Hydrate! We are now going into warmer weather so be sure to keep hydrated as much as possible. Doctors recommend at least eight - 8oz. glasses of water a day. Private Duty Caregivers… When you need to hire a private duty caregiver you must hire someone who has gone through a current criminal, drug, physical, tuberculosis screening and has current liability insurance. Visual & Hearing Impaired Tips *For the Visually Impaired residents please be sure to tell them who you are because they might not be able to recognize you at first. Also ask if they need help reading something like a menu item if you see them having difficulty. *Next time, for the Hearing Impaired it’s not always how loudly you speak but how slowly you enunciate your words and speak slowly. Also try to face and be at eye level when talking to these residents. *Remember to always be patient and assist these residents safely whenever they need help either in the dining rooms or at social

The Los Gatos Town Council is considering a ban on

single use plastic bags. As proposed, the ordinance

would ban their use by grocery, drug, hardware, liquor,

electronic, clothing, book and thrift stores. Gift bags

with ribbon and tissue would be exempt so long as the

bags met reusability requirements. Currently, the

ordinance does not ban single use plastic bags for dry

cleaners, restaurants and thrift stores. It is proposed

that the ban take effect beginning January 1, 2014.

The ordinance, very like those in the surrounding

communities, requires that merchants charge 10 cents

for paper bags in 2014 and 25 cents per bag in 2015.

That begins to sound like serious money! NOW is the

time to get your reusable bags.

Notions N Needs is the place to get them. They have

small reusable bags for $1.00 and large bags for $2.50.

Beat the ban! Get your bags and begin taking them to

the store with you. For those with a car, put them in

the car so they are handy. If you have a cart or

scooter, put the bags in your cart or basket and you will

have them every time you need them!

Dining Services

Living at The Terraces, one gets accustomed to good service. As a matter of fact, it is taken for granted. But there are times when

it is far above and beyond what one might reasonably expect. Such a time occurred on July 4. Our son was here to dine at the BBQ with us. We had no sooner reached the elevator when my husband became ill and obviously could neither attend the BBQ nor be left alone. Jonathan got his father back to our apartment and I took off for food. (Our larder was bare!) When I got to the Dining Room, Chad Jackson, noticing my

discomfort, asked if he could help. Chad promptly filled three plates and took them – and me – to my apartment. He asked if I had ordered Grab & Go’s – which I had – and without further ado said he would take care of it – and did. Chad could not have been more helpful or more gracious. He helped this lady in distress and I shall be eternally grateful. Nominated by Lucille Cassel

Maple-Chipotle Glazed Corn on the Cob The rich sweetness of maple combined with the spiciness of chipotle peppers, works well as a glaze for this delicious grilled corn recipe. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 8 minutes Total Time: 18 minutes Yield: Serves 6 Ingredients: 6 ears of corn, husked 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/3 cup butter 2 chipotle chilies, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Preparation: In a small saucepan, combine butter, maple syrup, garlic, salt, pepper, and chipotle chilies. Allow to simmer over medium heat for about 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Preheat grill for medium heat. Place corn onto grill and brush with maple glaze. Be sure to turn corn frequently and brush with glaze. Cook for 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and serve.

Research has shown that strengthening exercises are both safe and effective for women and men of all ages, including those who are not in perfect health. In fact, people with health concerns—including heart disease or arthritis—often benefit the most from an exercise program that includes lifting weights a few times each week.

Strength training, particularly in conjunction with regular aerobic exercise, can also have a profound impact on a person’s mental and emotional health.

Here are benefits of Strength Training: Helps with arthritis. Tufts University recently completed a strength-training program with older men and women with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis. The results of this sixteen week program showed that strength training decreased pain by 43%, increased muscle strength and general physical performance, improved the clinical signs and symptoms of the disease, and decreased disability.

Decrease osteoporosis. Post-menopausal women can lose 1-2% of their bone mass annually. Results from a study conducted at Tufts University, which were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1994 showed that strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk for fractures among women aged 50-70. Obesity. Strength training is crucial to weight control, because individuals who have more muscle mass have a higher metabolic rate. Muscle is active tissue that consumes calories while stored fat uses very little energy. Strength training can provide up to a 15% increase in metabolic rate, which is enormously helpful for weight loss and long-term weight control.

Within 15 minutes of my telling him, he pleasantly fixed the brakes and delivered the walker to my apartment. No person could expect more of another person! Vincent Foresta is truly a treasure to have and keep at TLG.

August, the month of my birth, has arrived. On

the 28th I am planning to celebrate being 28! And

why not, for that was a good year. It was the

year our daughter, Lauren, was born—I was in the

navy and stationed aboard my first ship. There

were some disappointments, for we had to deploy

for six months soon after Lauren’s birth, but we

returned on schedule. For the first few days back

Lauren was a bit hesitant to come to me but soon

she cuddled in my arms.

All in all, that 28th year was a good one so I plan

to celebrate it. I say all this with a bit of tongue-in

-cheek for that year is in the past, the far distant

past I admit, but I find there is reason to

reminisce over each year of life. Of course, some

years were better than others. The years my

parents died were difficult. Those years are

balanced by good years such as when my children

and then grandchildren were born. This present

year is significant in that our first grandson was

married in January and I had the privilege of

performing the ceremony.

Following my naval career I served as pastor of

two churches, first in Ocean Beach (San Diego)

and then in Nevada City. At present it is my joy

and privilege to be chaplain here at The Terraces.

