From the PresidentIn this world of algorithms, metrics, “likes,” and “friends,” numbers take on new significance. For those of us interested in nature, the numbers give us pause. Endangered wildlife, disappearing natural places, oceans filled with plastic trash—numbers around these issues can be discouraging. But, at Audubon Nature Institute, we have numbers that shine a ray of hope.

Our 2017 Annual Report is, at its core, a report of our financials. One of Audubon’s primary objectives is to “operate a financially self-sufficient collection of museums and parks.” It’s a pledge we renew every day as we work with donors, members, guests, and other supporters who depend on our organization to wisely use the resources they give us.

Because of this careful management, we have an impact on other numbers just as central to our mission —the number of underserved children we welcome, the number of endangered species programs we participate in, the number of injured animals we treat and release back into local waters, the number of excellent students earning free memberships for achieving good grades.

Our 2017 Annual Report reflects these numbers, all made possible by you—our donors, members, guests, and community. Through involvement with Audubon, your efforts are creating hope locally and around the world. From everyone here at Audubon Nature Institute, thank you for all you do and for being an essential part of our family.

Gorilla Numbers Game It’s the number of primary colors, and, according to the Pythagoreans, the first true number. For basketball fans, it’s points earned for a shot beyond the arc. But, for Audubon Zoo in 2017, the number three had deeper meaning as changes were launched in the group of primates under our care. Three gorillas made new homes at Audubon Zoo in 2017, increasing opportunities for conservation breeding that could boost numbers and diversify the genetics of these highly endangered animals. While Audubon Zoo welcomed gorillas Okpara, Alafia, and Tumani, international animal conservation scientists were planning more moves in 2018, each carefully calculated to maximize the potential for baby primates in Audubon’s future.

Groundbreaking Partnerships Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center welcomed the first group of animals from San Diego Zoo Global as part of an innovative partnership between the two animal conservation leaders to bolster populations of declining species. The collaboration—Alliance for Sustainable Wildlife—is a modern-day ark to preserve animals that are vulnerable in the wild and sustain populations in human care. The first arrivals included reticulated giraffe, sable, bongo, okapi, common eland, and yellow-backed duiker. Based on the conservation premise that a few hundred is a few hundred too few, the Alliance focuses on animals that live in large herds or flocks. These are species that by their very nature need space for large populations to be viable, sustainable breeding groups.

Rediscovering Nature in the East When a cherished community resources comes back to life after a long hiatus, that’s cause for celebration. Audubon Louisiana Nature Center in New Orleans East reopened in 2017 after recovering from the devastating blow of Hurricane Katrina. Was it worth the wait? Check out the smiles on the faces above, just some of the first visitors who came to the Nature Center to experience a beautiful new interpretive center, winding boardwalks through forests and swamps, and tranquil nature trails that are home to an array of Louisiana wildlife.

Plastics Awareness—and Action The looming threat of single-use plastics to our environment became alarmingly evident in 2017, and Audubon Nature Institute joined with other conservation organizations to battle it. The City of New Orleans recognized Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in 2017 as we joined nineteen other aquariums across the country to initiate a shift away from these destructive plastics and build market demand for alternatives. The process began, for example, for Audubon gift shops to phase out single-use plastic bags and look toward offering water in aluminum cans. The New Orleans City Council commended the Aquarium for its leadership in educating the public about the harmful effects of plastic trash and alternatives that are better for our environment —especially our oceans.

Animal BabiesIt’s a high-stakes numbers game for species around the world. Conservation organizations everywhere work to boost numbers of endangered and disappearing animals. It’s a tough fight, but at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center, Audubon Zoo, and all our museums and parks, we’re committed to saving animals.

At Audubon Zoo, for example, we had good news to report in 2017 with 44 endangered or vulnerable animals born. The celebrated births included two black-and-white ruffed lemurs, a Colobus monkey, and the Barasingha deer (pictured left). At the Survival Center, a baby bongo arrived in December.

