R.M.T.C. Albuquerque April 2014

Albuquerque, NM. .

Ken, Greg, and Tools for sale

The New Mexico RMTC’ers held our regular April meeting at a local wood store, Albuquerque Exotic Woods. They were having an event of their own, and were glad to have us participate. The space and décor was just about perfect for our small group, and we were able to meet and promote the RMTC to other store visitors. Much interest was expressed, and even a few tools sold! Time will tell if we manage to get some new members to our club. Unfortunately, we did not have a subsequent tool meeting in June for lack of a meeting host. Next meeting will be the Annual Labor day event and I hope all New Mexico members will get registered and head to Golden Colorado for a weekend the promises to be fun and rewarding! I did not keep notes for this meeting, therefore do not have an accurate headcount for attendees, but it seemed like I saw most of the usual faces. Considering the change in venue and time, attendance was successful. We provided cold soft drinks but skipped the usual libation selections and food. But don’t worry, troopers, we should have the traditional spread at the October meeting (hosted by yours truly

Dave turns his back on the low-ballers (not really). For the second time in my tool-collecting career I managed to have a selling table. Usually, I just buy ‘em, but I have managed to get to the point where I have a selection of stuff to dispose of. It felt pretty good to sell a few user tools to folks wandering in off the street, and lighten the load a little.

Most of the auction tools were from a cooper’s tool chest that had fell victim to last year’s floods. There were also some picture framing tools, Miter cutters and miter clamps, thanks to Fred Mares for bring the heavy metal to the auction.

Stanley #36 ½ caliper rule display at the June Meeting. I think everyone had a good time and left with some new tools and stories to share with other people. Thanks to the hosts of the meeting, Charlie Aumiller, Don Burd, Steve Scruggs and all the members who help out to make it a success.

Colo. /Wyo. Area meeting June meeting at

Rock Creek Farm

Having missed the last meeting I was anxious to make this meeting. The farm is nice place to have the meeting, with a large screened porch which is perfect place sit, on warm spring day. Unless it rains, it rained! Still the tool collecting spirit was not dampened and we had a large turnout, about 35 members.

Before the rain came we had time to swap tools and stories on the porch. Steve Scruggs brought an estate for the auction. All the tools were priced and everyone had a chance to pay the marked price before the auction or take their chances at the auction. Most of us waited till the auction and some of us, I included, paid more then, but it was fun. We had a business meeting and discussed the upcoming annual meeting and upcoming local meetings. Al Nelson pointed out a typo in the last issue, naming him as the July and November area meeting host, he will only be hosting July at his house, sorry Al.

Then we’ve got a sledge hammer head

Thinking about the upcoming annual meeting reminded me that I never finished the magic lamp story from the last annual meeting. I purchased the lamp at the auction and upon my return to Denver began to polish it, then appeared a whiff of smoke and a small green man wearing a turban. It was like a gene and a leprechaun mixed together. He said since I had freed him from his lamp, he would grant me one wish. Not thinking clearly, (I blame a mixture of metal polish and paint thinner on that) I looked around and said I wish my work room was clean and organized. My little friend gazed around at the controlled chaos, called my shop and began crying. He explained that the long time he had spent imprisoned in the lamp had sapped his powers. There was no way in this condition he could perform such a lofty and impossible task. “Please!” he begged, give me another chance. “Well, alright” I said, this time I was ready for my wish. There was something I’d always wanted, I smiled and said, I wish for the nickel plated fillister bed for my Stanley #141 bullnose plow plane. His eyes grew big, he rung his hands and lowered his head and thought. Finally after about two minutes of silence, he raised his head and said, “Which wall do you want your chisels on and on which self should the planes go.” That was last year, the shop is cleaner, though not really less chaotic. My little friend has returned to his lamp, for fear of another cleaning job. The lamp will placed in the annual meeting auction, may be someone else will have a better wish. My #141 is still sans fillister bed, but hope springs eternal. Thanks, Steve

The Editor’s Ramblings OK, I warned you………

This is a picture of Chris and his butterfly net. We are on an ill-fated hunting trip. He seems to have brought a net to a round up. Both the cows and I were surprised by his fearless attempt at corralling a cow. Lucky for him, and me, the heifers were raised Amish and had no need for violence. They tolerated him as long as he kept his distance. Finally they started to run off and my surprise he chased them at full speed until they reached the woods and disappeared up the hill. He was very disappointed, as he had hoped for a steak that night. I told him not worry that there were still plenty of cow pies for supper, but that’s another story. I beg you please help me out!! I need materials for this newsletter, please. I know you guys have interesting stories, unknown facts and sexy photos of your tools. I’m just asking you to share them please. Mail them, email them, or even send them by carrier pigeon. If not, next time I’ll publish all three versions of the Gettysburg address, (which I do have on my computer) so please help me out.

