Abdominal Imaging Faculty and Fellows at the 2010 Fellow graduation

Welcome to the fifth edition of the Fellow Follow-up. This time we turn our attention to our former fellows. Thanks to all of you who took the time to write a short note and send us a photograph. I’m happy to see most of you have retained your sense of humor. Hopefully, in a future edition we can get the rest of you to participate. As we all march towards the future, it's equally important to turn around and remember where we have been. We're pleased to see that you are all doing so well. In this issue, we introduce Tim Ziemlewicz and our new cohort of fellows. Tim has just joined us as a new faculty member this July. That brings our ranks to a total of 14. Our ranks have grown not only because of an increase in workload and new proce-dures, but also because of the growth of our research programs and success in grant writing. Our section is currently perform-ing research in the areas of CT colonography and tumor ablation among many others. Another change to announce: Louis Hinshaw is taking over as director of the Abdominal Imaging Fellowship. He replaces Fred Lee who has moved on to the role of vice chairman. Louis also replaces that tired Michigan spirit with a new positive Badger attitude. We hope you are having a great summer. If your travels bring you through Madison, please let us know. We are currently recruiting 2012 fellows. Have anyone in mind? Please direct them to our website listed at the bottom of the page.

Tim Ziemlewicz was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, MI. He ventured into the city for undergraduate at the University of Detroit Mercy and medical school at Wayne State University. Following an in-ternship in Ann Arbor he returned to Wayne State for residency. Thinking he could avoid winter he did an Abdominal Imaging fellowship at Duke University during a year with record snowfalls in North Carolina.

Tim is excited to return to the Midwest and join the Abdominal Imaging group. His primary academic interests are resident educational methods and hepatobiliary imaging. Outside of work he enjoys traveling with his wife Pam and he is a sports nut. He is able to combine these passions in a yearly trip to Las Vegas during the opening rounds of March Madness when his wife invariably gets more picks correct. Tim is also a life-long Michigan football fan who is happy to provide an additional punching bag while the Wolverines take a brief hiatus from Big 10 dominance.

Well, as the old saying goes, “There is only one constant and that is change”. The ad-ministrative demands on Fred have been consistently increasing and progressing to a higher level over the years and they have finally pulled him in completely. Since he doesn’t have the time to devote to the fellowship that he once did, he has asked me to step in. I must admit that I feel a little intimidated by the idea of taking over this fellow-ship. Fred has truly developed one of the best Abdominal Imaging Fellowships in the country and I just hope to be able to continue the excellence. I am thrilled about the opportunity and excited about the possibilities and relationships to be formed in the fu-ture. Please lend me a hand and provide me with any feedback/advice that you may have about why this is such a great fellowship and what I can do to continue the tradi-tion.

One very positive result of the switch is that during the morning fellow meetings, fu-ture fellows will no longer have to suffer through long discussions about how Rodri-guez is going to turn around the Michigan football program, or listen to hyperbole about an 8th grader who is going to lead Michigan to a national championship in 2017. We will now focus on truly important issues like; Bo Ryan’s recruit-

ing class of 2011, the nascent rivalry between UW and Nebraska, and how badly Wisconsin beat Michigan in football last year. Having sec-ond thoughts Fred?

This year has been great with another tremendously talented group of fellows. They are spreading out across the country after they are done with destinations in Idaho (Cody Boyce), Iowa (Mikala Brinkman), Michigan (Chris Buchach), Oklahoma (Jason Wagner), and New York (Larry Lee). I hope they will spread the word on how great it is up here. We had a wonderful year with this group of fellows and wish them all the best. I hope they will stay in touch as they enter the next phase of their lives.

This year will feature a small, but gifted crew of fellows. Two of our best residents will be staying on with us to get an-other year under their belt before heading out to practices in Wisconsin. One is an ex-UW cheerleader who is sure to bring some energy to the reading room (Paul “Be Aggressive” Stanton) and the other is one of those rare people who is known not by a single name, but by a single letter (Nate “Z” Zelinski). In addition, we will have a military transplant who is bringing along his better half to join our neuro group (EJ Borman) and a “pseudo-southerner” jock who knows what it is like to live where it is warm in December, but is still coming up to join us (Shelby Fishback). Don’t worry, we will have some cool nicknames for EJ and Shelby by the end of the year.

We are looking forward to another great year and hope this finds everyone healthy and well. Please drop us a line and let us know how you are doing and if you are in the area, drop in for a visit.

J. Louis Hinshaw

P.S. This summer is a year off, but the semi-annual Fishing Meeting will be back on next year (Summer, 2011) so if you need some CME (always a truly incredible line up of lectures), and/or a fantastic fishing experience, plan on joining us.