What facility had the most babies? Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium welcomed record-breaking new additions, both on-site and at the Audubon Insect Rearing Facility (IRF) in New Orleans East. The IRF maintains a large quantity of insects numbering in the thousands for the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium and includes housing extra bugs along with those they breed and raise in the lab.

Which group of animals had the most births or hatchings? It’s not the mammals! Audubon Zoo’s reptile department had 74 reptile hatchings and births as well as 57 new amphibians in 2017.

Amazing InsectsIn 2017, Audubon entomologists bred tarantula hawks for the first time. These insects made their local debut at Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, and are teaching visitors about the beauty of this very large wasp that preys on spiders. Insect experts hope to repeat the tarantula hawk breeding success in 2018. While breeding numbers for many species may number in the double digits, for insects, breeding goals can reach into the thousands. At Audubon’s Insect Rearing Facility, entomologists house bugs both from other countries and inside the United States, along with the insects bred right on-site. Some beetles take as long as three years to mature, and some stick insect eggs may take as long as nine months to hatch!

Ruby ArrivesThe Aquarium welcomed Ruby to the Audubon family in early 2017. This young endangered sea otter was rescued and rehabilitated after being abandoned as a day-old pup off the California coast. She captured hearts at the Aquarium, but who knew she was psychic as well? In December, Ruby successfully picked the winner of the 2018 Sugar Bowl via strategic selection of a ’Bama ice treat, prompting a rousing chorus of “Roll Tide!” from onlookers.

Love to LearnWant to see the impact of Audubon Nature Institute’s education outreach? Just count the number of buses lining up in front of our attractions. School children spill out by the thousands, brimming with excitement that is energizing. That kind of learning goes on all year long at Audubon Nature Institute, even off the public pathways and outside of regular operating hours. For example, in 2017 the Zoo’s education team taught our guests about the wonders of wildlife, helping create a memorable experience that transcends generations. At the Aquarium, visitors drew inspiration from the impressive Great Maya Reef. Learning took a leap at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium when visitors sampled dishes made with insects, and visitors explored our local Louisiana wildlife at the Nature Center.

Entomologist for a DayThe staff at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium had some help when eight-year-old Cameron Foret was awarded a coveted spot as an Audubon Entomologist for a day. “Cam has loved insects since she was a toddler,” her parents said. She was so inspired by her visit to the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium she began collecting specimens of her own, researching species, and keeping a field journal. She also saved her allowance to buy pet hissing cockroaches! Shadowing Audubon staff, Cam worked in the butterfly garden, fed bugs, talked to guests about roaches, and still couldn’t get enough. Her experience is a heartwarming example of igniting a spark in the next generation and fostering a love of learning.

Touching Hearts and MindsMore than one hundred animals under Audubon’s care have a special mission: to serve as Animal Ambassadors, reaching out for a unique impact on guests. While many animals in Audubon’s population live in habitats carefully designed to be like the wild, Animal Ambassadors are trained to meet guests face-to-face. In 2017 these wonderful ambassadors for wildlife included Maui, a military macaw; Chobe, an African serval; Aragogra the tarantula; and the unforgettable Mr. Miyagi, a Eurasian eagle-owl that trained for flight demonstrations in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Through careful, patient, and humane conditioning by Audubon animal experts, these ambassadors inspire future conservationists, creating hope for our planet.

Education EventsFun-filled events entertained and educated with irresistible offerings such as Hoppy Thanksgiving, Crawloween, and Chocolate Covered Insects Day at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. At the Zoo, there was ZOObilation and Earth Fest, while the Aquarium hosted World Wetlands Day and SEAlebration. The Nature Center proudly held its first Fall Festival for visitors who came to enjoy the great outdoors. Education programing again included the popular Zoo Camps, home school classes, Aqua School, and wildlife presentations. New programs included evening flashlight tours at the Nature Center.

