On a number of occasions over the past one hundred years, All Saints’ has been poised for a significant change with the start of a major new ministry. Examples that come to mind are constructing the new church building, starting the day school, and establishing Santa Lucia chapel and campground. At such times many members might not even have realized that a major change for the better was about to take place.

Once again we are travelling around an historic corner that opens onto a new horizon. This time the significant new beginning is the Festival of Christian Spirituality, taking place at the end of September. I want to prepare you for this milestone and encourage you to participate in this new ministry, either by attending or by helping to offer hospitality to participants. The following questions and answers can help you decide how to get involved.

Q What is this new ministry?

A The ministry is two-fold, comprising the Center for Christian Transformation and the Festival of Christian Spirituality.

Q What is the Center?

A The Center for Christian Transformation offers the festivals and also provides a means for those who have participated in a festival to stay connected with each other, either as a whole or in smaller, self-selecting units. The center also provides continuing resources and a forum for conversation and prayer. The primary medium of the center is the internet. By mid-August the center’s website, www.CCTCarmel.org, will be operational.

Q What is the Festival?

A The festival is a weekend gathering designed to create a Christ-centered and Spirit-inspired community in discernment, celebration, and prayer around a theme relevant to our lives and to the wellbeing of society. We will be invited to open ourselves to the Holy Spirit in order to perceive society and our own role in the world from the perspective of Christ. We will ask the Holy Spirit to ignite the bush that does not burn so that we, like Moses, can be changed. We will ask God to

heal our false divisions and help us recognize ourselves as God’s agents in the world.

Q Who are the speakers? Who will be bringing us insights and wisdom?

A Because the transformative dynamic of the festival is the Christian community in the presence of the risen Lord, the leaders serve more as facilitators than as experts offering wisdom. Thus, by design, there are no “big name” speakers. In fact, there will be no formal lectures or addresses.

Q If there are no lectures or inspiring addresses, what should I expect?

A The festival will include worship that is both traditional and contemporary. It will feature the spiritual discipline we are calling conversatio. It will provide time to learn and practice other spiritual disciplines from the great tradition of the Christian Church, and time to both listen and pray. It will include music and even a concert. The five meals include an informal bistro-style meal and a banquet.

Q Other than the invisible Holy Spirit, who IS leading the 2012 Festival?

A Leading the festival and facilitating the conversatio sessions are the Rev. Rick Matters, Nancy Collins, the Rev. Canon Jesus Reyes, and others. Facilitating the other spiritual disciplines are the Rt. Rev. Mary Gray-Reeves (meditating on Holy Scripture), Beth Lefebvre (Christian yoga), the Rev. Penelope Duckworth (poetry as prayer),

the Rev. Wendy Smith (praying before icons), and others.

Q What is conversatio?

A The Vulgate translation of the Bible uses conversatio when Paul writes about the Christian’s way of life. St. Benedict incorporated this word into his monastic rule to describe both a way of life and a spiritual discourse for discerning God’s will for a specific decision. Conversatio is a spiritual dialogue in which participants seek to discern God’s voice or perspective while reflecting on a specific topic or question.

Q How can I learn conversatio in such a brief time?

A There will be a master session that everyone can observe, as well as small group and plenary sessions in which everyone can participate. Before these conversatio sessions there will be brief teachings, and afterward we will reflect on the process. The center will provide continuing instruction and opportunities to practice and reflect.

Q How is the festival relevant?

A Each festival has a theme that addresses both our personal spirituality and our engagement with the world. We hope to free the Gospel from a Sunday-only limitation, inspiring us to embody the risen Lord in our local environments and permitting the Holy Spirit to reconcile and heal the fragmented and polarized perspectives of our lives. The festival is both non-political (in terms of ideologies and specific political or theological

solutions) and, at the same time, radically political (in terms of Gospel impact on social structures and lives of individuals). The festival serves as the holy ground from which people are sent home to respond to specific callings.

Q Who will attend the festival?

