hen we think of young children and preschool classrooms, we

often picture a room with toys, finger paints, crayons, PBS Kids

programs and books. As in so many other areas, that picture

changes as the presence of technology continues to grow.

For some people, connecting the image of iPads, laptops and

software applications with educating very young children might seem to be a stretch.

Preschool children and their teachers, however, have a very different view.

As one preschool classroom teacher noted, tablet devices such as iPads are not any dif-

ferent from a pencil or a pen – they are learning tools. When students are using a device

in the classroom, they are also absorbing a basic

comfort level with the technology they will use for

their future. The use of tablets in preschool class-

rooms is particularly appealing because they do not

require children to have the keyboarding or mouse

utilizations skills necessary for other forms of com-

puter technologies.

Top names in PBS children’s programming such

as Sesame Workshop and Fred Rogers Center along

with the National Association for the Education of

Young Children have been studying the impact of

instructional technology in classrooms. Findings

indicate that technology used appropriately can

“enhance children’s cognitive and social abilities,”

and “strengthen home/school connections.”

Today’s children need opportunities to develop the skills associated with early digital

learning adaptations in the same way that earlier generations needed book handling skills

to assist with early literacy development. Locally, these digital resources can be found on

Vegas PBS.org with games, videos, hands-on activities and much more.

Allowing learning to take place “anytime, anywhere,” resources can be accessed through

a ROKU player, xBox and via tablet, smart phone and many other digital platforms. Dozens

of age-appropriate educational apps for popular PBS programs like Martha Speaks,

Dinosaur Train and Super Why! are available. These resources have been proven to increase

student performance on standardized tests, vocabulary, and social and emotional skills at

the same time the student is having fun and feeling a sense of accomplishment. Even fin-

ger paints would have a hard time improving on that!

Estefan’s signature and distinctively sul-try contralto voice perfectly embraces someof the most recognizable and beloved tunesfrom past musical eras in this unforget-table, intimate performance, as she singssongs from her new album live in concertfor the first time.

On her new album, simply titled GloriaEstefan: The Standards, she recordedsongs that were written by some of the mostwell-known songwriters of all time, includ-ing Kern, Chaplin and Gershwin. his special is an unprecedented exploration of America’s enduring relationship with

firearms. From the first European settlements in the New World, guns have been at

the center of our national narrative. Efforts to curtail their distribution and owner-

in America, their frequent link to violence and the clash of cultures that reflect competing

visions of our national identity. Following at 9 p.m., Fixing Juvie Justice explains that

young people are entering the juvenile justice system in surprising numbers, and they seem to

emerge worse than when they entered. A group of innovators applies the restorative justice prin-

ciples of the Maori people of New Zealand to the mean streets of Baltimore. Can the wisdom

of the Maori help slow the explosion of kids in jail?

ThisWeek’s Picks

American Masters: James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket Friday, August 23 at 9:30 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1

ames Baldwin (1924-1987) was at once a major twentieth century American author, a

Civil Rights activist and, for two crucial decades, a prophetic voice calling Americans,

black and white, to confront their shared racial tragedy. Now captured on film is the pas-

sionate intellect and courageous writing of a man who was born black, impoverished,

gay and gifted. The special uses striking archival footage to evoke the atmosphere of Baldwin's

formative years — the Harlem of the 30s, his father's fundamentalist church and the émigré demi-

monde of postwar Paris. Newsreel clips from the 60s record Baldwin's running commentary on the

drama of the Civil Rights movement. The film also explores his quiet retreats in Paris, the South

of France, Istanbul and Switzerland — places where Baldwin was able to write away from the racial

tensions of America. Repeats Tuesday, August 27 at 10 p.m. Part Two airs Sunday, August 25 at 7

p.m. and Part III follows at 8 p.m.

William Kentridge:Anything Is PossibleSaturday, August 31 at 9 p.m.on Vegas PBS Jackpot! This special is an intimate look into themind and creative process of WilliamKentridge, the South African artist whoseacclaimed charcoal drawings, animations, video installations, shadow plays, mechan-ical puppets, tapestries, sculptures, liveperformance pieces and operas have madehim one of the most dynamic and excitingcontemporary artists working today. Withits rich historical references and under-tones of political and social commentary,Kentridge's work earned him inclusion inTime magazine's 2009 list of the 100 mostinfluential people in the world. This docu-mentary features exclusive interviews withKentridge as he works in his studio anddiscusses his artistic philosophy and tech-niques. He also talks about how his per-sonal history as a white South African ofJewish heritage has informed recurringthemes in his work – including violentoppression, class struggle, and social andpolitical hierarchies.

The March Tuesday, August 27 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1

his is the story of the day that Martin Luther King Jr. made his world famous “I Have

a Dream” speech and how the march nearly did not happen. And why? Because

close allies of King’s and opposing forces did not want him to make “that” humbling

and heart stopping unifying speech. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom

(aka The March) in August 1963 was to become one of most important moments in contempo-

rary history. It was the moment when one of the world’s greatest leaders spoke, carrying the

hopes and dreams of millions of disenfranchised American people; those who had faced two

centuries of injustice were about to stand up for their Human Rights. This documentary recounts

the events when 250,000 people from across a continent came together to form the largest

demonstration the young American democracy had ever seen and freed themselves from the

shackles of history.

Side by Side: The Science, Art and Impact of Digital Cinema Friday, August 30 at 9:30 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1Join Keanu Reeves on a tour of the past and the future of filmmaking in a provocative and in-depth examination of how digital filmmaking is challenging traditional celluloid film as thegold standard in moviemaking. Since the invention of cinema, the standard format for record-ing moving images has been film. Over the past two decades, a new form of digital filmmakinghas emerged, creating a groundbreaking evolution in the medium. Reeves explores the devel-opment of cinema and the impact of digital filmmaking via in-depth interviews with Hollywoodmasters, such as James Cameron, David Fincher, David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, StevenSoderbergh and many more. The program examines what is gained and what is lost both prac-tically and philosophically in the changeover from film to digital. Those who embrace digitalcite how it democratizes the filmmaking process and allows for infinite creativity.
