by and their workforce and profits have grown, all they are doing is daring to learn, daring to invest and daring to be accountable. In personal terms, they are simply daring to dream, daring to play and daring to win so they can share their successes.

Behind the scenes what people can’t (or prefer not to) see when viewing successful people, is the relentless commitment they have to realising their potential. They don’t see the 99 percent perspiration Edison applied to his one percent inspiration.

The sad thing, in respect of NZ’s productivity performance, is the company in question is not doing anything that other companies could not do.

When the owner told me about the derogatory remarks he’d received, he said it was because competitors are effectively “leaving their lunch on the table”. What he means is that the marketplace is happy to invest in mediocrity and complacency, while his company is willing to invest in continuous improvement and regular accountability. In other words, they are seizing opportunity others are passing up.

Remember, not everything that inspired Edison demonstrated genius. Most people know he failed far more times than he succeeded. Likewise, modern business is the same. The company I am talking about have had their fair share of hits, but they continue to display courage, self reliance and a determination. And like most successful people, any rewards they earn are simply a result of the 99 percent perspiration they apply to their one percent inspiration.

Be sure to remember the gravy train does not deliver without continuous effort. If you are not willing to continually perspire in the pursuit of fulfilling performance potential, don’t be surprised if someone wants to eat your lunch.

Using social media to drive customer loyalty

Suzanne Carter is a specialist for website development company Limelight Online. www.limelightonline.co.nz

Many businesses now have a social media presence whether across multiple platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest or Instagram. You can easily see those businesses who spend the time and effort required on their social media campaigns, as there is regular and relevant communication – both from the business and from those they are engaging with.

If you are not sure what you can do to increase customer loyalty on social media, here are some tips to help re-energise your efforts.

Personalise As customers we all like to feel that we matter and are special, whether we are spending $100 or $1000. It doesn’t take much for a business to show they care and in the non-digital world you would (hopefully) do this by thanking your customer for their purchase and engaging in conversation. It doesn’t make the customer feel great if no words are exchanged or they are not even looked at during the transaction.

Rewards Who doesn’t like a reward? Rewarding your fans and customers will encourage them to come back to your page. Here are some suggestions:

• Offering discounts for a limited time• Setting up competitions (that are easy to win)• Providing a discount code or a similar reward once you reach a

certain number of fans i.e. 100, 500, 1000 or when you reach the first anniversary of your business.

There are many ways in which you can show your creativity in offering rewards so do some research to find out what suits you and your business the best.

Listening and engaging Listen to what people are saying on social media about your company, your products and/or your service. They may have questions, concerns or a problem that you can easily solve. Monitor your social media activity daily and engage, respond and take any necessary action.

Build Trust Essentially do what you say you are going to do. If you are running a special offer and it has an expiry date, don’t cut it short. I knew a café that was offering free coffees all day however, at 11am they decided to stop the promotion and as you can imagine, a lot of negative feedback was posted. An example of how not to run a promotion and build loyalty!

Share your values People tend to be more loyal to a company that shares their beliefs and values. If for example, you are active in the community then you should post about what you are doing or if you are sponsoring a charity event then do what you can to promote it.

A new way of working

I recently attended an international Human Factors and Ergonomics Congress in Melbourne. One of the overwhelming themes was around sedentary work practices and the risk to our long term health.

One of the workshops was around activity based work, a relatively new concept in terms of how we design our workplaces.

This focus appears to be driven by three components: the rising cost of office space, the use of sit stand desks, and sedentary work risks (with the well researched evidence on the increase in risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers).

Activity based work design focuses on looking at three areas: behavioural aspects - when people work, are they in an office space all day or out and about some of the time, so do they need a permanent desk? Physical aspects - where people work - can they work at home part of the time, do they need to be in an office space? And virtual aspects - how people work - do they use laptops, tablets, smartphones or desktop technology?

What does activity based working actually look like? People have their own personal lockers. There are desks available for them when they are in the office, breakout rooms when they want to avoid interruptions or take phone calls in private, flexible team working areas, more traditional desk based work areas for times when team connection is needed, meeting rooms with virtual technology, kitchens for time away from the desk to eat and socialise, and private rooms for space for sensitive meetings. It can be likened to a neighbourhood-based working space, reflecting lifestyles and culture.

Effective technology systems are essentialUse of effective technology systems is essential to this way of working. Basically, the workspace needs to be almost paperless. This can be a huge challenge for some organisations, with one of the presenters recommending a three year lead time to prepare for this style of working.

Understand and explore your optionsOf course, this approach is not for everyone. Issues that arise are privacy, space ownership/territoriality, identity and personalisation, equipment/resource availability and noise.

Is it for you?Activity-based working is certainly a different way of working and it does lend itself to more collaboration over a wider number of staff within an organisation.

Looking at the systems of your organisation as well as the type of work performed and the people who work for you - this is going to give you a much better long term result, whichever way you choose to work.

LOOKING AT GROWING YOUR BUSINESS?

www.aucklandtoday.net.nz   October 2015 | 9

News | Q&A

As the Start-Up Activator for Ministry of Awesome (the “enablers” who “connect awesome ideas with the resources to turn them into reality”), Catarina Gutierrez is the friendly face that will help people get their business ideas off the ground and running in the right direction.

I caught up with her to talk about start-ups and what you need to know.1. What are the most important things people should consider before launching a start-up?

I think the most important thing for a start-up to know beforehand is to make sure that they’re actually addressing a problem that exists. I think a lot of people have these ideas that they just want to make a product that looks really cool, or software that does something really neat, but if it doesn’t address a problem in the market, then it’s not worth wasting any time and money on.

2. What are some common misconceptions about starting up on your own?

One of the most common ones I see is that it’s really expensive. I personally believe that it’s only expensive if you’re not prepared. If you haven’t done the research and validated the idea, then that’s where it gets expensive.

I think one of the important things is that if you start small, you can actually afford something relatively cheap and can self fund. For example, a website goes a long way and social media, when managed properly, can help market your idea or business.

3. What are the main challenges that start-ups face in New Zealand right now?

I think New Zealand is a relatively small market, so depending on the product or service that you offer, it can be relatively small if you’re just looking to help those in Canterbury or offering something to a specific region.

Thinking outside of the box and thinking outside of the country would be really advantageous of a start-up… that doesn’t mean you need to go overseas right away, but I think dreaming big is a really good thing.

4. Finance: where do people even begin?

I believe that to finance your own start-up you have to be very scrappy, which means not quitting your full time or part time job just because you have this passionate idea that you want to get off the ground. It means putting in the work outside of your normal working hours,

and using funding or any extra savings that you have from that work to do the other stuff that you’re passionate about.

Other funding can come in the form of small business loans. For example, there are a lot of people and trusts out there willing to give money to small businesses under the $5,000 or $1,000 range which can be really helpful, especially if you don’t want to invest thousands of dollars of your own money straight away. I think it’s also important to know that it doesn’t take a huge amount of money to build a website or to get business cards out there, and these things go a long way.

5. Do you believe that timing is everything for start-ups? If so, how do you know when ‘the time is right’?

I think timing is a part of it but I don’t think it’s everything. You will probably get to know your market very well in the process, so it’s really important to know when they are ready because what you’re doing is for the benefit of them.

Timing is also important as far as not rushing things just to be out in the market goes, which is

a mistake that I’ve made before with one of my own start-ups. I thought I had to push it out into the market before I was ready because I wanted to beat my competition, but it turned out my market wasn’t ready for the product that I was selling.

6. What would you say to people who have doubts about their ideas?

I think the more people you talk to, the more comfortable you get exposing your idea to other people. Doing this will also gain you a lot of feedback which is definitely something worth taking into consideration. I think you need to test your idea or your product as soon as possible, that way you’ll know if it’s something worth pursuing or not.

7. What are the biggest mistakes common to start-ups?

One of the biggest mistakes I see a lot is people telling their customers about what they do and not really engaging in a conversation or a community; talking at the customer instead of with them.

You get so passionate about your idea or your start-up but you’re not really engaging in meaningful conversations with your customers, so you come off as someone who is just advertising to them. One way to avoid this is to be talking to your customers about what you’re doing and why that benefits them, i.e. give it some context.

8. What attributes do successful start-ups seem to have in common?

They’re fearless, they’re willing to put in hard work and long hours for something that they’re passionate about, and they never get comfortable in one place.

It’s easy for people to fall into the trap of saying ‘I have a life that I’m comfortable with and I have this salary that helps me pay these

bills’, but I think really good entrepreneurs are uncomfortable in comfortable situations – they’re willing to disrupt their lives and take chances.

I also think that good entrepreneurs know how to use their resources and people around them effectively, so whether that’s delegating some work to a team member, or knowing where a mentor can help them. As an entrepreneur you’re going to get a million different opinions from a million different people telling you to go right and then go left and you have to know how to use that advice really well or to say, ‘Thank you for your advice, but I’m going this way’.

9. How did MoA itself start-up? Are there any learnings there we can pass on to readers?

It started out with four board members who noticed that there was a need for people to be re-engaged with the city, so we started with the co-working space above the CBD bar to get more people collaborating together and working around each other.

One of the things that we’ve learned along the way is that it takes patience; as much as you want to go out and get everything done, you have to know when to wait for things. We have also learned how to harness strong partnerships and relationships with people – those take a lot of patience to build.

The other thing we do here is we test things very often. One of the new things we’re going to try is something called the ‘Fail Club’ where everybody gets together and talks about failures that they’ve learned in business and how we can all learn from that. We’re going to do it during one of our Coffee & Jams in September.

Eugene de Villiers provides some tips for fishing in a small pond: how to snare the catch of the day and most importantly, ensuring it doesn’t get away. What advice do you have for business owners who are new to recruiting staff?

You need to be very specific on the profile you are looking for. The more specific you are the more successful your recruiting drives will be. In our organisation we give the heaviest weighting to cultural fit.

You can train people in the technical skills required, but no matter how technically capable staff are, if they are not passionate about customer service and going the extra mile, they are simply not going to fit our particular DNA.

Don’t rush is one of the best pieces of advice I have ever been given. Don’t be tempted to employ someone because they almost fit the bill, as every time I have done that I have lived to regret it. Sometimes the perfect candidate doesn’t appear immediately, but the cost of employing someone who is not a perfect match is far more than a few months of patience.

How do you know if a candidate will be a good fit for your organisation’s culture?New Zealand is a small place and asking referees the right questions is crucial to matching a candidate's profile to your organisation.

Because we have refined our profile we can significantly reduce the chances of a bad hire. I also follow my own intuition (built up over many years), and nine times out of 10 I am right. Another measure I use is whether the candidate would be a good fit with our customer base. Might sound basic, but is so often overlooked.

Is it difficult to keep good staff? How do you make them happy?Like most business owners, I have learned from trial and error. One of my biggest learnings is that contrary to what many others might say – paying the big dollars doesn’t ensure staff will stay.

Retaining good staff is about customising their remuneration package. For example we have a number of working mothers in our team and so for them flexibility of hours is paramount.

Staff engagement is also very important. We regularly poll our staff on what makes them

Fishing in a small pond

happy to come to work and we know that celebrating milestones is on the happy list. So we regularly have a morning tea or decorate a staff member’s desk with balloons and streamers to celebrate both personal and professional successes.

