Support Those Who Support UsIt is such a pleasure to work with the SFBA chapter and it’s supporters. Everyone is so
enthusiastic and willing to contribute to our great chapter that it makes my job so much
easier. I continue to receive checks and commitments from our great contractor and
associate members, including many I haven't even contacted. Remember, the generous
support of these fine members is what enables our chapter to host so many wonderful
events, including the upcoming Awards Banquet. So, let’s not forget to thank and support

I love sports. It’s the competition,
camaraderie and friendship, honing of skills
and time with Dad. Sports are great. As a
kid, I was always outside playing
something. We started the school year with
football, then it was basketball in the
wintertime and spring was definitely the
start of baseball season.
Once, I took my Dad’s golf club to the
park and hit some golf balls with it. I got
grass stains on his 7-iron and quickly put it
back in the bag! Big mistake! Big, big
mistake! He was upset when it was time to
pull out the club to hit a shot and it wasn’t
clean! I never knew about cleaning a golf
club! What could be such a big deal about a
few grass stains? Baseball bats were always
ready to go!
That was my first golf lesson. As time
went on, I learned about golf etiquette
(never throw a club after a bad shot!) and
got the chance to play with my Father once
a week while living in Ohio. Living nearby
to my golfing idol, Tom Weiskopf, helped
strengthen my interest, too. From then on,
golf became my sport to play. I loved the
challenging and fun moments that it
brought to me. Over the years, I’ve had the
chance to play golf and listen to stories
from the many others who have been bitten
by the golf bug. I asked some of my CLCA
buddies and friends to share their stories
and thoughts. Here are just a few.
A Father and His Son
A father and his son are playing the 12th
hole, when the son’s tee shot lands behind a
huge, 100 foot tall Redwood tree. The son
looks at his father and says, "How would
you play this one? Lay up and take the
extra stroke?"
The father replies: "When I was your
age, I'd just play right over this tree."
The son, not wanting to be shown up by
the old man, proceeds to hit the ball high,
but not high enough. It bounces off the tree
and lands out of bounds. The son who is
really mad at this point, asks his father how
he EVER hit a ball over that tree.
The father replied: "Well, when I was
your age, that tree was only three feet tall."
The Lesson
A retiree was given a set of golf clubs by his
co-workers.
Thinking he’d try the game, he asked
the local pro for lessons, explaining that he
knew nothing whatever of the game. The
pro showed him the stance and swing and
then said, “Just hit the ball toward the flag
on the first green.”
The novice teed up and smacked the ball
straight down the fairway and onto the
green, where it stopped inches from the
hole. “Now what?” the fellow asked the
speechless pro.
The pro just stood there and stared at
the novice. “Uh…you’re supposed to hit the
ball into the cup,” the pro finally said after
he was able to speak again.
“Oh great! NOW you tell me,” said the
beginner in a disgusted tone.
Heavenly Helper
A golfer well into his golden years had a
lifelong ambition to play one hole at Pebble
Beach, California the way the pros do it.
The pros drive the ball out over the water
onto the green that is on a spit of land that
juts out off the coast. It was something he
had tried hundreds of times without
success. His ball always fell short, into the
water. Because of this he never used a new
ball on this particular hole. He always
picked out one that had a cut or a nick.
Recently, he went to Pebble Beach to try
again. When he came to the fateful hole, he
teed up an old cut ball and said a silent
prayer. Before he hit it however, a powerful
voice from above said, "WAIT... REPLACE
THAT OLD BALL WITH A BRAND-NEW
BALL." He complied, with some slight
misgiving, despite the fact that the Lord
seemed to be implying that He was going
to let him finally achieve his lifelong
ambition. As he stepped up to the tee once
more, the voice came down again, "WAIT...
STEP BACK... TAKE A PRACTICE
SWING." So he stepped back and took a
practice swing. The voice boomed out