Beyond BooksIn 2017 Audubon education programs inspired hands-on learning for students with 1,207 outreach and school programs. Animals are always a hit, especially when combined with biofacts and irresistible presentations. In addition to schools, Audubon’s four education outreach vehicles—the ZOOmobile sponsored by Shell, AquaVan sponsored by Chevron, Wetland Express sponsored by The New Orleans Pelicans, and Bugmobile—continued their mission of traveling to daycare centers, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and churches.

Reef RescuersThe Aquarium took a deep dive into virtual reality with Reef Rescue, where visitors became Reef Rangers and helped restore the undersea home of two Great Barrier Reef resident fish named Sting and Bob. Along the way, guests took home an appreciation for the underwater worlds, learning how important they are to the entire planet.

Teaching TeachersTeacher workshops at Audubon in 2017 covered topics ranging from deep ocean exploration to new state science standards. Audubon even hosted a sleepover at Audubon Louisiana Nature Center to introduce teachers to all the great resources at that recently-reopened gem. Audubon is especially grateful to the new Teacher Advisory Council, made up of teachers from across content areas and grades. They are Audubon’s ambassadors throughout the area and also provide valuable guidance to Audubon’s team in creating programming and meeting the changing needs of today’s teachers.

Raye’s Big Year2017 was a big year for Raye, a Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle brought to Audubon’s Coastal Wildlife Network (CWN) after being found injured and dehydrated, tangled in fishing line. After an eight-month recovery at CWN, Raye was released back into his home waters near Lake Charles by CWN, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and the fisherman who initially rescued him.

It’s a GirlIt didn’t take long for the conservation partnership between Audubon Nature Institute and San Diego Zoo Global to script a significant success story: the birth of a baby Eastern bongo, a critically endangered species of antelope battling for survival in the jungles and forests of Africa. Born in December at Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center, the young calf is in good health and is a welcomed member of the new herd.

Dining with the SharksSeats at the adventurous Summer of Sustainability dining series sold out fast in 2017. Acclaimed New Orleans chefs from Audubon’s Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries Chef Council and Restaurant Partnership Program offered irresistible dishes highlighting sustainable bounty from the Gulf of Mexico at settings such as the Aquarium’s Gulf of Mexico habitat. The popular program was poised for continued success in 2018.

Crane CountAn even dozen—that’s the number of endangered whooping cranes Audubon experts helped return to the wild during 2017 through a new partnership with Chevron and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Both whooping cranes and endangered Mississippi sandhill cranes were hatched in 2017 as part of Alliance for Sustainable Wildlife, a partnership program between Audubon and San Diego Zoo Global at Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center.

Kickstarting SurvivalWe’re not really supposed to have favorites, so would it be okay to admit that penguins hold a special place in the hearts of all of us at Audubon? Guests agree – the penguin habitat at the Aquarium is a favorite spot, and a penguin encounter is a most sought-after experience. But that’s not the only reason Audubon embraced the “Invest in the Nest” kickstarter project along with zoo and aquarium colleagues around the world in 2017. The American Zoo and Aquarium Association collaborative project raised almost $200,000 to build 1,500 nests in penguin colonies across Namibia and South Africa. Those are numbers that add up to increased chances of survival for the world’s endangered African penguins.

Audubon is for Everyone Each new year offers new opportunities to bring the magic of an Audubon experience to everyone throughout our community and beyond. In 2017, minority and underserved guests celebrated the wonders of nature through Audubon’s Community Outreach Program and other efforts. From special events that showcased cultural heritage to admission discount offerings, Audubon facilities and programs were accessible to and enjoyed by all.

22

Certified InclusiveAudubon celebrated certification by KultureCity in 2017. Audubon Aquarium of the Americas was the first aquarium to earn the distinction and Audubon Zoo was among the first zoos in the country to become certified. The goal is to increase accessibility throughout Audubon’s museums for visitors with special sensory processing needs while promoting inclusive experiences. Audubon staff went through special training to create an inclusive community where play and learning connect for all families.