We also have a shared lunch once a week where teams are nominated to prepare the meal, phones are turned off and we enjoy each other’s company without distraction. Whilst the days of Friday afternoon drinks have been toned down in terms of alcohol consumption, we encourage all team members to knock off early on a Friday and enjoy some friendly rivalry over the Foosball table. All of these things are low cost but high impact.

Poaching - what can you do to minimise this?In the same way that the incentive programmes we design for our clients are bespoke, we take those principals and practice what we preach internally.

By listening to what is important to our staff then we can reward them accordingly, be it with flexible working hours, staff development opportunities or other meaningful incentives.

Because we believe that our staff are at the top of their game, then chances are our competitors will think so too and so it is inevitable that they may be approached to jump ship.

Employers who simply motivate their staff by dollars are far more vulnerable to poaching, as

competitors simply up the anti by a few dollars. It is a great deal harder for competitors to replicate meaningful staff incentive programmes.

When you do lose a valued team member, do you have any tips for employers to ensure this doesn’t de motivate the rest of the team?My number one rule is never ever talk negatively about a departing staff member, regardless of whether you can’t wait to see the back of them. Every time we lose a staff member we use this as an opportunity to re-evaluate our team strengths and weaknesses, and to reassess our capabilities. This may influence the profile of our next desired candidate.

From the moment we are born we enter a routine: eat, sleep, wash, repeat. As time goes on these routines adapt, but even though ‘routine’ itself becomes almost instinct-like, our productivity can still suffer.

Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your time in the office or wherever you call ‘work’. 1. Allocated timeYou may find that breaking up your day into time slots helps you define a purpose for each portion and therefore pushes you to complete the task at hand. This can be done through either separating out your mornings and afternoons for different kinds of work or allocating each hour to something specific. Whatever you do, plan your day first thing in the morning so you know exactly how your day should go.

2. Short breaksThe Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that teaches you to “work with time, not against it”. By using a timer (usually one shaped like a tomato, hence the name ‘pomodoro’), the technique teaches you to break down work into blocks, usually by 25 minutes at a time, with each being separated by small breaks. The idea is to avoid burnout by working for too long, eliminate distractions by giving yourself the short breaks and to create a better work/life balance by enhancing your productivity at work.

ways to structure your dayBy Terri Cluckie10

3. Comfort is keyThis might sound a little strange, but nothing makes me feel more empowered than a fresh pair of socks. Why? Because they bring me comfort, keep me warm and if my feet are comfortable on the ground, then so is the rest of my body. With this in mind, I also feel the most confident when I’m wearing clothes that make me feel good. Some jobs have strict dress codes, but if you can find a way to adapt your outfit to something a little more ‘you’, then you might feel more at ease and therefore more productive.

4. Treat yourself (read: bribe yourself)

For some people, simply getting through tasks and crossing things off your list isn’t satisfactory enough when powering through work - sometimes we need a little bit more. If you can afford to, consider treating yourself at the end of the day, or week, or even per task. It doesn’t need to be anything huge. If bribery is what gets you through the day then so be it.

5. The power of ‘no’ Sometimes a heavy work load just comes with the job, but even so, you should really look into what is piling up and decide if that’s really your job or not. If you can delegate, do so, and if assignments or tasks keep coming your way that you probably won’t get on to, or perhaps you think someone else would do a better job of, then say so. The power of ‘no’ can sometimes be bigger than the power of ‘yes’.

6. No time to wasteArguments over a four day work week have had a neat little place on business blogs and news reports for years now, but despite the well-put reasoning around “less time equals more productivity,” they haven’t quite caught on yet. There are certain sectors that these conditions work really well for, but unfortunately not for all. However that doesn’t mean that you can’t adopt the idea behind it to work for yourself. It’s pretty straightforward to understand that the less time you have, the less you will

waste, so give yourself shorter time slots to do each task and you might find yourself speeding up and knocking jobs out the door.

7. Set the sceneA little technique that some chefs use to organise their stations before getting to work is called “mise en place”, or “putting in place”. By laying out your “tools” for the job before you start sets you up for success as everything you need is to hand, saving time and clearing mental fuzz.

8. A visible planHaving a visual aid for the work you have ahead of you not only kicks your butt into getting things done as it stares you in the face, but it also acts as a clear guideline of everything you need to do. Just like various studying techniques, drawing out a list of tasks helps clear your mind as you can focus on one thing at a time without trying to remember everything else.

9. Concentrate on the task at hand

We all have various ways of working, but jumping from one task to another without completion can create mental fuzz and stagnate our work. Focus your energy on one task at a time and you might find it helps you get through things quicker.

10. Start small

I find that easing myself into the day by focussing on smaller tasks first means that I have a very productive day. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, I don’t have to worry about small housework tasks in between my bigger bits of work – this takes away distractions and means I can be as efficient with my time as possible. Secondly, if I get to work on easier tasks first, it means I don’t spend any time thinking about how large or daunting my next tasks will be – it’s psychological really.

Our daily routine largely shapes our performance, productivity and the accomplishments we make. So logically we want to incorporate a routine into our lives that delivers the best results.

While there isn’t one routine that is guaranteed to generate a successful career, some of history’s most influential people centred their working day on very unique patterns, which arguably helped spur on their achievements.

Here is how some of the world’s most successful people spent their 24 hours. Perhaps they’ll inspire you to shake up your daily routine for the better:

Winston ChurchillWhen you think of a prime minister’s daily schedule some of the words that come to mind may be hectic, regimented and tiresome. Chances are leisurely doesn’t feature on the list, but a leisurely start to the morning was a predominant aspect of Winston Churchill’s day.

The Prime Minister of Great Britain woke at 7:30am and lay in bed for the majority of the morning. He enjoyed breakfast in bed and then read his mail, the national newspapers and dictated letters to his secretaries. At 11am he’d rise for the day, bath and take a leisurely stroll in the garden.

His walk was followed by lunch with family and guests. The full three course meal was served at 1pm, which he’d enjoy while socialising well into the afternoon. At 3:30pm lunch was concluded and Winston would retire to his office to work. He’d work for a little over an hour before taking a nap around 5pm, an important part of his routine. Dinner was at 8pm, again enjoyed with family and friends, followed by another hour of work before bed.

Barack ObamaIf anyone needs a solid routine to help them fit everything into 24 hours it’s the President of the United States. And it seems Barack Obama

The patterns of highly successful people By Laura Baker

has a well organised routine that not only allows him to spend time with his family, but also run a country.

At 7am he wakes and heads straight to the White House gym to exercise for an hour. Then he eats breakfast, which has been chosen for him, with his wife and daughters. He reads the newspapers and hits the Oval Office around 9am.

In the evening he makes a point of eating dinner with his family before returning to work. Among his nightly responsibilities is leafing through the binder of documents that his staff have asked him to review.

Once Michelle goes to bed at 10pm he enjoys some alone time. He watches ESPN, surfs his iPad, reads books, and calls foreign leaders in different time zones, until he finally goes to bed around 1am.

Jack DorseyCo-founder of Twitter and CEO of Square, Jack Dorsey, has a hectic work schedule. He runs two businesses full time putting in a mammoth 16 hour work day, split evenly between eight hours at each business.

He manages to juggle working full time for two companies simultaneously with the help of a very disciplined routine. He themes his working days to stay focused and productive. On Monday at both companies he focuses on management, Tuesday is product development, Wednesday is marketing, communication and growth, Thursday is focused on developers and partnerships, and Friday is culture and recruiting. Jack takes Saturdays off to hike and Sundays are spent on reflection, feedback and getting ready for the rest of the week.

He lives across the street from his office to eliminate commute time and make the most of every hour in the day.

Charles Darwin One of the world’s best known naturalists and geologists, Charles Darwin, made a number of significant contributions to science, which impacted the way we think about the world.

His highly innovative work brought about a very dynamic routine filled with exercise and rest. He’d wake at 7am and begin the day with a short walk followed by a solitary breakfast. He began his work day at 8am and stayed extremely focussed, interrupted only by the occasional visit to the snuff jar.

At midday he would head out for another walk with his pet terrier Polly. Charles would then eat lunch, read the newspaper, write letters and then take an afternoon nap. Late afternoon he’d get up and go on his third walk for the day.

In the evening he’d rest, while his wife, Emma read to him. For dinner they’d share tea and an egg. Once Emma had gone to bed Charles would stay up reading scientific books and lie awake in bed solving problems until midnight.

While there isn’t

one routine that is

a successful career,

LOVEBLOCK Uncorking Erica Crawford’s organic passion By Laura Baker

High on the hills overlooking Marlborough’s Awatere Valley are rows of grapevines blanketing 73 hectares of land. Among the vines are well-fed sheep contently grazing on the dandelions and weeds that freely grow among the vines in the fertile soil.

The parcel of land is peaceful, tranquil and baked in sun. From this elevation, 150 metres above the ocean below, it feels like you can see the end of the earth. The Loveblock vineyard is a little slice of heaven, at least for New Zealand wine industry power couple Erica and Kim Crawford.

Following a prolonged hiatus from what they do best, Erica and Kim are back in the game making world class wine, as an infectious love for the craft meant these two wouldn’t stay away forever.

From infancy to fameYou’ve probably heard of the wine label Kim Crawford, you may have even enjoyed a drop or two.

Loveblock Wines CEO, Erica Crawford was the marketing mogul behind the Kim Crawford brand which shot it and the New Zealand wine industry from infancy to fame within a few short years. Her husband Kim, the namesake for it, is the highly esteemed vintner who produced the product.

Originally from South Africa, Erica started her career as a young scientist in cardiac medicine. But when the opportunity arose to make a wine label with her husband she changed tact.

With a couple of marketing courses under her belt, a large portion of self taught exporting and marketing skills, and a heavy reliance on instinct, they went into business.

Unable to afford land and vineyards of their own back in 1996 didn’t hold Erica back. Her resilient and forthright nature saw her revolutionise the wine production model in New Zealand. They bought fruit from contract growers and set up a ‘virtual winery’, a model that hadn’t previously been successful in New Zealand. Under Erica’s management they pumped out wine on mass, exporting 400,000 cases annually at its peak.

They sold the brand just seven years later for an extremely handsome sum. Erica says the buyout couldn’t have come at a better time. “We got to a point in our growth where we couldn’t fund ourselves anymore. We would have had to go to an IPO [initial public offering], take on more shareholders or sell, and so we sold.” And she says put simply, “it was an offer that we couldn’t refuse”.

Today Kim Crawford Wines, owned by US company Constellation Wines, is massive. It produces more than a million cases annually and is the biggest selling sauvignon blanc in America and Canada. “The new owners are doing a good job. It is doing fantastically well,” she says.

Back in the game After selling their stake in the business the Crawfords fell off the radar for a few years, quietly investing money in smaller New Zealand

businesses. But when the global financial crisis hit they had to roll up their sleeves and plan their next move.

Returning to the industry wasn’t a hard decision to make. “It is the industry we both love - Kim is a winemaker and it’s his passion.”

But this time around they have taken a totally different approach, having money, experience and a certain clout in the industry has influenced this, but Erica’s new philosophy and approach to wine making has had the biggest impact.

