Throughout the sum-mer months, the LamontPublic Library held theirAnnual Summer

Reading Program. The walk-in day pro-

gram was open to chil-dren from ages four to12, to instill a love ofreading into the newgeneration.

Among the peoplewho worked to makethis program a successwas Krystal Kinash, whoassisted with the deco-rating and the carryingout of events throughoutthe seven-week-pro-gram.

This year followed thetheme of "Imagine,"which showcased a dif-ferent classical storyevery Wednesday, in allof that day's stories andgames tying together thecommon theme.

The program alsoincluded a visit from"Magic Mike" who per-formed a special magicshow for the children.

The program was anoverall success and hadgreat turnout nearlyevery single week aver-aging close to 30 children

every week.The program has been

running for roughly 20years. There has alwaysbeen an exceptionalturnout for these eventsevery summer, and there

were years where thelibrary was not able toprovide sufficient spacefor the amount of kidsthat had turned up andhad to be moved into theschool gym. "I think oneyear the most kids wehad in the library was70," said Kinash.

While in the library, located conveniently inthe Lamont High School, children were treated tocrafts, games, and ofcourse a lot of greatreads.

The program hopes tobe able to give kids aplace for them to sitdown and schedule atime for reading, andgive them an opportuni-ty to have more books attheir disposal, addedKinash.

The children took partin a contest that lastedthroughout the summer,to challenge the childrento read more. Kinashexplains that while a lotof children will read agreat deal throughout

the school year, "Duringthe summer they don'treally read as much, evenif they come to thelibrary, they get two sto-ries read to them, so thatkind of helps," she says.

This Wednesday, thechildren will be treatedto a celebration, to markthe last week of the pro-gram this year. Theorganizers are holding ahot dog lunch, and arebringing in a bouncy cas-tle for the kids to enjoy. Itis also when they willannounce the winners oftheir summer readingchallenge.

A good time was hadby all, and the children

were able to enjoyspending time in a childfriendly environmentamong others their age.

The program will becoming to a close thisweek, but will definitelybe back next year witheven more fun and activ-ities for the kids with thetheme of "The amazingRace".

Even though the pro-gram is just about donefor the summer, Kinashrecommends that peoplecontinue to set aside atime for themselves tocome into the librarywith their family, andcontinue to help theirkids have the resourcesto read continuously.

Love at first sight. It not only happens to humans or animals, but

between human and animal.Such was the case with Annette Begin and her first

Anatolian Shepherd dog Tanner. "I had him for sevenyears," says Begin as hervoice breaks and shebegins to cry. While apol-ogizing profusely for dis-playing her strong emo-tions, and wiping awaytears, she looks up with abitter sweetness in hereyes. "Every time I talkabout Tanner I cry."

The St. Michael arearesident smiles wistfullyas she thinks about herbeloved companion.Tanner inspired Begin tostart her own dog breed-ing business, and the for-mation of Razi AcresAnatolian Shepherd Dogsthree years ago.

"It's such a fabulousbreed that I wanted tobring them intoCanada," says Begin, who purchased Max andZarafet three years ago.Later on, she purchasedKiraz. Recently Zarafethad her first litter ofpuppies, eight altogeth-er, who are growing andthriving on Annette andher husband Gillesacreage near the hamlet.

Anatolian Shepherd Dogs (Cobi Kopegi) is theWestern term used to describe the native livestockguardian dogs from Turkey. These dogs have beenbred for thousands of years to guard sheep, goats, chickens, alpacas, horses and other livestock living inthe anatolian region of that country.

Begin is careful to point out the AnatolianShepherd is not a GermanShepherd. "An AnatolianShepherd is a full timeguardian, whereas aGerman Shepherd is a fulltime herding dog. Theyare not the same tempera-ment at all." She alsonotes that livestockguardian dog lives withthe herd full-time andprotects them with nodirection from the farm, and a herding dog inter-acts with the stock by

rounding them up and controlling the movement ofthe herd. "They are loyaland regal, and they dotheir job well," addsBegin.

Begin is a memberof the Anatolian Shepherd

Dogs International Inc., American Kennel Club. aswell as the Canadian Kennel Club. While the breedhas been recognized in Canada, she hopes that it willbecome a registered breed in the near future. "It'sbred to live in extremes and is very easy to train,"adds Begin, as they can thrive in a wide variety of cli-mates with temperatures ranging from plus 30degrees celsius to minus 50 degrees celsius. "Theyhave two coats of fur, an overcoat, and a cashmereunder coat," points out Begin.

"Our dogs are part of our family, and we appreciatethem for both their loyalty and their wonderful per-sonalities. We have created our puppy applicationquestionnaire and puppy contract specifically toensure that when the puppy goes to a new home, thatthe owners are well prepared and know what toexpect from their Anatolian."

