Dear Friends, Happy to be home again from time away on vacation. I was with a priest friend, Fr. Bob Kennedy in Rochester, New York at one of the Finger Lakes. The weather was filled with sunshine, and without the usual breezes it was a bit warm. One of the highlights was going to Glimmerglass Opera House in Cooperstown, NY, to see the Magic Flute. The person who did the translation for this production is Kelley Rourke the daughter of my former parishioners at St George, Mike and Marie Rourke, and the niece of our pianist Julie Cherry. The performance was very well done and Kelley’s work and the production was praised in the New York Times. I also visited with friends in the Louisville, Kentucky area. Mrs. Judy Bullock is the Director of the Office of Worship for the Archdiocese and we are long time colleagues in the worship field. I was able to spend a day at St Meinrad in Indiana, where I attended College and Theology which was a blessing, and reconnect with a former spiritual director Fr. Paul Scaglione, who, while retired, is creating a retreat program for the dying. This unique program has made a deep impact on many families. I returned to see so many good faces. Had a real fine turnout for the Meet and Greet Youth Ministry Kick Off last Sunday. Lots of young folks dodging water balloons. School has begun well and I anticipate the Preschool to begin this week in “new digs.” There will be an open house opportunity on an upcoming Sunday. I was told today that construction of the Porte-cochere will begin in about three weeks. We will be creating a new community garden on the parish campus utilizing some of the adjacent property that was bought a few years ago. This creation of this project will be done by one of our Eagle Scouts and the Community Gardening “Gardeners.” The CRHP Men’s Retreat is coming the last weekend of August. As was said this past Sunday, LSU is not playing that weekend, NASCAR is not racing, and the Saints are not playing either. So no sports excuse. I’m praying that all the other excuses will dissolve.

LIFE TOGETHER

St. Aphonsus Parish is interested in learning about how the Retreats work for their parish. So everyone, stay cool. Love

THE HOSPICE OF BATON ROUGE IS IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS

The Hospice of Baton Rouge needs volunteers to fulfill our mission as an organization. Volunteers help in every aspect of the patient care process. We have office, direct care, bereavement, Pet Peace of Mind, and fundraising event volunteers that all work as a team to make certain we are always being as effective as possible. In these different placements our volunteers come to truly understand the heart and complexity of hospice care, not only from physical comfort to our patients, but also from a spiritual and social perspective. If you would like to find out more information, please do not hesitate to contact us For further information contact: Evelyn Ramirez at 225.767.4673 or email [email protected].

Ministry Service Knows a Sacrificial Mindset In the weeks to come, we

will begin the Stewardship of Ministry portion of our annual Total Stewardship effort. As St. Paul wrote the church in Ephesus, God has equipped us “for the work of ministry for building up the body of Christ.” We have been Equipped to Build the Kingdom, an active and purposeful calling. And, as illustrated most meaningfully through the loving sacrifice of Jesus, we know that ministry is true service on behalf of others to the glory of Christ. As you think about this ministry focus, please consider the ministries and pro-grams in which you’d most like to serve God in this parish.