Loveblock is certified organic, made in small quantities, boutique and at a premium price point - everything that the old brand was not. But perhaps the biggest difference is that they now own land, something they never had with Kim Crawford Wines. They are responsible for their two vineyards, Loveblock and Someone’s Darling in Central Otago and it’s a responsibility they take very seriously.

From the humble posy of weeds and dandelions which adorn the label, to the much loved and tended certified organic vines at the heart of the operation, everything about this new brand is different. “Earthy, mother, and honest,” Erica says Loveblock is a direct contrast to the former sleek, urban brand of bygone times.

Despite being an industry leader, the launch of Loveblock didn’t come without a few pre-launch jitters. Erica says both Kim and her were most definitely nervous, largely because the wine style is so different to what they did before. “We were very nervous to see what sort of reception we were going to receive.” But those nerves were quickly quelled when Loveblock’s five varieties were picked up for distribution by an American distributor, Terlato Wines.

“The first thing we did before we even made a drop of wine was find a distribution partner to work with. It took us about three years, but we eventually found the right one and it’s going really well.”

Working with the Italian family business means they are capable of exporting into the US market, which is typically tough to enter due to its complicated regulations. The first wines were launched in the US in April 2013 and the New Zealand launch followed a couple of months later.

In this calendar year to date it has exported about 18,000 cases of wines, 90 percent of which to the US, their biggest customer. Smaller volumes are also sent to Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

She aims to make Loveblock more widely available in New Zealand, but with more than 700 brands on the New Zealand market, they are up against extremely stiff competition. A lot of the bigger players with large marketing budgets

dominate supermarkets shelves, leaving smaller brands to clamber for space.

Despite the challenges to take a bigger stake in the local market Loveblock is on the up and up. Now two and a half years into business the fruits of their labour are beginning to show. “We are actually ahead of what can ordinarily be expected from a small winery. I think our success is down to our previous relationships. We had three states in America that took direct imports, rather than being channelled through California and that doesn’t just happen.”

Live your values Erica says when they first entered the industry almost 20 years ago the market was young. “We had to explain where New Zealand is to every offshore person we dealt with, so it had a pioneering feel about it.” That pioneering feel is nothing more than a distant memory in today’s glutted market, but Erica and Kim are still managing to make pioneering moves in the industry, just in a different way.

Loveblock Wine is certified organic by BioGro New Zealand, one of just a handful of wineries in the country to hold this title. “There is a lot of work involved in getting certified and huge commitment and labour of love.” But it was a commitment and an ethical decision Erica was confident she needed to make.

Her awareness of a green, organic lifestyle came about rather abruptly in her early thirties. Erica was in a car accident and during a medical check-up after the accident, it was discovered her heart was struggling. “The doctors said my heart was presenting like a 55 year old highly stressed businessman. The hard, fast, stressful lifestyle she was living with the new business and young family had taken its toll.

“So I had to make some changes.” Cutting out additives was the first move and looking at ingredients on packages was next - eventually she eliminated packet and tin foods altogether. She also adopted a slower, almost relaxed, approach to life. “The difference that made to my state of mind was quite amazing.”

Next Erica made the switch to natural skin care products and eco-friendly cleaning products that

It was a logical transition to take the natural,

organic philosophy to the vineyard. It’s an

opportunity to ‘live your values’ for me.

have fewer chemicals in them. “You may have to scrub a bit harder, but you also lose a few extra calories at the same time!

“It was a logical transition to take the natural, organic philosophy to the vineyard. It’s an opportunity to ‘live your values’ for me.”

It may have been a “logical transition,” but getting certified has come with its challenges. Running an organic vineyard implies that no chemical fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides have been used. “That makes you a lot more vulnerable to pests and disease and we have certainly felt the effect of that.”

Loveblock uses a holistic system seeking co-operation with nature and relies on an understanding of the ecological processes to achieve rich, robust soil and plants. It incorporates methods that are centuries old, such as composting to promote biodiversity, a resident population of beneficial insects to control pests and sheep and cows are used to nibble the weeds under the vines.

Since converting the vineyard to organic in 2008, Erica says she has noticed an increase of awareness among other wineries and grape growers around organic practises. “There is a change coming about, we’ve seen grape growers reduce the amount of chemical input, moving away from the traditional full chemical method. People are beginning to get it and low impact growing is gaining momentum.

“I think there is also a ground swell from consumers as they become more interested in where their products are coming from and how they are made.”

The pinnacle of Erica’s career was the sale of Kim Crawford Wines and she says she is happy to leave it that way. Rather than looking to top her past accomplishment Erica is finding career success in quality not quantity.

“We certainly don’t want to grow into a big brand again,” she says.

“This time we decided we are only going to produce wine from the estate to maintain the quality. Our estate can produce some 60,000 cases, unless we buy more land, so that’s where we’ll cap it.”

The Auckland company, which has recently gained ISO9001 accreditation, moved to a new location in Lorien Place, East Tamaki, in March and director Julie Light says the new site and accreditation are allowing for significant expansion.

R&H Engineering is a general engineering business with the ability to design and produce a wide range of engineering projects on time and budget. It is owned and operated by the Light family, including Julie’s sons Simon, the factory manager, Tim, an estimator and her husband John who looks after maintenance.

The company’s capabilities include supply, manufacture, maintenance, fabrication, precision machining and draughting.

R&H Engineering works closely with a range of suppliers, including Handrail Fittings, Plate Solutions, Crane and Cartage, and Powderworks.

Accreditation proves qualityJulie says gaining the ISO9001 accreditation shows existing customers that R&H has the capacity to undertake large jobs and has procedures and systems in place for quality assurance.

“For new customers it shows that we’re a decent engineering company that is well set up and worthy of doing business with. We now have the option of doing work overseas too and won’t have to limit ourselves.”

R&H Engineering is experiencing a period of growth and has a lot of work on its books, including a number of toilet blocks for Auckland City parks and reserves, truck decks for Recreational Services, together with a host of regular customers.

Coming up it has apartment block and warehouse renovations, structural steel and metal works, with some being outside Auckland.

Expansion of servicesThe company’s growth during the past year prompted it to move to a large new site in East Tamaki in March.

Julie says a new five tonne gantry crane will be installed in the new premises within the next few weeks, which will enable the company to take on a larger variety of steel works.

“Our new premises is three times bigger than the old one. We’re growing and setting ourselves up as a serious engineering company.” AT

PROUDLY SUPPORTING GRAHAM’S FUNERAL SERVICES

FOR OVER 40 YEARS.

Freedom Software Limited has provided funeral software to Grahams Funeral Services for over 10 years. In this time we have had the pleasure of interacting with Mark and his team in Tuakau on many occasions both in person and over the phone. We have always enjoyed dealing with Grahams Funeral Services and have seen many of the changes Mark has made to improve both his facilities and the services they provide. The Tuakau, Pukekohe and Waiuku communities are very fortunate to have a firm that care so much for people in their time of grief.Graham’s Funeral Services Chapel’s underwent a refurbishment in recent times and the results are superb. The central location, air conditioning, large TV monitors and projector make this facility among the best in the country.I know that Mark and his team have worked hard to provide this and it has not been without much personal sacrifice and risk. Mark and his team are called to assist families at any hour of the day or night and they have always made themselves available to do this - even it it means leaving their own family occasions. It is not easy being a funeral director but Mark Graham and his dedicated team make it look like it is.

Well done team. We wish you all the best for your 80th Anniversary.Alan Eddy - Director of Freedom Software Limited

BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS

They say the journey is more important than the destination and, while Grahams Funeral Services is celebrating 80 years in business this year, the real story is how they got there.

Celebrating eight decades of service

Local cabinetmaker Percy Graham operated Tuakau Cabinetworks, located opposite the railways and livery stables for those travelling to Auckland for the day to park their horses and carts. “As a cabinetmaker, he was asked to make a casket and before long the orders for caskets were rolling in,” Percy’s grandson Mark Graham explains.

“With access to horses and carts, all of a sudden he became an undertaker and the business became known as Tuakau Cabinetworks and Undertakers.”

It’s an unconventional start to the funeral business, but then it was equally as successful as it was unusual.

What’s even more so is that the cabinet making business has evolved into timber and hardware company Tuakau ITM Group run by Mark’s cousin Glenn, a third generation Graham, while Mark – also a third generation Graham – continues to operate Grahams Funeral Services.

“We’re proud to have been able to provide that service for that length of time,” Mark says. “Both businesses are still going strong after 80 years.”

While the fourth generation of the Graham family are now working within the company,

“We’ve adapted and evolved with these changes, becoming event managers to a degree and, in a very caring and professional way, we help people take the first step through the early stages of that grieving process, helping them on a healthy, positive pathway so that, in time, they will be able to move on.”

Another key area of change is the rapid rise in cremation, with some choosing not to hold

a service at all and, although a no service cremation is an option via Grahams Funeral Services, Mark believes the service itself plays an integral role in the grieving process. “Funerals are not just about those who have passed, but also for the living,” he says.

“There is a lot of value in having a funeral and it’s nice to have that opportunity to celebrate one’s life.”

this particular year is significant, with three generations still actively involved at the same time –Mark’s mother Lynne Graham and his son Jared Graham.

While Grahams Funeral Services is still going strong after 80 years, they are no longer undertakers. “We are now funeral directors,” Mark explains.

“Today it’s about assisting people to celebrate a loved one’s life. Although it’s often not as formal as it used to be, people have different ways to farewell their loved ones now, whether it’s a contemporary style, a traditional church or chapel service, or even conducted on a private property, a public park or a beach – funerals are celebrated in a variety of ways these days.

There is a lot of value

in having a funeral and

it’s nice to have that

opportunity to celebrate

one’s life.

Focus | Grahams Funeral Services

With many services happening outside of traditional churches and chapels, technology is playing an increasing role in the modern funeral and above and beyond the traditional audio visual capabilities, Grahams Funeral Services now offers full web casting so friends and family can watch a service live or in delayed time.

Today Grahams Funeral Services provides those services across three premises at Waiuku, Pukekohe and Tuakau – the company’s historical base, which houses the main chapel, administration, mortuary facilities, and memorial and casket showrooms.

There are nine full time staff between the funeral and headstone divisions and also a catering division which can provide for after funeral gatherings. There are also a range of hearses available, from a classic 1960 Cadillac hearse – the only one of its kind in New Zealand – through to more contemporary models.

“We’re passionate about what we do and we believe we do a good job supporting the community in many ways. Our family is heavily involved in the local community outside of the company including local rotary clubs, the local museum, the Tuakau Old Settlers Group, schools, golf clubs and through local business association groups.

“We operate our business within the local community and we want to offer the same level of support back to the same community that has supported us over the years.”

A member of the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ), Grahams Funeral Services is well aware of the professional obligations involved in working with families during their grieving period. “Our staff need to be caring, empathetic people with the understanding and patience to be able to assist them through such a difficult time.”

Heading into the 80th anniversary celebrations, Grahams Funeral Services completed a significant renovation of the Tuakau chapel and memorials showroom, building a new memorials showroom and upgrading everything from the exterior cladding through to the interior spaces.

