Hot hay near Nashua

The Nashua Fire Department and ValleyCounty Long Run were called
out to a fireon the Bellon Farm located on the MilkRiver bottom
near Nashua this past Fridaynight shortly after 9:00 when a
freshlybaled hay stack self ignited (spontaneouscombustion).
Although hay fires can selfignite in stacks several years old,
these hayfires usually occur within six weeks of balingas freshly
cut forage materials are not dead.Some respiration continues, and a
verysmall amount of heat is produced and mayhelp provide proper
conditions for growth ofbacteria. After baling, a small supply of
airand a favorable moisture level cause themicroorganisms to begin
to feed and multiply,generating heat in the process. Dependingon
the exact conditions, the thermophilicbacteria and the heat they
generate canconvert the hay to a form similar to a carbonsponge
with microscopic pores. In this formand at the high temperatures
present inheated hay, the material combines readilywith oxygen. In
the presence of air, thematerial can self-ignite very quickly.

TelAune, a 268-pound piggy that earned Medium/Heavy Weight Grand
Championas well as receiving Overall Grand Champion status. It was
purchased by Dr.Reyling for $4.50 per pound ($1,206). Thats Gina
