but the warmth from the glow of the lamps still remains!

As I sat down to write, I was amazed at the various forms in which the word 'light' could be interpreted.

It could just be the gaslight of your mundane cooking stove or the romance-infusing candlelight adorning a couple's dinner table or the supreme enlightenment of King Siddhartha under the Bodhi tree.

Thank you Mr. Edison for re-inventing the light of the bulb. Without a trace of doubt, it has proved to be the backbone of this issue of Milestones.

That reminds me, any guesses as to who invented the light bulb?

Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Right?…Wrong!

We've all been taught that, but the truth is the actual inventor of the incandescent bulb was an Englishman. J.W. Starr developed the light bulb using a carbon filament inside a vacuum bulb in 1845.

And to discover how light and RCKG walk hand in hand, my dear readers,

Sit back, relax and read on…

GOD said...

"Let there be light!"

THE PLAY OF LIGHT

And light there was…in the sky – in the sun, in the moon and in the stars.

And on the Earth below, in the indomitable spirit of RCKG, whether in its charitable pursuits or

in its fun-filled fellowship meets.

And also in the amazing little glowworm or 'jugnu', who perhaps is the only living creature who

personifies the literal meaning of the word 'Torchbearer'.

And last, but not the least, in the word 'Light' itself, in the way it plays with prefixes & suffixes, words

& phrases to bring out a different essence altogether.

Thus a STORY written just for you…

The car screeched to a halt.

Anguished and fretful, I stepped out in the wild winter blizzard, only to discover a

flat tyre. There I was, miles away from home, troubled and tense, standing at the

crossroads with not a soul in sight. I looked around for help and was dismayed to see

that there was none.

It was then I spotted the tiny little cottage. The light of the lamp that hung on its porch

beckoned me with all brightness and instinctively, I tugged fiercely to my coat and

trudged against the piercing wind towards my only glimmer of hope.

Even before I could knock at the door, it opened to surprise me!

It was as though HE had been waiting for me. “Come in quickly, young man”, HE urged

as HE ushered me in. I saw HIM then. The white-bearded, sagacious face was aglow

with warm hospitality, and the light amber brown eyes shone with a spectacular sparkle.

“Make yourself comfortable for the night, my son”, said HE, “and when its morning, you can set off on your journey once again. But

before you retire, would you like to have a hot cup of tea?”

How did HE know it? That's just what I wanted.

“Yes, of course” was my willing reply. “But please make it light, will you?”

Happy and comforted, I took out my pack of cigarettes and searched through my pockets for my lighter, only to realize

I had left it behind in the car.

“Could you pass me a match-light please?” I asked.

There was no answer…the air was pregnant with a pause.

“How about I throw light on something better you could follow?” HE said softly, handing me my teacup. It was the purity in

HIS eyes and the earnestness in HIS voice – I could never have said 'no'!

And then... HE spoke.

“I know you are on your way to an important business meeting tomorrow. You have a wife to go home to, children to raise, old

parents to look after, and plenty of commitments to fulfill.I should not trouble you now. But I would still want you to come away from

all this…just for a little while…spare a few moments to do a good deed, extend a little help in the upliftment of the downtrodden,

spread a few smiles and always remember to count your blessings. It will only make you richer, happier and more content.”

Tucked under the warmth of HIS quilt, I listened to HIM mesmerized. HE went on and on through the dark hours of the

night and as the clock tick-tocked away inside, the angry thunder and lightning slowly appeased outside.

Before dawn, the nocturnal upheaval inside me had passed away.

The sunlight of the bright morning came streaming in through the louvers of my window to nudge me out of sleep.

“Wake up, my dear, its morning already!” said my wife, lovingly, “or else you will be late for the meeting!”

I I rubbed my eyes in disbelief – I was in my room, on my bed. I had been dreaming!

