Planet Ultra operates the event and they have lots of rules. The one that worried me most was the time limit, 18 hours. In addition to carrying a 3-liter water bladder, the pack had room for extra clothing, lights and food. Part of my training was minimizing time off the bike. Every time you stop–to eat, change clothing, refill water containers– you’re not moving. Duh! That adds time to the ride– and too much time means no credit. Credit was important, because my real goal was to complete three double centuries this spring. That would certify me as an “elite long distance bicyclist” and winner of the California Triple Crown. It’s a lovely place and peaceful, evocative of a time 100 years ago when southern California was citrus groves and small towns. After weeks of warm weather, Saturday was forecast to be the coldest day of the year with rain. Sure enough, the streets were wet when I went outside at 4:30 a.m., bundled up and ready to ride. A group of us opted for the early start at 4:45 and, after a Planet Ultra briefing, we were off. It took about 30 minutes for the group to sort itself out with me off the back and riding alone. It was not raining at the moment but the air was cold and I saw streaks of snow on Santiago Peak. Planet Ultra set up five control points for the riders, with refreshments, water and clipboards to check riders’ names. I carried my own food so I stopped only long enough to check in. Rain began to pelt us at 8:00 and I thought, “This is going to be a long day.” It stopped an hour later, though, and never rained again the rest of the day. continued on page 15

SLO COASTER AUGUST, 2012

The following email note was sent to Stu and Janie Goldenberg from Sue Cleland. Sue and Ron were camp hosts at Morro Strand. Sue rode with the Tortoises and SLO Pokes and rode her first Century at a Lighthouse Pre-ride. Hi there, it is so good to hear from you! Ron and I are doing well. I am envious of your biking club - the club in Lake Havasu City is way beyond my skill, as most of the guys are at 20-25 mph. So you really do have a great thing going - I miss you all! Ronnie is feeling well, although he picked up too much furniture and developed a small hernia at the surgery site. So now he is banned from picking up anything, although he manages to pick up his metal detector anyway! I have been bicycling a lot, as I have been training for Ragbrai. Putting in 120-150 miles a week right now. Started training while we were at San Clemente, trained in the extreme heat of Lake Havasu in May, then we moved to South Dakota where I have been training at 5,000 feet and on lots of mountains. Monday we are moving to the Sioux Falls, SD, area, where I expect to be training in high humidity and heat, although the hills won't be bad. I just hope my body doesn't forget all these lessons and I do well on the Ragbrai trip. I think my biggest concerns are strong headwinds all day and the energy to go day after day. Are you guys thinking about the Mickelson Trail? I biked 30 miles of it the other day with some friends; so beautiful, an amazing trip! I think you would really like it! I find the Black Hills have changed a lot in the last two years, as the pine beetle has devastated huge tracks of forest, especially around Hill City. It is very dry here and fire is a huge danger right now, as those "bug trees" are just waiting to ignite. In the two weeks we have been here, there have been 2 significant fires. Breaks my heart. Well, hope to see you guys down the road - I keep hoping we can get back to SLO and see you all. Until then, happy trails!

Sue

MINUTES OF THE SAN LUIS OBISPO BICYCLE CLUB GENERAL MEETING

San Luis Obispo Library Community Room995 Palm Street, San Luis Obispo CA

Thursday, July 5, 2012 7:15 PMsubmitted by Craig Armstrong

Vice President Roberts called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM.

Vice President Roberts thanked Kathleen McHugh and Mike Metzger for serving as greeters and Kathy Cohon, Becky Robertson, Alston Paff, Tom and Marti Roberts, and Chuck and Susan Atlee for providing refreshments.

The minutes of the June 7, 2012 meeting were approved (MSC:Broome/Cohon).

Vice President Roberts noted that the club had received a thank you from the Cayucos Elementary School District for the club’s donation to the school.

Chris Broome reported that the club has paid out $50,000 in donations so far this year and that club assets had increased to $275,000 as the result of the receipt of Lighthouse registration fee and clothing sale revenues.

Kathleen McHugh gave a report on the Lighthouse pre-ride date and timetable.

Samantha Pruitt advised members that the Central Coast Cancer Challenge would take place August 5th and that the funds raised would go to two local cancer support groups.

Kathy Cohon noted that there would be several rides of different lengths on July 14th to raise funds for ALS. In lieu of registration fees, funds would raised through donations by ride participants.

Ernest Cole noted that a number of Lighthouse volunteer positions are still vacant and need to be filled. Also, volunteers planning to attend the post-ride brunch must sign up for the brunch on the club web-site.

