  • I am so excited to be moving toElgin to begin my tenure atCongregation Kneseth Israel. As

I write this, we are beginning to prepare forthe High Holidays, which call us to re-evalu-ate our lives and make changes. This is a bigchange, a big transition both for my familyand me and for the congregation. It is excit-ing. It is bittersweet, as we leave long stand-ing relationships in Massachusetts. And it isa little scary. For all of us.

Thank you to everyone who, from themoment I arrived at O’Hare, have made mefeel welcome. Thank you for sharing yourpride in your community, your joys and yourconcerns, and your hopes for what CKI canbe. Thank you for opening your homes andyour hearts. I have enjoyed breakfasts,

As I start my second year as CKISisterhood President, I want tothank EVERYONE who has vol-

unteered upteen times for numerous proj-ects and events, and those who helped andguided me this past year! We had a lot ofups and downs, but I am encouraged by thesupport and generosity of our CKI commu-nity. We managed to get the kitchenexhaust system and the kitchen freezer fixedwithout going into the red! THANK YOU!

Our June meeting was held at the ElginPublic House. It is good to support our Elginbusinesses. We approved our 2012-13budget, and, along with our usual business,we decided on a few new fundraisers for thenew year, and enjoyed a delicious meal.

The Garden Walk on July 17 was informative. It is interesting to see how the hot, dryweather afffects native vegetation and localwaterways. We had three husbands (allamateur gardeners) join us, too!

Part of what drew me to Kneseth Israel wasthe profile written by the search committee. It clearly articulated CKI’s vision, which I havelearned was worked on over the period ofseveral years. My vision of what a syna-gogue can be dovetails with what I read inthat very first document. I am excited aboutthe opportunity to work with a congrega-tion in partnership to build a communitythat wants to recognize the diversity of itscommunity, provide life long learning, andopportunities for meaningful observance. Those pillars mirror the roles of traditionalsynagogues for millennia.

My vision includes being an active, visible, participatory rabbi. One who works in con-

cert with the committees that already exist, the ritual committee, the education commit-tee, the social action committee, the visioncommittee, and the 120th anniversary com-mittee. I already know that there are thosewho embrace change and those who arenervous about it. Change will not happenovernight. It should not. Change shouldcome over time after listening to each otherand reaching consensus. It is a process andpart of what excites me about coming toElgin. Join with me in the process. Send mean email, drop by the office, meet me forlunch at your favorite Elgin lunch spot. Tellme your visions and dreams.

This is the vision statement that CKI hasdedicated itself to:Congregation Kneseth Israel is a sacredJewish community striving to meet theneeds of our congregation through:

    # Meaningful Observance

    # Lifelong Learning

    # Embracing Diversity

    # Building Community

The Vision Committee is very excited as CKIcontinues to evolve and embrace this Visionthat was adopted by this congregation overa year ago. Over the summer many volun-teers are hard at work planning for the manyactivities of 2012-2013 that will bring ourpillars to life. Our new Rabbi, RabbiMargaret Frisch-Klein is in full support of ourVision and is looking forward to partneringwith us as we continue to embrace ourvision and our pillars. This is a very excitingtime for our congregation. We are on thecusp of celebrating our 120th anniversaryand we are developing new ways to meetthe needs of this diverse community. Ascommittee plans unfold, we will do our bestto keep this congregation informed. TheVision Committee continues to review theinput of the congregation in order to makerecommendations that will keep CKI ontrack with the Vision Statement. CKI hasbeen successful for over 120 years by

respecting our rich traditions and evolvingas necessary to embrace the needs of thecongregation. Change can be challenging. But this congregation has asked for change.Be assured that many, many of CKI’s tradi-tions will remain in tact. As new things areimplemented, try them, we hope you will bepleased. The Vision Committee will continu-ously review the congregation’s opinionsand try to adapt our recommendationsaccordingly. It has been over two yearssince the Vision Committee sought congre-gational input through focus groups, sur-veys and individual meetings. Thatcongregational input is framing the future ofCKI. Following are some of your words, telling us what you want in your synagogue. We are confident that we are heading in awonderful direction that continues to bebased on your opinions. As always, pleasefeel free to share your thoughts with me, orany of the CKI Board members or volunteers.I look forward to seeing all of you asSummer turns to Fall and the High Holidaysarrive! But for now, enjoy what is left ofSummer, keep watching HaKol and CKIemails for announcements, and please be anactive member of the CKI Family!

    VISION COMMITTEE REPORT

    You all said it best:

“I think we need to be broader andmore inclusive. I think that we are theonly show in town, sure you could go20 miles, but because we are the onlyshow in town, we have to offer oppor-tunities for a variety of interests, a vari-ety of Jews. Whether in school or inworship. I just don’t think we can anylonger say, “This is what we are, take itor leave it.”

“I may not like everything, but I will gowith what we need”

“Make me feel good about my religion, about my synagogue, get me excited.”

