Hopefully you have had a chance to see some of the photos posted online from the members of the Pines that recently traveled to New Orleans for the National Youth Gathering. Attending these gatherings is an awe-inspiring experience for all, and I’m grateful for and to the members of our family who were able to attend. In the photos you’ll see our Pines members engaged in all kinds of activities and settings, but I believe the most powerful images are those of the events in the Superdome that brought together around twenty thousand youth. In these events, the participants sang together, learned together, and, more importantly, caught a glimpse of the church as something larger than the handful of people they see every week. I have many fond memories from the previous two gatherings I attended, but it is these moments when all lift up their voices together that most stand out in my mind. To see this enormous crowd and hear their voices proclaim and confess the same Lord I know and trust… Would that all Christians could share in this experience at least once. The value in this experience is not only the affirmation of seeing my faith echoed in the lives of others; I’ve grown from each of these experiences by learning again and again that I am an echo and reflection of their faith as well. I learned in these moments that the Church was bigger than me. I learned that it was bigger than my congregation and my town. I learned that the Church was bigger than the organization of my sanctuary, bigger than the hymns we’re most familiar with, bigger than our worries, fears, and doubts. I learned that the Spirit to whom I pray has done the same work that was done in me in places I’d never visit, in people whose names I will never learn. Scripture tells me that this has always been the way of the Spirit. These experiences remind me that this multiplication remains the Spirit’s way and means, and that I have a place in that work. Why is this reminder important? What does it accomplish apart from our regular gathering? Our nation is experiencing a stage in its life that is characterized by anger and vitriol, by blame and accusation, by fear and isolationism. Yard signs and bumper stickers pit neighbor against neighbor, and the anonymity of the technology world has only served to widen the gulf between us. We are divided by our fear and anger. Never before in my lifetime has the call to be multiplied by the Spirit been more challenging and necessary. Where the Spirit accomplishes the work of life-bringing faith, we are bound to all who have received this gift. What those mass gatherings demonstrate is that our bonds exist beyond the borders of our sight. If we can trust and celebrate this fact, that no lines on any map border the “nation” and “family” of God’s children, then the gulf between us stops growing and begins to ebb. Seeing one brother or sister from another place reminds us that they are there, that they confess the same guilt, and celebrate the same Savior. To be the Church is to be part of this family that exceeds all boundaries of place, language, race, and custom. To be the church is to be caught up in the Spirit of grace that excels in power over all man’s petty divisions. You may not have the opportunity to attend an LCMS National Youth Gathering, but surely you will find yourself at some time in some place with others you don’t know, perhaps some you may not like. Remember who you are. Remember what you confess. Listen for the voices that lift with your own to celebrate grace, and cling to the love that binds us all. Hopefully you have had a chance to see some of the photos

posted online from the members of the Pines that recently

traveled to New Orleans for the National Youth Gathering.

Attending these gatherings is an awe-inspiring experience

for all, and I’m grateful for and to the members of our

family who were able to attend. In the photos you’ll see

our Pines members engaged in all kinds of activities and

settings, but I believe the most powerful images are those

of the events in the Superdome that brought together

around twenty thousand youth. In these events, the

participants sang together, learned together, and, more

importantly, caught a glimpse of the church as something

larger than the handful of people they see every week.

I have many fond memories from the previous two

gatherings I attended, but it is these moments when all lift

up their voices together that most stand out in my mind.

To see this enormous crowd and hear their voices proclaim

and confess the same Lord I know and trust… Would that

all Christians could share in this experience at least once.

The value in this experience is not only the affirmation of

seeing my faith echoed in the lives of others; I’ve grown

from each of these experiences by learning again and again

that I am an echo and reflection of their faith as well. I

learned in these moments that the Church was bigger than

me. I learned that it was bigger than my congregation and

my town. I learned that the Church was bigger than the

organization of my sanctuary, bigger than the hymns we’re

most familiar with, bigger than our worries, fears, and

doubts. I learned that the Spirit to whom I pray has done

the same work that was done in me in places I’d never

visit, in people whose names I will never learn. Scripture

tells me that this has always been the way of the Spirit.