Association Supports Legislation toForbid Mandatory Use of E-Verify
CLCA has been working hard to support a
bill in the state legislature that would
among other things, prohibit cities,
counties, and special districts from
requiring an employer to use the flawed
federal electronic employment verification
system to receive a government contract or
obtain a local business license or permit.
Assembly Bill 2076, authored by
Assembly Member Felipe Fuentes (D-Los
Angeles) and sponsored by the Service
Employees International Union, has been
approved by the Assembly and is moving
in the state Senate.
We maintain that the federal electronic
employment verification system, the E-
Verify Program, is unworkable for most
employers. There are accuracy and
timeliness problems, as well as problems
caused by the unfortunate fact that the
system cannot catch individuals who
assume the identity of a person who has a
valid social security number.
Any mandatory use of an electronic
employment verification system to identify
ineligible workers must give employers
accurate and reliable data and be enacted as
part of comprehensive federal immigration
reform legislation.
CLT Test Scheduled for October 4
The next full Certified Landscape
Technician test will be held on October 4, at
Buckeye Ranch in Petaluma. The last day to
register is September 5. Applications are
available online at www.clca.org/clca/edu-
cation/certification.php, or contact the state
office at [email protected] or (800) 448-2522.
Certification is an international testing
program consisting of both written and
field problems. To become a Certified
Landscape Technician, an applicant must
pass every problem in the written and field
tests. Those who fail only have to retake the
problem missed (not the whole test).
Written exams are also available in Spanish.
CLCA has joined forces with PLANET
to offer five Core tests: Hardscape
Installation, Softscape Installation, Turf
Maintenance, Ornamental Maintenance and
Irrigation.
Spanish Version Available forWater Certification Test
CLCA is pleased to announce that starting
with the next scheduled written Water
Management Certification Program test, a
Spanish version of the exam questions will
be available for test takers.
The purpose of the new exam booklet is
to assist Spanish-speaking test takers who
may be uncomfortable reading the English
version. At their request, test-takers may
use both the English and Spanish version
when taking it. The intent is for those
individuals to use the Spanish version as a
backup in case they have trouble
understanding some or all of the English
questions.
The study guide and training sessions
for both the written test and the
performance program remain in English for
now.
For more information on upcoming test
dates or to sign up for an upcoming test,
click on the “Water Management
Certification Program” link located on the
homepage of www.clca.org.
I hope you are enjoying memorable times
with your family as we welcome the last
month of summer vacation. Hopefully,
you’ve had an opportunity to spend
some quality time, possibly away from
home, and are about to embark on the
preparations for the beginning of the next
school year. For those of you who have a
student who graduated, either from high
school or college, congratulations to your
graduate. The Auxiliary wishes them
much success in the future!
Locally it has been a bit quiet for the
Auxiliary this month. The Auxiliary
Potluck, hosted by Tanya and Jon Singley
will take place on Sunday, September 7.
You should have already received a "Save
The Date" email. This will be followed by
a proper invitation with all the details. If
by chance we don’t have your current
email address, please contact Lesley
Peters as soon as possible. She can be
reached at: [email protected].
Remember, you must be an Auxiliary
member to participate in the Potluck.
Therefore, if you’d like to join, please
contact Lesley Peters as well. She’ll make
sure you are properly listed as an
Auxiliary member and we will make sure
you receive an invitation to the Potluck.
I for one always look forward to this
event where we get together with our
spouses and significant others for an
evening of good times and camaraderie.
Plans for the Chapter Picnic are
complete, thanks to the able-bodied
leadership of Vivian
Rapp. I hope you’ve
marked your calendar
for Sunday, September
14th. Will you
participate in the chili or the dessert
competition this year? I certainly hope
so! It’s always fun to see what delicious
recipes are used and how creative the
desserts are…YUM!
The Holiday Party has been set for
Friday, December 5th at Van’s in
Belmont. Nanci Wilborn and her
committee are hard at work so our
chapter can celebrate the Holiday Season
in proper style. Please mark your
calendar now as December is a very busy
and hectic month.
Statewide, the Auxiliary put on a very
successful fundraiser at the Summer
Extravaganza in Park City, Utah. While
attendance at the Summer Meeting was
low, participation at the event was very
high and lucrative. Proceeds will be split
between the Auxiliary treasury and
LEAF. On behalf of the State Auxiliary,
I’d like to commend and thank the SFBA
Chapter for its participation in the
success of this event with a $100
donation. It is solely because of the
support of chapters like ours and
individual members like you that these
events are so successful. Thank you!
Enjoy the last of the summer!