The Anatolian's come in a variety of colours, rang-ing from fawn with or without the black mask, pinto, white or brindle. They are tall, rugged and powerful;and posses great endurance and agility. They rangein size between 27 and 29 inches tall, and weighbetween 80 to 150 pounds.

Instinctively protective, the Anatolian is a calm, reserved breed around strangers, show loyalty andlove only to his family. "Because Anatolians werebred to make independent decisions while working, owner commands may not be followed to the letter, but they are very trainable."

Dear Editor,

Conservative Envir-onment Minister PeterKent’s claim that busi-nesses near nationalparks and historic sitesare getting a “free ride”is ludicrous and insult-ing to the owners andoperators of thousandsof small businessesacross Canada.

Despite what Mr. Kent

says, operating a smallbusiness is not a “privi-lege,” it is an absoluteright of every singleCanadian who dreams ofbeing an entrepreneur. His plan to tax thesebusinesses simply forbeing close to federalland would be devastat-ing to local economies—not to mention that itwould likely be illegal.

Small businesses are a

key pillar of theCanadian economy andemploy over 5,000,000Canadians. The govern-ment should be support-ing their development, not adding fees that mayforce them to close theirdoors.

If Mr. Kent wants toraise property taxes onsmall business so muchhe should run as amunicipal politician.

Until then he shouldfocus on his job of pro-tecting the environmentand stop threateningsmall business ownerswith higherConservative taxes.

Yours sincerely,Joyce Murray, MPLiberal Party of CanadaCritic for SmallBusiness and Tourism

Victory and defeat;the human spiritalways endures

Watching video clips of athletes performing atthe Olympic Games Sunday afternoon I couldn'thelp but be moved to tears as my eyes drank inthe glorious victories, heart wrenching defeats, and painful injuries the athletes experienced.

While Canadian athletes won 18 medals in 11different sports at the 30th Olympiad, I wasmore focused on the human interest stories thatso succinctly illustrated the struggles and tri-umphs, dedication and sacrifices, hard work andunfulfilled hopes, all of the athletes sharedthroughout the games.

Even though London had its share of contro-versies and tales of corruption, it had more gen-uine moments and sincerit in my humble opin-ion. I always try to keep things in perspective, and despite some reported wrong doing, disrup-tive meddling, substance and steroid abuse, andunsubstantiated allegations of pay offs of offi-cials.

It's much harder to find and bring out the pos-itives when poor judgement and mistakes caneasily overshadow the events which are cap-tured and simultaneously relayed to viewersthroughout the world.

One news item that caught my eye, and theeye of viewers around the world was Wojdan AliSeraj Abdulrahim, the first female athlete to evercompete in the games from Saudi Arabia. Sheparticipated in the 78 kg class in judo. Althoughthe bout only lasted 82 seconds, her appearancehas already left an indelible mark.

Other impressive athletes I watched were:Double amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorious andamputee swimmer Natalie du Toit, both ofSouth Africa. There were several athletes whowere legally blind that competed in track andfield events as well as archery.

I guess it's about breaking down barriers andproving there is a place for everyone at theOlympics. There is so much more to the gamesthan medals, and it was so inspiring to see thatside of it.

There were many inspiring examples, and it isexciting to know that many young Canadianswill feel the urge to do better, be better, and settheir own examples in the days, weeks, andyears to come.

Bruderheim Agricul-tural Society started theirAg Days in 2008, duringBruderheim CentennialCelebration. They hostedchuckwagon and chariotraces, as well as eventsfor the kids to enjoy. Each year they host theevent in August, and ithas grown every year.

In 2007 the Ag groundstrack had been used for adirt bike rally, when theAg society wasapproached the chuckwagon and chariot rac-ing association to recon-struct the grounds into arace track. The Ag socie-ty spent the next yearremoving the mounds ofdirt, and the smoothingout the grounds. Thenthey placed steel pipingaround the grounds toform it into a ring. By2008 came around they

had everything ready forthe big event.

Over the last sevenyears that the Ag Dayshave been held, the eventhas grown tremendously.“We are a great location, there is no other tracklike this one betweenEdmonton and Vegre-ville,” says BruderheimAg President Vic Schne-ider. “We (the Ag socie-ty) has been told by theriders that we are thefastest track around.”

The racing associationtakes care of all theorganization of the racesand the riders. The Agsociety’s main job is totake care of the track, and keep it safe for rid-ers, as well as the horses. This year the chuckwag-on races have 45 entries, and the chariot raceshave 50 entries.

Other events that willtake place throughoutthe weekend, such as an

pancake breakfast, parade, frisbee toss forthe kids, petting zoo, andtrain rides courtesy ofthe Camrose Chamber ofCommerce.

The Ag society is luckyto receive help fromother organizations inthe town such as theBruderheim Lion’s Club, the Bruderheim MinorSports Association, andBruderheim Fire Depar-tment. This year therewill also be a steak sup-per being hosted by twolocal residents JoanneFischet and Judy Love.“We try to keep thingsmoving and entertainingfor the whole event, wedon’t want to lose peo-ples interest. Any event Iattend through the year Iam comparing and get-ting more ideas for ourown event.”

