Traditionaland tasty!

SUNDAY is family day in our household, and every week the three of ushead out to dinner. This week we dined at The Parrot based in Cheltenhamtown centre – a venue largely renowned as a fantastic steakhouse. On arrival the first thing I noticed was how warm and relaxed it felt. We

were greeted by friendly staff who were more than happy to make us feelwelcome. The décor is beautiful and very modern and each table was laidout beautifully with a single rose as centre-piece, soft lighting and candles aroundthe whole room and relaxing music playing in the background was a perfectaddition to the whole ambience of the place.

Award-winning produceRoast on a Sunday is a must for us and today there was a choice of beef

or pork. I selected the pork whilst my husband and daughter opted for beef.Just like the great steaks on offer, all meats served at The Parrot are suppliedby the award-winning ‘Martin’s Meats’ based at Toddington. When the meal arrived you could see that great care had been taken in

the presentation of each plate. There was an excellent selection ofvegetables together with roast potatoes, glazed parsnips, yorkshire puddingas well as plenty of meat. Each meat came with its own jug of gravy and theyalso served a bowl of cheesy leeks to share. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and had a sweetness to themwhich

certainly helped when trying to get a fussy ten year old to eat her greens!

The potatoes were deliciously crispy and – with them being my favouritepart of a roast – they certainly didn’t disappoint. The yorkshires had beencooked and topped with a sprinkle of herbs and the parsnips glazed with honey.Themeat was cooked just as well – the beef was succulent, juicy and plentiful

and the pork was accompanied by crackling – which I find is a rarity in mostrestaurants these days. And if you are a lover of cheese, the cheesy leekswill be an added bonus to a dish already bursting with flavour. So, in short, If you’re looking for a great home-cooked Sunday roast in

a restaurant where you can relax, then the Parrot is ‘a must’. And, duringAugust you can enjoy two courses between 12-4pm on Sundays for only£8.95 (with the advertisement below). To avoid disappointment, bookingin advance is advisable.

Great lunchtime offerIf you enjoy dining at lunchtime on other days of the week, The Parrot

provides excellent value for money, without compromising service and quality. From Monday to Saturday you and a friend can enjoy any of the followingdishes and only pay for one of them: Steak & Ale Pie, Home Cooked Ham& Egg, Whitebait, Thai Red Chicken Curry, Homemade Spaghetti Bolognese,Classic Fish & Chips or Chicken Caesar, Mediterranean Roast Vegetable andSmoked Salmon Salads. To take advantage of this brilliant offer – all at only£6.90 for two – use the coupon on our Vouchers page.

A SUMMER signing from London Irish, GloucesterRugby prop Dan Murphy’s rugby career could havetaken a completely different direction had it not beenfor the advice of a coach at University.

Romford-born Murphy has spent his entireprofessional career to date with the Exiles, plying histrade in the dark and mysterious world of the frontrow.

However, taking a welcome break from therigours of pre-season training, the 25 year oldrevealed that he cut his rugby teeth as a rampagingback row forward until he was brought to earth witha bump, and the transition to front row forward tookplace!

“I was told I was too slow and too fat so, thereyou go, you’re in the front row by default! To be fair, when I was younger, I was told that you don’t choosethe front row, the front row chooses you.

“Obviously I loved my time at London Irish andI’m so grateful to them for giving me a chance and, ultimately, a career.

“I wasn’t looking for a way out or anything butwhen there are two dominant players, including thecaptain who’s an All Black, who are in favour then it’sdifficult to break through.

“It was part of my reasoning for leaving butsometimes you just need a fresh start. I’m out of mycomfort zone here, I’m settling into a new area, starting with a clean slate and I’m looking forward tothe challenge.”

That challenge, of course, involves trying to buildupon a 2010-11 campaign when Gloucester finishedthird in the Aviva Premiership and won the LV= Cup.To his credit, it’s something he’s anticipating keenly.

“Teams always say that they want to do onebetter than the year before and, for Gloucester, onebetter is the final. Every team wants to be there, that’swhy you play rugby. This team won silverware lastyear and still wants to better itself and I want to bepart of it.

“It was an easy decision and, when Gloucesteroffered me a contract, I jumped at the chance to bein this type of environment. And, after I’d signed, Iwatched on and saw them reach the semi final andthat made me even more hungry to be here.

“I’ve always said that stadiums like Kingsholm aresuch good places to play your rugby. You get such agood atmosphere, a huge crowd and it’ll be nice tohave them cheering for me for once!“I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a great rugby citywith a strong rugby culture and I can’t wait to run outat Kingsholm. It’s going to be a great feeling andhopefully I can show what my scrummaging can doand a little bit extra as well.”

