Dear Members: This past month was my third July in Las Cruces and the first that there has been significant measurable rainfall. The course received nearly 9 inches of participation. Kudos to Gil and his team for the superior condition of the golf course. This past month the club was very busy and active with several club and outside events. We had great participation in the MGA Member/Member, Wine Dinner, our annual Sports Camp, our theme nights, Saturday Night Fever among others. As most of you are aware, August is the month of our annual intra seed process. Gil and his team have been preparing our equipment, irrigation system and scheduling of personnel for this daunting task over the last several weeks. With cooperation from Mother Nature, we are all hopeful for a smooth process and great germination of the rye and bluegrass seed. Upon reopening the course, we may need to require cart path only for a short period of time to ensure the promoting of the seedlings. We will begin seeding the driving range on Monday, August 7th. The range will be closed to all activity from August 7 – August 14 and reopen on August 15. The Course will be closed to play from August 14 – August 28 During the month of August we are also launching a new lunch, dinner and Pub Menu. We anticipate these starting on August 15. Our Wine Dinner is August 17 featuring Joel Gott wines. As these have become very popular, we have begun the process of confirming your reservations. In order to ensure the dinners are available to all that are interested, we are implementing a cancellation policy of 72 hours prior to the event. This will allow us to contact those Members on the waiting list. Please contact me directly with any questions, thoughts or concerns. On August 25, we have hired DJ Mark Eagan to play music in the Pub beginning at 8pm. I look forward to seeing you at the club soon, Regards, Garry

Concerning the Advisory Board Dear Members

The last week or so the rains have come and what an affect it has had on our golf course. The fairways are lush, and the greens are smooth and quick. The two week closing will give Gill and crew ample time to finally eradicate the few remaining patches of Bermuda grass. This has been a 5-6 years process and we are there. Thanks Gil!

All members will be receiving an e-mail that will outline the group of six members’ position on the purchase of our club. Your response to the email will determine the direction that the group pursues going forward. The undertaking to get to the point of a purchase is somewhat overwhelming as it requires dealing with SEC regulations, actual solicitations to membership, as well as, homeowners in Picacho Hills. To finalize all this it has been estimated to take 6-12 months. Although, certain decisions have to be made for us to even continue forward. Without existing member support this endeavor is likely to take much longer to complete and/or possibly fail. Time will tell!

We have completed the rock restoration along the front wall and main stairway entrance. Thank You again Sisbarro’s, Kute’s and Borsodi’s. Additionally, we expect the front of our building to have cracks repaired, new stucco in some needed areas and totally repainted. Completion will be in mid-August and what a beautiful entrance it will be again. Thanks to these members for their assistance Woolf’s, Papen’s and Wright’s that made this project possible!

Advisory Board President

NO EXPERIENCED BALLS

This story was told to me by a guy who used to caddy as a kid. I also heard it in joke form one time. It’s about a guy who after a few holes finally steps up on a 160 yard par 3 over water. His first attempt was well struck but still came up short into the water. The caddy produced a brand new ball from his pocket and hands it to the guy who again plops it into the water. He then r e p e a t e d t h e exercise, sending another brand new ball right into a watery grave.

He asked the caddy to hand him yet another brand new ball. The caddy reached into the man’s bag, pulled out a brand new ball, but before tossing it to him he asked “Sir, why don’t you use an old ball for this shot?” The man replied “Son, I’ve never had an old one”.

TOURNAMENTS (cont) WAR ON THE HILL Guys versus Girls September 22, 23 and 24 This is the third year that features guys against the girls in a Ryder Cup style format. Greetings Members,

August will be a busy month on the golf course. The staff will start the process of aerification in roughs, fairways and tee grounds on 8/7. The course will be closed for a minimum of 2 weeks starting on 8/14 (subject to change) as we begin to verticut and drill seed fairways, tees and collars. After the seed is dropped, water will run nonstop until germination of seed is accomplished. When the course finally reopens, management staff will determine the cart usage rules. I would please ask for members and their guest(s) to keep off the course during the closed days. Many pieces of heavy equipment will be buzzing around the course and safety is a top priority. The time frame to overseed this year has been shortened so that loss of playing days is minimized. Please be patient during the process. The grounds staff will be working day and night in order to provide you the best conditions possible.

