From the Desk of the CEO
As reported last month due to the late receival of valuations for mining properties the shire is yet to set the final rates for the 2019-2020 year therefore the annual budget cannot be finalised and adopted. This means that rate notices for this financial year will be issued later this year. The fuel station is now repaired and working well although there have still been some instances of transactions timing out but they are quite rare and everyone should now be able to get the fuel they need when they need it and get on their way without any delays. The July Council meeting was postponed from Thursday 25
th to Friday 26
th to enable all
Councillors to attend and some of the items discussed were as follows; the Auditor General’s Office in issuing the final audit report for 2018 year, listed some of the shires financial ratios as showing significant adverse trends and a report was required to be prepared by management on what was done or is going to be done to rectify these. The report was presented to the audit committee and was endorsed by Council. The report is required to be published on the shires website and will be able to be viewed there. As a part of the rates process mining ratepayers were given the opportunity to object to the proposed differential rates and the 2 submissions received were considered by Council who resolved not to make any changes based on those submissions. A donation to the Sandstone Golf Club to help offset the cost of putting on the Sandstone Open Golf event was approved. This year’s event will be the 60
th and last unless some new members
who are willing to run the event join the club and take over. A late item requesting the partial closure of Oroya Street and the obstruction of the footpath in front of the National Hotel to cater for the Variety Bash participants who will be in Sandstone on the 28
th August was also approved with up to 300 people expected in town for lunch.
Council also considered the draft 2019-2020 budget subject to receiving Ministers approval for the rates and suggested a few minor changes which will be made. No details can be released until the budget is formally adopted by Council after the rates are confirmed. Changes to the Local Government Act 1995 changing the way access to some shire information is made available to the community were gazetted during July and there is now a lot of new information that needs to be posted on the shire’s website www.sandstone.wa.gov.au why not take a look and see what is new. OUR NEW BEALE PIANO
With the scheduling of our Piano Concert, it was decided to purchase a new—albeit second hand—piano. Unfortunately due to illness, our Piano Concert scheduled for July didn’t go ahead, however we are now the proud owners of a lovely BEALE piano, which has arrived and taken up residence in the Town Hall. Rebecca Hills, who supplied, delivered and tuned our piano, has been able to give us some history on it. Rebecca writes:-
“It was between 2007-2009 that a young teenage fellow contacted me after his local church gave him their piano. He played weekly in the parish at mass for them and every other occasion he could possibly play for them there. After some time, he decided to seek some quotes to have it reconditioned as the felts, leathers and springs were well and truly worn out. I went to meet him and his Beale, he was such a sweet young fellow and dedicated to his music that I couldn’t charge him to inspect it as the other technicians had done. It didn’t take long before he spoke to his parents, called me back to say he wanted to choose me to do the repairs, as I hadn’t charged him that day . I carried out an awful lot of work on the action and all in total, it came to around $4000, in the years following he made excellent use of the piano and became a jazz pianist now residing and working in Sydney according to his Mum & Dad the day I collected the Beale from them. It was time to downsize their home and their son had left the Beale there to enjoy on his visits home, however it had to go and in a hurry as their home sold as soon as it was placed on the market .
Since I saw the piano from the very first day, I always made a fuss about the unique tiger like patterns in its oak cabinet and for that reason, the parents were told to call me to give me the first option to purchase it. I hope you all have many years of enjoyment from your piano.”

HISTORY CORNER— An excerpt from the book
“Sandstone—from Gold to Wool and Back Again” by Sally L Senior
SPORT—pg 271 Cycling Cycling was a very popular sport, as many of the men used bicycles to travel to and from work, and between settlements. It was a sport that most of them could afford. In general, the roads in the area were not good or very suitable for bicycles, being either stony or sandy and very seldom smooth and firm. This did not deter participants in cycle races. Neither did the weather or temperature. A bike race was held from Nungarra to Hack’s via Wanderie and back again, in March 1906. The race was won by T Pierce, but there were several spills and many damaged bikes as a result of the race. Such was the enthusiasm of the cyclists that there was a training track near the Oroya Black Range Mine, where cycling and foot racing events were frequently held. Miners would train there either after work or in their meal break. During 1908-1909 two very memorable cycling events took place. One was the 61/2 hour ride by Constable Wright from Black Range to Mt Magnet, a distance of roughly 100 miles. The other, performed when temperatures were 100 degrees F in the shade, was by a woman, between Leonora and Maninga Marley. She had never been over the road before, but covered the Leonora to Lawlers section, a distance of 82 miles, in 6 1/2 hours and the Lawlers to Maninga Marley section, a distance of 76 miles in the same time. It was suggested that it was a record unlikely to be beaten. When asked ‘Why?’, she replied, ‘Needs had to be’. Looking at today’s roads, with bulldusts holes and corrugations etc. it is hard to imagine what it must have been like on outback tracks in those days of the early 1900s, when bicycle travel was common, on bicycles far less sophisticated that today’s (that is, no gears). What is often not realised is that the early tracks between settlements were more often made by the footprints of camels travelling in line, one behind the other, than by wheeled vehicles that cut up the surface. These camel ‘pads’ were, in the most part smooth, as camel’s feet are large soft and flat, and do not roughen the surface but help to smooth it out. These tracks were highly favoured by cyclists between goldfields centres early in the century, and could be found for many years after the camels had gone. Although camel pads often joined early settlements, the roads that followed the arrival of wheeled vehicles and joined the more recent finds were far from friendly to cyclists. Football Games of football were the first recorded team games at Nungarra. The first were organised in July 1904, when there were reports of football games between two teams, the Reefers and the Towns. Once the population had moved to Sandstone, teams developed there. The colours these teams wore in 1908 were: Towns– blue and white, Mines—yellow and black, Wanderers—red and black. Football practice was a regular event, generally taking place after work or after the morning shift finished, but the main practice was at weekends. Football matches attracted up to 300 spectators in 1908. Young players were not forgotten, as both Towns and Reefers had Junior football teams. Not all matches were held at the recreation grounds. A football match was held at the Oroya Mine in April 1908, between teams from that mine. The surface was said to be very good, and Underground won. They must have been reasonably matched, as a match between Surface and Underground at the Oroya Mine in June 1908 resulted in a win for Surface. This match was held again the following year on 12 May. There was great excitement when in 1910 a football team from Perth visited the town and lost to the combined Sandstone team. Much celebration followed. In May 1913, the first Premiership matches were held in Sandstone, but it is not recorded which team won. Football was still being played in Sandstone in the late 1920s and 1930s, and players were so keen that they would ride a bicycle to town from outlying towns and stations to play, then ride it home again after the match. One such player was Jack Allen, who would ride his bike the 18 miles from Black Hill to town to play, but admitted to usually getting a lift home by car after the match, as his father would take pity on him. After the Second World War, football died out in Sandstone and was never revived.
