C E N T R A L PA R K T E N N I S C L U B August 2013
The Baseline N E W S L E T T E R
President
My goals as Club President for my one year term are to make improvements to the Club that are inline with what the members want and work within the financial structure of
the Club. The tricky part in accomplishing this goal is determining what the members want. And of course it is impossible to get 500 members to all agree. I guarantee some-one reading this thinks the recent change to flat bottom cups at the water coolers was a really bad decision. So the best the board can do is determine what the majority of the members want through the Club survey and the committees.
The board has created a timeline for the year to help guide the survey results to commit-tee to action process The first step is the Club survey which will go out in August. The results will then be gathered and sent to the committees in September when the commit-
tees first meet. The goal will be for the committees to have recommendations based on the survey results to the Board by December. Improvements can then be made based on the members’ wants.
For the above to work we need everyone to take a few minutes to complete the survey when it comes out in August. Last year we had only 28% of the Club’s adults complete
the survey. Hopefully we can double the responses this year. The survey is used as the basis for decisions the board and committees make throughout the year, so it is
important to get as many responses as possible. Information on how to complete the survey will be e-mailed, posted on the Club website and posted at the front desk by mid August.
We also need members to volunteer to be on the committees to make the process work. I highly encourage anyone who has not been on a committee to join one. Committees are where many of the decisions are made and it only takes one meeting a month. To join a committee is as simple as signing up at the front desk. The four committees are:
Finance Committee – Mission is to monitor the current and long range financial soundness of CPTC consistent with the Club’s objectives of providing the member-ship with the highest quality facilities and services possible, at reasonable levels of dues and assessments.
Facilities Committee - Mission is to ensure the club maintains a facility that is safe, comfortable, attractive and supportive of the needs of our members.
Tennis Committee - Mission is to promote and regulate the use of the tennis facili-ties to provide an equitable system for member play, a high quality facility, a profes-
sional teaching program and an organized tennis activity for every member.
Membership Committee - The membership committee welcomes new members
and hosts new member social events. They also work at marketing the club to attract
new members and review membership fees and pricing structures, making recom-
mendations to the Board.

It is hard to believe we are in the midst of planning our fall programs and schedules.
As the Tennis Staff and I meet to talk about both adult and junior programs, we are impressed with the number of teams
and participants in the USTA Mixed and Over 55 leagues. Since the USTA continues to throw curveballs into the
schedule and layout of adult team tennis, we try our best to get the information to you and posted to our website so you are aware of important
deadlines and who is willing to take on being a captain of our teams. For those new to the Club or USTA leagues, check out our USTA link
under the Activities tab. We have listed all the captains and their contact information for you to inquire about their team roster. It is amazing
at the Mixed 18 & Over level that we have two 9.0 teams, two 8.0, SIX 7.0 and three 6.0 teams. For our Adult 55 teams the women have four teams and the men have three teams representing CPTC. It is going to be a busy fall/winter of USTA league play!
For our juniors we are taking a look at some small changes to our junior program, as well as trying to create opportunities for them to have
more match play. Richie Minice has agreed to be a point person in finding empty court time and organizing more match play for the Rookie
and above levels. Samantha and the Tennis Staff have updated the bulletin boards in the Wright building foyer and have also started develop-
ing a quarterly newsletter to communicate with parents and the juniors about upcoming tournaments and events. This summer has proved to be
a season of growth for everyone and we look forward to continuing that on and off the court.
July was another busy month for events…and even another wedding! Congratulations to Arica and Will and thank you to Susan Furst for host-
ing their wedding shower, along with Elsa Brodin’s beautiful flower arrangements and Samantha’s creativity. The potluck was fun and seeing
these two lovebirds take advice from the other two newlyweds (Samantha and Ryan), you could feel the “love in the air.”
The Washington State Champs was one of the largest for juniors 12-18 years old. The weather was incredible, all of the staff worked together
to pull off an overwhelming number of matches over a short three day period. The club was very busy and the outdoor courts looked amazing.
It was fun hearing parents walk in and say “WOW! What a beautiful facility!”
The beginning of our summer nights was entertaining! The weather was great, the tennis even better! Thanks again to our staff and volunteers
for working together to create a successful event that was enjoyed by all! Hopefully you are signed up for the Summer Nights Challenge, Au-
gust 6 and 7! It was proves to be a fun team event where you get to meet players from various levels. Also look for a possible Adult Clinic later in the month. We are working on dates and times to try and accommodate most members.
The MXD also had great weather July 26-28. Matches were played here Friday night and Saturday morning. Rumor has it that they were able
to raise $30,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Brian and Kristin Nash put together a great experience that makes it fun
for everyone.
Just a reminder, the last two weeks of August are the last chance for summer vacations. This is the time when your Pros usually take their time
away from the club, we do not have the junior programs going on and it is the quietest time for our maintenance crew to jump in and get ready
for the next season.
We are still accepting sign-ups for the various Committees. We would love to have you involved and try to limit meetings to one hour a month
with some possible homework on the side! It really is quite painless.
Enjoy the last of your summer days!