Rewarding ExcellenceThe longstanding partnership that Audubon Nature Institute and New Orleans Museum of Art have with the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation continued to blossom during the academic year ending in 2017. A record-setting 211,582 students took part in the program that rewards excellence in the classroom. As part of this program Audubon Nature Institute held two days with free admission at the Zoo, Aquarium, and Butterfly Garden and Insectarium for Taylor Students and Scholars to visit with their families.

VolunteersAll across Audubon, volunteers contribute time and effort to helping us Celebrate the Wonders of Nature. They play an essential role in Audubon’s success. In 2017, the volunteer corps worked 65,586 hours, and Audubon honored Glenn Ousset for his many years of volunteer service at the Nature Center.

2323

The Business of CommunityIn 2017, Audubon’s purchases from diverse suppliers totaled nearly $4.1 million. In partnership with Good Work Network, Audubon’s “Lunch and Learn’’ sessions encouraged local women- and minority-owned firms to learn about opportunities at Audubon and included painters, general contractors, geotechnical and engineering services, marketing firms, catering companies, welders, electricians and landscape architects. Good Work Network supports small businesses to help them improve their skills, realize their full potential and become active participants in the local economy. Audubon hoped to add more of these suppliers in 2018.

Free Concerts in the ParkBack by popular demand, Audubon hosted Music Under the Oaks, a complimentary concert series in Audubon Park at the Newman Bandstand. Presented by Bellwether Technology and IBERIABANK, both the spring and fall series continued to be popular events. “IBERIABANK is thrilled to continue this partnership,’’ said IBERIABANK New Orleans Market President Hunter Hill. “The concerts are free and a great way to bring our community together.’’ Bellwether President Poco Sloss stated, “The concerts are wonderful community events where friends and families may enjoy music from local, talented musicians in a spectacular setting.”

Joining the FunFrom military discounts to Parish Appreciation Days, Audubon offered fun for everyone. A great example is the traditional Mother’s Day event at Audubon Zoo, presented by Children’s Hospital and Touro Infirmary in 2017, where moms got complimentary admission and everyone was treated to a concert by local favorite Irma Thomas. Discount admissions throughout the year were offered to groups that included the United States Military, and City of New Orleans and State of Louisiana employees.

A New Place to PlayThanks to a generous donation from Saints star quarterback Drew Brees and wife Brittany through their Brees Dream Foundation, Audubon Park visitors enjoyed a pioneering playground that opened in 2017 offering inclusive recreational opportunities for children—and adults—of all abilities.

The new Walnut Street Playground, located at the front of Audubon Park near St. Charles Avenue, promotes interactive physical, cognitive, visual, and hearing experiences for all.

Still Ahead Each passing year brings more optimism about what’s to come. Through synergy we create together, our efforts have more impact than they would if we were all acting alone. In 2018, this synergy will bring progress on the expansive new lions habitat, as philanthropists Joy and Boysie Bollinger help us “return the roar” to Audubon Zoo with the largest single gift the Zoo has received from a private donor. The Zoo’s Jaguar Jungle exhibit will get a new nocturnal habitat with fascinating “creatures of the night,” along with a unique play area. We’ll also celebrate a new shark experience at the Aquarium, more beautiful bugs at the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, and a trip to the stars at the Nature Center. Countless thousands will reconnect with nature strolling through Audubon Park or Woldenberg Riverfront Park. All this is possible thanks to the continuing efforts of our donors, members, employees, volunteers, and guests working together with Audubon.

Parties with a PurposeIn the spring Whitney Zoo-To-Do and Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Tulane Pediatrics were wildly successful fundraisers. Together, these popular events raised more than $1.2 million to Return the Roar to Audubon Zoo in support of a new lion exhibit. In the fall, the eighth annual Scales & Ales brought more than 3,000 people to Audubon Aquarium of the Americas raising more than $225,520. Proceeds supported the importance of sustainable seafood through Audubon’s G.U.L.F. Program.