“We currently have to use the Manukau City Crematorium, which is becoming more of a challenge to get to with traffic congestion and we believe the local community deserves its own crematorium, so we have plans to establish one locally once a suitable site becomes available,” Mark says. AT

Local Auckland firm, Imake Ltd, exudes all the attributes of classic ingenuity us Kiwis like in a homegrown success story, but ironically this international exporter with a product range in the thousands and a turnover in the millions, made its name encouraging Kiwis to partake in ingenuous creations of their very own.

Making it naturally with Imake

Imake supplies ingredients, equipment and know-how for people to make their own craft beer, cider, spirits, liqueurs, cheese, yoghurt, sausages and much more, from the comfort of their own homes.

Founder Peter Eastwood began with home brewing kits in the 1980s and today Imake has more than 3,000 products which fall under a number of brands including Mad Millie, Mangrove Jack’s, and Grainfather, selling across most countries of the world.

“We got off the ground after recognising changes happening in the 80s,” Peter explains.

“I didn’t see a future in my career in textiles and wanted to try something different. Ultimately I wanted to start a business then sell it off in six months, but it has evolved so much that it has continued to be fun and successful and we’ve stuck with it. The company has become more structured as it has matured and we’ve jumped at opportunities as they have arisen.”

One of those opportunities has been exporting. “We started exporting in about 1992. I still remember the first box – it was a 600 x 40 x 30 with a $400 sale heading to Australia and I remember thinking, ‘imagine if we could do this every day’,” Peter says.

“Now we have 40 foot containers heading to Australia, South Africa, the UK, Canada and all over – it’s an amazing feeling.”

The winner of the BDO Food & Beverage Exporter of the Year Award at the Air New Zealand Cargo Auckland Export Awards for 2015, Imake exports some 80 percent of its products.

“Today our customers are purchasing $2,000-$3,000 worth of product at a time. We have a large number of customers across an equally large amount of currencies. We have a very balanced portfolio and we’re very dominant in our niche – potentially in the top 2-3 in world in that market, so we’re very successful in meeting the needs of that market.”

customer wants, identifying opportunities and constantly striving to develop the right product at the right time.

“I used to think our success was about luck,” he laughs. “But I’ve realised it’s not. We’re really good at identifying what the customer needs and meeting those needs.

“It’s not just one thing that makes a product successful, it’s got to be the right product at the right price, the right message and the right marketing.

“We’ve got a dedicated team and everyone is pushing in the same direction which is allowing us to make real inroads.”

There are some exciting things happening in the Mad Millie range, which started with cheese making products and has since expanded into sourdough bread making and ginger beer.

“These are all in the market now and proving to be great products,” Peter says. “Our new Grainfather craft beer making machine is proving a huge success and beating all of our expectations. I think it’s a case of it being the right product at the right time as the craft beer scene grows in popularity around the world.

“These products are all related to the customer’s desire to make more natural products and maintaining control over what they’re making. We’re in the entertainment space as much as the DIY space. Our products are about people having fun doing it themselves.” AT

Peter lists expansion by acquisition in the company’s top successes during the years and the company has purchased more than 10 businesses during its history. “In the home brew space there are a lot of ‘ma and pa’ businesses who want to sell up along way,” Peter says. “We’re in a position to make them good offers and that enables us to improve our business.”

Madam Woo’s new taste sensations

People on the North Shore are thrilled to have a new local and Aucklanders in general are making the trip across the bridge to try it out, packing out the restaurant almost nightly.

Madam Woo has a really broad appeal - the menu allows a lot of choice and lets people create their own Madam Woo experience, whether they are just in for a quick bite or to indulge in one of its banquet menus. It’s also a fun way to eat as dishes are designed to be shared and enjoyed together.

If you’re lucky enough to enjoy a meal at Madam Woo there are a few ‘must have’ items on the menu including the hawker rolls, which have developed a cult-like following. Some of the other popular dishes are the honey and soy squid, the beef rendang with nasi lemak and the char kuey teow, a delicious fried rice noodle dish.

All of the dishes on the menu are tried and tested. Many come from authentic family recipes passed down to the staff and are fresh and full of big flavours. AT

Hospitality | Pioneer Pie Co.

Contrary to popular belief, a good pie can be hard to come by. They may be a New Zealand staple, but real quality, cherished pies don’t come in bulk at the supermarket. The family-run pie haven in Albany, Pioneer Pie Co., has been a staple in the community since it opened its doors in 2012. Owners Tyrone and Carla Campbell, specialise in hand-crafted pies of all flavours and use only the finest ingredients.

They offer a range of dietary options such as gluten free and dairy free and source their chicken from Hawke’s Bay farm, Bostocks, and their pork from Korkers, while also using organic ingredients where possible.

The couple have three children under the age of five so are always very conscious about the food they make at home and in the café. “We want to serve to the customers only what we’d give to the kids,” Tyrone says.

The menu hosts a delectable selection making the task of choosing nigh impossible – but there are of course best sellers: the caramalised pork belly, kumara and apple, the roast chicken, mushroom and tarragon, and the classics: the mince and cheese and steak and cheese. The hand crafted free-range English recipe sausage rolls are also “real stars of the show”.

A much needed changeThe business hasn’t always been known as Pioneer Pie Co. In fact, they haven’t always specialised in pies either.

Before 2014, their premises on Dairy Flat Highway was known as Funky Chicken Café and sold breakfasts, filled rolls and pies. Although the business was a success in that customers kept coming back and enjoyed the food, supplying such a wide variety started to take its toll on Tyrone and Carla and before long they were faced with a decision: close down or find another way.

Not ones to give up so easily, the couple decided to re-focus and listen to what the customers really wanted. The pies. And so, after a much needed rebrand, Pioneer Pie Co. was formed.

It’s no real surprise though that the business is doing so well. Aside from the fact that their produce is simply unique, Tyrone has always had an entrepreneurial side. When he was 12 years old he started up his own car wash business – “a good little earner” – and kept it going until leaving school a few years later.

After finishing school with no qualifications, he studied a butchery apprenticeship, which now provides him with inspiration for his recipes. During his apprenticeship he travelled around New Zealand with a friend and vowed that he would travel even more once he had his qualifications. And so it wasn’t long until he headed across the world before landing in Europe.

While there he worked for a sports events company, an experience he brought home with him in 2008 when he set up his own business, Global Games, which runs some of New Zealand’s biggest junior sports events for children between the ages of eight and 14.

Only just the beginning With two businesses under his wing and a young family to provide for, ‘busy’ would be an understatement for Tyrone. Although Pioneer Pie Co. is doing well, he is quick to explain the hard work behind the scenes.

“On that success, we’ve kind of got to a base camp. You know, we are only just beginning the journey. What we’ve got now, for me, is only the start.”

This start though has already brought the team great success. For the past 12 months they have expanded the availability of their pies into other niche cafés – something that was purely customer driven. They also tour the country visiting various food shows and markets.

A slice of humble pie

Late last year the company took on two business partners, Gus and Siri, who have helped Tyrone and Carla stay grounded while expanding the business, they both bring different skill sets that have helped drive the business in new directions. They also hired a general manager and an operations manager who have been brought in to allow Tyrone to focus on taking the business forward, while the day to day running of the café continues to thrive.

So while expansion is already happening, Tyrone makes it clear that their roots will always be firmly planted in the ground. “We don’t want to be a big franchise and have multiple stores around the country. We just want to have maybe a couple of other stores… once we move into the mainstream, our production will lose that authenticity and also that quality to the product.”

The trajectory is pretty clear for Pioneer Pie Co. and there is no doubt it’s in good hands. Tyrone and Carla’s hopes to expand into Wellington and Christchurch are under way, and if the original café in Albany is anything to go by, we’re all in for a treat. AT

Newmarket’s finest Chinese fare Great businesses are the ones that step out of the box to do things that little bit differently. The best businesses are the ones with a good story behind them. Newmarket restaurant Pearl Garden – which is celebrating 40 years in business – has both. Back in 1975 an innovative and energetic ‘Mama Kan’ (Pauline) started what was then a small intimate restaurant with eight tables, 30 plates and 30 bowls. “When she started the business, there weren’t many Chinese restaurants around,” Pauline’s daughter in law Mabel Kan explains.

“In the early days, Chinese restaurants were all about Chop Suey. A cooking teacher from Hong Kong, she wanted to introduce a more refined cuisine to the area, with a variety of dumpling delicacies and wok inspired specialties, reminiscent of her own home cooking.”

The business, which started life in a little shop on Broadway, has seen a lot of changes over the years. “We moved into a premises around the corner from there, underneath where we are now,” Mabel says.

“There certainly weren’t the boutiques that are there today. It was a sheetmetal merchant for many years and now it’s changed significantly. Today this area is the hub of the fashion industry.”

But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed. On any given day you can still see at least three generations of Kans working in the restaurant. Pearl Garden believes the secret to success is ensuring that traditions and quality standards are maintained and today Mabel, her husband Peter, son Chris, sister in law Eileen, as well as nephews and cousins, all play roles in the business.

People were queuing at the door right from square one when Pearl Garden opened. “In those days it was difficult to source ingredients. You couldn’t get Chinese vegetables unless you grew them yourself,” she says.

Forty years ago abalone and paua weren’t considered high class items and they’re not the only items the restaurant has seen shift in popularity.

“We’ve since had a significant influx of immigrants and now we have live tanks of seafood to cater for the tastes of our Chinese customers as well as local families. People are also becoming increasingly health conscious. Tofu wasn’t very popular and yet now people can’t get enough of it. Customers are choosing healthy options and steamed fish with head on is another popular healthy option.”

San Choi Baois another popular dish with your choice of either chicken or duck. “This is a whole fresh duck which is eaten in stages,” Mabel says.

“We have stone casserole dishes which are popular with oxtail and we have some very

labour intensive steamed soups like herbal duck which are also extremely popular.”

There is also a large selection of tapas and dim sims available for both lunch and dinner.

Following Mama Kan’s foundations, Pearl Garden still uses the simple philosophy, good

wholesome food using the freshest ingredients and ensuring they are not overcooked so they maintain their nutrition.

Pearl Garden has been busy meeting the city’s needs for the recent Mid-Autumn Festival – a much loved celebration among the Chinese

around the world and with wedding season coming up it’s a popular time of year for the restaurant.

“We’re a small family business and we want to keep it that way with good quality food, great customer service, keeping it fresh by working with what’s in season and introducing ourselves to those who haven’t heard of us.” AT

Delta Technology Solutions Protecting your IT needs as they evolve

- ITC Consultant

It’s a known fact… technology and the Internet have revolutionised the way we all do business. Business systems and opportunities are now linked globally, with more and more Kiwi businesses going online to explore this frontier and expand their own services.

What’s a lesser known fact – and often overlooked until it’s too late – is that protecting these businesses and their vital data, especially while online, is an extremely complex, costly and time consuming challenge. There is a vast army of vendors, service providers, systems engineers and industry watchdogs all doing their bit to meet this ever growing demand for faster, better and more secure solutions.

Add to the mix the “Internet of Things” (IoT)… things are going to get more complex and the associated risks and potential costs to the end user increase. Many market leaders such as Google and Gartner are predicting that during the next few years, billions more new people and devices will join the online internet community looking to leverage technologies like Big Data, Cloud Computing and an endless array of online services and online devices. (Gartner – 1.9 billion devices currently online, with 9 billion predicted by 2017).