“It’s an underlying attitude we need tochange if we want to survive. “

“I felt people were put down for havingdifferences of opinions, or wantingsomething different”

    (Judaism) “Feels like home”

“I am short, old, Jewish. It just is. It ispart of who I am.”

“It’s a family, a support network, through good and bad times”

    “It’s a family and a community”

For Rabbi Margaret Frisch Klein, thedream of becoming a rabbi, accordingto a note that her eighth grade teacherwrote, began with her Bat Mitzvah. A collegeSimchat Torah celebration was so full of joyand life that she called her parents and toldthem she wanted to be a rabbi to bring thatkind of joy to other people. While her par-ents recognized her teaching and leadershipability, they did not understand the religiousdream. They imparted their passion aboutJewish history and ethics, the will to survive, and the peoplehood of Judaism.

Her dream of being a rabbi took a back seatas life intervened. Although always active inthe Jewish and wider community, she wasn'ta rabbi. She worked as the educationaldirector in four Hebrew schools and as amarketing consultant for high technologycompanies. She married. Together with herhusband, Simon, they raised a family, owneda business, worked on social action issues, studied Hebrew, and had late night conver-sations about God.

The dream of being a rabbi never wentaway. She wanted to make more of a differ-ence in the world than she thought shecould while working for Fortune 500 tech-nology companies. A clergy friend told herthat it was time to "fish or cut bait." TheAcademy for Jewish Religion, with its com-mitment to pluralism and second-career stu-dents, provided a viable path. Althoughmany saw the obstacles, she focused on theopportunity as a gift and privilege to studywith amazing teachers and students whoshare her passion for Judaism and its rele-vance today. She unearthed the meaningand beauty of ancient texts, discovering thetraditional codes could even answer a ques-tion about the kashrut of composting.

The reason to pursue this dream was to con-tinue her work on social justice issues. Shesees her role in the rabbinate as being abridge builder and peacemaker, explainingJudaism to the outside world. She hasserved as president of the Greater Lowell(Massachusetts) Interfaith LeadershipAlliance, on the Jewish Domestic ViolenceCoalition, the interfaith committee ofGreater Lowell's Habitat for Humanity, theboard of the Merrimack Valley Project(founded on her dining room table), and theEthnic Covenant. She has helped congrega-tions start Mitzvah Day programs, taken stu-dents to the Rally to Save Darfur, served as aGirl Scout leader and trainer, and was HighHoliday rabbi for a congregation inGermany. All of these fulfill the dream ofmaking the world a better place and per-forming tikkun ha'olam.

Her internships, with RefugeeImmigration Ministry, TheHeritage at Cleveland Circle andCongregation Shalom, as well asher work at Congregation BethIsrael as rabbi educator, taughther that being with people inthe moment is more importantthan working on issues.Providing a manicure for a hos-pitalized grandmother, makingdeviled eggs for shiva, bringing a congre-gant challah and daffodils on Friday, helpinga Bar Mitzvah student design his own tallit, facilitating conversions or life transitions atMayyim Hayyim, listening to people's sto-ries—these are about creating sacred timeand space. She dreams of teaching thatJudaism has a place for everyone, createdand loved by the Divine. Finding that love ishow people find joy.

Rabbi Frisch Klein brings to the rabbinateher commitment of building a com-munity that is warm and welcoming, nonjudgmental and a safe place for every-one to explore their Judaism, engaging peo-ple where they are and helping them findmeaning in our modern world. In addition tothe rabbinate, she has owned her own con-sulting business and blogs as the EnergizerRabbi, for the joy of Judaism that keepsgoing and going and going. She welcomesall questions and is accessible by email, cellphone, in the office, or somewhere else.

She believes that perhaps the most impor-tant thing we do as Jews is pass that love oflife and joy of Judaism to our youth. While

she may be in the office, she isjust as likely to be out in thecommunity, sipping coffeewith a congregant atStarbucks, or maybeMcDonalds, or Burnt Toast. Orshe might be in the buildingsitting on a rug teaching asong to a toddler, plantingwinter rye on Sukkot toexplore the agricultural con-

nections to our chaggim, providing arts andcrafts supplies to middle schoolers so theycan make beautiful ritual objects, or debat-ing the current political issues in Israel withour teens. Her favorite Sunday mornings areones helping students write their own origi-nal blessings for snow or for flowers, She hasbeen known to teach about Maimonides’eight levels of tzedakah and philanthropyon Super Bowl Sunday while cheering onher favorite football teams. She engagesfamilies of all ages with cooking, movies, games, and, of course, social action projects.

She and her husband Simon are excitedabout being back in the Midwest, especiallyChicago. He grew up in Hyde Park, she inEvanston. They are looking forward to hikingand biking, and exploring both sides of LakeMichigan again. Rabbi Margaret is hoping totake up running again. They enjoy cooking, reading, interfaith dialogue, Habitat forHumanity and theater. Their daughter Sarahrecently graduated from Hofstra Universityand hopes once she gets them settled inElgin to become an actor in Manhattan ormaybe Chicago.