Nate Zelinski

Nate Zelinski, a Michigander by birth, was principally raised in Appleton, WI and hasn’t strayed from the Badger State since age 9. Following undergraduate stud-ies at St. Norbert College in De Pere and medical school at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, he decided to test the proverbial waters in Madi-

son. He completed his residency at UW and has stayed on for the Body Imaging Fellowship to pursue varied professional interests including image-guided-procedures, CTC, and body MRI. In his free time, Nate enjoys running, golf, and watching both college and pro-fessional sports. In August, he will be married to Laura Knauf, a sonographer for UWMF and a native of Marsh-field, WI. After fellowship, Nate plans to join the dedi-cated group of radiologists at the Marshfield Clinic.

Shelby Fishback is originally from Littleton, CO (go Arapahoe Warriors). Soccer took Shelby to SMU in Dallas for undergrad. Shelby then moved to Kansas City for Medical School and residency at the University of Kansas. She is married to Bo and they have two big lazy dogs, Dax

and Keener. She enjoys running, listening to live music (especially Kings of Leon) and traveling (most recently to the Galapagos Islands). She looks for-ward to becoming a better biker during her stay in Madison! Shelby plans to stay in academics and re-turn to KU Med following her body imaging fellow-ship.

Paul Stanton grew up in Manito-woc, WI. He stayed in the state attending the University of Wis-consin for his undergraduate and medical school years. After a 1 year hiatus for his intern year at Aurora St. Luke's in Milwaukee, Paul was able to return and con-tinue training at UW. Paul met his wife Brooke in Milwaukee

and they welcomed a daughter named Molly in February of 2010. Following fellowship, Paul plans to join the Gundersen Lutheran group in La Crosse, WI. Paul is an avid Badgers fan (and unrivaled Michigan hater). Many thanks to Fred Lee for still allowing him into the program despite their differences in team preferences.

EJ Borman grew up in Manitowoc, WI. He gradu-ated from Marquette with a B.A. in Biology and stayed in Milwaukee graduating from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2001. He completed his radiology residency at Penn State in 2006 where EJ met his wife Allison. EJ began his Air force commitment in 2006

with a deployment to Iraq but returned in January of 2007 stationed at Offutt AFB in Omaha, NE as a general radiologist. Allison and EJ have a 2 year old son, Fletch. They are excited to come back to Wisconsin although slightly saddened by the fact that the Huskers have returned with them to Big 10 country. Allison, having done her 2 year neurora-diology fellowship here, is returning as faculty to UW. After completion of the body imaging fellow-ship, EJ plans on getting a private practice job in the Madison area so they can settle here.

Fellow Updates

This spring we asked our alumni to send an update and a picture. It has been truly enjoy-able reading about your careers, families, hobbies and travels. Our alumni network stretches across the country and we hope that you feel more connected with each other and the UW by hearing of the suc-cesses and stories of your classmates and fellow alums. Thank you to all who con-tacted us and found a free moment to write us a note.

I'm in private practice in Fort Collins, CO. My group has 26 rads. We cover three main hospitals within about a 10-15 mile radius in Fort Collins/Loveland and numer-ous smaller regional hospitals and outpatient facilities extending into Wyoming and Ne-braska with a combination of scattered on-site days and remote reading from Fort Collins, and one full-time rad in Laramie, WY. We all generally subspecialize with our fellowship area, but still work as generalists, particularly with some of the out of town and the call coverage. It's a great group, very stable. Most of us only travel to other sites about a day or two a month. We do not use nighthawk.

Fort Collins is a university town with Colo-rado State University and has almost 130,000 people. It's a wonderful place to live. Colorado blue skies and great weather. We are right along the front range of the Rockies, about an hour north of Den-ver. Kyra and I have three children, Matt

age 10, Grace age 9, and Anna age 7, all adopted from Russia. Kyra stopped prac-ticing OB when we got Anna, but may try to do something part time in the near fu-ture.

I’m in Rhinelander working my tail off (12-13,000 RVU per year) until Tony Rut-kowski (‘10 MSK fellow) gets here. I spend

free time chasing my 2 year old, entertain-ing my 4 year old, and watching my 7 year old play sports (all boys). We are still hap-pily married! I try to get out fishing when I can. Politically I am on the Ministry Medi-cal Group Board of Directors and Techni-cal Director here in Rhinelander for MR/CT/US. One thing no one tells you - it gets harder when you leave your residency/fellowship! I do miss spending my days with the body department staff. Nothing better than sit-ting with your feet up drinking coffee and eating donuts as the colon flies by in 3D!!!

Here is a little summary about me and my practice. We have lived in Chapel Hill, NC since 2000. I went solo about 3 years ago and started "Strategic Imaging Consultants, PLLC".

With the help of one partner and several independent contractors we provide imag-

ing interpretation services for 3 outpatient centers on the coast of NC (Jacksonville and Wilmington).