A We expect to welcome a combination of parishioners, local residents, and people who travel from distant locations. The festival is suited to Christians of any denomination, and to those considering or exploring the Christian faith. It is expected that people will set aside personal ideological or political agendas in order to form a community and to receive a deeper divine perspective.

Q Why does the festival cost $245, but not even cover the cost of accommodations?

A The 2012 Festival is funded by the fee of $245. At this time we have no underwriters, although our goal is to have such underwriting in the future (many foundations will not fund a start-up ministry). The fee covers the five meals and the concert ticket, some overhead expenses, and funding to provide accommodations and meals for some of the guest participants who will facilitate a portion of the festival.

Q What makes this event a festival, rather than a conference, workshop, retreat, or revival?

A Over the five years of discerning and planning this new ministry, we have perceived that God is calling into existence something unique. The name festival communicates to us

a joyful celebration of the love of Christ that is filled with wonder and reverence.

Q What can I expect to take home from the festival?

A First of all, you take home yourself, rather than solutions. We pray that the festival will stimulate a continuous new beginning that you will incorporate into your life. We hope that you are inspired to make a difference in your own local environment. Second, we hope that you will take home the ability to facilitate conversatio in your own church or other group. Third, we pray that you will discover, or rediscover, additional spiritual disciplines that you will continue to practice at home and maybe even teach to others. Fourth, we hope that you will choose to stay connected to other participants and/or to tap into the continuing resources of the center. Finally, we hope you will be inspired to tell others about the festival, both in words and by the example of your choices, and encourage them to attend a future festival.

Q If I’m not attending the festival, how can I help?

A Robin Reyes, who is coordinating the production team for the event, would love to welcome you as a volunteer. If you are able to offer accommodation to a participant, please let us know.

Sermon Series

Fr. Rick will offer a series of sermons in September on the prayer of consecration. This series provides another way to offer an instructed Eucharist, and is intended to deepen our understanding and enrich our worship.


our Worship

Spread the Word about the 5:30 p.m. Service

All Saints’ presents three liturgies on each given Sunday: the 8:00 a.m. Rite I; the 10:30 a.m. blended Rite II with choir and band; and the 5:30 p.m. contemplative service. I am making an appeal for our parishioners to spread the word about the beautiful service for all ages at 5:30 p.m.

The 5:30 p.m. Mass is presented in a quiet and contemplative environment. Soft piano music is emphasized, with understated hymns and service music, all under candlelight. The first Sunday of the month features our choir and organ in a presentation of Evensong at 5:30 p.m. Beginning in September, the third Sunday 5:30 p.m. service will feature our new Palestrina Ensemble, with a focus on unaccompanied singing, and literature from the Renaissance and the Baroque.

Tell your friends, and come enjoy beautiful music and liturgy in a relaxed and contemplative setting at 5:30 p.m. on Sundays.

Summer Choir, Chancel Choir, and the Palestrina Ensemble

The four Sundays of August will feature our annual Summer Choir. No experience is needed, and all are welcome. Each week we sing an easy anthem, with a rehearsal at 9:30 before the 10:30 service. All are invited to sit with their families and friends in the pews, then come up and sing the anthem in street clothes. If choir is not something you normally do, then this is for YOU!

Regular weekly choir rehearsals begin for the Chancel Choir on September 6, 2012, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the music room. Thursday rehearsals will be from 7:00 until 8:15 or 8:30 each week. September 9 will be the first Sunday that the Chancel Choir returns to sing at the 10:30

service for the season. New members are welcome and no auditions are required.

Our new Palestrina Ensemble will present music for the first time on September 16 at the 5:30 service. This choir is only open through audition. If interested in giving audition, please contact me at [email protected].

Please tell your musically inclined friends, as this group is open to all from our community.

All Saints’ Singers are Moving to All Saints’ Church

On September 6, 2012, the All Saints’ Singers will begin rehearsals. One big change for this year: we are moving our weekly rehearsals to All Saints’ Church from All Saints’ Day School. The day and time will remain the same: Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The reason for the move is practicality: the church is where they eventually sing on Sundays, and our space is available during the week, so we will routinely rehearse here to help create an even flow from rehearsals to presentations (note that these are not performances). Our structure will use the music room, Seccombe Hall, and the chancel.