New Junior Clinics
Junior Tournaments
Junior Tournaments are a instrumental way to get your
child’s game to the next level. Tournaments are a great way
for them to test out their game, try new strategies and make
friends along the way. They help to enhance confidence on
and off the court as well as teach kids the importance and
value behind sportsmanship.
The Wright building, most commonly referred to as the Teaching Building, features new bulletin boards where you
can get the most up to date information regarding Junior
Tournaments in the Pacific Northwest.
This month the club and its Pros are putting three two-day
tournaments dedicated to Rookies, Challengers and
Champs. The dates and information is listed below.

Peppermint
The digestive aid
Supplements of peppermint oil have
been proven to help with IBS symp-
toms and intestinal muscle spasms, but
even a simple DIY tea made from the
plant's leaves can calm an upset stom-
ach and ease indigestion. Just pour hot
water over 6 large leaves, steep, and
drink. Thyme
The cough stopper An infusion of thyme
works well for chest congestion. This
herb's tiny leaves are brimming with
thymol and carvacrol to loosen conges-
tion and tame bronchial spasms. Brew a
tea with 1 tablespoon fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried.
Sage
The sore-throat soother
Up until the 1920s, American medical
texts recommended gargling with sage
tea for sore throats; German experts to-
day also suggest this gargle for painful
throats and tonsillitis. To make a tea,
pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 table-
spoon chopped fresh sage or 1 teaspoon
dried and steep for 10
to 15 minutes. Aloe
The skin healer One study showed
that minor wounds
healed up to 8 days faster when treated with
aloe than they did with standard care. To
use, snip off a leaf, slice it open, scoop out
the gel, and rub directly on skin.
Lemon balm
The cold-sore treatment
This member of the mint
family has antiviral proper-
ties and can help treat cold
sores. Pick 2 to 3 teaspoons
of leaves, pour 1 cup boiling
water over top, and let steep
for 10 to 15 minutes. Dab a
cotton ball in the warm tea
and apply to the cold sore
daily.

HOW TO CONQUER SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF TENNIS
Tennis is quite a unique sport that is full of intrigue. It is a sport that taps into many skills within each of us. Almost all sports allow you the ability to specialize within the sport. A few examples would be a pitcher, a defender, a running back, a point guard, or a sprinter. In tennis that is not the case. We must learn all parts of the game. We must learn how to dictate play as well as how to neutralize and defend.
There lie the challenges we face.
I’d like to focus on how the mind and the emotions interrelate to make the person. Negative emotions, a lack of confi-dence, and stress deeply affect our ability to problem solve, to be aware, to maintain concentration and to work in an optimistic mindset. Once you learn how to manage negative thoughts and stress, your mind and reactive skills will great-ly improve. Practice breathing, relaxation, be curious, and gain experience in competition. Have fun on the courts while
maintaining your focus. Enjoy a good point and have a goal of improving. Sports are streaky so don’t be afraid of a streak. Just try to stretch out your good streaks and work towards shortening or changing the positive streaks of your opponent.
The brain is truly amazing. It’s not enough to have a good mind. You need to use it. Don’t be passive, be engaged. Learn
how your brain reacts to emotions. Practice bringing yourself back to a neutral state if needed. We always need calm and intensity in a match. Tennis requires focus, commitment, and awareness. As you increase your ability to control emo-tions, your reaction time, perspective, and the use of your knowledge will improve. You will be able to adjust to change, handle stress, use good judgment, concentrate, and retain information.
Passion is a big part of sports. The human spirit is very powerful as is the mind. Become more internally and externally
aware. To me, tennis is a truly fascinating sport. I love all the many parts of this sport, including its challenges. You can help yourself and others to learn and to compete nearer to their potential by thriving in this challenging but highly addic-tive sport. Choose to practice problem solving, critical thinking, and decision making daily to have them become a habit. Every day is a learning experience. Take it one step at a time as you work to improve your mental and emotional skills. It’s definitely worth it as your game expands and becomes your own!
Enjoy the battle,
Lisa Moldrem
