Some of us reset our internal clocks on January 1, New Years’ Day. Some of us run birthday to birthday in how we calculate time. Many of us run our lives from fall to fall. The weather hasn’t signaled it yet, but the back-to-school sales are starting up. Fall is upon us. Students and teachers will be hunting for backpacks and notebooks. Football fans will be writing the home games on their schedules. Lots of things will be kicking back into swing here at St. John’s, too. Circle meetings that take a break for the summer will reconvene. Our Sundays will have more to offer during the ten o’clock hour, and that’s just the start. In September, we’ll see even more changes, as our Wednesday services come back and we look forward to Homecoming. Fall’s busier schedules give us an opportunity to decide, once again, what is most important in our lives. Our time is a precious resource. The more options we have for how to spend it, the more we’re able to see how we choose to arrange our lives. These are the things that our children and grandchildren will remember, and the stories that we will tell as we age. We will remember our family’s voices as we cheer on our favorite teams and the new clothes bought for legs that got longer during shorts season. We also know the joy of reconnecting with friends we haven’t seen much this summer and continuing to build those relationships. As you and your family make your decisions this fall, invite God into the conversation. Pray that the Holy Spirit would inspire you as you plan out your time for the upcoming months. See how God might be calling you in new and ongoing ways. Pray that God would meet you on the soccer field and as you look for new clothes for school. See who God will place in your life and what plans God has made for you. In the upcoming pages, you’ll find invitations to join up with what God is doing at St. John’s in all kinds of ways. I hope you’ll come be part of Rally Day on August 28 (p. 6). Singers will be excited to see the date for our annual choir clinic (p. 7) or take this opportunity to join our praise band. Our monthly calendar is on page 11, where you can see everything in one place. (An updated version is always available on our website www.stjohns- spartanburg.org) My prayer for you is that God be part of your going out and your coming in, your time with church and your time out in God’s world. Dear Saints of St. John’s, Our lives run on interesting calendars. Some of us reset our internal clocks on January 1, New Years’ Day. Some of us run birthday to birthday in how we calculate time. Many of us run our lives from fall to fall. The weather hasn’t signaled it yet, but the back-to-school sales are starting up. Fall is upon us. Update: The St. John's VISITOR goes Green! As already announced, we've decided to "go green" by distributing monthly VISITOR e-Newsletters in place of

mailing paper copies. THIS IS THE LAST PAPER COPY TO BE MAILED. The September issue will be emailed to

recipients and paper copies will be available in the Narthex and Parish Life Center. Besides saving cost and

waste, the digital editions give us the ability to add color and other digital content. To sign-up, or to add

additional family email addresses, simply choose one of these options.

A. Email us at [email protected]@[email protected]@gmail.com. Please title the email “e-VISITOR”.

B. Call the church office with your email information: (864)-583-8167

C. Visit our website, www.stjohns-spartanburg.org. Scroll to the bottom right corner of the page and select “Create an

account”. Provide the information on the form, and click “Register”.

In addition to receiving the digital VISITOR, all members who register from the website gain access to the password protected

MEMBERS section of the website, including our pictorial and member’s directories, and other interesting content to come!

After August, the latest printed VISITOR edition can be picked up in the Narthex or in the PLC. Homebound members will

continue to receive paper copies through our ministry visits. We're excited about the communication possibilities this door

opens for SJLC!

SUMMER MUSIC The

Chancel Choir will be on recess

during the summer. Without

their addition to the service, we

need special music for the

summer! There are opportunities for vocalists and

instrumentalists for Preludes and Offertory. There is a

sign-up sheet on the Music Notes bulletin board in the

Fellowship Hallway. Please choose a Sunday, sign your

name, and share your musical gifts with the

congregation! Many of our regular choir members take

well deserved advantage of this hiatus to enjoy the

service with their families. Please consider sitting in

the choir loft this summer. There are no processions,

no choir anthems, and we can find a robe for you! Bring

the whole family to the loft for a different church

experience! if you have questions, please contact

Frankie Deal at [email protected] or 864-978-

ENDOWMENT FUND The St. John’s Endowment Fund was established to enhance the mission, outreach, and ministry of our congregation by providing funding for worthwhile ministries that are outside the scope of the regular church budget. Just as the Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), the contributions to the Endowment Fund provide a living and active resource for continuing and new ministry initiatives. Requests for funding will be received both to support the ministry activities of St. John’s, and for ministries outside our walls that share in our love, faith and hope in the Gospel. Please note that it is not necessary that an outreach program or ministry be associated with St. John’s to be considered for funding. The Endowment Board invites you to submit requests for funding by filling out the form, which is available in the church office, at www.stjohns-spartanburg.org/, or from members of the Endowment Committee listed below. Bring, e-mail or mail your completed forms with any support information or material to the church office no later than August 31, 2016. If you have any thoughts or questions please contact a member of the 2016 St. John’s Lutheran Church Endowment Committee.