After more than 30 years in the electronic and IT services industry, Richard (Rick) Mulford, founder of Delta Technology Solutions (DELTA), knows the strain this puts on a business and the systems engineers charged with protecting this vital business realm.

In an effort to assist IT support personnel and businesses everywhere, DELTA’s

business model and mission had to be clear; we had to help an industry that was evolving at an alarming rate by providing a solution that delivers a value add proposition to all businesses, no matter what their size and location and without compromising the quality of service.

When DELTA first embarked on this mission to find the ultimate in systems management and the “magic pill” that cured all, we were like everyone else… confronted by the limitations of the tools to act on their own without someone continually managing them; and the speed at which the industry was evolving. Plus so much was still slipping past the best of products if no one was sitting there watching them 24/7 and analysing the vast array of data they offered up.

“Computers don’t stop working just because a business closes for the day. Things are happening 24/7 with a lot of malicious activity occurring afterhours,” Rick explains.

DELTA realised they had a choice - create another fantastic set of tools to meet their requirements and then compete in this space (and basically follow what everyone else was doing) - or create an Advanced Process and Analytics Framework to complement the existing range of tools and enhance them even more; therefore creating a robust and exciting new frontier and global service opportunity that complemented the industry and product vendors… thus the advance analytics framework, fondly referred to as M.O.T.H.E.R© and the delta imanager© solution series was created. Because delta imanager© isn’t a product, it can grow and evolve to meet your changing IT needs, self-managing the change and associated complexes.

There are endless examples of where delta imanager© has adapted to meet a new business initiative or requirement, such as saving lives by managing emergency nurse calls alerts while a system was down, to meeting a broad range of complex compliance requirements.

“With M.O.T.H.E.R© at your side, we’re not just limited to the traditional way of monitoring and waiting for a “product” to tell us something is wrong,” Rick says.

“We become an integral part of the support team and their processes, helping them to identify the best solution the business actually requires, rather than offering a one shoe fits all approach.” From a business perspective, DELTA removes the complexities and pain of IT systems management to maximise the results, allowing the business to get on with what it does best. Better yet, manned 24/7, 365 days a year, delta imanager© is there to keep an eye on everything, even when you’re not.

Effectively “We’re the Systems Admin that never sleeps”.

Everything is included so there are no hidden costs and it doesn’t matter how big or small a client is, they’re assured the same high quality of service and excellence. “We’ve been doing this a long time,” Rick says, “helping system engineers protect thousands of devices and business systems throughout NZ and as far afield as Europe and the US.

“We’re ready for new business with our next evolution and adventure taking us to a global audience via our global marketing and distribution partner EMTD.”

“When I saw the Delta Solution in a magazine I thought it might have some applicability and I was right. You identified time server and MTB problems on the domain server that we have previously fixed but had been undone with a Microsoft patch. This allowed us to rectify this problem very quickly. I'm really happy with the outcomes we've experienced in such a short time. It has been a good experience for myself and the Council.Anyone that does not have their own IT team would benefit from what you do, even if they only had one or two servers you would smooth out their processes and save them a lot of time.”

- City Council

“As a consultant I have used delta imanager© on one of my largest sites. It has helped to take the stress of making sure I caught every little bug and issue caused by users, it has also caught a few minor configuration issues that could have led to larger issues if it wasn’t seen to in a timely fashion. The emails from delta imanager© and subsequent follow up calls have also made managing the site a lot easier.Delta imanager© has freed me up to grow my company without the need to bring on new employees.”

It’s an exciting time in the global ICT Industry and DELTA looks forward to meeting new partners and clients that want to help them help the world by making IT Services an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

“We have used Airport Collision Specialists, exclusively for over 20 years. In that time we’ve come to expect the very best service, best job and best outcome,” says one happy customer, Don Malcolm, from Malcolm Total Logistics.

And that is exactly what you’ll receive from Airport Collision Specialists (ACS) owners, Wayne and Christine Nicol, and their team of qualified professionals. ACS operates in a very competitive marketplace, and has succeeded because it has the right mix of skill, reliability, integrity and ability to fulfil its clients’ needs.

It has been entrusted with the repairs of the Malcolm Total Logistics fleet and many other customers’ vehicles, both commercial and privately owned, predominantly for accident repairs, for a number of years.

The businesses reputation for consistent, quality repairs has earned it a loyal following of customers. “Our client base includes managed fleet companies, government departments and a large body of freight forwarder,” Christine says.

More than 90 percent of its work last year came from either repeat or referred work - an impressive feat for any business.

Wayne has worked within the airport area for 30 years and is the vice chairman of the Collision Repair Association’s Auckland committee. He is well known for his work as a crash repair, car maintenance, panel and paint and windscreen replacement specialist.

“I believe a lot of our clients return to us because Wayne is fastidious about a quality repair and both Wayne and I believe good service is very important. We run a very approachable, friendly, but professional shop.

“We have a great team of dedicated staff consisting of two repair technicians, two refinish technicians and an apprentice - in fact one of our technicians has now worked for Wayne for over 20 years,” Christine says.

An absolute commitment to ongoing training is a pivotal focus for the business. Its efforts were recognised at the Collision Repair Association's annual awards in 2013 when it was named runner up for the Commitment to Training award.

Wayne and the staff attend training courses annually with I-Car, the world leader in industry training. Christine says the training is essential with the changing design of vehicles and differing steel strengths. It has silver and bronze qualified technicians and is continually working to better this.

Keeping industry moving since 1975

Local towbar, trailer and accessories specialists Aro Bros has been operating in the Auckland market for 55 years now and while that’s quite the commercial feat, what is even more endearing about this family owned firm, is that all those years later, the company’s original products are still going strong in the marketplace.

Towbars, trailers and more

Established in 1960 by brothers Jim and Harold Aro, the appropriately named Aro Bros is a towbar specialist company which also stocks parts and accessories, offers a bespoke trailer design service and servicing and repairs for all makes of trailers.

“We still have trailers my father and uncle made in the 60s and 70s coming back for servicing and repairs required for current W.O.F Standards,” co-director Shirley Aro says.

“A lot of our business with tow bars is repeat business and for a lot of these customers, they come to us because their father used to come here. Maintaining good prices and quality workmanship are really important to us and we’ve developed a strong reputation in this area.”

In 2007 Jim’s daughter Shirley purchased the business from the family with her business partner Alex Puri, who was the workshop foreman and has worked for the company since 1985, with the pair making the move from Penrose to Onehunga in 2014 - bringing the

business back to the suburb in which it was originally established.

“We’ve moved into larger premises,” Shirley says. “This has enabled us to expand the business into other areas. While tow bars, custom made trailers and trailer repairs are still the mainstays of the company, we are now able to offer roof racks, curtain sider repairs on trucks, tow bars for motor homes, ferry hooks on vehicles travelling between the North and south Islands, and much more.

“We like to say that ‘if it needs towing, carrying or carting, we can make it happen’,” she says.

Jim Aro was still coming into the business a couple of days a week, assisting with the business he helped establish and earlier this year, he designed a new chrome tongue cover. Sadly Jim passed away in July this year however, his chrome towbar tongue cover is proving popular and is his lasting legacy.

Another new product of ARO BROS which is proving popular is a small battery charger,

known as the ‘Super mini booster’. This is an awesome unit and very popular with the car dealers, compliance centres and the panel shops.

“We have also increased our services to include floor repairs for trucks and trailers and repairs to curtain siders on trucks. We also outfit tradesman vans with floors, shelving, cargo barriers, in addition to the usual towbars and roof racks.”

Close to the Auckland International Airport and the Onehunga Mall there is plenty of parking and shops close by. Call in to AroBros and enjoy our legendary expertise and let the company take care of your towing needs.

“Our name has been around for a long time now,” Shirley says.

“So people know us in the industry as being a reputable locally owned company and we’re looking forward to the future.” AT

More than proud to have a long established

relationship with Asphalt Improvements,

Thank you.

Asphalt, tarmac, bitumen – the substance with many names and many uses can be dated back to the days of the ancient Greeks who reported that the walls of Babylon were bound with bitumen. Asphalt Improvements may not have been around for that long, but they are celebrating 36 years in business this year. Husband and wife team Mark and Michelle Wilson put their wedding plans on hold for a year in 1979 to ensure they could purchase the Asphalt Improvements business; a decision which has served the couple well.

“Yes, we did actually put our wedding off for a year, but it was in the best interests of our future,” Mark says. “We have been in business 36 years this year, and our foreman has been with us for that whole time – it is like one big family.”

The company specialises in the repair and installation of asphalt surfaces and unlike many contractors in the region, they have opted to stay a small, close-knit gang and focus on quality rather than quantity.

Transport & Motoring | Asphalt Improvements

Driveways that deliver

“We’ve been in the industry for many years and seen companies come and go. Some grow for the sake of growth but the work has to be constantly available or you come up against a speed bump – we prefer to keep tight reins on the work load and adapt with the market.”

During the past three decades Mark has worked with, and for, some of the biggest names in New Zealand contracting. He’s seen the asphalt peaks and troughs over the years too, but the experience he has gained is invaluable.

Asphalt Improvements has been a family-operated business since Mark and Michelle

took over and they’re looking to enjoy the fruits of their labour one day as the company will hopefully be passed on to their nephew.

“We’re getting to the point in our lives where we want to travel a little more, we’ve worked hard for this and it’s been a good stretch – it would be special if we could keep it in the family,” Mark says.

The Wilsons have built a solid reputation over the years and with Mark still working in a semi-hands-on role, customers can be assured they’re in experienced hands.

Whether it’s a commercial fix or a driveway, Asphalt Improvements do exactly what the company name states. And although they’ve achieved success through their own hard work and determination, they are always thankful to other businesses that support what they do, just like the ones on this page: Golden Contracting and Fulton Hogan.

Asphalt Improvements’philosophy Asphalt Improvements’ aim is “To provide every customer with a professional, well executed job causing as little inconvenience as possible”. ‘Well executed’ being key words, as the company prides itself on the attention to detail and product knowledge it possesses amongst its experienced ranks. With the demand in the Auckland residential sector on the rise, the industry is being sent into overdrive with more efficient construction solutions needed urgently. Pre-cut construction systems are nothing new, but there is one company charging ahead with them: Metrapanel System.

Metrapanel provide a panel solution which has been around for 25 years

The company, who is associated with Lifemark and Homestar, are also founding members of PrefabNZ. The current owners Andrew and Melissa Savage are the key drivers of the business

Metrapanel builds an average of 350 homes per year and supplies pre-cut construction systems throughout New Zealand to 14 licensed installers with 113 certified builders.

The system consists of BRANZ approved 36mm, 25mm and 18mm walls, floors and ceilings which are all delivered onsite with battens, insulation, trusses and fixings, ready to be constructed in one to two days (depending on the size of the project).

Their success in various towns and cities across New Zealand means they are now setting their sights on Auckland: a city that has a question they can answer.

Auckland’s need for housing According to the Auckland Council, Auckland’s population is projected to grow to between 2.2 and 2.5 million during the next 30 years. Around 400,000 additional dwellings will be required by 2040, meaning that at least 13,000 additional houses have to be built each year.

