Making a Difference for People with Medicare

UPCAP Needs Your Talents and SkillsNavigating Medicare can be tough for many seniors. From prescription drug plans to private health

plans, it’s not surprising that people with Medicare are confused about their health insurance and their

options. Fortunately, there is an organization that they can turn to for help.

UPCAP’s Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) works with people to help them

understand their Medicare benefits, bills, and rights. MMAP services are free, confidential, and

available to all Michigan Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers. Volunteers play a critical

role in providing MMAP services and helping seniors and those with disabilities.

Each volunteer makes a unique difference to people with Medicare. Volunteers counsel people about

Medicare, give presentations about MMAP, assist with administrative tasks, work on special projects,

and more. No matter what your interests or abilities, MMAP has an opportunity for you.

One U.P. counselor stated: “I like the fact that I can make a difference in people’s lives. They are

usually so frustrated and confused when they come to me, but I can help straighten everything out for

them, in everyday language that they can understand. They are always so grateful – it’s a good

usually so frustrated and confused when they come to me, but I can help straighten everything out for

them, in everyday language that they can understand. They are always so grateful – it’s a good

feeling!”

MMAP is looking for dedicated and resourceful volunteers with all sorts of talents and skills in

Houghton & Keweenaw Counties. You can be part of a dynamic team, meet new people, and set your

own schedule. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to help your friends, neighbors, and community,

please call Sherry Whitman, U.P. MMAP Coordinator at 1-800-803-7174, or dial 2-1-1.

MMAP, Inc. is funded by the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging through a grant from the Centers

for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and is administered locally by UPCAP Services, Inc., the U.P. Area

Agency on Aging.

The United States Postal Service is in the process of closing a number of processing centers in Michigan, but

the closing most important for us is the processing center located in Kingsford that handles all mail processing

in the UP.

This means that we will lose the one day mail service that we have come to expect for government operations,

industries, businesses and residents throughout the UP. The original announcement was made by the USPS at

a public meeting held in Kingsford in the fall of 2011 and Senator Levin has requested impact studies since that

time. It has become apparent that most businesses and residents are not even aware that their mail service

will be affected, or that the UP mail processing is proposed to be moved to Green Bay, WI. Sen. Levin

continues to stay on top of this issue, but his time in office is coming to a close.

An effort to survey businesses throughout the UP by each County’s Chamber of Commerce was conducted

earlier this year, but we only recieved about 700 responses. Our goal is to make everyone aware that if the

Mail Processing in the UP changes as proposed, we can expect 3-4 day mail service instead of the 1-2 day

service that we currently experience.

If this change in mail service will affect your business or the businesses in your jurisdiction in any way, we urge

you to contact your legislatorss and voice your concerns.

We have sample letters as well as the survey results if you would like to use them for your correspondance.

Please contact Trina at the Chamber Office for those documents by calling 482.5240 or emailing

[email protected].

National Historical ParkKeweenaw National Historical Park rangers

immigration history, and even the relationship

between bats and mines. The area’s diverse

architectural styles will also be explored, including a

focused tour of the Calumet Visitor Center where

There will also be kid’s activities, demonstrations,

What’s Happening for Parade Of Nations 2014?

For our 25th year, the theme is “Around the World in 25 Years – Parade of Nation’s Silver Jubilee.” The date is Saturday,

September 13th , and we are moving things along and encouraging those wishing to participate to do the same. Parade,

booth and performance applications can be completed electronically at: http://www.mtu.edu/international/events-

programs/parade-nations/get-involved.html . Our logo has been approved and will appear on posters, t-shirts and

other promotional materials. This colorful logo with its silver glitter on black t-shirts will be eye catching.

What’s New?

This year will be the first year that we will be hosting a homecoming for international alumni from MTU. Meet and

greets and other programs will be provided. This should also provide additional revenue for the area’s tourist interests.

In addition, PON events and programs will be scheduled during the week preceding the main date of Sept. 13. One

example already confirmed is the speaking engagement of Mahatma Gandhi's great grandson, Dr. Arun Gandhi.

Several world class professional headline acts are being considered, including a Chinese circus from Branson and an

African percussion troupe from Washington D.C. Both are award winning shows that have toured extensively both in

the US and overseas. Whoever is selected will perform during the parade, on the Dee stage and during an evening

show in the Rozsa. We are open to linking this show with a major sponsor who would like the maximum exposure this

will provide. If you are interested, please inquire.

Further collaborations are being sought with Northern Michigan University, Gogebic Community College and

Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College to expand and build on the years of mutual PON cooperation that Finlandia

University and Michigan Tech have enjoyed.

ATTRACT BUSINESS: The Chamber provides information and referrals to people who want to visit or relocate here. If someone inquires about tourism, we coordinate with the Keweenaw Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. When someone is relocating a business or family here, we connect them to the appropriate community resources that meet their needs.

DEVELOP : The Chamber will continue to grow networking and visibility opportunities for small businesses. We will provide opportunities for ribbon cuttings, Eggs and Issues, and After Hours networking events, promotion and advertising opportunities, golf outings, annual membership directory, business referrals, and a monthly newsletter.