Volunteers are needed to pick up students from the day school and transport them to the church – if interested, please e-mail me at [email protected] or call the church office.

Evensong, August 5th

The Evensong Choir will be leading our service in song directed by Dr. Todd Samra, on the eve of the Feast of the Transfiguration. The music will feature the works of composers Jacob Arcadelt and Alec Wyton.

Centennial Birthday Party

The Rev. Chuck Stacy (who served under Fr. David Hill) will celebrate and former rector Carl Hansen will preach at the 10:30 a.m. service on August 26. The liturgy will be followed by the complimentary luncheon.

Many people have already signed up to attend this joyful event. If you plan to attend the lunch you must make a reservation, so contact the office or sign up at the back of the church on Sunday.

A Lovely Time at Santa Lucia

Campers arrived as early as Wednesday and some left on Sunday afternoon. The weather at All Saints' Santa Lucia Campground and Chapel couldn't have been more lovely. The flowing river provided brave campers a refreshing swim and a break from the sunshine. At night campers gathered around the campfire to roast marshmallows and sing campfire songs and classic folk music from the 60's and 70's.

Then on Saturday afternoon many more members arrived to enjoy the Annual Parish-wide Eucharist and BBQ. If you missed it this year, we hope that you will join us next year, and invite a friend.

Adult Formation for Faith

Throughout the month of August, Fr. Rick will lead the Sunday morning Bible study series based on the lectionary. Participate in the discussion. Dig deep into each passage to learn its meaning for daily living today, and discover why the message was relevant to the original audience.

You are also invited to join the Wednesday morning Bible study group every week from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., participating as you are able. The group is now studying the Book of Acts. Bring a study Bible if possible. This class is led by Greg Troxell.

Women’s Retreat: Saturday, August 11

“Go and get the rain: God’s women of courage” is a free all-day women's retreat led by Mother Cynthia. It will be held at the Santa Lucia Campground in Big Sur from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, and will be followed by a communion service from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The day will include lunch brought by the participants, various presentations, and time to be silent in the beautiful redwoods or walk along the Big Sur River in the company of others who are striving to be God’s women in our world. Family Faith

Parents involved in the Family Faith Conversations enthusiastically favor having their children participate in the liturgy on Sundays. This summer Maria is offering children's Sunday school, as well as nursery for our younger members and visitors from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Each Sunday you will find special bulletins ("The Sunday Paper" and "The Sunday Paper, Jr.") for younger and older children at the back of the church.

Living the Faith More Fully

Those who attended the spring Monday class asked Fr. Rick to teach a series on prayer and the spiritual/mystical traditions of the Church. You are welcome to deepen your faith by participating in the upcoming

Monday evening series. Each class will include 1) conversatio on the Gospel of St. John, 2) contemplative prayer, and 3) a discussion on Isaac the Syrian, a 6th-century mystic. We will meet Mondays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the library, from September 10 to November 12. Contact Fr. Rick for further information.

CSUMB Campus Ministry

Fr. Rick is working with Fr. Jon Perez and Deacon Joan Anderson to establish a campus ministry board to oversee and support our ministry at CSUMB. If you are interested in campus ministry or have experience with Canterbury Club ministries and would like to get involved, please contact Fr. Rick.

Teaching our Children

Tracy Haack tells how important her Godly Play experience has been over the past several years. She will teach again this school year, before moving on to other areas of ministry and learning. Opportunities to Serve

Are you looking for a way to express your talents, build new friendships, and serve others? Consider joining a ministry team or perhaps leading one. Here are some opportunities:

Festival Production Team - Join a volunteer team to serve during The Festival of Christian Spirituality on September 28–30. Some roles have tasks to complete prior to the event. Please contact Robin Reyes through the parish office to learn more.