These experiences remind me that this multiplication

remains the Spirit’s way and means, and that I have a

place in that work.

Why is this reminder important? What does it accomplish

apart from our regular gathering? Our nation is

experiencing a stage in its life that is characterized by

anger and vitriol, by blame and accusation, by fear and

isolationism. Yard signs and bumper stickers pit neighbor

against neighbor, and the anonymity of the technology

world has only served to widen the gulf between us. We are

divided by our fear and anger. Never before in my lifetime

has the call to be multiplied by the Spirit been more

challenging and necessary. Where the Spirit accomplishes

the work of life-bringing faith, we are bound to all who

have received this gift. What those mass gatherings

demonstrate is that our bonds exist beyond the borders of

our sight. If we can trust and celebrate this fact, that no

lines on any map border the “nation” and “family” of

God’s children, then the gulf between us stops growing and

begins to ebb. Seeing one brother or sister from another

place reminds us that they are there, that they confess the

same guilt, and celebrate the same Savior.

To be the Church is to be part of this family that exceeds

all boundaries of place, language, race, and custom. To be

the church is to be caught up in the Spirit of grace that

excels in power over all man’s petty divisions. You may

not have the opportunity to attend an LCMS National

Youth Gathering, but surely you will find yourself at some

time in some place with others you don’t know, perhaps

some you may not like. Remember who you are.

Remember what you confess. Listen for the voices that lift

with your own to celebrate grace, and cling to the love that

binds us all.

August 2016, Vol. 16, Issue 8

Greetings from the Outreach Ministry, As I sit at my desk typing this letter I can’t help but smile as I reflect back to The National Youth Gathering. There

are no words that could possibly explain how lucky I am to have attended such a joyful event. It is very humbling to

take part of over 25,000 people worshiping The Lord, most of which are between the ages of 13 and 23. This year’s

theme was In Christ Alone. During the night we would all gather at the Superdome for what is called The Mass

Event where everyone was taught the same message. We were taught that JOY comes from Christ Alone, our

IDENTITY is in Christ Alone, Christ Alone is the true embodiment of HUMILITY, and even though The Church is

a beautiful, diverse, messy COMMUNITY, it is a place to receive and to practice grace with one another. In

CHRIST we are never alone. During the day time hours we went to several different sessions and we each took

away many different things. I hope you enjoy our pictures and our “What impacted you the most” blurbs!

Counting It All Joy,

Hope Roche Outreach Ministry Coordinator

What impacted me the most was…

“In Christ Alone I can do anything, to be humble

through and to the Lord. To put others before myself

and my doings, whether it’s sports, school, etc.”

“In my problems I’m not alone. Someone somewhere

has the same thing as me. There may not always be

someone with me but there is always someone like me

out there who deals with it. I’m never truly alone. “

“Gave me a better understanding on how I can involve

Jesus in my life. Jesus has always been in our

relationships, but we praised him together and that

meant the world to us.”

“Life is very hard at times but God is always there!”

“People are different than they seem. We learned that

most love God but are too scared to say “I love God.” We

also learned that God works to put our lives together in

thousands of different ways.”

“Always be the light that’s shining in the darkness, no

matter what!”

Devotion for Children: Back to School

Bible Verse: Matthew 16:15-16 (NIV) Then he asked them, "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter

answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

Message: It's back to school time again! Some of you are probably feeling excited. Some of you may

be a little sad that summer is over. You may feel nervous or a little scared about going back to school because of all the new things that you will have to face. You will have new teachers, some new

friends, and some of you may even be going to a new school. In our Bible lesson today, the disciples are going "back to school." Can you guess who their teacher is? Right! Jesus is their teacher. Jesus often took his disciples aside to teach them important

lessons about the Kingdom of God. This was one of those days. Jesus began his lesson that day by asking his disciples a question. "Who do men say that I am?" Jesus asked.

I imagine that one of the disciples raised his hand and said, "I know! I know! Some people say that you are John the Baptist." Then another of the disciples raised his hand and said, "I know! I know! Some people say you are Elijah." A third disciple raised his hand and said, "Some people say that

you are Jeremiah or one of the other prophets." "Very good," Jesus said, "that is what other people are saying, but who do you say that I am?"