There are endlesshours that go into organ-izing the Ag Days, and

the planning pretty wellbegins as soon as thepast year is finished. There are approximately20 members on the Agsociety, and when itcomes down crunch timeeveryone does their part.

The biggest strugglethat the Ag society hasfaced in previous yearshas been parking, “Wehave gotten the ridersand animals figured outperfectly, but haveworked very hard to getthe people coming towatch to park in anorderly fashioned. Wehave now put in 30 footlong poles to help guidethe parking,” saysSchneider.

Over the last threeyears, they have had thegreat opportunity ofadding the GrahamSisters during the inter-mission, whom are trickriders, and put on anincredible show. The

addition of the sistershas brought more peopleout each year. “Thegreatest advertising thatwas given to the event, including the GrahamSisters was through

word of mouth.” Thisyear the sisters will beintroducing the act ofjumping through a ringof fire, that will surelyentertain the crowd.

Local Paso Fino enthusiast Maria Young recentlytook a trip down to the Calgary Stampede from July10-14 to promote knowledge about her horses andthe breed in general. Young, who owns and oper-

ates El Ranchito Paso Fino's with her husband Dougnear Lamont, felt more people should know aboutthe wonders of this particular breed of horses.

"We are hoping to just share the breed, and I thinkwe did a good job because a lot of older people orpeople who have injuries came by and said that theylove horses but they can not ride." However, Youngrecommended to them they should try riding a PasoFino, as they are exceptionally gentle on the rider.

The breed originatedin Spain and can since beseen all around theworld. They are general-ly bred for showman-ship and performance, however are often con-sidered the horse ofchoice for those whowish to simply have ahorse for pleasure rid-ing, as their gait allowsthe rider to feel morecomfortable and not bejostled around as muchas with other breeds. This makes it a perfecthorse for those who havea history of injury, and

need a horse that is gentler on the body, addedYoung.

She and her husband have been specializing inPaso Fino's for the past three years in this area, butshe has been around them her entire life. She grew uparound the breed as her uncle was very involvedwith them back in Columbia. This year was the first

year that she has gone tothe Calgary Stampede, however, the event hasbeen showing Paso Finosfor the past five years.

When asked whyshe finds Paso Fino's sounique, she explainedthat in many ways theyare unlike any of the otherbreeds. "Because of theirtemperament, and theirsmoothness, you don'tbounce or hurt. They arevery sociable, and theylike being with you."

Another veryprominent trait in thePaso Fino breed is theirintelligence and willing-ness to please. In general, the horses are very peo-ple orientated, and oftenbond strongly with theirprimary owner. Youngexplains that the PasoFino breed is a very lov-ing type of horse, and isgreat for those who enjoyriding, because of their

smooth gait and theirlove to be around peo-ple.Young explains thatin order to be able towork with one of thesehorses, you have to beable to bond with yourhorse. "Once they giveyou their heart, You have

it for good" says Young. During her trip to the Calgary Stampede, Young

had set up an information booth, and showed peoplewho were there why this breed is a great choice forthose who are interested in horses. "We got a reallygood response, and everyone was amazed"saysYoung. There was a total of four Paso Fino's at thestampede, with three of those being from ElRanchito. Her and her horses also took part in this yearsSummer Sizzler parade, and helped to carry theCanadian flag during the rodeo. She won a prize inthe category of best animal in the parade, and there'sno doubt that with the amount of pride and passionshe has for Paso Finos that she will be dismountingfrom her saddle anytime soon.

When the Bison arefighting, they are bump-ing heads, pushing, wal-lowing and bellowing. The mating season is aregular event each yearthat goes on from midJuly to mid August. The'rut' only happens onceper year, and Bison areearlier than other hoofed

animals. There are 700 Plains

Bison and 400 WoodBison in the park, and itis expected that their will

be 300 Plains calves and200 Wood Calves comeout of the 'rut', howeverevery year is a bit differ-ent explaing Elk IslandNational Park Superintendent Stephen Flem-ming.

The park keeps track ofthe Bison population ofthe annually, and everysecond year the Bison getcirculated to other con-servation parks. So one

year the Wood specieswill be circulated, andthe next time will be thePlains. This helps keepthe species growing in

population."It is very exciting to

see the Bison compete,it's like the BisonOlympics. However staythree bus lengths awayfor safety," says Flem-ming. The Plains Bisonare located on the lake, and the Woods Bison arelocated on Bison Looproad. There are alreadymany calves there to seeas well, as family forma-

tions.Make sure to stay in

your vehicle, and beaware of signs of distressin the animals. Watch thetail, if the tail is raised itindicates a higher levelof emotion, if the tail isstraight up it means thatthe Bison is angry.During the 'rut' the ani-mals are more aggres-sive, and less cautious ofpeople and vehicles.