The SFBA Chapter
board met on June 26.
The meeting was Called
to Order at 5:31 pm.
Roll Call
Kevin Burns, Rick Camin, Craig Rapp, Jim
Link, Mary Cohen, Barry Cohen, Michael
Gladden, Bob Kirtley, Julia Pollex, James
Walker, Nanci Wilborn, Frank Niccoli,
Michelle Gaspar, Maryanne Griese and
Constance Cook were present.
Minutes
The minutes from the May 2008 board
meeting were approved with corrections.
Motion made by Nanci Wilborn, seconded
by Frank Niccoli to approve the corrected
May 2008 minutes. Motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report
Jim Link presented the May 2008
Treasurer’s Report. He noted a net income
for the month of $4, 777.00. Motion made
by Frank Niccoli to approve the Treasury
Report, seconded by Rick Camin. Motion
passed.
New Business
The board discussed the new participation
points system which ranks contractors on
the CLCA web site, “find my contractor”
page. To encourage members to participate
in CLCA events and community activities,
the association awards members who
participate by enhancing their ranking on
this important consumer search tool. The
new system’s strengths and weaknesses
were discussed with most of the discussion
focused on the lack of points awarded for
past performance and service.
Craig reported that there is a state level
discussion to organize a coaching retreat for
all chapter presidents and president-elects.
He also reminded all attending that the
State trophy award applications should be
turned in by July 18th.
Awards CommitteeWarm congratulations and thanks were
given to Bob Kirtley for the fantastic success
of the awards banquet extravaganza June
14, at the University Club in Palo Alto. Bob
advised next year’s date for the banquet
should be changed to the week before
Father’s Day for better attendance. Bob is
creating an improved manual that can be
referenced by each year’s awards chairman.
161 people attended the function. Great
thanks were given to Craig for stepping up
to take over for Bob during his illness. Most
of the board liked the venue and thought
Lebo Neuman, Master of Ceremonies, was
outstanding. Bob wanted to also extend a
warm appreciation to all those who took
time to email and call about his condition. It
goes a long way to show the support of the
members of this organization, and what a
great group of people they truly are!
Membership
Rick Camin reported 5 new members for
May. Rick will write a new member
spotlight in the Bay Breeze each month.
Golf Tournament
Nanci Wilborn discussed the Golf
Tournament coming up at Spring Valley
Golf Course, Milpitas on Tuesday, October
7. She’s looking for prize donations.
Partner’s For Success
Constance Cook sought clarification
regarding the distinction between Partner’s
For Success and the Leaf Program.
Specifically, students at Foothill College
need clarification on the opportunities each
program offers students who apply. There
was also discussion regarding the timing
for student scholarship money distribution.
Women’s Auxillary
Mary Cohen reported that Tanya and Jon
Singley will be hosting this year's potluck.
The exact date to be set soon.
We are considering a Friday or Saturday
for the Holiday Party in December.
The Chapter made $1,852 (before
expenses) for LEAF at the Chapter Awards
Banquet Raffle. Details regarding how
these funds will be split within LEAF will
be determined at the October Auxiliary
Meeting.
Wendy Emeterio sent a letter on behalf
of the State Auxiliary asking for donations
for the fundraiser taking place at the
Summer Meeting in Park City, UT. Mary
made a motion to donate $100 to the State
Auxiliary fundraiser. Kevin Burns seconded
the motion. Motion passed.
Proceeds from "College Enrichment" go
to 3 colleges in our area: Foothill, City
College of San Francisco and College of San
Mateo. College of San Mateo has a floral
program, no contractor program. Frank
Niccoli has offered to teach hort classes in
the past and his offers have been declined.
He further stated that the decision to
specifically teach floral was made so as not
to compete with Foothill's program.
Discussion followed as to whether future
support of San Mateo should be
discontinued since it doesn't offer
contractor related classes.
The Auxiliary began discussions
regarding the possibility of changing
College Enrichment to a grant program
wherein the college would submit an
application with full explanation of the
purpose and use of the funds for review.
This way CLCA would know exactly
what/how the money will be spent before
awarding the grant. Further discussion will
take place at the October Auxiliary Meeting.
The Chapter picnic will be on Sunday,
September 14, at Cuesta Park in Mountain
View. Bring the whole family.
Chapter Events
The Women’s Auxiliary Dinner meeting
will be on Thursday, October 9. It will
feature a blind Auction (wrapped gift). We
are looking for donations for the auction.
Tom Ellington will be the auctioneer.
Resource Management
Michael Gladden reported on a new study
performed for the Power Outdoor
Equipment Institute. The study was
conducted by Dr. Ranajit Sahu, an
independent environmental and energy
he Board MeetsBy James WalkerT

expert and university instructor. The study
shows that responsibly managed lawns
sequestor, or store, significant amounts of
carbon, capturing four times more carbon
from the air than is produced by the engine
of today’s lawnmowers. The report and a
summary can be found at www.opei.org.
Michael reported that California State
License Board wants to partner with CLCA
to further discuss the effectiveness of the
unlicensed operator enforcement program.
Enforcement is most effective through a
sting operation along with publicity after
the fact. We are planning to have a dinner
meeting with CSLB.

waived for students who take the
sustainability course prior to the test. See
the state CLCA web site for more
information on this state certification.
The summer extravaganza participation
numbers are very low and CLCA will be
offering discounts soon. Free hotel rooms
and discounts are being offered to first time
participants.