Metrapanel’s solutionPast booms have shown that when construction demand goes up, quality goes down, but with prefabrication systems, there doesn’t have to be a compromise.

A strong prefabrication sector will deliver genuine benefits for the whole of the New Zealand construction industry through a streamlined building process (so the more companies that take on these systems, the easier it gets).

Metrapanel has already proven this with three of their Platinum Installers perfecting a six week turnkey solution for an average 160-180sqm

A key component to sorting out Auckland’s housing crisis

Why choose Metrapanel?

There are many reasons to build with Metrapanel’s prefabricated system when building your house(s). These are just a few benefits:

• NZ made, owned and operated

• Proven and precise system

• 25 year proven product

• 50 year durability guarantee

• Cost effective

• 30 – 50 percent faster construction

• Design flexibility

• Durable and impact resistant

• In-built insulation

• Environmentally conscious.

house using just a team of three – with no compromise on quality. “We’re still managing to get Level 5 finishes on houses,” Melissa says.

“There are further efficiencies too like energy. We’ve had a Right House report come back that said there is a 28 percent saving on cooling and

four percent saving on heating, compared to a typical 94mm framed home.”

Although New Zealand currently has an uptake of 33 percent in prefabrication systems, with Australia sitting at just three percent, we are still perceived as being behind the times by European innovators.

Join MetrapanelTime seems to be an issue for most involved in the construction industry, not just Auckland itself.

Being time-poor makes it difficult to pick up new skills and take a minute to look for the best way forward, which is where Metrapanel can help too. They offer a training programme as part of the on-boarding process for those looking to use their system, and do so with six easy steps during a six week period.

“We hold training workshops on average four times a year. We have a Metrapanel trainer who supports new installers. They would be there on the first two stands – not with a tool belt on, but just to advise and make sure the installer is confident,” Melissa says.

And it couldn’t be easier to use the prefabricated system. “It’s just like a jigsaw really, putting A, B and C together – you don’t need to be highly skilled but you do need at least one person that knows how the fixings fit together.”

Proud to support Kitchen Inspirations

Maximising your kitchen’s potential The story of how a local company which started in a rented storage shed became a sought after award-winning kitchen design and manufacturer is an inspiring one. But with a name like Kitchen Inspirations, it’s not the only thing which is inspirational about this Buckland Road business.

Justin’s one man band has increased to a team of 12, including his wife Rebecca, as the company has gone from strength to strength and even the service range has extended to include all your cabinetry requirements, with vanities, laundries, office and wardrobe systems, garage storage, shop fit outs and even flooring.

“We’ve continued to grow over the years in line with the growth and development in the Pukekohe and Franklin areas,” Justin says.

“My wife Rebecca was a nurse until about five years ago, but she’s had to jump in and start working in the company. She’s trying her hardest to work part time,” he laughs.

Kitchen Inspirations stocks a vast range of high quality finishings and accessories that will suit most budgets. Whether you are looking to renovate or build new, the company can provide a wide range of options when it comes to your quote, so you can maximise the potential of your kitchen space.

Whether it’s a contemporary or traditional look you’re after, the design team can ensure you get the kitchen of your dreams. “We’re seeing a lot of metallic colours like copper and bronze, as well as matte colours like matte black and grey coming through in kitchen design at the moment,” lead designer Gill Flynn explains.

“White still isn’t going anywhere and this is popular particularly with the glossier finishes. Timber highlights are also a key feature we’re seeing more of, whether that’s natural timber or a melamine timber look.

“There’s a real eclectic mixture of trends coming through at the moment and it’s about working those in with your natural tastes.”

As the company celebrates 10 years in business, the Registered Master Joiner is proving you don’t have to compromise on visual appeal when it comes to getting the best kitchen to meet your needs.

“The kitchen is the hub of the house,” owner Justin Berry says.

“It’s the meeting point, it’s where everyone congregates, and it’s where families spend their time in the evenings. As a result, it needs to be practical and functional, but still look good.”

During the last 10 years, Kitchen Inspirations has been supported by a number of loyal supporters, including Engine Room, Mardeco, Blum, Melteca and Total Coatings, and the company would like to thank them for their support.

Kitchen Inspirations was recently awarded the Auckland and Northland award for Best Kitchen in the annual Master Joiner Awards for 2015 for a traditional colonial style kitchen, with a granite titanium gold benchtop, in a home in Pukekohe.

Gill is a recent award winner herself. Currently working on her Diploma in Design, she was recently awarded the BCITO Best Student for 2015 award at the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association of New Zealand (NKBA) awards.

Not surprising then that word of mouth has been key to the success of this family run business. “We’re a good size, so our customers are dealing with the same people all the way through, from design to manufacture and installation,” Justin says.

“We always use the best quality product, so nothing comes back and we give lifetime warranties. Even if we’re just doing a cupboard door out in the garage, we never compromise on that quality and that has enabled us to build a strong reputation over the years.”

Kitchen Inspirations has recently taken on new premises and will be moving at the end of the year. “This will enable us to have a showroom with about five kitchens set up and a variety of laundries, wardrobes and vanities on display, as well as our kitchen flooring range. It will also enable us to showcase a fully integrated WilliamsWarn Personal Brewery for the ultimate man cave fit out.” AT

Looking to build or renovate?

Ray Menzies founded his business Albany & Bays Glass Services Ltd some 30-odd years ago and in that time has built a solid reputation within the community for a fast and reliable service.

He has stayed humble during the years and focuses on quality above anything else. When the company eventually outgrew its original home in Ray’s garage, he shifted it to premises along the road in Browns Bay, and after 20 years has never looked back.

The company provides efficient and cost effective solutions in glass requirements, so whether you are looking to replace a window or install a glass door, they are your number one for high quality work.

Ray runs a team of three, including highly trained glass specialists. They only use the finest materials so that customers can rest assured they are getting the best quality product with the best quality skill.

By providing an extensive range of glass solutions and expert advice, the team can promise to deliver excellent service while sticking within a client’s budget. They can even provide a unique design to ensure every requirement in each project is met.

Providing a professional and dedicated service is second nature to Albany & Bays who still have many customers from when they first started out. It is perhaps their urgency to dealing with

customers’ needs that has seen them stay strong throughout the years. And not only have customers and staff members stuck around, many of the builders they work with today have been with them since the beginning too – a strong nod to the company’s culture and work ethic.

The business has kept going steady since Ray set up in the late 1970s which is an achievement in itself given the peaks and troughs the industry has seen. Ray has a real passion for his business and his staff, believing it is their dedication to their customers that has seen them last throughout the years.

“We supply the customer with good workmanship together with our focus on customer service. We take pride in what we do and customer satisfaction is of great importance,” says Ray.

Master Plumber!

Property & Construction | McDermond Plumbing

Plumbing, in some form or another, has been around for centuries – which means we’ve had a lot of time to get it right. And this is not unlike local Auckland firm McDermond Plumbing, which is this year celebrating 25 years in business. Established in 1990 by Ian McDermond, the company has since grown to service all of Auckland, from Coatesville to Waiuku. From unblocking a sink or a toilet to installing an entire bathroom, McDermond Plumbing can solve all your plumbing needs.

Whether you need some urgent repairs or have a new installation project, the professional team are skilled and knowledgeable, and can undertake domestic or commercial plumbing work with ease.

Ian began his plumbing apprenticeship in 1975, picking up his plumbing and gas fitting licence

Delivering quality service for a quarter century

five years later in 1980. For the next eight years he sailed around the world, before returning to New Zealand and working for his old boss for three years.

It was April Fool’s Day 1990 that he started the company from his grandmother’s basement, determined the business would not be an April Fool’s joke. “It was tough going, I was working six days a week and doing paperwork into the wee hours, pricing things and organising quotes,” Ian explains.

“After seven months on my own I was then in the position to employ my first staff members. I enjoyed being my own boss even though I worked all those unpaid hours.

“It was challenging – that whole dynamic of being the sales manager, the technical manager, the accounts manager and your own secretary all in one.”

Today the McDermond team has 15 staff members, including five plumbers, three gasfitters, three roofers, one drain layer and three administration staff.

During the years Ian has spent on the frontline of the industry, he has seen a number of technological changes. “Today we are dealing with so many different products that require technical expertise to install them. So we have invested in employees who are experienced with the latest technology to ensure we can repair and install all of the newest products.

“We’ve adapted as new products come on to market so consequently we are not your normal plumbers.”

It’s this depth of knowledge that sets the company apart from others in the industry. Eighty percent of its work falls under repair and maintenance, with a 50-50 split between the domestic and commercial markets.

“We have the technical ability to repair, replace, find parts and install the appropriate products for the systems.”

Covering all aspects of industry from plumbing and gas fitting, to roof ing and drainage, McDermond decided more recently to extend the offer to include carpentry and electrical service as well, making McDermond Plumbing and Gas Fitting a one stop shop.

His carpentry and electrical subcontractors “make life easier for our customers,” he says.

“They know they can get everything done with one phone call.”

One of the best parts about McDermond is that it operates 24/7, so if there’s no gas in a factory, or if the toilets start leaking in an office building, there’s no waiting around for office hours to get it repaired. AT

Ensuring timber products come up trumps

The NZTIF has been a global champion of the New Zealand timber industry for nearly a century and works tirelessly to ensure the domestic sawmilling industry continues to produce top quality and environmentally superior wood products.

Timber Quality SchemeA landmark meeting was held with the Department of Building and Housing, the Wood Processers and Manufacture's Association and the New Zealand Timber Industry Federation in 2009. It was agreed that the process of presenting structural timber to the market in a safe manner required improvement. As a result the NZTIF partnered with the WPMA to establish the Timber Quality Scheme (TQS).

The TQS provides assurances to everyone in the timber supply chain from engineers and architects, merchants, builders and consumers that timber use in building and housing meets the requirements of the branded hazard class and is safe and fit for purpose.

The TQS is recognised as a trusted means of easily identified compliance with the structural and durability requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. The scheme covers structural timber quality, in terms of physical properties (strength and stiffness), and durability.

Independent auditors are a critical part of the TQS. They audit timber production and sample and test timber to ensure that standards for physical properties and preservative treatment are being achieved. The auditors themselves are accredited to ensure that their systems and processes are compliant with the rules of the TQS.

New Zealand Timber Industry FederationEstablished in 1917 the New Zealand Timber Industry Federation has performed nearly a century of service to the New Zealand timber industry. The federation has evolved greatly over its lifespan, adapting its role with the changing times and the changes in its industry.

Some major developments and industry issues the federation has been apart of are:

• Price controls and allocation of timber were during the 1930s depression and into the war years, bearing in mind the heavy government influence in forestry at the time

• Development and promotion of export markets in the 1980 and 1990s

• Sale of the state forest assets

• Quality assurance and standards and dealing with compliance matters

• The industry, once based on indigenous timbers, is now focused on exotic timber species that are sustainably managed. AT

Piled foundation systemsThe unmatched performance of piled foundation systems and timber framed flooring was proven when it stood up to the test of the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.