You know, I think that Peter was so excited that he forgot to raise his hand. I think he just called out to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus said, "You are right, Peter. You didn't learn that from listening to other people. It was

taught to you by my Father in heaven." The lesson that the disciples learned that day is just as important today as it was then. Many people in our world today still do not know who Jesus is. You and I can be ready with the answer,

"He is the Christ, the Son of the living God." Pray: Dear Father, when people are searching for the answer to the question, "Who is Jesus?" help

us to be ready with the answer. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. http://www.sermons4kids.com/back_to_school_2.htm

Noise Offering

Last month’s noise offering was for CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) for Children.

CASA is a national network of volunteers who advocate on behalf of abused and neglected

children in the community. Volunteers provide stability to these children’s lives by staying with

the child until a permanent home is found. More information about Hancock County’s CASA

can be found at their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CASAhancockcounty. Lutheran

Church of the Pines raised $234.82 for this mission through its Noise Offering last month.

August’s noise offering will go to the King’s Kitchen. The King’s Kitchen is an outreach

ministry of Central Baptist Church launched in November of 2012 to feed the homeless and indigent in the

community. They serve a nutritious meal Monday – Friday, 11:30AM – 1:00PM, in a facility located behind their

church at 1203 Hwy 90, Bay St. Louis (across the highway from the post office). The King’s Kitchen is always

looking for volunteers and food donors. If you are interested, please contact the Central Baptist Church at 228-467-0529.

Dear my sweet family at the Pines, We left in such a whirlwind last month that we missed saying good-bye to most of you. The move is good news – I received and accepted a job offer for a position I really wanted, and the girls are excited about their new schools. However, all of you have been with us through some major milestones during our time at the Pines: our little family was formed, both of my girls were baptized, and Aubrey was confirmed. It’s hard to leave the congregation who shared in all of that with us. We just wanted to take a moment to say thank you and we miss you dearly. We love you and we hope to see you again before too long! May God continue to bless you all! Thank you, Laurie and the girls

Christianity in the News!

Hallelujah!!! 200,000 Tibetans, Including 62 Buddhist monks, Decide To Follow Jesus

By naycrumors - June 27, 2016

Something wonderful is happening in Tibet, a region in China considered as the highest in the world and the

home of Mount Everest, earth’s highest mountain rising more than 29,009 feet above sea level. Tibetans are

mostly Buddhist, but there are also some Muslims and Christians, according to sources.

Last year, one Tibetan Buddhist priest embraced Jesus Christ and became a Christian pastor after seeing the

love of Christ shown by a group of Christian workers who helped out and provided relief goods to the people of

the region when a major earthquake struck the area, according to Joe Handley, president of Asian Access, a

Christian organisation seeking to spread God’s Word in South Asia.

Now, the seed of Christian love has grown. In an update, Handley reports that 62 other Buddhist monks have

decided to follow the footsteps of the former Buddhist lama and are now following Jesus as well.

And that’s not all. “Just within the last year alone, [church leaders] are estimating that more than 200,000

people have come to Christ as a result of the labours of the Christian community there,” Handley says.

What is causing this avalanche of Christian conversions?

Handley says this is all due to the work of Christian workers who provided hope and healing to the people of

Tibet in the aftermath of last year’s devastating quake. “They haven’t seen Buddhists, Hindus, or other religious

groups helping in the midst of the rubble. Rather, week after week, it is the followers of Jesus who have proved

the test of time, sacrificed their own lives to serve and been the hands and feet of Jesus,” he says.

Asian Access is playing a key role in this spiritual movement by training church leaders with the aim of

establishing long-term spiritual growth in the region. “Asian Access just has the privilege of coming alongside

key pastors like the ones that have invested in this Tibetan priest’s life,” Handley says. “We invest deeply,

building their capacity so they can reach their communities.”

“God does amazing things when you invest in people and see them grow deeper in Him, grow stronger as

leaders, learn how to reproduce other leaders, and then it spreads through church planting efforts in ways that

are simply remarkable,” he adds.

Asian Access is now seeking the prayer and financial support of Christians worldwide so that the organisation

could nurture the spiritual movement in South Asia.
