New-‐News:
New DoDEA Science Grant!
Based on the work that has been accomplished over the last three years of our DoDEA K-‐5 science grant work, professional development trainings and improvement in student achievement scores in science, the North Kitsap School District was invited to apply for and received another three year DoDEA science grant! We will be expanding our program into the secondary level and serve K-‐12. Lori McClanahan’s role as the science coach is still in place but will shift to meet the needs of this new work. We will also be expanding our Science Leadership Team. Stay tuned as these exciting new changes are implemented over the next few weeks!
North Kitsap School District Summer Science Academy Students from all six of our elementary schools attended NKSD’s third annual Summer Science Academy. SSA helps our Title, LAP, ELL and ESY students strengthen their reading, writing and math skills through hands-‐on science investigations. This summer’s hard working, dedicated staff served about 115 of our NKSD students. Student data was collected via S.T.A.R. for reading and math and has been made available to students’ home schools in time for the start of next school year. SSA report cards that include students’ STAR scores were sent to Office Managers to be placed in students’ cumulative files. Data continues to show that the program’s design is successful. A big thank you to Vinland’s staff for sharing their building with SSA. Another big thank you to the North Kitsap Schools Foundation for providing us with funding for kit refills and guest speakers.
Engineering a Summer Science Program
North Kitsap School District Director of Instructional Programs, Patricia Moore and Elementary Science Coach, Lori McClanahan have been invited to present at the Washington Science Teacher’s Association conference this October in Spokane.
Patricia and Lori designed and manage NKSD’s successful Summer Science Academy that serves Title, LAP and ELL students in grades K-‐5. The course they will present at WSTA will be titled, Engineering a Summer Science Program, and will help participants from around the state lay the foundation for building their own program.
Science Resources:
Looking for NKSD Elementary Science Information? Don’t forget that sustainable science documents created during our last three years of DoDEA science work are available on our District Website: go to www.nkschools.org, sign in, then go to For Staff, Elementary Science. New to our District? Click on the “Washington State Science Standards/Materials/Correlation Guides by Grade Level for North Kitsap School District” link. This document will show you, by grade level, which science standards you are responsible for and which materials you will receive to teach them with. You’ll also find a link to OSPI’s Washington State K-‐12 Science Standards on this page.
Changes in Science Resources With the end of one grant and the start of another there are a few changes to our science resources worth noting.
• Discovery Education: Our DE subscription will be available again this year. DE is an online resource that offers a breadth and depth of digital media content that is immersive, engaging and brings the world into the classroom to give every student a chance to experience fascinating people, places, and events. All content is aligned to state standards, can be aligned to custom curriculum, and supports classroom instruction regardless of the technology platform. For information on accessing this resource follow the Discovery Education link on our Elementary Science web page. This link also includes directions for accessing the shared science folders that have been created by grade level in our district. In these folders you’ll find videos, songs and much more that align with your science standards and materials.
• Science A-‐Z: Our subscriptions from our previous DoDEA science grant are good until October 23rd, 2014. Science A-‐Z is a dynamic website that integrates science and literacy while helping teachers satisfy standards in both science and English language arts. Science A-‐Z is a member of the Learning A-‐Z family of websites. By choosing from the wide variety of high-‐quality materials, teachers can use science to teach reading, and use reading to teach science. With the implementation of CCSS ELA standards in our District this year, it is our hope that we will be able to continue this subscription as part of our new grant work. Stay tuned!
• Grades 3-‐5 Science A Closer Look textbook online edition: we have a six year subscription to this valuable resource and are good to go through the 2016-‐17 school year. Directions for connecting your students to this site can be found by clicking on
the Grade 3-‐5 MMH Science A Closer Look Materials link on our Elementary Science web page.
• Grades 4-‐5 Science MAP Assessment: The Science MAP Assessment was part of our previous grant work and will not be continued with our upcoming grant.
• Science Field Trip Funding: We were very fortunate to receive science field trip transportation funding for every K-‐5 classroom over the last three years as part of our 2011-‐14 DoDEA grant. This funding is not part of our upcoming grant, but don’t despair! The sustainability plan of our previous grant was to build a wide network of community partners that could help us provide in class and in the field science experiences for our students. Thanks to our very generous community partners we are able to do just that! For a complete list of K-‐5 Science Community Partners click on the Elementary Science Field Trips link on our Elementary Science web page.
NKSD Science Kits: A message from our Science Materials Coordinator, Peggy Bullock; Please return any kit materials you many still have from last year. They need to be restocked for the upcoming school year. It is ok to keep your kit teacher binders if you need them for this year’s teaching assignment. A material delivery schedule will be emailed to you soon.
District Science Web Page Available for Families:
Please share the word! This page is the ‘family-‐side’ of the work we’re doing around science in NKSD. For now, it features a photo gallery of our young scientists in action and links to family-‐friendly science websites, including several great local resources
Teachers, we’d love to add photos of your scientists to our gallery. Just make sure any students pictured are cleared to publish and email photos to Lori McClanahan.
To access this page go to www.nkschools.org, click on Learning, Science, Elementary Science.
Science/CCSS ELA Aligned Books Coming to an Elementary School Library Near You!
CCSS ELA and upcoming Next Generation Science Standards call for an integrated model of literacy. With that in mind and with a desire to help classroom teachers meet the demands of these new standards, Mary Fox, Kathy McNeely-‐Mobley and Debbie Jo Rock partnered with Lori McClanahan to create book lists for each grade level K-‐5. These lists contain a balance of fiction, nonfiction, readers’ theater, Native American connections, poetry, songs and engineering trade books that
will engage students and help teachers meet current and future Science and CCSS ELA standards. These books were ordered with 2011-‐2014 DoDEA Grant funds this summer and are being delivered to buildings as this newsletter goes to press! Elementary librarians will be learning how to access and help teachers use these resources through a CCSS ELA and science standards lens at a training this week. They will then share this information with staff at the building level.
K-2 Resource Room Support Materials
Nonfiction leveled readers that align with Science Standards have been purchased with DoDEA Grant funds and will be delivered to buildings this fall. These books will help Resource Room Teachers support classroom instruction.