Gloucester Rugby have kindly given us 5 pairsof tickets in the C&G Stand for their firstPremiership home game against WorcesterWarriors on Saturday, 10th September – kick-off 3pm – for lucky readers to win.

To enter the draw, just send your name, address and telephone number to: WarriorsDraw, The Local Answer, 1 UllenwoodCourt, Ullenwood, Cheltenham GL53 9QS.Closing date: Wednesday 17th August 2011.

H.H. Martyn & Co. will be a familiar name tomany Cheltenham residents. Founded in 1888the company became one of the town’s majoremployers for much of the twentieth century.During the First World War the company wereemployed in making aircraft parts on militaryorders which became the firm’s main projectduring that time.Following the war, the company had to begin

to take in other projects to keep them afloat. These new plans were on a wide range ofvehicles and always demanded the excellentcraftsmanship that the firm was renowned for.One such project was called the ‘Golden Arrow’– the name for the monster car which in 1929,driven by Sir Henry Segrave, captured the worldland speed record.H.H. Martyn & Co. were commissioned to

make parts for the vehicle which had a 930bhpengine, much larger than most modernsupercars. At the time a car with such powerwould have been almost beyond belief. Yet inspite of that, the car was created, with significanthelp from a company based in our very owntown. The company continued to make specialised

car and aircraft parts following this project, andalso began fitting out ocean liners such as theRMS Queen Elizabeth. Such was their reputationand success that in 1934 they were acquired bythe London furnishers, Maples. In 1971 decliningdemand caused the firm to cease tradingalthough it remained in existence beyond that.In today’s world of major multi-nationals it is

hard to believe that a small local firm would havebeen selected in such an important role for theland speed record – yet this was the reputationH.H. Martyn & Co. held throughout its existence.Just one great example of the influence‘Cheltenham’ has had on national events.

Most recent arrival – CupidBorn on 11th May, reindeer calf Cupidis the newest arrival to be celebratedat Prinknash.Cupid is so cute, and the only

reindeer calf in Gloucestershire, sodon’t miss this rare opportunity to takesome stunning photographs of thelittle reindeer and her attentive parents.

Don’t forget the rest! There are so many beautiful locations and enchanting

characters to see and meet at Prinknash Bird & Deer Park, and it’s the ability to get so close to all the creatures – andfeedmost of them – that ensures people return time and again. As well as the extensive collection of waterfowl and

peafowl eager to feed fromyour hand, there’s the tamefallow deer, pygmy goats and,of course, the famousPrinknash reindeer – Rudolphand Prancer.Situated in 9 beautiful acres,

the bird and deer parkprovides an array of fantasticexperiences for all ages. Whileit is in contrast to many of themodern day, adrenalin-fuelledattractions, it delivers wonderful excitement in a gorgeous, natural environment – and it just keeps getting better!Prices for both Teal (£80) and the Mad Hatter’s Marquee

(£130) include entry to the park. For further information orto book your special event at Prinknash Bird & Deer Park visitwww.thebirdpark.com or telephone 01452 812727.

FOR decades Prinknash Bird & Deer Park has been awonderful, tranquil destination for children, parents andgrandparents to enjoy beautiful gardens and meet a varietyof wildfowl and other critters eager to make friends – and itjust keeps on improving. In recent times, and in particular the last 12 months, owner

Melanie Meigh has enhanced the experience for visitors byintroducing new features and friends which simply add to thepark’s great charm ...

Teal – the Gypsy CaravanMelanie came up with the idea of ‘Teal’ when she was lookingto create a truly original location where families could book

a child’s party with a difference. Theauthentic caravan is delightful and hashad a great deal of attention paid to thelittle details that make all the difference.Teal is situated between two aviaries

nestled in a clearing. It’s a beautiful spotwhere a complete study area hasbeen created for early learning, andthere’s plenty of space for all to enjoy. You can reserve Teal for children’s

parties throughout the year – seatingup to 14 children and 2 adults inside.A unique venue for the perfect party!

Toffee & TreacleMiniature donkey Treacle and hermum, Toffee, proved a smash hitwith visitors from the outset. Thisadorable duo love all the attentionthey can get – just like all the otherfriends you’ll meet at Prinknash.Just like the visitors, Melanie loves

to spoil her creatures too. Shemade Treacle a very smart rug tokeep her warm last winter and, witha bit of left-over fabric, produced anew fashion accessory – “the ’must

have’ outfit for a miniature donkey” – which Treacle proudlyshowed off on visits to Stroud and Cheltenham.