I am currently recruiting a full time outpa-tient radiologist for Jacksonville, NC (no call, no weekends, no mammo, no fluoro,10 weeks off). In January of this year I started a teleradiology service and read for 5 other locations. The studies and reports are available via a web-based system with our server located near Raleigh, NC. I am planning to expand service to other states. In addition the server / PACS system could be utilized by other radiologists who are not interested in buying and maintaining a server.

We have 3 kids. My son finished his first year of college at ASU in Boone, NC. I have a daughter in high school and one in middle school.

My other passion is woodworking and I have converted to powerless tools trying to build "period" furniture. A few things I have built include two spring pole lathes, a 18th century roubo style work bench and a 4 post bed. Someone actually posted a video of me on the spring pole lathe during a tour of my shop.

Best memories from U of W: Imagining Fred having to wear a U of W jersey after a Michigan Game. Having the doors sto-len off my wrangler in December.

All is well in Marshfield WI. I am spend-ing time 50/50 between mammography and body imaging. I seem to be the go to guy for CT lung biopsy work and VC thanks to my experience at the UW.

One of the highlights from the last 2 years was the UW CME trip to Canada, looking forward to the next trip. On a different note, I am playing bass in a local rock band. Never to old to rock and do a little head banging.

I guess I was into hybrids early, as I did

a combo Abdominal Imaging/Nuclear Medicine Fellowship back in the 1988-89 era. I subsequently joined Radiology Associates of Wausau (WI) and have been there ever since. It is hard to be-lieve that it’s been 21 years since I was roaming through the CSC halls, tuning up my skills there, and trying out my resident teaching skills on anyone who would listen...as well as a few Cajun Martinis over at the Cajun Cafe (now Uno) off of Mineral Point Rd with my favorite mentor. Having completed several stints as De-partment Chairman as well as Corporate President, have passed the reins of power to the up and coming generation of Rads and am enjoying re-focusing on my clinical areas of US/NM/CT/Women's Imaging, and spending my free time back in Madison & Fish Creek, WI. After the last few winters here, however, I’m really thinking we all need a UW Alumni Cabo condo to escape snow & wind-chill during the winter-time.

Hope you are all well and are thor-oughly enjoying your Radiology careers as much as I am. All my best! PS: I’ve attached pics of before and after 20+ years of radiation exposure, night call, medical politics, and health-care reform discussions!

After Madison I moved to Augusta, GA in '95 and was staff at the VA across the street from the Medical Col-lege of Georgia, where Heide, now my wife, started her neurology residency. Working with residents and learning to speak Southern was fun - and a culture shock. I couldn't believe it when I learned that nuclear medicine gastric emptying studies were done not with eggs and toast but - with grits.

Randy Musack, MD ‘08

Donald M. Nowinski, Jr., MD ‘89

"Everybody don't like eggs", was the reasoning. After four years of no neuro, no peds, no women's imaging and very little MRI I joined a private practice across the Savannah River in SC, for fear of becoming a permanent and limited federal employee. A few years later I'm moved the wife and 9 month old daughter to Germany because of Heide's J1-b visa, which required us to leave the US. What a great experience for two years being our own group's nighthawk, working from my home in Dietzenbach, and learning to speak German. Reluctantly we moved back to SC in '06 where we plan on staying until we retire back to Germany. Currently I am chairman at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, 1 big hospital, 2 little hospitals, many offices and clinics, 700+ on medical staff, very large oncology service, and unfortunately a 100-bed ER that can order 100 CT's in a crazy single day. Our group, UCRad.com has 25 rads and service 6 hospitals. I'm into PET, and body MRI and marathoning.

Well, it's good to hear from the UW crowd - I have many fond memories of the people there, even though I was only there for one year, and that was 17 years ago!

I am part of a 25 person radiology group in the Kansas City area. We cover 4 main hospitals, and 3 smaller outlying ones, and also run an imaging center jointly with one of the hospitals. I work mainly at one of the larger hospitals (Olathe Medical Center), where I am the medical director. Professional life has been great! Olathe is in a growing area of KC, and the hospital has generally been interested in keeping up-to-date equipment, which has allowed us to stay on top of the latest in imaging. We have been hiring some excellent body imaging trained people (a few do come from out-side UW), and I am constantly being challenged to keep up with their knowl-edge.

My personal life also has been wonder-ful. I have been married for 10 years to my wife, Karen, and we have two boys (William, now 7, and Samuel, 5). The boys are a continual source of entertain-ment and amusement. Some day I hope we can all travel to Madison for a visit.

As you know, many Madison guys are up in Green Bay together including Nami Zarvan, Bob Tambeaux, Ian Sproat, Dennis Bielke, Josh Reibe, and Ronan Smyth. Tim Enright will be joining us in July 2011.