Vice President Roberts reported that Frank Mullin was home from the hospital and on the road to recovery from his accident.

Dr. Sandy Sachs gave a presentation on the causes of certain types of injuries, aches, and pains and urged members to participate in a variety of exercises in addition to cycling and to follow a sensible dietary program.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:20 PM.

SLO COASTER AUGUST, 2012

MINUTES OF THE SAN LUIS OBISPO BICYCLE CLUB BOARD MEETINGAIR POLLUTION CONTROL DISTRICT AUDITORIUM

3433 Roberto Court, San Luis Obispo CATuesday, July 3, 2012 5 PM

Board members present: Tom Roberts, Dave Abrecht, Craig Armstrong, Chris Broome, Martin Howell, Bob Lindquist, Tim Long, Kathleen McHugh, and Ken Price. A quorum being present, the meeting was convened.

No one reported a conflict of interest with any agenda item.

Bruce Collier and Bob Young were present as guests. Mr. Collier noted that Morro Bay High School will be starting point for the Lighthouse but that there was no budget provision for a scholarship contribution to the school. Chris Broome advised that $4,000 had been budgeted for unplanned contributions. After discussion, the board approved a $2,000 contribution to Morro Bay High School (MSC:Armstrong/Abrecht). Mr. Collier also noted that he had received calls regarding the use of the proposed Creston Community Center instead of the Creston Elementary School for the start of the Wildflower. Tim Long gave some background information on the situation in Creston and noted that the conversion of the old firehouse into a community center is a work in progress.

Mr. Young noted that voting for the jerseys for the century rides was done at the post-ride volunteer lunches, thus excluding input from other members in the jersey selection process. He also suggested that consideration be given to inviting art students at local high schools to submit design proposals. Chris Broome noted that Will Benedict was working on revising the jersey selection process in order to allow for wider participation by club members in the voting for jersey designs.

The minutes of the May 1, 2012 meeting were approved (MSC:Abrecht/McHugh).

Vice President Roberts noted that the club had received a thank you from the Cayucos Elementary School District for the club’s contribution.

Chris Broome reported that club assets as of July 2 totaled $275,000, which includes the registration and clothing sales income from the upcoming Lighthouse. Mr. Broome noted that the costs of supporting the century rides has been going up, and that the ride budgets would be reviewed as part of the budgeting process for 2013.

Craig Armstrong noted that the Tribune had a front-page article regarding the financial impact of the SLO Marathon on the local economy and suggested that SLOBC consider doing a similar analysis.

Mr. Lindquist reviewed the status of the proposal from the Bike Coalition to offer discounted membership fees to SLOBC members. The board discussed various ways to publicize the offer and to distribute the special coupon code required to obtain the fee discount (SLO Coaster, SLOBC website, email, etc). Chris Broome will follow up with the Coalition regarding concerns on unauthorized use of the coupon code by non-members.

Mr. Broome advised that there was a question as to whether volunteers using their personal vehicles to transport items to rest stop locations should be reimbursed for mileage. The current policy limits mileage reimbursements to SAG drivers and course markers (excluding mileage between their home and the ride start). After discussion, the board agreed not to expand the current policy.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 5:50.

The Evolution of the Aerodynamic Helmet

By Stu Goldenberg

I readily admit to reusing the following comic. It was originally drawn to make fun of our overzealous attempt to communicate, especially on a tandem bicycle. I choose now to put it together with a different story. Last month was Janie and my forty-seventh anniversary so we led a ride to honor that event. The ride was forty-seven kilometers. I am doing my best to move this country into the nineteenth century, someone else can work on getting us through the twentieth and maybe even introduce us to the twenty-first. After all, how many of us have a foot that is a "foot" long? Our normal modus operandi when leading a ride is to ride our single bicycles and carry walkie-talkies, with one of us near the front and the other in the back as a sweep. When we are not the leaders, we prefer to ride our tandem. That way I can get Janie to propel us up the hills. In reality, our daughter often manages to call Janie's cell phone while we are struggling up some long hill which greatly diminishes Janie's efforts pedaling. We don't know how our daughter knows when we are climbing a hill, but apparently she does. On our Anniversary Ride, we did bring our walkie-talkies but unlike the illustration, asked a fellow rider to sweep and carry the walkie-talkie to let us know if there were any problems. I don't recall that we ever heard from the other walkie-talkie which could either indicate that there were no problems or he couldn't figure out how to use the little machine