In every stage of life I have found many things to

celebrate. But, just as surely, there have been

difficulties along the way. As young parents there

were worries—even more when our children

became teens. Rebellion seems to be an

inevitable passage of life for a growing child.

Considering this matter of travail, however, I

realize that any trials I have faced pale to

insignificance compared to the anguish and losses

which many of you have suffered. I cannot say I

know what you feel for I do not. I can say, “I

care.” Even better I can point to the One who

cares the most.

In difficult times I have found this response of

Paul the apostle helpful. To the church in Philippi

he wrote these words concerning his own

situation, “I know what it is to be in need and I

know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the

secret of being content in any and every

situation.” I have read and even repeated these

words many times over the years, but only

recently have I focused my attention on these

three little words: “I have learned.” Surely Paul

was not always blissfully at ease. He had to learn!

It is difficult to be content when we are in need or

even when we have plenty. Later on, however,

after we have had time to reflect upon our

experiences, we can gain contentment.

It is my prayer that each of us may celebrate each

year of life. If it is a year of plenty—be thankful.

If it is one of need—be faithful. In any and every

circumstance know that God loves you. He will be

there for you. Have a good rest of this year!

JOE & DORA YEE—D225 Joe was born in Walnut Grove, CA and at age 2

moved back to China. He returned to California at

age 19 and settled in Los Angeles / Monterey

Park. Dora was born in Guangzhou, China

(historically known as Canton). Her family

immigrated to Victoria, British Columbia. Both Joe

and Dora worked in their respective family grocery

store business before meeting through their

siblings. After marrying in 1958, they started their

own "Mom & Pop" Grocery Store in downtown San

Jose named Yee's Market.

Joe and Dora have one daughter, their son-in-

law and two grandchildren living nearby in San

Jose.

Dora enjoys puzzles, word searches, gardening and

walking. Joe's interest are playing mahjong and

watching the NBA games. His favorite team is the

LA Lakers. They both enjoy spending time with

family and watching their grandchildren at their

sporting events. They look forward to meeting

new friends at The Terraces as well as participating

in community activities and walking to the nearby

shops.

DWIGHT & JAN WYGANT—P392 Dwight and Jan Wygant have been married for 56

years. They met in New York where Dwight was a

pilot for Pan American and Jan was an air hostess

for TWA. Dwight continued to fly for Pan Am after

they married but Jan had to resign from her

position as an air hostess because they were not

allowed to be married in those days.

Dwight and Jan’s two children were born in New

York where the family lived until being transferred

to California in 1964. The Wygants have owned a

home in Los Gatos since that time until moving into

The Terraces.

ED & PAT SMITH—D326 Ed grew up in San Bruno and moved to San Jose

with his family when he was in high school.

Following his interests in electronics from an early

age he became an electrical engineer. He made his

career in computer design in what was to become

known as the Silicon Valley. What a lucky

coincidence that was!

Pat was born and raised in San Jose, not far from

where she and Ed would make their home for more

than 50 yrs. Pat become an occupational therapist

and maintained a private practice in Cupertino. She

specialized in hand therapy, ergonomics and return-

to-work services for injured workers.

Ed and Pat met through a cousin and were married

in 1962. They bought a home in West San Jose

where they raised their daughter Donna and son

Bryan. Donna and son-in-law John live just a few

miles away in Campbell and Bryan lives in St Paul,

Minnesota.

After retirement Ed pursued a new interest in

genealogy and published a book on the history of

his family from several generations back. He also

picked-up his longtime interest in photography and

is the photographer for all family events. Pat has

taken-up watercolor painting, memoirs writing and

traveling whenever and wherever she can. Pat and

daughter Donna participate in a walking/running

group and walk in many local races. Ed and Pat

enjoy watching their two grandsons grow and

flourish. Luckily they live nearby.

At The Terraces they plan to enjoy the freedom to

pursue their interests and make new friends.

Big Kudos to our Team Member of the month: Martina Alvarez Martina is a tray line lead who is a big part of why TLG dining received a perfect score 2 years in a row during our state survey. She has been instrumental in raising the level of resident satisfaction in the Villages and the Lodge. If you are

upstairs in the early morning and see a smiling resident with a perfectly cooked fresh egg on a plate in front of them, you can bet Martina probably cooked it. Cooking a perfect egg to order is just one of her newly learned talents; just ask her about her expertise with breakfast burritos, omelets and pancakes. When we implemented a new system that involved hot carts for

delivering room trays in the Villages, she took the challenge to make sure every tray delivered was piping hot. From July 5th to July 9th, we took the bus out of

service and in for repairs. The following is a list

of things that got attention:

Replaced worn out front suspension upper

and lower ball joints.

Replaced all four stiff suspension shocks.

Got a front-end alignment.

Lubricated the chassis.

Replaced both batteries on the bus.

Adjusted rear passenger flip seats so they

sit level.

Secured interior panels, seats, etc. to

remove rattles.

Adjusted wheelchair lift to eliminate rattles

The mechanic thinks there is a hydraulics leak

in the wheelchair lift which is throwing the lift

out of alignment and causing the rattles. This

does not affect the safety of the lift; however,

he is looking into ordering a replacement part

for it.

We’re hoping that these repairs and

adjustments will lead to a smoother and more

comfortable ride on the bus. If you have any
