R ecently, the issue of shopping local has been weighing heavily on my heart. So I’d like to take this opportunity to share why supporting local businesses is so important.

First, there are the reasons most of us are aware of: saving money on gas and keeping tax dollars here. At gas prices upwards of $4/gallon, I know we can all appreciate savings on fuel. Running your errands and shopping around town is much easier on your gas tank than driving to Sacramento or San Francisco for a shopping trip. Regarding tax dollars- as we all know, now it is more important than ever to keep our tax dollars here in San Joaquin County.

But it’s not just about the money (although it’s important!!). Supporting the community you live in means so much more. It’s about doing business with people you know. It’s about being out and about where you live. When you’re shopping in your neighborhood grocery store, you’re seeing people you know and are connecting with them. You’re helping to keep Stockton, Lodi or whatever city you live in, a place where people have real relationships with one another.

When you shop local, you’re helping to provide jobs for our citizens. In Lincoln Center alone, more than 800 people are employed throughout our 100 stores…and that’s just one of our county’s many shopping centers!

This issue is so important to me because my life is so affected by local business. Without our Center’s hard-working merchants, I wouldn’t have this job that I love. And I know many of you out there reading this feel the same way. Like most of you, I understand the convenience of online shopping and the fun of making a day trip to the City. But my motto is SHOP LOCAL FIRST. And I challenge you to make that your motto as well….to make an effort to BE LOCAL. If everybody reading this did, it would make a huge difference.

Conqueringthe School Year Swells

A s the last waves of the summer wade up the shore, kids aren’t exactly bounding at the sight of the school year approaching. School is about to break the surface and it’s time for your kids to crack open the books again. Education being a deadly sea beast may be an exaggeration, but for many kids surfing the learning curl may not be as easy a trick to tackle. It can be hard for kids to get back into the scheme of learning, especially when the summer left their minds sun burnt. And for some, catching up and getting back into the swing of things may be something they need a little help with.

For years the Sylvan Learning Center has been doing precisely that. Through support programs and subject tutoring, they have helped kids

come back up to their proper learning grades. Finding one on one tutoring can seem like a dream, but here it is reality. Sylvan helps students in all ranges of their education and in a significant realm of subjects. Math and reading are the most prominent areas in which kids find their need. The six teachers at the Lincoln Center Sylvan provide guidance in focusing the students and motivation that builds confidence.

Tracy, a six-year director at Sylvan Learning Center, sees improvement with all kids when they make their final walk out the

door. One of the more inspiring cases she remembers is of an 8th grade boy who came to them reading no better than at a 2nd grade level. Being in and out of school due to disabilities and heart problems, he didn’t have much chance to keep himself afloat in his overwhelming circumstances. Once he began tutoring at Sylvan, he dedicated his time and focus. In over a year, he was reading at a 5th grade level. The teachers at Sylvan could be nothing but proud!

Besides the help offered in single subject classes, they also supply

students with a few programs. The Homework Support Program is one of the most populated aids they administer. The tutor gives help specific to the student’s education at school and in his work, effecting how he feels about school. Now, Sylvan is offering two new programs: a SAT Program preparing students with practice and strategy; and a Back to School Program helping the kid’s organization, time management, and note taking.

Sylvan’s assistance provides a change in the vision of school and the progress of education. With the tutoring and support Sylvan’s kids will have smooth surfing in the school year ahead. The Sylvan Learning Center welcomes your kids back to school so enjoy the last swells of summer!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to our wonderful models for this month’s cover! We had such a blast capturing lots of smiles and laughs as the children played at the Lincoln Center Kid’s Court.

On the left, Kindra Nunez of Zuesters is pictured with her daughter Izabella (Bella), and her niece Addyson (Addy) Pijl. Addy is the daughter of Adam of Payters Grill and Amy Pijl. To the right, Lisa Azevedo of State Farm Insurance- George Azevedo’s Agency, holds her son Brendan Roby. Bella, age eight, loves to dance, play softball and basketball, play with her cousins and swim. In fact, she just won multiple gold and silver medals last month at the City Swim Meet! Addy, age four, loves to swim, dance, sing and smile for the camera! Brendan, age two-and-a-half, is interested in pirates, rocket ships and his girlfriend Daisy Duck!

Thank you to the Lincoln Center boutiques who provided us with clothing. Kindra is dressed in a top and jeans from Zuesters. Lisa’s jeans and blouse are from FINA. Brendan and Addy are wearing clothing from Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique and Bella is wearing a school uniform from Zuesters.

The Kid’s Court, which is sponsored by St. Joseph’s Medical Center, is located between Artesian Natural Foods and Podesto’s Market, Deli and Bakery. It is made up of structures resembling our local produce: cherries, grapes, asparagus and tomatoes. Bring the kids to play on the fun fruit and vegetable shaped structures while you take advantage of our complimentary wifi!

School Bus SafetyBy George Azevedo, State Farm Agent

A s summer comes to a close and the leaves begin to turn, children across the country are packing up their backpacks and returning to school. And with the beginning of the fall semester, you may start to see that old familiar vehicle – the school bus – cruising the roads and highways again.

Here are some tips for drivers who share the roads with school buses, as well as some easy lessons to teach your kids about bus stop safety.

D R I V I N G N E A R B U S E S Follow these tips to help protect the children when you drive.

good enough reason to speed, and it’s downright careless when there are children nearby.

All states have laws that tell you under what circumstances you can and cannot pass a stopped school bus. Most buses actually have stop signs that display when children are getting on and off the bus. In general, it is not okay to move until after the bus’ red flashing lights are turned off, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins to move.

The National Safety Council (NSC) recommends children should:

Story Time at Sassy Pants

With a passion for literacy and reading in the home, Angela Scannavino Karp, owner of Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique came up with the idea to host Story Time in her store. Children and their parents have a blast listening to stories and enjoying snacks. Angela finds wonderful readers for her books, including teachers and her Aunt, a retired reading specialist. Story Time at Sassy Pants is always exciting! Each time there is a theme…for Easter, Sassy Pants hosted an Easter egg hunt, and in June, Batman and Supergirl made an appearance for superhero training! In December, Angela even had Santa’s elves read to the kids.

Children of all ages are welcome to attend. This summer, Story Time was held weekly on Wednesday mornings. You can catch the last Summer Story Time, which is a Back to School Party, on Wednesday, August 1st at 10:30 am. This fall and winter, Story Time will be held once per month. The next one will be Saturday, September 22nd at 11:00 am. For a complete schedule, visit their brand-new website: www.shopsassypants.com.