Altar Guild - Prepare the church altar for communion and tidy up afterward. The schedule is flexible. Contact Valerie Warren through the church office.

Welcoming Team - Welcome visitors and members on Sunday morning and introduce them to other members and leaders after the services. Contact the office to learn more.

Youth and Family Service Day

Join us August 18 for the next Youth and Family Service Day at Dorothy's Kitchen, Salinas. We will be preparing and serving lunch for 175 people. Taking a Collection During the Liturgy

An integral part of the Eucharist is collecting the gifts offered by the congregation. The gifts include the bread and wine, along with the monetary donations. These liturgical actions are not just a means of financing the ministries of the parish, nor do they represent a collection to pay for the service. Rather, giving is the essence of the Eucharist, and, in fact, the Eucharistic prayer is called the Great Thanksgiving. In this liturgy God generously bestows the Holy Spirit and Christ continues his once-and-for-all sacrifice on the cross. We respond by once more giving our bodies and souls to Christ. We also give of our labor in the form of money and by volunteering our time. All of this giving makes the Eucharist a transaction of love.

Planned Giving Ministry

We will soon begin a planned giving ministry at All Saints’. With the parish adopting a new investment policy and the Foundation Trust Fund board agreeing to serve simultaneously as the investment committee of the vestry, we are in an excellent position to begin a year-round ministry of planned giving. Our centen-nial marks an excellent time for members and friends to remember All Saints’ Parish in our wills or estates.

All Saints' Food Pantry

The food pantry is running smoothly.

Hans Lehmann is making preparations for the loading and distribution of about one hundred food boxes before Christmas. You can help if you can coordinate the donation of 100-150 matching boxes that are no more than 1-1.5 c.f. in size. Please speak to Hans if you have a source. His number is 831-624-0540.

In June we provided food bags to thirty-eight households, helping ninety people in total (fourteen children and twenty-five seniors). Another twenty-six men were provided hospitality and lodging via our support of I-HELP.

Sponsored Fast

For thirty hours, four of our youth and two chaperones fasted in order to raise money for the Sierra Service Project mission trip to McDermitt Nevada that three youth will be attending from July 29 to August 3.

During the fast, the youth experienced hunger, while learning more about themselves, their relationship with God, and poverty. They saw pictures and heard the words of impoverished sharecroppers in the United States during the great depression. They played a poverty simulation game where they took on the role of

subsistence farmers in West Africa struggling to feed their families and escape the trap of poverty. They explored their hearts and sought God’s forgiveness. They affirmed each other’s gifts. They spent time in prayer and reflection, and they wrote letters about their experience to the

event sponsors.

The fasters were tired and hungry, but were surprised that they were able to endure the time, knowing that it was for a purpose and that they would eat again. When the much-anticipated “feast” to break the fast was revealed to be plain white rice and tomato soup, the fasters were still grateful. The ingredients for the feast, rice and cans of soup, had been used earlier in the poverty simulation game to represent the commodities being grown and purchased.

The fasters would like to thank the congregation for your prayers and support for this experience!

the compassion of Christ by offering

sustenance to those in need.

Called to Serve

Greg Troxell is offering an all-day workshop on August 11 in Seccombe Hall. The interactive workshop, Strengths-Based Ministry, will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. Registrants will be provided a code allowing them to complete the Professional Dynametric Profile (PDP), a resource Greg has used to help churches and individuals throughout the USA to discover their strengths, leverage their talents, and prepare for ministry. Greg has been licensed to administer PDP since 1994 and has recently been asked to coauthor additional materials with the company's founding psychologist, Dr. Bonnie Bass, who heads the company's division for consultants worldwide.

Saudi Arabia and the lives of men and women there. When writing about men and women in Saudi Arabia, it's easy for western writers to slip into a patronizing or judgmental tone. Author Ferraris'never does this. She respects each character and the dilemmas they face. She shows how it's common and even acceptable to break some of the rules, if it's done discreetly and for good reason. This compelling mystery depicts the challenges of living in a closed, devoutly Muslim society and the effect those challenges can have on members of that society.