Mad Hatter’s MarqueeAnother superb venue for that specialevent is the Mad Hatter’s Marquee, introduced earlier this year and situatedin the main enclosure by a stunning pool. With scenes from Alice in Wonderland

depicted on huge canvas hangings, themarquee is a magical place to creatememories for all your invited guests. There is enough room to seat up to 30children.

Paradise Prinknash just gets better and better

This walk climbs quite steeply to Fish Hill,it then levels off as you walk along the topof the scarp slope of the Cotswolds towardsBroadway Tower where you are rewarded byuninterrupted views over the surroundingcountryside.A Use the car park off the B4632 Stratford road.Walk east along the High Street and out of the villagefor ½ mile (1km) to a public footpath on the left, justafter Broadway Waterworks.B Cross two stiles to pass under the A44. Crossanother stile, bear right and continue following thewaymarks uphill to the road.C Take the path opposite into the wood, turning leftover the stile. Where the path splits at the top, turnright and, at the next junction, turn left. Follow the pathto climb up the steps to the road.D Cross the road (A44) to follow the Cotswold Waythrough the wood to a gate. Continue along the grassypath to the Tower.

1 The Tower occupies the second highest pointof the Cotswolds at 1024 feet (312m). The extensiveview covers 13 counties and includes the BlackMountains, the Malverns, the Clee Hills, and theWrekin. It was designed as a folly by James Wyattand built in 1799 by the Earl of Coventry for his wife.It is 55ft (17m) high, constructed from a non-nativestone and remained in private hands until 1972.Since then it has formed the centrepiece forBroadway Tower Country Park. If you are looking for a way to reduce symptoms ofstress and many other conditions, Reflexology can bea great help. I went along to see Kerry Baxter atCheltenham Reflexology & Massage to experience thetreatment for the first time.

I found it to be extremely relaxing and was shockedthat Kerry was able to tell me that my tummy would startto gurgle – which it did – and, by applying pressure topoints on my feet, she knew I had been suffering withextreme hayfever symptoms and headaches.

Kerry explained the treatment was a complementarytherapy that improves circulation of the whole body, thereby encouraging vital nutrients to travel toappropriate body systems more effectively. Reflexologyalso helps to remove waste products from the body thatmake us feel generally unwell, tired and sluggish, andmany people find it stimulating.

If you suffer from hormonal issues, migraines, or backpain, it can be a great help in relieving your symptomsby improving blood and nerve supply to muscles, andmen can also benefit greatly from the treatment. If youare having trouble conceiving, Reflexology has beenshown to be helpful too.

After the treatment I could easily have fallen asleep –I was so relaxed. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience– Kerry was very friendly and knowledgeable and Iwould definitely visit again. In fact, I would have thetreatment every week if I could!

Kerry also specialises in massage, and pregnancymassage, which can naturally help the body get readyto deliver. Why not visit Kerry’s website (below) to readsome fantastic testimonials and get a better idea of howyour well-being could be improved.

August at last – a month of sun and holidays formost of us with school-age children. Well perhapsnot so much of the sun!If you are going away ...This is the month that the climbing beans you have plantedneed regular picking so as not to stop producing. If you aregoing away, entreat a neighbour orfriend to come in and helpthemselves (and then they canwater them as well!) Pick anycourgettes before you go, even ifthey are way too small becausethey will be the size of marrowswhen you get back! Put any pots of plants into a shady spotif you are away for a few days and stand in paddling pool withan inch of water or so if you have one to keep them going.Strawberries and raspberriesNow is the time to cut-back summer-fruiting raspberry canessuch as ʻGlen Ample or ʻMalling Admiralʼ as their harvestshould be over. Cut them down flush with the soil to stop pests

and diseases taking over and topromote new canes to grow. Peg downthe runners of strawberries to createnew plants either in the ground or intosmall pots of potting compost like johnInnes No.1. Peg them down using u-shaped bits of wire – wire coat hangerscut up work well. Keep them watered

and when they have rooted cut the stem holding them to theparent plant and replant in a newly prepared strawberry bed.Plant late flowering perennialsThis is the time of year that the garden can become a littleboring. Sometimes a garden is really pretty in spring and earlysummer but loses its ̒ oomphʼ by August. If this describes yourgarden you can do something aboutit by popping in some Annuals fromthe garden centre. They are full ofdelicious looking pots of Cosmos,Zinnias and others which willbrighten up a tired border. Thinkabout planting some of the laterflowering perennials such asEchinacea purpurea (the mauvecone-flower), Rudbeckia (a lovely yellow daisy), and Asters(the good old Michaelmas daisies) which will flower well intoautumn and come in colours that look stunning in the earlyevening light, and early mornings covered in dew.Keep your roses under control