We cover St. Vincent and St. Mary's Hospitals here in Green Bay as well as Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette and St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboy-gan. We also provide interventional services at Bellin Hospital here in GB and cover Prevea Clinic as well. Our practice has continued to grow over the last several years and we currently have 15 members in Green Bay Radiology, SC, almost all fellowship trained includ-ing IR, neuro, MSK, body imaging, and nucs.

On a personal note, Aymee and I have four daughters, ages 14, 13, 9, and 7 who keep us very busy with volleyball and softball tournaments and dance competitions. Aymee also owns Sweet-pea's Children's Clothier in DePere. I spend a lot of my time golfing or at our cottage in Door County.

After finishing residency and fellowship at Wisco, we moved to Bettendorf, Iowa to start in practice. I joined Ad-vanced Radiology, S.C., which is a 14-person sub-specialty group that prac-tices in both Illinois and Iowa (Quad City region). We have started a fledg-ing tumor ablation program here and continue to fight the uphill battle of instituting screening VC! Maureen and I have two daughters; Lindsay (3) and Lauren (18 months). We have fond memories of Madison and the training program at the University of Wiscon-sin. I continue to look for that elusive flag football championship!! We live 40 minutes from Iowa City, which will be a nice drive home this year after the Hawks wax the Badgers!

We miss all of you and I am grateful for the training and friendships devel-oped from the department!

I am still working at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead Kentucky where I am now the Medical Director of Diagnostic Imaging. My wife Amy is doing well. She is currently working in a outpatient physical therapy clinic. We have two girls Allie age 7 and Emma age 3. They keep us on the go. They are both into gymnastics. Allie won 3 state titles in her age division and will be competing at nationals in Springfield in June. When I have time off I try to spend it at Cave Run Lake in pursuit of giant muskies. I am also building a cabin from antique hewn logs that my father and I reclaimed from some old log structures here in Kentucky. Hoping to finish the cabin this summer. Hope to see everyone soon. Tell everyone I said hello. Still hoping to make one of Fred's Canadian fishing adventures.

I’m currently a partner in a small com-munity practice with 4 other radiologists in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin with addi-tional coverage in several nearby small towns. We have a diverse practice and perform just about any kind of proce-dure or study except angiography. It’s

definitely a brisk pace and very reward-ing.

After growing up in Sheboygan I de-cided to return to the Wisconsin for my fellowship at UW after time in Milwau-kee and St. Louis for medical school and residency. I stayed in Madison after fellowship and moved into a new condo downtown about two years ago. It’s very convenient for enjoying the farmer’s market and events on the Square in the warmer months. In my spare time I enjoy boating, skiing, a little golf, reading historical fiction and non-fiction, and travelling.

My name is Sean Shannahan and I did my residency and fellowship at the UW from 7/98-6/03. I have worked just across town since then with Madison Radiologists S.C. It has been a reward-ing journey, all of it. I truly enjoyed my time at the UW and learned a great deal while I was there. It makes me laugh once in awhile be-cause I remember that Myron P. col-lected or kept radiology requests that were funny. I've had a few cross my path in the last seven years. One that comes to mind read, "Patient was hit by a dead cow." Of course this was at three a.m. while I was on-call. So I, trying to be somewhat funny, called the CT tech. and asked her, "How do you know the cow was DEAD?" She re-plied that it fell on him at a meat pack-ing plant... Anyway, I hope all is well with every-one. I have a six year old daughter named Maeve Shannahan who makes me very happy and proud.

Since I left Madison, I've been doing mostly emergency radiology with a private practice group here in Seattle. We cover a wide variety of hospitals across Washington which provides an interesting mix of cases. I'm slowly learning to love the rain and lots of coffee helps with this. In terms of hobbies, I've been trying to run a marathon or half marathon in all of the 49 great states of America plus Michigan.

Fellow Updates Continued

On my first fellowship day of CT at UW, I was reading an abdo-men and pelvis on a young man with abdominal pain. I had com-pleted 4 years of residency, recently passed boards and was ac-cepted to a prominent University fellowship, so was feeling pretty good about myself. The young man had a soft tissue density in his pelvis behind the bladder that caught my eye. I was impressed by the mass’ symmetry, nonetheless, he had pain and I found a mass. Bingo, almost. I presented my concern to Myron, staffing CT that day, who gently dismissed the mass as a “self-limiting” condition of engorged seminal vesicles that could soon change appearance. I attempted a quick recovery from embarrassment, and realized I was in a good place for the year.

I am currently in private practice with St Paul Radiology in the Twin Cities, and practice with Dr Matt Sanford, another University of Wisconsin Radiology Alum, and many other fine Radiologists.

Thanks to all who wrote us a brief update! Are we missing an update from you? Please send a paragraph and a picture to [email protected] and we will include it in our December issue.
