Notes From the CantorCantor Jen Rolnick

Do you remember the first time you tasted raisin challah, or your first taste of matzah ? Do you remember the first time you opened the door to your new home? There is a certain joy and gratitude we feel when we encounter a new experience or

revisit it after the passage of time. Traditionally, we mark these moments by reciting the Shehecheyanu, a prayer expressing our gratitude for being able to reach this special occasion. As I sit to write this article, I am struck by the many new moments in my life for which I am thankful. This summer, I look forward to making Owings Mills my new home and to joining the Beth Israel community, my new spiritual home. As I read Cantor Eisenberg’s notes in the July Newsletter, I am touched by the beautiful moments he has shared with you over the years. I look forward to this new journey and am reminded of what a privilege and honor it is to build our community together. I look forward to another new journey this summer before officially joining the Beth Israel community in August. This summer, I also plan to attend the 28th Annual North American Jewish Choral Festival. The festival is a four day celebration of Jewish choral music. Each year, hundreds of children, teens and adults gather together to build community through song. The festival welcomes all through the motto, “if you love Jewish music, you’ve got to be there!” This year, the festival celebrates synagogue choirs by welcoming synagogue community choirs to perform in concerts each evening and offering workshops specifically geared towards synagogue choirs. These

workshops include “Bringing the Jewish World to Your Bimah”, “Beyond Dreidl” and “Shalshelet: New Music for Today”, an exploration of compositions premiered by the Shalshelet Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music. While packing boxes to send to my new home in Owings Mills, I came across my maroon and white sweatshirt from my synagogue youth chorale. I thought of all the lunches, bus rides and rehearsals that sweatshirt attended with me. I thought of all the songs we learned, friends we made, and moments we shared through our synagogue choir. There I sat, faced with the agonizing choice we have all made at one time. Do I keep this sweatshirt that holds so many dear memories, or is it time to share it with someone else? It was a difficult decision to make, but now, I feel even more inspired to teach our children to love and sing Jewish music.

Getting ready for the High Holidays? Rev up your wardrobe with a new Tallit and Kippah.

Add a new Tzedakah Box, serveware for your holiday dinner, or a beautiful Shofar to your home.

As Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur approach, it’s a good time to reflect on what Sisterhood does. The first time I went to a Sisterhood program, I wondered if Sisterhood did anything except have monthly meetings. Likewise, our officers are sometimes asked,

“What does Sisterhood do?” Here are a few examples. We make sure there is a kiddush after Shabbat services. When there is no sponsor or if the sponsorship does not completely cover the cost, Sisterhood sponsors it.We donate money to Beth Israel for projects or events both great and small. For example,• $7,500 is an annual gift to Beth Israel• $5,000 was given toward installation of the hearing

loop at Beth Israel two years ago• $200 is often given as a Purim donation to buy gift

cards for needy families• $100 each year goes to the Hackerman-Patz House,

a place at Sinai Hospital for patients and their families to stay

• $100 honorarium is usually given to a program speaker’s choice of charity

• We provide supplies for Beth Israel’s participation in Mitzvah Day

• We donate time or money when requested by our Rabbi. If a family needs volunteers to help with a specific problem, we are there. If they need money for an immediate need, we give it.

• Donations are sent to Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (WLCJ) when requested to help those impacted by disasters, such as floods or storms

And how do we do all of this? Dues paid in the Fall, of course, and donor contributions finished in the spring. But there are other ways, too.All the money raised with our Birthday Grams and Dollars for Donor programs goes to support our work. The 200 Club and the Mitzvah Card sales also raise money for Sisterhood. Members give generously to the WLCJ’s Torah Fund, which helps support students at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, NY, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, and other schools in Jerusalem, Buenos Aires, and Potsdam. The Judaica Shop is a part of Sisterhood. Anita Meddin and other Sisterhood volunteers donate hours to

ensure that beautiful gifts reflecting Jewish traditions and culture are available.Members ensure that we know about both happy and sad events in others’ lives. We help where we can.I wish you Shana Tova u’Metukah. Have an easy fast. In the new year, Sisterhood will continue its tradition of service to Beth Israel, its congregation, and the larger Jewish community.

There is only one word that describes how it feels to be proud of someone in your family: in Hebrew – nachat; in Yiddish – nachas. We shep nachas at moments like B'nai Mitzvah, weddings and graduations. Leo Rosten, in his books The Joys of Yiddish and The Joys of Yinglish defines nachas as “the proud pleasure, the special joy – particularly from the achievements of a child or loved one.” There is no English word quite like it. The next best word is also from Yiddish – to kvell. Beth Israel Congregation joins with its members in kvelling over the nachas that the following graduates have brought to their families, and the kavod they have brought on themselves:

Not long ago, to find a job, you waited for the Sunday newspaper and opened it to the Employment section. You circled the jobs under a category you thought might be a fit, then typed up and mailed your resumé and cover letter. The resumé you mailed included an “Objective.” The chronological jobs you listed summarized your tasks. You ended with “References provided on request.” Then you sat back and waited until you got a call for an interview (or received a rejection letter). Those days are over. The job-search process has changed significantly in the last decade, which means today’s jobseeker needs a resumé that keeps up. A 2017 resumé should include a no-frills format that can be read electronically by an Applicant Tracking System. It should include a narrative with measureable results quantifying your accomplishments and should match or complement your LinkedIn profile. Forget the “Objective,” but

Why Must Your Resumé Change? Because the Job Search Has Changed!

instead use a branding statement that demonstrates how you will add value to your prospective employer. Don’t offer references; if a prospective employer wants references, they’ll ask for them. The new elements of resumé style and format are not just passing fads. They truly reflect the changes in technology, hiring processes, and even corporate priorities that demand new skills from the workforce. If re-creating your resumé – or for that matter, searching for a job or making a career change – seems daunting in this very new world, the Career Coaches at JCS’ Career Center are on top of the changes and trends. They stand ready to share their expertise with you, and guide you through a successful search. BrotherhoodAJ Stolusky, President

The Brotherhood attended the Orioles game on June 21st with 30 guests supporting our hometown Birds. Once the weather cleared it was a beautiful night for baseball. While the final outcome of the game wasn’t what we wanted, it

was still an enjoyable night at Camden Yards. Our initial planning meeting took place in June and we are reaching out to speakers for the upcoming year. Our first event will take place on Sunday, September 10th. We will be in White Marsh for a BBQ, beverage, and biblical discussion hosted by Joe and Rebecca Roberts. Thank you in advance to them. Our host is making the Kosher BBQ. Keep your eyes open for the program announcement. On Sunday morning October 1st, we will be setting up the Sukkah. Please consider helping with the set up. The more volunteers the faster it gets done. Our first breakfast will be in the middle of October, and the speaker will be Howard Libit,

Executive Director for the Baltimore Jewish Council. At the end of August / beginning of September, you will receive a letter asking you to renew or join the Brotherhood. We appreciate your past support and look forward to your ongoing support in the year ahead. For those who are not current members, we encourage you to join us this coming year.I look forward to seeing you at a future Brotherhood event.

Walk-Ins Welcome!

Tuesday, August 22 2 – 7:30pm

The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Give blood.

You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do. Be someone's hero!
