We have also planted a small herb garden featuring basil, parsley, cilantro and dill. This month our Farm to Table cooking group enjoyed Earth Bowl Salads with Smokey Candied Walnuts and Basil Vinaigrette, made with arugula, lettuce, basil and broccoli harvested from the garden. It was soooo good! Employee of the Quarter Congratulations to Sheeana Calliste for being named Employee of the Quarter. Sheeana has shown time and time again that she can be counted on for just about anything the Activity Department needs. From picking up extra hours in her coworkers’ absences, to engaging volunteers, or even simply helping residents carry packages to their rooms, no job task is too big or too small for Sheeana to take on. She is the definition of reliability and dependability as she has a perfect record of attendance. Sheeana genuinely listens to the residents’ suggestions and does her best to honor their requests in her programs. For example, after several residents expressed interest in more frequent manicures and having the desire to get “all dolled up,” Sheeana introduced her bi- weekly Pamper Yourself group to give them a salon-like experience. Many of her programs break out of the typical mold of activities for seniors, bringing new experiences to our residents – such as Karaoke featuring classic rock songs. It is her attention to these small but significant details that help keep the Activity Department running smoothly and allow the residents to enjoy life at Springhouse to the fullest. Gershwin Concert, August 12 at 2:00 p.m. OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY Saturday, August 12th | 2:00 PM Will McMillan with Joe Reid on piano George and Ira Gershwin were brothers whose playful, witty songs — brimming with rhythm and harmony —epitomized the jazz age. Born to Russian parents who emigrated to New York City to escape persecution under Czar Alexander III, Ira and George initially pursued parallel paths as lyricist and composer, officially teaming up in 1924 to co-create the musical comedy Lady Be Good. This was followed by a string of hit Broadway shows — with stars such as Ethel Merman, Fred and Adele Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Gertrude Lawrence — including Oh Kay!, Funny Face, Strike Up The Band, Girl Crazy and Of Thee I Sing, which was the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The Gershwins also spent time in Hollywood, writing songs for movies such as Delicious, A Damsel In Distress, and The Goldwyn Follies — and collaborated with novelist DuBose Heyward on a ground-breaking opera, Porgy and Bess. Along with stories about the brothers’ collaborative process, Will and Joe bring Gershwin standards to life including “S Wonderful,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” “They All Laughed,” “Love Is Sweeping The Country,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “He Loves and She Loves” “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone To Watch Over Me,” “A Foggy Day,” and “Summertime.” Pianist Matt Marcus Returns for Jazz Concert: August 17 at 3:30 pm We are thrilled to welcome back pianist, Matt Marcus! Some may remember him from when he began volunteering at Springhouse about 10 years ago. At the age of 11, he came to play the piano for our residents to fulfill his community service project for his Bar Mitzvah. Now, he has grown up, and is going into his senior year at Bates College where he is minoring in Music and thankfully is still playing the piano! Jazz has always been Matt's specialty and this performance will feature standards along with some of his favorite pieces. Please join us on August 17th to welcome Matt back!