From the President

It's getting on to about one month before our Annual Meet. Hope everyone has started to get all those great tools out for those award winning displays and decided on what tools will be up for sale - especially the best ones that will be in our (always entertaining!) auction. We're still working on getting an estate (it looks promising). So there is lots going on and we hope to see you there. Just some reminders about the location: This year we are holding our event at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC), 710 10th Street, in Golden, Colorado. The AMC is north, down Washington Avenue (the 'main' street in Golden), from the Table Mountain Inn where we had our Annual Meeting in 2012. To help you even more - the AMC is on the NE corner of Washington Avenue & 10th Street. We will be using the 2 big rooms, on the north east corner of the building, right off their parking lot on 10th Street. This means you'll be able to back right up to the Tool & Display room doors - no long hallways or steps! "Chief Buzz" will, again, be hosting the tailgate sales in the NW corner of the parking lot. To help even more we'll have out signs and a few "friendly faces" to help you find the place. You can even call my cell if you still can't find us (720-202-1372). A reminder & word about displays: This year’s theme is - "Tool Makers, Hardware Companies or Tool Companies Other Than Stanley”. Cash prizes will be given for: 1. First place best in theme, 2. Second place in theme, 3. Best single tool, 4. Best out of theme (here you go all you Stanley fans). Display tables are 6'x30" (same as 2012). Each display must fit on one table (half table displays are allowed). If you've won an award, for a particular display, in the past 5 years please do not enter it into competition again this year. While members are encouraged to put together multiple displays you can only win in one category - if you happen to be selected as winner in two then you have the choice of which category/display you want to win and the judges will select another display for the category you choose not to win in.

Judges are selected (by me) the day of the event from attendees who do not have displays. The awards will be given out after the Saturday dinner. Sales Tables & the Sunday Auction: Sales tables are 6'X30". You must reserve the number of sales tables, you want, on the registration form prior to the event. We may have extra tables, but I wouldn't count on it. If we do have extras tables then they will be rented out the day of the event on a first come, first served basis. You must bring your own covers to cover your tools prior to the start of selling and for the evening. Please bring some good tools for the auction to help make it a little more attractive and exciting. While our auctioneers try to make 'junk boxes' exciting to bid on lets help them out by giving them something they can get excited about holding up there to sell. Some 'odds & ends': The dinner will be a 'buffet style' again. Main entrée choices are grilled salmon or grilled flank steak. There will be a 'green' salad, roasted potatoes, barbequed baked pinto beans & desert. Please get your registration form in by 8/10 so we can give the caterer an exact 'head' count for dinner. The Meeting schedule is on-line as are a copy of the registration form and a list of area hotels (I will be staying @ the Hampton Inn-Denver West). I'm sure there will be some "last minute" things come up but right now everything seems to be under control. Thanks to all who have helped out with "getting this show on the road" and participating in making this a great event - I especially want to thanks my good friend and fellow Board member Charlie Aumiller for all the phone calls he's made for arranging, checking and scheduling things. Couldn't have done it without you Charlie! I'll close with this thought and suggestion - "get yourself down to Golden and help make this the best Annual Meeting ever!" Without your participation (even just walking through and saying "hi") all the planning, etc. is for naught. Don

Annual meeting Elections

Each year at the annual meeting elections of the officers occurs, according to the club bylaws, article 4, and section 2. A nomination committee will present a slate of nominees prior to and at the annual meeting. That Committee consisted of Charlie Aumiller, Steve Scruggs and Don Burd.

Slate of nominees for 2015

Steve Gosselin for President (2yrs) Dennis McCaigue for Vice President (2yrs) Steve Butti for Secretary (1yr) Chris Gomez for Treasurer (1yr) (returning) Jason Fink (NM) Director (3yrs) (returning) This 'slate' will be presented at the Business Meeting on 8/31 @ 9am. At that time all present RMTC members will be allowed to vote to accept the slate and/or nominate their own choices for officers. Any questions on this procedure please don't hesitate to call me, Don Burd, (720-202-1372).

Life's a box of old tools. You never know what you're gonna get.

W When we

R.MT.C. Albuquerque April meet continued

An interesting plus to our meeting location was the demonstration of a “portable” sawmill in the parking lot. Folks were able to bring their own logs for milling at a reasonable rate, and we were treated to the roar of the cutting action and the spray of sawdust in the desert wind

Parking Sawmill in action lot

Dave Fessler brought the lone What-sit for the day, a small hammer, marked by the Military. As seen in the pictures, the claw end has only ½ a claw. With no apparent breaks, it was manufactured in that manner for some distinct purpose. None of us was able to provide identification, so if anyone has ideas about this hammer we would love to hear from you! As the afternoon wore on, and spring winds continued to bear down on the hapless mill workers outside we called the meeting to a close and went our separate ways. Thanks to Exotic Hardwoods for allowing us access to their space, and thanks to all members who showed up. Don’t forget the Annual meeting; make your hotel reservations soon!
