Several friends and/or associates of mine have recently returned from China, and though they’ve been in the People’s Republic for different reasons – the message each has brought back is the same. Wow!One of the best anecdotes I’ve heard about the place at the moment is that it’s like America was in the ‘60s….restless, dynamic, and interested only in tomorrow, even if it is at the expense of today.

NUMBERS GAMEIn our office, of course you can’t mention the word China without someone proffering an opinion about the motorbikes made there. Colleague Dave McMullan, an expat Englishman who has been writing about the motorcycle industry in China for the past nine years has just forwarded me some figures to help me get my head around the sheer number of two-wheelers currently being made in China. Despite a recent slowdown, produc-tion and sales of standard two-wheelers between January and April 2013 were 4,056,500 and 4,131,200 units respectively, production and sales of scooters 1,007,800 and 1,046,500 units respectively. Most popular were 125cc and 150cc models with figures of 3,245,700 and 3,328,100 units. And that, remember, is just for the first four months of the year.

ALSO IMPRESSIVEExport numbers are also impres-sive, receipts for the first four months of the year across the five most popular classes (50 through 250cc) $US1,442,000,000. And yes you read that right, almost $US1.5 billion! While production might be down slightly, export receipts are actually on the up and up, increasing by 9% between January and April. Included in that figure is an impres-

sive increase in the number of ATVs exported, up 26% year-on-year Jan-April. More and more motorcycle parts are also being exported, the increase in revenue year-on-year Jan-April 33%.Obviously we only see a tiny percent-age of this, yet we cannot ignore what’s happening, new player on our market, CF-Moto, a good example.

FIT ‘N FINISHWe’ve just tested our second CF-Moto model (the TR mini-tourer) and though the first one, the naked NK middleweight was worthy but otherwise only remarkable because of its keen recommended retail price, the TR impressed on every level and yes that includes fit and finish…which has always been a weak point with the Chinese. As Michael Esdaile explains in his test report, CF-Moto is the first Chinese company to produce and export larg-er (i.e. over 250cc) capacity motor-cyles. And the focus on quality levels in markets such as ours, Australia’s and those of the UK and mainland Europe has obviously played a part. With spectacular results too. Export growth in the first four months of this year exceeded 70%.

CAN’T IGNOREThere are still plenty of hurdles Chinese manufacturers are going to have to overcome before Kiwi bikers are completely won over. Design integrity is one, recognisable brand values and a general lack of brand ‘back story’ are others. It’s these, after-all, which are driving the current market fascination for blue-chip ‘marque’ (Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Ducati et al) models. Eventually, however, most purchas-ing decisions come down to price. And if look, feel and quality levels are more or less the same but the price is significantly better…..all I can say is watch this space! ■