Always Greenside Up,

Gil Martinez, GCSAA (A)

June and July have slipped away and August is here again. They say that the difference between winning and losing is always a mental one; well here is the past months summary of those with the greatest concentration. First play day of the month had as winners in the first flight Pam Sherry 1st low gross and Chris Fritz 2nd low gross. In the second flight Patty Wood took 1st low gross with Kristin Schreurs taking 2nd low gross. Kaye Frye used her mental game and came in first in the 3rd flight. The second week of play had the same women on top Sherry and Fritz and Wood. I guess the thinking part is working. We had 5 women traveling to Cree Meadows for Border play and Pam Sherry remembered what to do and came in 1st low gross in her flight and Jane Kim took first net in the second flight. The Alto girls came in full force and are still comfortably ahead in first place. As for me I did most of my mind games watching my granddaughter Sloan enjoy camp at PHCC. I outwitted her most of the time, but candy and the I pad always come to the rescue. I would like to welcome our newest member of the LGA, Kristen Schreurs. She moved here from Albuquerque and seems to be holding up under the warm skies of Las Cruces. Reminder ladies that the entire course will be closed August 14th through the 28th. Our NM Senior Women’s Golf Association event at Marty Sanchez Links will be held on August 14th, a great alternative to play. And now from our Vice-President, Pam Sherry. The LGA is already looking forward to our best tournament of the year, KACTUS KAPERS! This year, October 10-13, “Chix with Stix will be getting their KIX on Route 66.” Antique cars, diner food, Route 66 signage and other memorabilia will all contribute to the theme and nostalgia of a by-gone era. Our Kactus Kapers committee and all involved have been hard at work planning for a fun event. And the player who kept her mind on the game for 18 holes and them some, the winner of Jill of the Hill with a net of 68 is Wendy French. It took a one hole playoff with Randi Roberts to seal the deal. Finally, I would like to play tribute to one of our own, Wendy Dever, who did fight mind over matter for nearly two years but lost that battle this month. We will miss her courage, friendship, and those sparkly blue eyes. Lynn Zeemont LGA President

The 2017 Member- Member Tournament was played July 22nd and 23rd. The Tournament went very well. We did not have as many teams as we would have liked. I really do not understand why members do not gather up a friend and play. The tournament was a wonderful event regardless. The format was an alternate shot, which really shows how much we play from the same spots in a normal round. We took shots from places where we had never been before. It was a great time. Garry and Jim did a great job as always. I thought the food was first class.

The course is in as good a shape as I have seen it in the last 20 years. Please be thinking about a partner for the Autumn Classic Member Guest. The course will be in wonderful shape. Again remember to repair ball marks. The greens are growing good now and a little tender loving care will work wonders, this will help us keep the greens in top notch shape.

August Newsletter

Things have been quite active in the Membership department. I have had great opportunities to share the benefits of becoming a member of Picacho Hills Country Club with several people that work and live in Las Cruces and surrounding areas. Many of these individuals are scheduling appointments to tour the club and see firsthand the tremendous value, many amenities and of course, the BEST Golf Course in the area. Once they see all that we offer, one of the comments I hear is “they don’t understand why they didn’t become members sooner”. The long days, sometimes difficult cold-calls, repeated visits, and taking time to listen to and talk with people in our beautiful city is definitely bringing in new members.

There has been wonderful participation during our weekly Pub Nights as well as many of our monthly events from our long time members as well as many of our recently enrolled members and I have received wonderful feedback from many members that they are really enjoying the club and many of the new members are stating that they have been welcomed in a wonderful way. So, thank you for embracing and helping them feel at home here.

I apologize to our new members enrolled in in late June that were not acknowledged in our July Newsletter: Yacone, Robert and Duncan, Kimberly – Social; Buchanan, Michael and Lori – Social.

And, of course, I am excited to share the new members for July: Madrid, Norberto and Cogdill, Alessandra – Social; MacDonald, Lloyd – Non-Resident Golf; Robinson, Rich and Dorothy – Full Family Golf; Tate, Walter and Linda – Social; Howell, Edward and Kathy – Social and Keeley, David and Randa – Social.

Please remember that your referral and new member enrollment means one month of membership dues credited to your membership. It’s a fantastic incentive. Please contact me if I can provide printed membership information for you to pass on to family, friends and co-workers or if I can answer any questions you may have concerning membership.