But the vision was as alive as ever. I could recall it vividly and it had left me enlightened. I felt

an extreme freshness surging within me. As I prepared to get ready for work, to drive ahead on

the road of life, I whistled and sang to myself with a light-heartedness I had never felt before…

Lead kindly light,

Amid the encircling gloom

Lead thou me on

The night is dark and I am far from home

Lead thou me on

Keep thou my feet

I I do not ask to see, the distant scene

One step enough for me.Oct. - Nov., 20116 - Ann. Neeta Mehrotra

thA Minute to Win it (9 September 2011)

JCI Kanpur Industrial (KIJC) organized a game competition where the 6 participants of each team had to perform various tasks in only 60 seconds. The RCKG

team - Rtns. Neeraj Prasad, Anil Agarwal, Rakesh Kapoor, Vipul Jain, and Anns. Ruchi Jain & Kiran Agarwal, vied for the top slot with other teams. That they could not reach the final round did not dampen the RCKG spirit. Their dress code, proudly stated 'Reach within to embrace humanity'!

thMeeting An Actress (13 Sept. 2011)An interaction between the upcoming actress Sonam Kapoor and women leading major social organizations of the city was organized at the i-Next office. With our Club President unavailable Ann. Seema Bhartiya (w/o Secretary Rtn. Rajiv Bhartiya) represented RCKG for the informal chat session.

rdDown Memory Lane (23 Sept. 2011)The card simply said “Down Memory Lane” and the

venue was rightly fixed at the 121 year old thCawnpore Club. This is the 16 year of RCKG

and a fellowship meet was organized to celebrate it with “music of our times”. The 4 Rotarian couples, Drs. Atul & Rashmi Kapoor, Suchitra and Raghavendrajit Singh, Gopal and

Vineeta Kejriwal and Anup and Neeta Mehrotra, went overboard searching, collecting and recording

the old time musical blockbusters. That a record breaking number of 93 members turned up went to prove that nostalgia is magnetic. Songs that reminded one of 'my good old IIT days' or of an LP record 'bought from my pocket money' were chorused by all, who danced in step with the rhythm and the beat.

A delectable dinner that followed was the icing on the cake. Each one left with a smile on their lips and a heart that sang

“I could have danced all night…and still have begged for more!”

thDiwali Celebrations (17 October 2011)This Diwali get-together was arranged with a difference. Specially crafted mobile phone holders were sent as invitation cards – a keepsake coupled with utility. The 5 project directors – Rtn. Sandeep Gupta & Ann Manjari, Rtn. Vikas Malhotra & Ann Geeta, Rtn. Ajay Agarwal & Ann Geeta, Rtn. Kanchan Khanna & Ann Ragini and Rtn. Sandeep Narain & Ann Gunjan – all stepped onto the scene in smart club attires. The photo shoot set at the entrance had an array of spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds as an eye-catching backdrop that continued indoors too. Needless to say, the festive spirits were high and the members enjoyed their card games with great gusto. Sumptuous snacks whetted appetites and good food and desserts satiated them. We are grateful to Rtn. Vikas, who sponsored a major portion of the eatables. The exuberant 75 members tuned the evening to a perfect celebratory mode!

The birthday celebrations were held at the Boys and the Girls Balgrah. Anns Minu Sutwala, Manju Agarwal, Nandita Gupta, Neha Tandon, Rekha Vaid, Ritu Tandon, Ruchi Jain, Sandhya Mohla, Annet Devika Gupta played the perfect hosts for September and October.

They took special care to serve a change in cuisines that delighted the young ones. Games and other forms of entertainment were planned too. Children of the Girls Balgrah were presented with exciting gifts – school bags, badminton racquets, folding tables etc. – over games of Housie. On a different note, a colorful puppet show at the Boys Balgrah tickled the young lads. Our president, Rtn. Archana Khaitan, has been kind enough to donate a bicycle to Shivani, to commute to Vidya Mandir, her school.Furthermore, Ann Nivedita Tandon, Ann Ragini Khanna, Ann Manisha Chaudhary have adopted 3 differently-abled girls from the Girls Balgrah for this year. These girls attend "Amrita", a school for special children run with great compassion by Ann Dr. Rashmi Kapoor.