Aside from the proven seismic performance, piled foundation systems deliver a number of other benefits in the form of:

• Accessible services such as cabling and plumbing – simple to install and to service or repair

• Underfloor ventilation that reduces dampness from the ground

• Protection against flooding

• Ease of building on sloping sites

• Healthy homes.

Outdoor treated timberNow that winter has come to a conclusion, many home owners’ thoughts are turning to enhancing their properties. Outdoor living and landscaping is a predominate aspect of property improvements, including decks, fencing and other landscaping.

Outdoor treated timber is an attractive material for these projects. The building material is designed to withstand conditions such as dampness and ground contact that can cause decay.

It is important for treated timber to have the correct hazard class for any given application. There are a number of levels of timber treatment (hazard classes) that will be effective in the conditions the timber will be used.

A supremely satisfying renovationA beautiful old home in Coatsville has been brought back to life by Glover Homes, which won a Supreme Award for the stunning renovation in this year’s Registered Master Builders’ House of the Year awards.Renovations don’t get much bigger or better than this large upgrade, which took Glover Homes two years to complete. The house was stripped right back to its concrete floor and rebuilt from the ground up, producing an exceptional luxury home.

Glover Homes’ owner, JD Glover says his team was thrilled to win a gold reserve award and be named local category winner and local supreme winner for the project, which was entered in the renovations over $500,000 category.

The Coatsville home features five luxurious bathrooms, a contemporary kitchen, expanded outdoor living and a stunning swimming pool. Its old fashioned country comfort feel comes from brand new barn-style accommodation, while antique highlights add rustic charm.

The beautifully equipped new kitchen, with a butler’s pantry, forms the centrepiece for an enviable open-plan family and dining room.

Superb indoor-outdoor flow connects the large lounge to extensive decking. The open plan theme is also a hallmark of the alfresco living design, with its dining space and lounge suite arranged by the fire, and louvre roofing panels to shut out undesirable weather.

Upstairs the striking glass roof captures light and warmth during the day and adds ambience at night. The media room’s highly detailed ceiling creates a contemporary, yet cosy cocoon-like feel.

Glover Homes provides a range of high-quality building services, including:

• New home building

• Eco/sustainable homes

• Quality house renovations

• Architectural house design

• Full service house building.

Producing craftsmanship workBuilding and renovating luxury homes is what the small team at Glover Homes does best.

The Auckland company specialises in building new high-end architecturally designed homes, and carrying out large, top-quality renovations.

For JD Glover, it’s all about attention to detail and quality and maintaining control of the entire process. He has been in construction for 30 years, owning his own business for the past 15, and in that time has built a reputation for building only the best.

“All our highly qualified craftsmen and Master Builders take great pleasure in creating beautiful luxury high-end homes for our clients,” JD says.

“We do all our own work, from the initial earthworks through to handover. The thing that makes us stand out is that we have a small team of guys who do everything; the guy who did the foundations will also help to finish it off at the end.

“With group housing you can get lots of different subcontractors on site, but our clients come on site and everyone knows who they are and it makes the project really enjoyable and exciting for the owners.”

The landscaping industry in New Zealand is unregulated and has probably got more than its fair share of cowboys and girls, so where do you start if you are intending to carry out any landscaping and want the peace of mind that you are engaging a professional?

Selecting the right professional for your place

The Landscape Industries Association of New Zealand, known as Landscaping New Zealand, is an association of landscaping professionals who choose to differentiate themselves from the masses and show their commitment to professional practice. As an accredited member of Landscaping New Zealand, businesses have been put through a rigorous accreditation process to allow them to use the Landscaping New Zealand brand.

The accreditation process not only accesses skill, but also business practices. These include contracts, insurance and occupational health and safety policies. Credit checks are also carried out.

Once accepted, accredited members are bound by Landscaping New Zealand’s Constitution, Code of Conduct and Environmental Policies. Landscaping New Zealand also has a complaints and disciplinary procedure that it takes very seriously.

All documents and information about accredited members in your area can be viewed on the Landscaping New Zealand website, www.lianz.org.nz

One of the most important issues is for you, the client, to feel confident and comfortable with the professionals you choose. Many accredited designers work closely with other accredited landscape construction companies, and vice versa. You will also find companies that provide full design and build services.

Now you are on track with finding the right landscaping professional for your proposed project, but where to next? The more ideas you gather, thought that you put into your wish list, what you want your new outdoor space to achieve, and how you want it to function for you, the better. Don’t get distracted by how this will be achieved, that is the designer’s job. Most designers work with a client brief, so this must be well thought through, and a professional will guide you through this process.

Be prepared to pay for professional advice, design drawings and plans appropriate for your project. Appropriate drawings will allow you to see the potential outcome and allow a contractor to accurately price your project. Also, be prepared to wait for the right professionals.

Your outdoor spaces and garden is an asset that will increase in value just like your home, and will add considerable value to your property if they are well designed, constructed and maintained. The cost of seeking professional advice and drawings is in most instances only a very small percentage of the overall cost of the project and will save on costly mistakes. Joinery plays a small, yet vital role in a home’s functioning. Whether you are replacing existing windows, upgrading your doors or selecting joinery for a new home, it is critical to choose the right joinery. That’s joinery that not only looks great, but which has been designed to cope with New Zealand’s demanding climate.

Your aluminium joinery experts

Established in 2004, SN Windows supplies high quality aluminium doors and windows to homeowners and builders.

But most importantly, the knowledgeable staff are dedicated to offering customers friendly advice and service, with their local knowledge of weather conditions and statutory requirements giving them the edge when it comes to professional advice.

The locally owned and operated independent business maintains strict technical instructions on fabrication methods to ensure standards are of the highest levels.

“Today we specialise in pretty much anything to do with aluminium joinery,” co-director Shyamal Nand explains.

“Whether that’s windows or doors for commercial or residential applications, and anything to do with aluminium, such as automatic doors, sliding doors, bi-fold doors,

windows. We can also supply almost any type of glass in a wide range of colours as well.”

Dealing in both residential and commercial work, SN Windows can meet all of your aluminium joinery needs for windows, doors, conservatories and replacement joinery, and the company specialises in high end, architectural housing, supplying premium aluminium joinery solutions for complex, upmarket homes.

With its own glass manufacturing facilities, SN Windows offers free tinted glass of any available colour with your confirmed order.

SN Windows is one of locally owned businesses who represents Omega Windows

both in New Zealand and the Pacific. “We are the fabricators of their aluminium so we assemble the components to create their individual windows,” Shyamal says.

“There are only have a few suppliers that can supply their aluminium needs and we’re probably the largest Omega supplier in the Auckland region.”

Omega offers a comprehensive range of aluminium window and door systems designed for modern living and demanding weather conditions, and has been supplying New Zealand and the Pacific Islands with aluminium window

and door solutions for more than 30 years, incorporating architectural qualities to capture uninterrupted views and provide indoor-outdoor flow.

Omega can also satisfy your commercial aluminium joinery requirements, with multiple options to suit your individual project. A team of design and technical experts is available to work together with you to meet your specific needs.

MLC supplies the company’s timber for window liners. MLC stands for Motueka Lumber Company, which is now known and recognised globally as MLC Group and has a core business of cut-to-length componentry, small end section and specialised timber mouldings.

“My father Shyam and I started the business in 2004,” Shyamal explains of the pair’s foray into the windows and doors industry. “My uncle owns a kitchen business and he was struggling to find good aluminium suppliers, so he approached us and suggested we start the business.”

Within a month the pair were considering closing up shop, but after sticking to their guns and carrying on, the team of two began to grow, becoming a team of four and then soon after, a team of six. Now the company has more than 25 people.

“We’re pretty pleased we didn’t follow through and close down,” he laughs.

“We’re looking to open another branch in Hamilton next year, as the market is extending out beyond the Auckland district now,” Shyamal Nand says.

“It’s been a great 11 years in the industry and we’re looking forward to many more.” AT

Your gardening expertsLooking to transform your garden? With two impressive sites each spanning more than two acres, you’ll find a treasure trove of garden and landscaping supplies at Plantarama. Auckland’s largest garden centre, Plantarama, is devoted to growing a variety of plants, flowers and fruits which are healthy and strong. Peter has been growing plants for more than 40 years. He opened Plantarama, located at the Massey site, in 1987 and the Papakura store was a welcome addition 14 years ago.

Radiant Central Heating is New Zealand’s longest-standing supplier of radiant

floor and panel heating products.

Property & Construction | Collins Plumbing, Gas and Heating

With a new hydronic heating system from Collins Plumbing, Gas and Heating, you won’t even realise your home is being heated – there’s no draft, noise or dust.

We focus our energy into saving yours

The Aquatherm black system for ceilings and walls is not only silent and easy to run, it is also economical.

It consists of Aquatherm pipe grids in panels that are installed within the wall or ceiling cavity. They are then heated or cooled with a Bosch heat pump, one of the most energy efficient heat pumps on the market.

Collins Plumbing, Gas and Heating is focused on eco-design and calculation of hydronic heating systems according to one of the most advanced standards in the world and is able to show you the running costs and savings prior to having the system installed.

The Aquatherm black system uses heated/cooled water, which travels around pipes that are embedded in the walls or ceiling of the dwelling. This heat then radiates out into the space to be heated. It is the most economical way to heat a home, when calculated, designed and installed correctly.

It should not be confused with electrical underfloor heating, which is cheaper to install but has higher running costs.

The Aquatherm panels can be installed in new walls and ceilings or retrofitted later on for heating and cooling.

Before installing the system, Collins Plumbing and Gas’s master heating engineer will carry out a complete heating calculation for your home, so you will know the exact amount of kilowatts needed to heat each room. This number is unique to every individual and ensures the whole system delivers the right amount of warmth for the space.

The experienced Collins team will then marry this with the correctly sized, energy efficient Bosch air-to-water heat pump unit that generates the hot water for your heating and potable hot water use as well as cooling in summer.

The end product is a truly energy efficient future-proofed, integrated potable hot water and hydronic heating/cooling package with the best products available.

However, if you do not wish to change floors, walls, or ceilings, Collins Plumbing and Gas also offers a range of radiator and ducted heating/cooling air systems. These systems are designed for your home and are coupled with an energy efficient heating unit to give outstanding performance in running costs. AT

Property & Construction | On Call Cranes

Lifts in tight city spacesMoving building material and household furniture into high-rise apartments or hard to access homes can be a big job and feel impossible. But with On Call Cranes’ fleet of mini-cranes the job is light work. The Auckland-wide business has one of the largest fleets of city cranes. These unique city cranes boast an incredibly large capability for their compact size. They are built for working in tight, narrow spaces - ideal for residential and light commercial jobs.

If you need to lift air conditioning units, install structural steel, repair signs or lift spa pools, pianos, fridges and more it has a crane for the job at a very competitive rate.

The majority of the crane hire businesses in the city offer large cranes, suited to big commercial construction. But On Call Cranes are one of the few businesses to specialise in small crane hire.

On Call Cranes owner operator, Paul Berrington says he identified the niche in the market several years ago and has since worked to monopolize on it. “A lot of the crane businesses are going big, but we are focusing on going small.

“We changed the direction of the company two years ago and the largest crane we now run is an 80 tonne all terrain crane; tiny in comparison to our old cranes.”

