“You’ve got to decide.” That is what my friend and

colleague said to me recently about how I would steward

my time during our upcoming capital campaign. For three

months, she said, I need to be laser-focused to lead and

preach, which means that there will have to be some

important things that have to be let go or shared with

others during that time. I have to decide what those

things will be, and it’s not easy!

How do you make decisions? How do you choose well

with God? That is the focus of our four-week sermons

series on discernment entitled, “Creating Space for God.”

Using Pierre Wolfe’s book, Discernment: The Art of

Choosing Well, we will explore how we can use

discernment both individually and as a congregation for

making decisions that will lead to Life.

Join us for the following Sundays and learn more!

July 29 “Choose Life” Deuteronomy 30:9-20

August 5 “The Four Criteria for Discernment” II Corinthians 1:12-22

August 12 “Discerning Together” Acts 11:1-18

At this time every year, Florence

Christian Church begins a new

thematic emphasis that leads the

congregation in its worship, faith

formation and service. Gathering at

the Table: Telling Our Stories will give

us the opportunity to share

three types of stories: God's

Story, the Church's Story, and

Our Story as we consider

God's calling in our lives and

our church.

Our theme supports Year One

of the three-year C3

Initiative. C3 (Cultivating a

Culture of Calling), a Lilly-

grant initiative, has as its aim to

cultivate an understanding that at

every point of our lives, God is

present and calling us to a deep and

abiding spirituality marked by agape

love and service. There are numerous

callings in our lives, and part of our

growth as Christians is to realize

those callings and, as we do, to

respond to them faithfully. Our

sermon series this year will lead us to

discover how God calls you and me

to this amazing journey of faith. Each

week, you will also receive a faith

formation aid. It's called "Table Talk"

and will assist you in going deeper

with your family, small group, or

personal time with God.

Gather with us at the Lord's Table

each Sunday as we share the stories

of our faith and our lives!

Ever wonder what happens other than donating funds &

shopping?

A LOT!

There’s a team working from May through September on

a project only visible to our congregation during July-Aug.

May: Our Pastors, Melissa Stephens, Donna Murphy, &

Maleah Rhodes held a planning meeting to set key dates

& choose our theme, ‘Backpack Tales.’

June: Leslie Lawson secured school supply lists from 20

elementary & middle schools while Jason Lawson

revamped our inventory control/order management

spreadsheet & Susan Mead created the beautiful narthex

display. Kim McCoy designed our Facebook page while

Clara Justice handcrafted thank you notes & Bev Anderson

added labels for the contribution envelopes in the pews.

Damian Wallace videotaped ‘Backpack Tales’

of congregation members & School Resource

Coordinators while Leslie Markesbery &

Melissa Stephens prepared the videos &

slides for Sunday mornings. Hannah &

Sharon Stanley created the large ‘Bus

Routes’ display in the narthex to show major

shopping locations while Kristen Edwards secured

addresses & other store info for our shoppers.

July: Melissa Stephens & Pastor Diana chose backpack

tags to be attached to all our backpacks. Melissa also

made hundreds of ‘packed with love’ cards to add to our

deliveries & ordered additional shelving for supplies.

Maleah Rhodes wrote communications for bulletins,

newsletters & team updates. All this happened BEFORE

shopping even started. WHEW!!!!

July also brings donations (THANK YOU!) for our super

shopper team (Donna Murphy, Tricia Moore, Cassie

Matlock & Maleah Rhodes) to buy thousands of supplies

in bulk.

August: Our project is only half-way complete, so please

consider how YOU can contribute in August. There is

much work to be done shopping daily, sorting/counting

Sundays after both services, & delivering supplies during

the week.

The latest green idea at Florence Christian Church

“Single-use plastic straws are an environmental problem that few

people think about. But consider the popularity of drinks like fountain

sodas, iced lattes and bubble teas; all the

accompanying plastic straws add up to a lot of

plastic waste.

According to “Strawless Ocean”, we use 500

million straws every day. Those straws are difficult

to recycle and add to the plastic catastrophe

happening in our oceans.“ Quote from

Earth911.com

We don’t use straws

but we did use the

plastic stirrers for our

coffee here at Florence

Christian. If you haven’t

noticed yet, we now use

bamboo stirrers that are

environmentally

friendly. (Thanks to

Josh Crabtree for the

green idea!)