Located at the premises of the Pratap Singh & Sons petrol pump, Mall Road, Jeevni is a T.B. clinic run by the Rotary Club of Kanpur Greater since Nov. 2002. The Anns of our club come together with

unfailing dedication once a week (every Tuesday, between 11 a.m. & 1 p.m.) to distribute free medicines to poor patients. (The T.B. Comittee can be seen on the cover)

As of today, Jeevni has helped cure close to 1500 people afflicted by tuberculosis, (300 of them are MDR patients ) RCKG has been fortunate enough to receive an elusive matching grant of 21 lacs from the Rotary International in association with the Rotary Club of Sweden for 2 years.

Shalini Gupta was diagnosed with bone T.B. Her treatment at Jeevni began on Nov.2010. She is still under treatment and is responding very well to the medicines administered.

Durgesh Kumar Gupta was an MDR (multi drug resistant) patient who started treatment on 14.9.10 and was converted to ATT (anti tubercular treatment). He is fully cured and left the clinic with a smile on 20.9.11.

Arti Mansukha (21.9.10 to 20.9.11), Kalpana Shukla (21.9.10 to 19.9.11) & Neelam Chaurasia (21.10.10 to 27.9.11), were treated for a year & are declared cured now.

Pulse Polio Drive th(25 September 2011)

The Pulse Polio Clinic, RCKG's oldest initiative in community service, was held at Raina Market on a Sunday morning. Members present included President Rtn. Archana Khaitan.Rtn. Atul Kanodia, Rtn. Anup Mehrotra andRtn. Gopal Bhargava.

Dear Friends, Friday, Oct 21, 2011

Our club has taken up some good humanitarian projects over the years, a project that stands out is the T.B. Project, which has stood the test of time, received recognition and support from the most unexpected quarters. An ambitious effort was made to extend this project to MDR (Multiple Drug Resistant) patients, but in recent times, the activity has been restricted to ATT (General T.B.) patients due to limited resources.

As members of this club, we have contributed in some way or the other to do something good for the underprivileged, any contribution of resources or time leaves one with a deep sense of satisfaction which can only be experienced on seeing the results of ones effort. Just imagine the feeling when one can save a life- save a family from falling apart, spare a person from intense pain, pain which lasts till the very end, with a contribution that can clearly be termed insignificant, the catch being that this contribution per patient is required every month for about two years, the length of time the MDR patient would have to bear torture and pain since most such patients do not have the means to spend on medication.

Since some long term assurance is a precondition for taking up ATT or MDR patients, we can move forward with confidence if sources of funds can be tied up, on analyzing the fund availability in the club, it seems that the best way forward is that we allow the ATT project to be funded by the club, while any individual can also sponsor one or more MDR patients. We should target about 50 MDR patients for this project to be relevant and make an impact keeping in mind that cost per month per patient will be Rs.1700/- and duration of treatment will be two years.

Treating 50 MDR patients will be a drop in the ocean, will not eradicate T.B. from the face of this highly polluted city but will not hit our balance sheets if we adopt one or more patients, the anomaly of nature is that diseases that require expensive treatment hit the poorest section of our society, and when a person gets afflicted by T.B. and that too the multiple drug resistant form he/she looses all hope as treatment is in most cases beyond the reach of the so called lower or middle class Kanpurite.

We look forward to your gracious contribution.Rtn. Vijay Parikh

Hello everyone,

October and November have proved to be months of many firsts

for me. Although I have spent my entire childhood in Kanpur,

my maiden visit to the glittering 'Kaanch Mandir'

for the Milestones cover photo shoot was breathtaking to say

the least. Interestingly, while the Editor-in-chief struck a pose in front

of the lens, I widened my creative horizons as I donned a new

role of the 'professional' photographer-in-chief!

But more importantly, I realized how extraordinary it is to do something for the first

time....

My first bicycle ride and the subsequent fall…the delectable flavour of my first self-

cooked meal…that sinking yet ecstatic sensation that engulfed me as the flight of my first air journey took off...all are

deeply etched in my memory. They remind me of the pure 'awesomeness' of a maiden pursuit.

Given the dull monotony of everyday life, I guess we owe it to ourselves, if not for anyone else,

to indulge more frequently

in the amazing joy of experimentation.

So, when was the last time you did something for the first time?