BOARD OF VOTER REGISTRATION AND ELECTIONS OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY

SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA 29304-1287

TELEPHONE (864)596-2549 FAX (864)596-2958

June 24, 2016

Dear Pastor Mike:

Please accept our appreciation for the use of St. John's facilities as a voting location for the citizens of Spartanburg County. You provide a great service to not only those St. John's members, but also to others.

From this office's view, your facilities are among the best in our County - the covered portico; street lights; spaciousness of the gym; ample parking; and kitchen/restrooms all contribute to our being able to efficiently process our voters. I have visited St. John's on multiple election days and observed friends chatting amiably with each other as they prepare to cast their ballots.

This has been an unusually busy election year! Fortunately, the only one left is the November 8 General Election. We recognize the interruptions elections may cause to your Church's activity schedule. You and your staff have always accommodated us most hospitably.

Again we appreciate the service St. John's provides to our county.

Sincerely, Henry M. Laye, III Director

I’ve been serving as SJLC Worship and Music Council Representative for seven months. In that time I’ve gone from knowing very little about this amazing ministry to knowing just enough to know there’s still a lot to learn. Worship and Music members have been so helpful to me and are extremely dedicated to their ministries. I’ve been impressed with the commitment of our members who consistently bring together a successful Worship and Music experience every week.

We at St. John’s are blessed to have so many willing members who lend their talents on a regular basis. Under the Worship and Music ministry umbrella, there are over 150 people contributing and assisting. For some, this is a weekly commitment. At times there is an immediate need, and folks graciously step up at the last minute to help. It is truly humbling to see all of these activities come together: Altar Guild, CAST (Crucifer and Acolyte Service Team), Chancel Choir, Drama, Flower Guild, Handbells, Praise Band, Puppets, Special Music, Ushers, and others I’m sure I’ve left off this list. No matter how you serve or in what way, you are making a difference in the Worship and Music experience at St. John’s.

This month there are two training opportunities including CAST training on August 14 and the Chancel Choir clinic on August 20. Please contact me if you feel called to other Worship and Music ministries because there’s always room for you at St. John’s.

Janine Wagner, SJLC Council Representative for Worship and Music Ministry

Choir Clinic Chancel Choir Director Martin Aigner will host a choir clinic in the

Parish Life Center on Saturday, August 20th, from 10am-3pm. Bring your lunch and spend a glorious time of music and fellowship before the fall choir season begins.

Anyone with musical interest is welcome!

CAST CALL AND CAST PARTY The Crucifer and Acolyte Service Team will have their annual training meeting after the traditional service on Sunday, August 14. If you are a member, please plan to stay for lunch and training until 2:00pm. If you are a rising 5th Grader, thru 12th, and you want to become involved, please plan to join us on that day. It would be much appreciated if you would call Mrs. Dana Homan to let her know that you plan to attend, as we are ordering

pizza. 864-978-2422 call or text please.

ELCA Churchwide Assembly

The ELCA Churchwide Assembly, the primary decision-making body of the church, is a process of communal spiritual discernment. Finding ourselves in Christ, the fourteenth Churchwide Assembly will be a time for us to be the living body of Christ guided by the Spirit and conformed to God’s will. We will meet at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, August 8-13, 2016 to discuss and make decisions about how to go about God’s work as a church. This year the assembly will observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation under the theme “Freed and Renewed in Christ” and the accompanying tagline “500 years of God’s Grace in Action.” The 500th anniversary of the Reformation is an opportunity to rejoice in the life-giving, liberating power of the gospel. As part of the observance, we are inviting non-voting members to attend the Grace Gathering, August 10-13, 2016. More information about this event is available at ELCA.org/gracegathering. When the ELCA Churchwide Assembly convenes, its voting members meet with confidence in God’s grace around word and water, wine and bread, to carry on their work on behalf the entire church. Over the course of the assembly, voting members:

• Hear reports and review the work of churchwide officers, leaders and units; • Receive and consider proposals from synod assemblies; • Elect officers, board members and other leaders as specified by the constitution or bylaws; • Establish ELCA churchwide policy; • Worship together; • Adopt a budget; and • Conduct other business related to the ELCA churchwide organization.

Let me also highlight one of the important responsibilities of the assembly – the election of the Vice President as well as persons to the Church Council and to churchwide boards and committees. Voting members received information regarding nomination and election processes earlier this year. Please think about gifted people willing to serve this church. As we prepare ourselves for the 2016 Churchwide Assembly, let’s remember that it is a process of communal spiritual discernment to bring about God’s will for God’s people. Together, we will worship, pray, engage in Bible study, deliberate and conduct business in plenary sessions. When members of the assembly participate in and make decisions about the mission and ministry of the ELCA: We are church. We are Lutheran. We are church together. We are church for the sake of the world. God’s blessings,

Elizabeth A. Eaton Presiding Bishop