For your personal use, start refusing straws at restaurants. If you can’t

give up straws, use paper, metal or glass straws. It will make a

difference!!

God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make

them reflecting our nature so they can be responsible for the fish

in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, and, yes, Earth itself, and

every animal that moves on the face of Earth.” Genesis 1:27

Backpack Blessing Sunday, August 5 during Worship

Back-to-school is an important transition. It is a new year

of learning, with new teachers, new friends, even a new

school. As recognition of this important time of the year,

we will be blessing all our students, teachers, and staff as

they begin a new year.

Bring your backpack, bag, lunch box, etc. to worship with

you to receive a special blessing for the new school year.

Students, faculty, staff, and everyone involved in

education is invited to participate! We will also bless all

our school supply backpacks that we will be donating! Backpack Blessing 2017

Mix It Up is an opportunity for newcomers to

Florence Christian Church to get to know

church leaders in a casual and fun setting.

Tammy Sierra and Jonni Lynch prepared a

beautiful meal. The deacons served the meal

and the Elders and Pastors engaged with our

guests around the dinner table. It was a great

night and several of our guests have decided

to become Ministry Partners. We welcome

Shauna and Chrissy Releford and their children,

AJ, Bretley, and Paislee.

Fall enrollment is strong, most classrooms are at capacity,

We do have a few openings in our Kindergarten

Enrichment and Adventure Zone.

Many new infants are enrolled to attend in the Fall. We

are just waiting for these little bundles of joy to join the

world and join us at our program. There is nothing more

fulfilling than building relationships with the many

families that attend our program.

Did you know the Pre-K II and Adventure Zone children

visit with senior citizens on a weekly basis?

Beginning earlier this year the Discover Zone started a

weekly chapel service for Pre-K II children and senior

citizens at neighboring Arcadia Park. Each week children

and seniors, alike, enjoy singing, crafts, and a snack.

Several of the seniors attended Pre-K graduation in May

to celebrate the children whom they have come to love.

This summer, Discover Zone expanded this practice of

inter-generational engagement with the Adventure Zone

Summer Program. Each Friday a group of children ride

the church bus to Florence Park Nursing and

Rehabilitation Care Center. Children walk the halls singing

and sit to engage in conversation with their elders. For

many children, this is their first encounter with much

older adults with health complications. But you would

never know it! The kids look forward to their weekly visits

and the elder residents...their joy and smiles speak louder

than words.

Joy and smiles!

It’s hard to believe that fall is approaching, but the purple

martins just left for South America and there are other

little indicators to let us know! One of them is:

IT’S TIME TO SCHEDULE

FLU SHOTS HERE AT

FLORENCE CHRISTIAN

CHURCH!

Look for a notice in the weekly

news in mid to late August.

Walgreens Pharmacy in Union will come on a Sunday in

September to provide this important service to help us

stay healthy during the 2018-2019 flu season!

Also, coming soon is the St. Elizabeth Heart and

Vascular Van on November 2 from 10:00 to 2:00. These

hours will be expanded as necessary to accommodate as

many people as possible. This van brings a cardiac age

risk assessment including blood glucose and lipid panel,

peripheral artery test, abdominal artery ultra sound,

carotid artery ultrasound and a free atrial fib screening

with any paid test. Each screening is $25, and while

insurance does not pay, most flexible spending accounts

and health savings accounts will cover. Remember, these

are screening tests; if you are having symptoms of heart or

vascular disease, see your health care provider right away.

Free produce distributions continue the second Tuesday

of each month in the Activity Center. Please come if you

need fresh fruits and vegetables. The only requirement is

that you sign in with your name, address, and best way to

contact you.

If there are other screenings or services i.e. education,

support groups, etc. you feel will be helpful to you and

others in our congregation, please contact Phyllis Reed at

859-620-9646.

Heroes of Faith!

Pictured above are the guests at a special lunch thanking

all our heroic Faith Formation Leaders. These heroes of

faith serve in our children's worship services on Sun-

day mornings, lead our youth or adult faith groups and

some are planning to serve as a faith formation leader

next year. During their time together, they celebrated

their commitment to forming faith every day, welcomed

new faith formation leaders, and prayed for

our faith formation program.

Volunteer Worship Leader Opportunities

We have some wonderful faith formation ministries for our

children and youth such as Children Worship & Wonder

and Following Jesus for ages 4 to 8 and Kid’s Quest Wor-

ship for ages 9 to 13. These worship experiences take place

during each Sunday morning worship and would not be

possible without the help of our many wonderful adult

worship leaders. It takes the team work of over 20 dedicat-

ed volunteers to help us provide these experiences of God

for our children.

