From The Seat of #138, Kawasaki STXR By: Susan Voss

If you had asked me a few months ago if I thought that I would be racing Women's runabouts with the Great Lakes

Watercross tour, the answer would have been..."yeah, right!" But thanks to the Bohat family selling me my STXR1200, it has opened up a whole new world of racing fun for me, getting my husband back into the sport and

reconnecting him with some old school racing friends like John Valek and Joe Bohaczek...after many years, and many kids.

We just finished races #4 and #5 at Pennoyer Park in Kenosha WI. The weather was perfect and the beach beautiful.

The turnout was great, for both racers and spectators. Even bringing a visit from "Jamin" Jamie Schulz "The Jammer"...1992 X2 LTD world champion!

As always, the race course was challenging yet a blast to ride, and Lake Michigan was reasonably calm. We like the addition of the pick up buoy...hats off to Scott Hyke for keeping everyone's safety his highest priority. We really like all

the cast and crew of the tour; they all do a wonderful job.

Overall a great race weekend for me....and the other racers from Oasis Performance Center. We all came home with several trophies, and I won a $100 Skat-Trak gift certificate. We are looking forward to race # 6 in Sheboygan...

See You All There!

Cheryl Friedl has been skating around area lakes on a Jet Ski for years, but she discovered a whole different dimension of the sport on Saturday when she showed up at the Pennoyer Park Beach for the Great Lakes Watercross races. Friedl, 46, of Kenosha, entered the event on a whim, after seeing a flier for the event. Minutes before her racing debut on Saturday afternoon, Friedl was bursting with appreciation for her newfound friends and knowledge of watercross. “These guys are so fun.” She said. “It’s kind of nerve-racking to learn the race and the course. Everybody’s helping me out because otherwise I would have been lost.” In her race Friedl started strong and stayed in the middle of the pack but some uncertainty with the course prevented her from finishing. She missed a buoy on the multiple laps and misinterpreted a referee’s flay signals. “He was pointing at me that I did something wrong. So that’s why I left the race.” She said afterward. “But he wasn’t (disqualifying her); he was just trying to tell me that I missed a buoy.” Nonetheless, Friedl said the experience was an invigorating one that she wants to continue. “It’s just really fun to go in and out of the buoys. Just for fun, not even to win.” She said. “I don’t really care if I win at this point. You don’t even feel that the water is freezing. It’s so cool. The racing event continues today at Pennoyer Park with the Practice beginner at 9:30 a.m. and the last race beginning at 1 p.m. For Jet Skiers interested in breaking into the racing circuit like Friedl, registration is 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. About 60 Racers competed Saturday, race director Scott Hyke said. This weekend’s event is part of the 2009 Great Lakes Watercross Tour, which made a stop in Pleasant Prairie in May and will complete its season in Sheboygan in two weeks. The buoy-marked course is about the size of a football field. As many as six or seven riders race at a time, tearing across the water at speeds between 50 and 70 mph, depending on the type of Jet Ski. “You got an old Jet Ski and you want to try it, you just come out and give it a shot,” Hyke said. “We’ve got classes for everything. Stock, modified out to the ying yang, young, old, we go from beginner all the way up to master classes.” Mike Waspi, 66, of Burlington, was one of the racers who helped Friedl with racing strategy. He has been racing about 20 years. “The only thing is that I’d like to see more senior because I’m competing against 20-30, 40-year-olds,” he said. “I’m OK. I’ve taken first places but it takes a lot out of me. I can’t party all night.” Paul Sucharski, 40, of Waterford, also got a late introduction into the racing. He’s been riding Jet Skis for 18 years, but didn’t enter his first race until 2006. Now he regularly participates in watercross events across the region. “It’s a good time, and it’s a little different than just going out and goofing off and riding.” He said. “It’s got a purpose. This tour is a good combination of some guys out having a good time and a few serious guys.” Dozens of spectators watched the races from bleachers and lawn chairs Saturday and didn’t seem to mind the complexities of the races. Dale and Maxine Bequette, a retired couple from Arkansas, were parked in lawn chairs on the sand and came to watch the races during a stop to visit family in the area. They are a lot of fun.” Dale said. “A lot of the starts are very exciting, and it doesn’t look like you have to be a macho man to win.” Sucharski said, however, the racing is harder than it looks. “You can watch a guy on a lake, riding a stand-up and making turns and say, “Wow that guy looks really good,” he said. “Put a buoy out and say, “Now turn here.” It’s very different when you have to turn right here right now, and there are waves coming here and there’s chop from this and the other guy’s jet is in front of you.
