Presidents Message:

What a great day of music we again experienced with all of our wonderful musicians. It was good to see new folks come to the meeting. It seems that “Meet Up” is a good way to bring in the younger people. We have Dennis Judd maintaining our presence on this site. Thank you Dennis.

Thanks to Bill Tapogna for leading the Jam Band. For all of you that wish to play with oth-ers please keep up your participation in the Jam Bands when they occur. Special thanks to Pam Kawashima for bringing in a new group that we have not heard be-fore; of course the Monterey Internationals were stellar as always.

Next month we have a new and special group called II Duetto Musica. You will hear some of the most beautiful singing with the accordion you have ever heard. Vic & Barbara will lead the Jam Band with their music books. Be sure to come to play with the band. Richard Noel will dazzle us with his mastery of the Roland Accordion. - Ken

Our early “Welcome Table Crew”,Art & Scott Bill and Ed Pre-jamming the Jam Sherry Xie Mei Liu Ron Harris

It was enjoyable to hear Mei Liu play Edelweiss, Anniversary Waltz, a Beethoven melody, Santa Lucia and Wave of Daniel. Then we heard Sherry Xie play Red River and Oh My Son. Also, it was good to hear Ron Harris play Amour, Misty, Come Back to Sorrento and Moonlight In Vermont, melodies we don’t hear too often.

Welcome New Member: Shirley Foster

SVAS Jam Session musicians with Jam leader Bill Tapogna. Jam dancers frolicking in the back of the room.

Ken Caple’s JAM BAND played really fun old -time songs, such as Baby Face, Blue Moon, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Dark Town Strutter’s Ball, Five Foot Two, Happy Wanderer, (we sang that), In Heaven There Is No Beer, Jambalaya, Mama Inez, Neapolitan Nights, Sailor, Schneewaltzer and Your Cheatin’ Heart. Wow!! Sue Douglas played four songs and the Julida Polka. Then it was a pleasure to hear the Paolzzi Tango Trio play their first three melodies that were composed by the accordionist, Gianfranco, and very well accompa-nied by Nancy, the Keyboardist and by Griff, the vio-linist. Those three melodies were called, “For the Cello Player”, “Obsession”, and “After the Piazolla”. Their last couple of melodies were called “For Danny” and “Tango Breeze”. There was extraordinary empha-sis on the single notes which added a lot to the rhythm. Vice President, Bill Tapogna, announced that Cotati Festival tickets were available and that the Organ Club will play at the Hoffbrau at 2pm on August 20th. Then Bill told us that he and Gloria were celebrating their 45th anniversary! Super!

Our featured players, Monterey International, were Mike Marotta, with the accordion, Dave Dally with the violin, Erasmo Aiello with rhythm instruments and a great tenor voice and Steve Hanson with the string bass. They played Spanish, Italian and even Russian music. Erasmo very expressively sang the first Spanish song and made us all want to sing it. With the second song, Dave was not only playing the violin, he was also plucking the strings to make the individual notes so fun to hear. They played a waltz called LENNY, written by Joseph Columbo. Steve’s string bass added good rhythm emphasis to

the performance, sometimes with an extra quick and strong strum and a brief hesitance. Mike asked the audience if there were any requests, and yes, there were. Frank Bakonyi asked them to play a /Russian melody, and Mike was able to play his accordion so fast that we were in awe! And Dave, Steve and Erasmo kept right up with him! Erasmo’s drums added fun emphasis to the rhythm, and the audience said to him, “Sing a song”. So, he sang a Tango in Spanish. President, Ken Caple brought them wine to drink. M,m,m,m,m,m. They played Happy Birthday to Shantell; And some more requests were for Besame Mucho, another Tango and Amapolla, sung by Erasmo. And during their last melody, Frank and Ilona Bakonyi enjoyed dancing. All four of those tremen-dously talented performers were a thrill to hear.

A special note from your SVAS Treasurer

"Thank you to the many members who have renewed their memberships, many of you with Platinum and Gold memberships, which has brought our financial status back into healthy territory. In addition,

several of our members have made generous contributions to our treasury. The increase in our an-nual dues has helped a lot, also. Your support for our club is appreciated and our attendance at the monthly meetings is growing. It is delightful to see this trend and we plan to continue bringing great

entertainment your way each month." - Bob Stanfield

A Note from Paul Pasquale, Accordions International

The LasVegas International Accordion Convention will take place in Las Vegas at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino on October 23-26 This is a gathering of World Class Accordion Entertainers for your listening pleasure and a schedule of classes and work shops to enhance your skills. The entertainment and meals are served in a large ballroom with 10 person tables. Paul has suggested that if SVAS could occupy a whole table in the ball-room we would get a seating preference close to the stage and special recognition for our Club. As our accor-dion community continues to shrink it is not known how long this event will exist. If you ever thought to go to this convention, sooner would be better than later. If anyone is reluctant to travel alone, Sharon and I will be going and anyone is welcome to join us. - Ken Caple

SVAS Jam Band Sessions with Ken C

For all of you accordionists that wish to play in a Band with oth-ers I may have a suggestion here that will interest you. As you know we play early in the program, usually before individuals begin to play. The sessions start at 1:00 typically. I would like to suggest that we start earlier to get more time in on the bellows. I can also bring in my drums and we can practice with a common beat to enhance our timing. We may even like to bring in an in-structor. Let me know if there is an interest in starting @ 12:30 from time to time. Any new start time will be announced.

Silicon Valley Accordion Society meetings held first Sunday of each month at Harry's Hofbrau, 390 Saratoga Avenue, San Jose, corner of Kiely.