Thank You (Part 1)I want to thank the many club members who have been so kind and supportive to me since my recent trike crash.   Offers of food, transport, dinners, shopping, you name it.  I have received four trips to LA in support of my surgery.   I've been fed in bed, had my wounds dressed with tender care, and had many nights out to enjoy the company of friends.I just saw the doctor yesterday (Monday, July 16) and he was very pleased with the x-rays of the surgery.   They removed the 50+ staples in my shoulder (Sue Lyon has a photo if you're curious), and sent me home to begin some gentle physical therapy.   They also warned me to be patient as the recovery period may stretch out to 6-12 months.   But I can now take a shower again, so you have to enjoy the progress you're making. But what brings me the most joy is the time I get to spend with you guys.   Thank you so much.

Frank

Indulgence Ride 2012By Will Benedict, Ride Coordinator

This year's Indulgence Ride will revisit an old route with some twists. We will do an edited version of the  Greenfield to Carmel ride in reverse. The ride will start in Carmel Valley Village and climb through forests and fields before the long decent into Greenfield. By riding in this direction, the climbing will be more gradual and often shaded and the afternoon decent will provide great views across the valley with the sun at our backs. You can see routes and profiles using the links provided below.

There is also the possibility of a 35 mile route from Spreckles to Greenfield that takes you through the farmland north of Greenfield with 1000 feet of climbing. This route could be offered if there is sufficient interest.

We will travel to and from the ride on a Silverado Bus. The ride will be supported with a SAG vehicle that will setup a stop about every 10 miles for snacks and a break. After showering in Greenfield, I am looking for a location and caterer in the Paso Robles area. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Reservations: Send me an email at [email protected] the route you are most likely to do.

Participants:Initially limited to 47 SLOBC members on a first-come first-served basis with a waiting list.

Advocate’s Report by Dave Abrecht

Green Bike Lanes Come to San Luis Obispo!

The intersection of California Blvd. and Monterey St. has undergone a "face-lift" of sorts that should improve cyclists' safety in that specific area. The City of San Luis Obispo, citing a high number of collisions involving bikes, has painted the bike lanes on California Blvd. a bright green color.

According to a city media release, "the green colored bike lanes will mitigate potential traffic congestion between vehicles and bicycles by creating a clearer designated path for cyclists, improving bicycle lane control and visibility, and adding intersection lane extensions for cyclists traveling straight across Monterey St."

Green lanes are a relatively new concept in this country but are proving to be valuable way to distinguish bike lanes for cyclists and motorists alike.

Now that green lanes are an approved option in the Cal-Trans Highway Design Manual, it is hoped that our city and county public works departments will enhance and improve existing Class 2 on-street bike lanes by painting them green.

Three foot passing law up-date The full state Assembly will vote on the three foot passing law this month (August). It is anticipated that the law will be approved and sent to the Governor for signature. Our local assemblyman, Katcho Achadjian, listened to his local constituency and voted in favor of the law. I'll keep you posted; it appears the three foot law will become a reality in California.

SLO COASTER AUGUST, 2012

Presidents Message from page 1 I followed a group of riders through San Clemente and suddenly we were riding on Pacific Coast Highway past San Onofre in bright sunshine and life was lovely. Beyond Control 2, we went through Camp Pendleton on a bike path, then jumped onto Interstate 5 and rode the shoulder to Oceanside, buffeted by a burst of tail wind every time a truck passed. Turning inland, we followed the San Luis Rey river to old Highway 395 and Control 3. Then Planet Ultra put the hammer down. They had us climb a thousand feet on the east side, then come back and climb a thousand feet on the west side. Then we descended into Temecula and rode through the streets to Control 4. After that it was downhill back to Yorba Linda. So I thought. Planet Ultra somehow found an uphill route to Lake Elsinore.

It was dark when I arrived at Tom’s Farm, Control 5, at the north end of Corona. I put lights on and rode through several miles of road construction into downtown Corona. Somehow I had missed a turn. The street ended at a tee intersection and I had to decide which way to go. As I turned right, a group of riders whooshed by, turning left and disappearing up a hill. I followed them, reasoning that only Butterfield nuts would be out this time of night. We crossed the freeway and jumped onto a bike trail and pretty soon we were back in Yorba Linda, whizzing through dark streets to the finish. Gail met me at the Planet Ultra motel room at 8:00 p.m. with a congratulatory hug for completing phase one of Triple Crown. I checked in, made sure I got credit and told the crew we would see them at Solvang.