the Chapter award winners will
automatically be eligible to enter the state
award competition next year. Chapter and
state applications will be uniform and
identical. Payment made to the state will
finalize the entry.
State Chapter Services
Michelle Gaspar reported that next years

Rick Camin reported that this year’s project
recipients want to offer a thank you party to
all those who donated their time and
recourses for their garden. Date to be
determined.
Student Club – Foothill College
Julia Pollex told us that she has been elected
to a second term as president of the
Horticultural Club.
Seven contractors came to speak to the
horticultural club about their lives and
experiences as a landscape contractor.

again, “TAKE ANOTHER PRACTICE
SWING.” He did. Silence followed. Then
the voice spoke out again. “PUT BACK
THE OLD BALL.”
Play It Where It Lies
Two longtime golfing buddies got to the
course one day and decided that today they
would play the ball where it lies... "No
matter what!" On the 14th hole, one of them
sliced his ball and it ended up on the cart
path.As he reached down to pick up his ball
to get relief, his friend said, "Wait a minute!
We agreed that we would not improve our
lies! Remember? No matter what!" The first
player tried to explain that he was entitled
to this relief -- that it was in the rules of
golf. But the second fellow would not allow
it. Finally, in disgust, the man went to the
cart and grabbed a club. As he stood near
his ball, he took a few practice swings, each
time scraping the club on the pavement and
sending out showers of sparks. Finally, he
took his shot. The club hit the cement again,
sparks went flying, but his ball shot straight
towards the green, landed and rolled to a
stop -- two inches from the cup. "Great
shot!" his friend exclaimed. "What club did
you use?" The man answered with a wry
smile. "Your 7-iron!"
New To Golf
The old perfesser decided one summer he
was gonna try his hand at golf. He got
hisself some of them funny shoes (ching!), a
pair of knickers and an argyle sweater
(ching, ka-ching!), and to top it all off, a
brand new set of clubs (ka-CHING!!!). Well,
off he goes, to the local country club.
Naturally, knowing that he can do anything
he sets his mind to without the help of
anybody else, he doesn't bother with
lessons from the club pro, or tips from
friends who've been at the game for
awhile...nothing. So, round about the third
hole (and the 64th swing), it was no
surprise to see the old perfesser pick up his
whole new bag of clubs and heave it right
into the water hazard - where his ball had
gone just moments before - and then storm
off the course. A few minutes later, though,
he came slinking back... he pulled up them
knickers past his knees, and went wading
in after the clubs. Everyone on the course
was just chuckling and such, figgering he
was gonna take them expensive new clubs
home, clean them up and prob'ly try and
get his money back.... However, they were
quite shocked to see him retrieve his car
keys from the pocket in the bag - then
throw the clubs right back into the water.
Golf For Couples
The husband reluctantly agreed to play in
the couples alternate shot tourney at his
club. He teed off on the first hole and
blistered a drive 300 yards down the
middle. Upon reaching the ball the husband
said to his wife "Just hit it towards the
green, anywhere around there will be fine."
The wife proceeded to shank the ball deep
into the woods. Undaunted the husband
said, "That's, OK sweetheart," and spent a
full 5 minutes looking for the ball, finding it
just in time in an absolutely horrible
position. However, he played the shot of a
life time to get the ball within 2 feet of the
hole! He then told his wife to knock the
putt in. The wife proceeded to knock the
ball off the green and into a bunker. Still

maintaining composure the husband
summoned on all his skill and holed the
shot from the bunker! He took the ball out
of the hole and while walking off the green
put his arm around his wife and calmly
said, "Honey, that was a bogey. That's okay,
but I think we can do better." To which the
wife replied, "Listen big-shot, don't get mad
at me, only 2 of those 5 shots were mine."
Sliced!
Harry teed up, addressed his ball and took
a magnificent swing, but something went
wrong and he hit a wicked slice. The ball
left the fairway he was playing, and went
onto the adjoining one where it hit a man
full in the face. He dropped like a rock!
Rushing over to the man, Harry and his
partner found him unconscious, and with
the ball lying between his feet. "Oh my
God!," exclaimed Harry. “What should we
do?"
"I'm not sure," said his partner. "But
don't move him! If we just leave him here
he's an immovable obstruction and you can
either play the ball from where it lies, or
drop it two club lengths away without
penalty."
Clubs At The Bar
Some golf clubs were having a drink in the
bar after a round. The bartender had served
all of them but one. So he asked him, "And
what would you like?" "Just soda for me,
thanks," said the club, "I'm the driver."
Long Life
A recent survey shows that of all jobs,
caddies live the longest. They get plenty of
fresh air and exercise, and if there's ever a
medical emergency, a doctor is always
nearby.