Paul may have made a new development in his business, but he is an old hand in the industry. He proudly explains he has worked an impressive 45 years in the crane hire industry, including time spent working overseas. He opened the business in 1999 and plans to pass his trade and business down to his son, Michael one day.

Cranes for every job“We have a wide range of all terrain cranes from the three tonne spider crane up to 80 tonne all terrain units. They are all well maintained and fully equipped with all the appropriate lifting gear.

“We have 10, 12 and 16 tonne mini ruffy cranes which are ideal to get in around housing projects because they are four-wheel steer, four-wheel drive and very manoeuvrable.”

On Call Cranes also supplies man cages, spreader bars, radios, soft strops, swamp pads, rigging and load transportation.

The cranes may be small, but Paul says they shouldn’t be underestimated. “Their versatility is second to none. These small machines have big reaches; essential for the many confined spaces around Auckland.

“The trouble is these days the stairways are so tight in many houses and apartments, people can’t get furniture in, the stairways are too narrow.”

To ensure its customer are getting the right crane for their needs On Call Cranes will send a reliable and experienced representative to view the job and advise you on the most appropriate crane, equipment, and expertise. All of its cranes come with a certified operator and riggers, if required.

Property & Construction | K2 Builders

An award winning Waiheke masterpiece K2 Builders Limited has been building beautiful homes on Waiheke Island for 16 years and recently won a host of Auckland Registered Master Builders’ House of the Year awards for a luxury home.

The company won a gold award, a gold reserve award, a local craftsmanship award, and was named a local category winner and a local supreme winner for the stunning home, which sits on the exposed north-sloping coastal headland of Waiheke Island.

Company owner, Kevin O’Grady says his small team was surprised and honoured to receive such high recognition from the Master Builders’ Association, particularly for his company’s first entry into the awards.

The home, which was designed by architect Christian Anderson, was entered in the Westpac New Homes over $2 million category and is positioned on its site for dramatic views, superior solar gain and shelter from prevailing winds.

The home’s stunning structures are connected via a central axis gallery, with a choice of outdoor living areas, depending on the weather. A low concrete wall to the northwest provides a level grassed area while also aiding protection from the ever-changing climate.

North-facing bedrooms, bathrooms and the expansive living space enjoy the benefits of all-day sun. The garage, utilities and den are nestled strategically to the south-west.

A robust, high quality material palette promises to endure in the exposed coastal conditions. Corrugated aluminium roofing, stained cedar siding, double-glazed aluminium joinery and exposed honed concrete paving, allow the home to live in harmony with the dramatic landscape.

Naturally weathered hardwood timbers, posts, beams and trusses form a strong structural and aesthetic thread throughout this exceptional home.

While K2 Builders doesn’t just do high-end architectural builds, Kevin says he thrives on those projects and is committed to producing only high-quality work.

Your store design says a lot about you and your business and it’s your customers’ first impression of your brand. To make a good first impression make sure your shop stands out from the crowd.

Arch Construction make it their responsibly to set its clients apart with inspired, creative design, build and furnishing of shop and offices workspaces.

Impressing customers and creating a strong brand image is the driving motivation at Arch Construction. Founding director, Vaughan Morris, and his close-knit team love working with commercial businesses to design and build shop fit-outs as well as office fit-outs.

Since establishing the business in 2004 it has become increasingly focussed on its core service, shop fitting, and are now the experts dealing with more and more corporate companies as it’s grown.

The team at Arch Construction work closely with the client from the start to finish. It begins by supplying an investigation report for the site, identifying potential and real building problems that may impact the work. This can be a real time and money saver.

Next they take sight measurements and draft plans based on the client’s vision. “We draw up the proposed ideas to scale, so the client can envision the design and have confidence with it,” Vaughan says.

Half the battle with commercial building projects is the paper work, but Arch Construction takes the hassle out. It can organise and complete all of the necessary documentation for Building Consents and at the end you’ll receive a Code of Compliance (COC), a certificate of completion that is to be issued by your local council.

High profile clientele The experienced team of Licensed Building Practitioners have created pop-up shops in many service stations, food courts, shopping

centres and hospitality businesses, throughout Auckland and the greater North Island.

It has worked with a number of major high profile customers, including Subway since 2005. It has also worked alongside Pie Face, a popular Australian brand, when it launched in New Zealand.

“We worked with Pie Face through concept, design, build and sign off. Taking the Australian design we drew up plans from scratch to replicate the Australian shop fit-out and worked very closely with the client to get the shops up and running.”

Team work The trio running Arch Construction make one powerful team. The lean and mean machine, not only turn projects around efficiently, but also to suit any budget.

Vaughan, a former builder himself, is at the helm overseeing the smooth running of the business. He is backed up by project manager David Carneige, who has run his own business in the UK and has a keen understanding of customers needs. The third member is Alan Bird, a licensed designer practitioner. He understands and completes the nuts and bolts of the drawings and sets up building consent documentation

“The three of us are also builders by trade, which I think is a defining part of the business. Our building backgrounds mean we understand the ins and outs of what the client might need and foresee any problems. We understand and communicate well with all the trades and consultants that are required to complete the job at hand. We still enjoy getting our tools out occasionally.”

So if you want your business to stand out from the crowd get in contact with Arch Construction to oversee the fit-out. AT

Kevin says the company builds everything from high-end architectural homes to small baches and gates, and works closely with owners and architects to ensure the client gets exactly what they want, within their budget.

“We’re a small company and have a crew of 10. Some of my guys have been with me quite a few years,” he says. “It means we offer more personal attention and our quality control is stricter; I’m happy being hands on.”

Communication with the client and architect is critical and Kevin enjoys being involved in the process from start to completion. Innovation is another feature of K2 Builders’ work, with the company used to building on steep, difficult sites.

Another string in the company’s bow is that it’s established a good reputation on the island, with most of its work coming from referrals from past clients, architects, designers and suppliers. AT

Light, strong and versatile – the Plaztuff solution The tyranny of isolation has always pushed us to think outside of the box and Kiwis have been the creators of world changing ideas. Now, with the development of Plaztuff – an exciting new high tech polymer sheeting product developed as a lightweight alternative to steel, stainless steel and aluminium – New Zealand industry is the benefactor of this strong example of Kiwi ingenuity.

Developed in New Zealand and perfected during the past 15 years, Plaztuff materials as sheet products are available for an increasingly diverse range of applications, says Peter Barrow technical and sales manager for Enviroplaz International Ltd – the firm set up to take Plaztuff to the market.

“Plaztuff has been designed as a polymer alternative to steel, stainless steel and aluminium, and can be used as a composite with these materials, or as a stand-alone material for a wide range of applications,” Peter says. “Engineers are starting to see Plaztuff as a good option as an alternative, manufactured entirely in New Zealand.”

Enviroplaz International now offers a comprehensive CNC routing service, which allows the company to cut components to customers’ exact requirements.

including large dimension tanks and truck bodies, such as the food waste truck bodies and waste glass collection bodies for vehicles being developed by Manco Environmental.

The use of Plaztuff as opposed to steel bins on the waste glass collection vehicles minimised the weight of the vehicles by a tonne. “The trucks were overweight in the front axle by 400kg,” Peter says.

“Not only does taking a tonne out put the trucks back within the legal limit, but it enables another 600kg of product to be contained in the bin and still be within the desired weight.”

“Along with our nationwide licensees we’re also in Fiji, the UK and we’re about to move into the Thailand market. People outside of New Zealand have seen this product and, with nobody else doing the same thing, they want to work with this product.”

Products designed to meet exact specificationsPlaztuff Hyspec Sheet has been developed as the core product and with the addition of Hyslip truck deck liners, Hytread walkway sheet and Hysab anti-microbial sheet, Enviroplaz International now offers a comprehensive range of sheet products.

The new CNC machining capabilities allow the company to cut and rout not just their own materials, but other materials as well, and Enviroplaz International can offer that service throughout Auckland and through its nationwide licensees.

Along with its extrusion welding systems and nationwide coverage, the company can make a wide range of products anywhere in the country for a wide range of industries,

Built to specification, Plaztuff’s Hyspec Sheet is a strong high-tech polymer suitable for use in a full range of tanks and structures for carrying, containing and storing liquids and is equally suitable for use in a wide range of commercial and industrial applications.

A new range of Plaztuff Hyslip deck liners are available for trucks, loader buckets or other machinery that protect aluminium and steel decks from wear and hang ups. They are fully weldable, meaning the extra high wear areas can be replaced without having to replace the entire liner.

Tankers are custom built to customers’ exact specifications and can be built with lockers to contain all ancillary equipment. Sub-frames and pumping gear can also be provided.

Plaztuff is also ideal for fire tenders and can be coloured to fire engine red with a guaranteed UV life of more than 20 years.

Along with its light weight, Plaztuff can handle any environment without rust, corrosion or rot, making it ideal for handling a wide range of waste products and it can be used to fabricate a range of bins, skips and transport containers.

Suitable for use in the commercial and recreational boating industries, Plaztuff can be used to manufacture a wide range of power boat hulls, barges, dories and tenders, as well as a range of docking and boat lifting systems.

The company’s new Plaztuff Hytread, Tuffwalk and Hysab antimicrobial sheeting gives industry access to a comprehensive range of sheet products. “All Plaztuff sheet is made to FDA food grade standard and with a high UV factor it offers a range of advantages including the reduction of weight,” Peter says.

Plaztuff has a density of 960 kg per cubic metre of material, compared with steel which is close to eight tonnes per cubic metre. This means an equivalent Plaztuff product can be considerably lighter.

“The big difference with Plaztuff is the weight. Then on top of that it is inert, won’t rust, corrode, rot, get osmosis or break down under UV, permanently coloured to your choice and you’ve got a product that can go out into the environment and last for 30 years,” he says. AT

Custom moulding to turn your concept into reality

Plastic Rotational Moulding Company (PRM) has seen many twists and turns over the years, and given the fact they were founded in the 1980s after separating from the main part of the business at the time, AHI, that’s really no surprise. PRM provide rotational moulding solutions for a wide variety of clients all around New Zealand, so it’s not just the manufacturing itself that they take care of.

With their expertise and strong team of ten, they project manage each job that comes their way so that each client is provided with the best solution for their needs.

A lot of work they do is contract moulding so if you want to improve space utilisation, develop new products without the expense or risk of blow moulding and injection moulding, or are looking to exit manufacturing and focus on the sales and marketing of your products, then PRM are here to help.

They offer a complete service to customers, from concept to completion, and are more than confident in their ability to find the best solution for customers.

“We really take pride in the quality that we provide, we’re always on the end of the phone and we stand behind the product that leaves the factory door,” says general manager, Aaron Bannister.

Their base in Auckland went through a growth phase last year resulting in an expansion of the factory floor and therefore an increase in capacity and size of products they can mould.

Part of the expansion also included the purchase of a 4m oven, one of only two in New Zealand, which they personally delivered from Australia and assembled themselves.

During the years, PRM has formed various other companies including Mouldings Unlimited, with offices in Ashhurst and Ashburton (South Island). Although all three offer the same service, PRM is the biggest of the three.

With their presence across the country and links with many other companies in the industry, PRM have what seems to be all the necessary equipment and connections needed to fulfil any customer requirement. Anything is possible with PRM. AT