If you have a passion for being with children and would be

willing to serve about one Sunday a month, please contact

Pastor Diana ([email protected]) to

learn about what opportunities may be available for you.

BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES!

Bible Milestone Presentations

Sunday, August 19th

As a part of our commitment to lifelong faith formation,

we present children and youth Bibles at different

milestones in their lives. Each Bible is especially designed

to fulfill the faith and developmental stage through

which they are journeying. Bibles are typically presented

when children and youth transition to different worship

experiences or at other points in their lives such as when

a young child transitions into Worship & Wonder/

Following Jesus or into Kid’s Quest. Join us for this

special celebration in the lives of our children and youth!

Family Faith Conversations!

Our children and youth ministry teams are hard at work

this summer having faith conversations with all our

families who have children! The Children and Youth

Ministry Teams need your help! This process launches

year three of our three-year visioning process with

Vibrant Faith. (https://vibrantfaith.org/coaching/

church/) started in July 2016. Through this process we

have embraced our mission, identified our core values,

made key decisions about our ministries and ministry

location and much more! Now, we are turning our

attention in this third year, to go deeper in our

commitment to live out our value of forming faith every

day. We are creating a blueprint (strategic plan) for life

long faith formation.

We especially want to be thoughtful, strategic and

effective in what we do for and with our children and

youth. We know there is A LOT that we can and could

do, but we want to focus on a few things that are most

effective and do them excellently. As a part of this

process, the Children and Youth Ministry Teams are

having conversations with as many of our families as

possible. The thoughts and ideas gathered from these

conversations will be used by the Faith Formation

Ministry teams to help us create our plan during a

retreat with Jim LaDoux on September 14-15. Please be

in prayer for the teams as they discern how we as a

church can go deeper with our commitment to lifelong

faith formation. If you have any thoughts that you would

like to share with the group, please feel free to contact

Pastor Diana.

The McLemore family participated in a special prayer

service for Nicaragua held by the 2018 Nicaragua Mission

Team.

Children Worship & Wonder,

Sundays, 9 AM Ages 4-8

10:30 AM – Ages 4-6

Children Worship & Wonder resumes on August 19. It

is a worship experience designed for younger children,

influenced by Montessori ideas, and it creates a

welcoming environment to grow in relationship with God

through ritual and storytelling. Children begin to develop

their theological imagination. Children leave the sanctuary

after the children’s blessing and are escorted to the

Children’s Worship Center in the atrium. Parents reunite

with their children after the close of worship outside the

Children’s Worship Center in the atrium.

NEW Following Jesus,

Sundays at 10:30 AM (Ages 6-8)

Due to the growth of the number of children, we are

offering Following Jesus worship experience at the 10:30

AM service. This worship experience is similar in format to

Worship & Wonder where a special and welcoming

environment is created in which children hear the sacred

stories of Jesus based on the Gospel of Mark. These stories

and following work invite children to consider what it

means to be a disciple of Christ and helps them explore

questions of discipleship. Children leave the sanctuary

during the children’s blessing and are escorted to the

Chapel. Parents reunite with their children after the close

of worship outside the Chapel.

Children in Worship

As always, children are welcome to

worship in the Sanctuary for the entirety

of worship with their families. We

welcome their wiggles and giggles, cries

and coos! They are beloved members of

the family of God.

Special worship engagement activities for

older children:

Summer Worship Work kit with

engaging activities

Children Worship Work center in the back of the

sanctuary.

If a child would like to display

artwork, please give it to Pastor Diana.

Nursery Care: Children ages 0-5 are

welcome in the nursery. If you have a

little one, nursery care is available at each

service, so please make the choice that

best fits the needs of your family.

PARENT NOTE: Please be watching

your email about your children

transitioning from one worship

experience to another. If you have any questions or feel

that now is an appropriate transition time for your

child, please speak with Pastor Diana.

of worship leadership and learning. It incorporates the same scripture as in “Big

Church” and provides children ways to interactively engage with the scripture

lesson. Children leave the sanctuary during the children’s blessing and are escorted

to the small conference room. After the conclusion of their activities, they are

escorted back into the sanctuary to rejoin their families for communion.