August is the time to tidy up climbing andrambling roses after they have flowered. If they are grown over arches or pergolasthey can be a real hazard if their shootsare too long and whipping around in thewind. The shoots should be pliable whenthey are young and are best trainedaround supports in a spiral fashion whichencourages the most flowers. The mainpruning will be done in February but thisis just to keep them under control.

Have you ever sat there thinking to yourself just howcomplex the idea of turning green could be? No,I suspected not, as I hadn’t until recently.Green is the colour of change, generally for the

better. It means go at the traffic lights and is usedfor the super hero when the Incredible Hulk burstsfrom his shirt. Perhaps more subtly it is theprincipal colour of camouflage as we changefrom visible to unseen.Green is good news in the sporting sense too.

We golfers aim to land our ball on it; a racehorsethat is getting used to race conditions is often saidto run green and will ultimately change for the better. But it’s the environmental

question about turning greenthat is the big one. Thegovernment, businesses, councils and increasinglythe public are picking up onthe environmental issue and‘thinking green’. There are still manysceptics, but you have only to look at theextremes of weather that we haveexperienced in the last couple of years to know thatsomething is going on.Noticeably the coalition government, which has

been cutting costs left, right and centre, hasretained its green plans, including the GreenInvestment Bank and the Green Deal. We are allexperiencing changes to our rubbish disposalroutines, with re-cycling now part of our daily lives.Businesses will need to take the lead in the battle

to reduce carbon emissions dramatically. It willinvolve some significant investment, technologicaladvancements and serious changes in culture andattitude. Many businesses have already recognisedthe need and have begun to make those changes. For the rest of us, we need to be committed too

and embrace the changes. Remember, they aregreen and therefore for the better.

AS I write this I am just thinkingabout a meeting I am going to thisafternoon with regard to the newuniversity students who will becoming to our town in the autumn. This meeting will be with otherofficers who cover the north of thetown and with the university whowill have student unionrepresentatives and universityrepresentatives there. This is justone of the numerous meetings Iattend throughout my workingweek with our partners to try andensure, as much as possible, thatwe cover all the eventualities forthings that happen in this town.Meetings such as this happen on afrequent basis around the town and beyond and I thought it might be anidea to highlight to you just some of the things that your local Policing Teamget up to apart from the obvious in an attempt to keep you and yours safefrom harm.

This meeting was arranged by PCSO Ross Nichol who is the singlepoint of contact that the Police has with the university, a liaison officer if youlike. This gives my organisation and the university the confidence andpracticalities of a good working relationship and tends to prevent smallproblems becoming big issues and allows a better sharing of intelligenceand information. It is clear that when we don’t have these type of linksthen problems always seem to develop whereas when we have goodrelationships then all seems quiet. Fresher’s week as it is known starts onSunday 18th September.

Anyway, at this meeting we will be discussing all the things that canand sometimes do happen to an 18 year old who is new to a strangetown and is usually their first time away from home as adults.

We will discuss their security because quite often they come preparedwith a new laptop and phone which our local thieves would love toconfiscate. They come with lots of money (initially anyway) which our localpublic houses would like to have a part of and we have a plan to make surethe students enjoy themselves but are aware of their responsibilities andthat the pubs and clubs are also aware of their responsibilities. Clearly, thePolice have a large role to play in this with extra patrols at night to ensureno anti-social behaviour and to ensure responsible partying on all sides. This is usually a very testing time for your local police teams and for theuniversity as issues that would not normally be an issue raise their headssuch as trying to find the campus after a night out.

In some ways this week has similarities with race week with lots of‘new’ people to the town who are trying to enjoy themselves andsometimes they get a little over excited which sometimes makes the localcommunity a little grumpy about unruly behaviour. This is where the Policeand the university work together to ensure a smooth and quick transitionfrom young student in a strange town to adult student who feels part ofthe community, after all it is clear that many students who initially comefrom other parts of the country actually settle in Cheltenham aftergraduating.

I am off to this meeting now and please rest assured that we willcontinue to try and plan for future events and occasions to keep our townsafe from harm which in turn inspires the highest levels of confidence.
