Thank you to all those whoparticipated during the FREE

workshops and classes that wereheld during the School Holidays.

We had a GREAT turn-outfor our KRANK school holiday

workshops - which weresponsored through Logan CityCouncil.

The performance team put ona great show for Arcare Aged Carelast month - and even triedperforming long poi and tititoreafor the first time.

Sometimes we do not realisethat sharing our talents is one ofthe greatest services we can offerpeople. I believe the Arcareresidents would agree!

PERFORMANCE TEAM 3 AUGUST 2009

We have someimportant changeshappening for our FridayPerformance Team classes!

We are very pleased tosee numbers increasing forour Friday Night classes,but we need to make surethat everyone understands

the ORIGINAL purposefor Friday Evenings - wasfor the Performance Team.

We teach basics inTUESDAY &WEDNESDAY classes andFRIDAY is an advancedpaced class where we teachand go over routines for the

purpose of performing. Youmust FOLLOW ALONGand KEEP UP the best youcan. We encourage everyoneto come and follow along inthis class, but pleaseunderstand that we are not

TEACHING dance in thisclass - just routines!

We have been workingon Long Poi and Tititoreathis past month & will be

performing some of it at theCrestmead PCYC Opening.We have also been workingon a fun Tahitian piece toModern Music!

We will start raising ourexpectations with regards toperformances! We will haveonly those that auditionnumbers for us actuallyperform them - to set thebar higher forperformances! As anindividual as well as a group:You will ONLY PERFORMthe numbers that we feel

you EXCEL in!

We will expect the onesthat want to perform todance at classes as if you are

at a performance! NOEXCUSES!

We will be focusingon the ADVANCEDstudents for the last 1/2hour of class. Everyoneis welcome to stay andfollow along at theBACK of the class. We

will start with thefollowing girls, andwatch at classes for anyothers to move into theADVANCED category:

In Hawaii there

is a commontree in the forest

called the Ohia

tree, that is im-

portant in Ha-

waiian culture. It

bears beautiful

flowers called

Lehua blossoms.

Occasionally

these blossomsare yellow or or-

ange, but the

most

common

color is

red.

There is

a legend

associ-

atedwith the

Ohia

tree and

it's blos-

soms.

The Legend of Ohia and Lehua

One day Pele, the goddess of the volcano,

met a handsome young man named Ohia.She desired to have him as her sweet-

heart. He confessed that he already was

in love with another young girl, Lehua.

This enraged Pele and she used her

magical powers to transform the young

man into the ugly Ohia tree. Lehua was

terribly sad and pleaded with Pele to re-

turn the young man back to his human

form. Pele refused so Lehua begged the

gods to help her to be reunited with Ohia.Instead of changing Ohia back to a hu-

man, the gods transformed Lehua into a

lovely red blossom to adorn the Ohia

tree. Now when anyone picks a Lehua

blossom, it will rain because the lovers
