Research reveals that almost all men may experience prostate problems at some point in their lives.

The most common prostate problem, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a noncancerous (benign) enlargement of the prostate gland. The word “hyperplasia” refers to the growth of tissue that occurs because of an increase in the number of cells in the prostate. In men who have BPH, the prostate gland, which is normally about the size of a walnut, can grow to as much as 50 to 100 grams.

BPH affects more than 50 percent of men older than 50, by age 60, more than one-half of men have BPH. By age 85, the number climbs to 90 percent, according to Dr. Geo Espinosa, N.D.,L.Ac, CNS, RH (AHG).

Espinosa is the director of the Integrative Urology Center at New York University Langone Medical Center

Labs.

His research is reported in the publication Natural Prostate Health: A Guide to Traditional and Natural

Treatment for Enlarged Prostate.

BPH causes symptoms in only about one-half of men who have an enlarged prostate. Initially, men may notice problems starting urination, and when other symptoms occur, they typically involve problems with the urinary tract and bladder, such as:

during the night• Weak urine stream• Dribbling after urination• Incontinence