When sixteen-year-old Nouf goes missing, along with a truck and her favorite camel, her prominent family calls on Nayir al-Sharqi, a desert guide, to lead a search party. Ten days later, just as Nayir is about to give up in frustration, her body is discovered by anonymous desert travelers. But when the coroner’s office determines that Nouf died not of dehydration but from drowning, and her family seems suspiciously uninterested in getting at the truth, Nayir takes it upon himself to find out what really happened to her.

The All Saints’ Book Club regularly meets in the church library the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. The review leader/presenter brings lettuce for a salad, and the other participants bring something to add to the salad or food to share.

The family of newly baptized Maya Esperanza loved the 8:00 a.m. liturgy and the welcome they received from that congregation. They asked to receive the Patter in digital form each month so they can stay in touch, and are looking forward to their next visit.

By popular demand, the youth group will begin meeting every week, starting October 7. For August and September, youth group will continue with the old schedule, the first and third Sundays of the month following the 10:30 a.m. service (11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). At youth group we have team-building games, Bible study, singing, and discussion of life and spiritual topics.

God Outdoors: Youth Camping and Hiking Program

The youth group went on a camping trip to the Santa Lucia Campground in Big Sur. Seven youth and three adults enjoyed camping, swimming, playing games, hiking at Andrew Molera State Park, and appreciated the wonder of God’s creation.

The next event in our summer camping and hiking series is a day hike at Point Lobos on August 6. We will meet at the church at 10:00 a.m. and return by 2:00 p.m.

October 19-21: Diocesan youth camping trip at Santa Lucia Campground in Big Sur.

Invite your relatives, friends, and neighbors. Sixth to twelfth graders are welcome.

Summer Mission Trip

Three middle school youth and Robin Denney will be going to McDermitt, Nevada, as part of the diocesean summer youth mission trip with Sierra Service Project. They will be doing home repair and learning more about life on the Paiute Shoshone Reservation. They will depart Saturday July 28 and return August 3. Please pray for the mission team!

South Sudan Mission Trip

Robin Denney, our youth leader and former missionary to South Sudan, will be traveling to South Sudan in September for three weeks. She will be visiting several dioceses in Western Equatoria State, and putting on an agriculture workshop with pastors in Ezo diocese who have recently returned to their land after four years of displacement from attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Robin would appreciate your prayers for a safe and fruitful journey, and for the people of Sudan and South Sudan.

the Business of the VestryDuring its July meeting, the vestry discussed several aspects of the balcony project. We will authorize a contract for repairs and improvements of the balcony upon recommendation of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. The vestry also approved temporary use of excess income from Santa Lucia as seed money for the All Saints’ wine project. These funds will be paid back by April 2013.

Improvements Underway

The Godly Play room is enjoying a facelift, with a new coat of paint and a new rug. We’re getting the room ready for another fun year of Bible exploration by our younger members.

We hope that you have located the votive candles in their new home at the front of the nave. Feel free to light a candle when you come forward for Holy Communion, or at other times. We are contemplating replacing

the hymn board on that side of the nave with the carved wooden plaque that currently hangs in the baptistery. If you would like to voice an opinion about this move, please contact Fr. Rick or design committee members Susan Britton or Charlyn Brown.

In the back of the church you will find a photo of Mark Adams’s artistic concept for the baptistery. Notice how much nicer the space already looks with the excess furniture removed. The walls will be repaired this month in preparation for the arrival of the Resurrection tapestry by the late Mark Adams.

The Gift of Poverty and Abundance

When we separate the one divine gift of poverty and abundance, our life is fragmented and we become distracted and anxious. When we lose touch with the simplicity and satisfaction of true poverty and true abundance, we find it difficult to respond to the needs of others. Jesus is the perfect example of the reconciliation and integration of poverty and abundance. He possessed everything, but owned only one coat. With the poverty of a few loaves he fed many, and in the poverty of his broken body he continues to feed the world.
